hen you sit in her chair for a 10 minute Kickass Makeover, her energy and passion for makeup sweeps you away. Making you realise your beauty was always there; she just teased it out with the magic of her brushes. “There is an allure to teaching women to let their beauty shine. How you present to the world is your choice. “I often hear from women that they don’t have enough time to look good. I think we forget that we are in charge of our life’s schedule.” Claire knows what it takes to make changes to get what she wants. “I’ve always been interested in fashion and makeup. I’ve been immersed in this field for many years,” she said. “Just like the women who say they don’t have time to do their makeup, I found I was making excuse (quietly in my own head) why my career was not where I knew it could be.”

I love seeing women transform in front of me,” Claire said. “When you look your best you exude confidence and feel like you can conquer the world.”

Her journey to making over her business came two years ago when she left her modelling business, clients and friends in Darwin to come to Brisbane.

“I had the most amazing epiphany about my business and where I wanted to go and these were the guys to help me. That was five months ago and I have not stopped,” Claire said.

“I had lived there for 12 years. I took a small modelling agency, with no business experience and made my mark in my home town. Then I moved to Brisbane.

“It is not just about being positive, transformation is a continual process so you are always on top of your game. KPI has given me access to great people and filling my mind with the wisdom of great leaders.

“It was one of the most confronting things I had ever done. To go from being so well known in Darwin and then just another makeup artist In Brisbane,” Claire said. But tenacity is Claire’s middle name. She describes her drive as having the fire of 10 men in her belly. No longer content to just be a makeup artist, she wanted to explode her business to new heights. “I am teaching women the power of makeup and how to let their beauty shine, I needed to change direction so my message could reach more people but was not quite sure how to make that change,” she explained. The catalyst for change came one Friday morning as she sat in a Key Person of Influence (KPI) seminar run by Glen Carlson and team.

“I am working on my book right now. I always knew I had one in me but never thought I would do it. “The rebrand came next. I looked at my former business image… Makeup Princess…I’m no princess so I needed my brand to reflect that. So I had new profile pictures done. Working with Louise Williams from ‘Emotive Images’ was exhilarating – she so captured my edginess and energy.” The power of makeup goes further than skin deep. It is about recognising the power within. Not waiting for opportunities but creating them by getting out of the comfort zone. Claire Taylor is doing this, her way, all the way. NEW YOU Magazine

FROM BROKEN TO

WHOLE AGAIN BY AWARD WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER LOUISE WILLIAMS OF WWW.EMOTIVEIMAGES.COM.AU

“Merry Christmas, family! they’ve found Bone Cancer in my spine” was what I heard the week of Christmas 2011.

16 NEW YOU Magazine

The festive season upon us, and instead of Christmas carols and tinsel, we were talking about the big C word. After years of heart problems and a stroke suffered by my father, this ultimate blow changed our whole family forever. How do you come back from that? Knowing that nothing could be done medically for your father apart from ‘palliative radiation treatment’? No amount of knowledge, seeking, asking, wishing, surgery or wanting for it to be different would make it so. We could only brace ourselves for whatever would be after radiation treatments. As a former Psychologist I would have typically dealt with this by ‘getting busy’ in my work and focusing on others. As an artist, opening my heart to all photographic subjects, there was nowhere left to escape too other than my art as solitude. I sought interested muses who would pose for my creative ideas to create four photographs that truly reflected all of the emotions I was experiencing at that time, so I could make some sense of the situation. These images were submitted to several major Photographic Competitions, where I received Silver Awards in both National and State. In 2013 I was a Queensland Finalist for Illustrative Photographer of the Year with these awarded images.

FROM BROKEN TO

WHOLE AGAIN continued... A parent with cancer, no matter how old you are, often throws you immediately into a vulnerable reaction to loss (particularly loss of innocence or naivety), fear and inability to reconcile the situation in your heart. This inspired the image of the little boy with the teddy bears. The woman with the medical drip and bubbles, shaves her head every 2 years for Cancer research and works in Oncology. This photograph shared the absolute desperation for “Cancer” and everything that is medical / clinical to ‘go away’, and for everything to be ‘normal’ once again. The man being consumed with vines, was a perfect representation of the struggle and helplessness we felt when facing this Cancer diagnosis. This man also shaves every year to raise money for Cancer research.

18 NEW YOU Magazine

The non-discriminating nature of Cancer and the “survival odds” that you often hear when in the midst of such a journey, led to the final image of a woman screaming in a lineup of singular, ‘hairy’ mops (1 in 4…). This woman’s father passed away several years ago from Cancer, and she has raised a huge amount of money for Cancer research. Often there is a response of defiance and a push to fight that is felt by those diagnosed with Cancer and their family. After all other emotions fall away all you are left with is a choice to surrender, or to fight for your life. This image sums up perfectly where my family is now at in our own journey. The advancement of my father’s Cancer has been brought to a halt for now, and we are choosing to savor every moment, every day, and every Christmas we have together as a family. For this I am very grateful.

MELBOURNE MELBOURNE - A CITY KNOWN FOR ART, CULTURE, ECONOMIC PROWESS, QUALITY EDUCATION AND LOVE OF SPORTS IS ALSO HOME TO SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S RENOWNED PLASTIC AND COSMETIC SURGEONS.

N

ew You invites you to discover a number of those Melbourne surgeons specialising in procedures designed to help you achieve your goal to enhance your appearance. Aware that many men and women have the desire to make a cosmetic change, yet may need help in finding a surgeon, this special feature provides information about these specialists and what they do to make the process a little easier. Although there are no concrete statistics on how many cosmetic procedures are performed in Australia, it is evident that they have been on the rise in the past 10 years. This is perhaps due to an increased acceptance of cosmetic surgery among both men and women, and the number of qualified surgeons actively working in this field. While procedures such as breast augmentation and face lifts are commonly thought of as choice procedures, others are also popular such as ear and nose surgery, body contouring and lifts, eyelid surgery and brow lifts, chin surgery and tummy tucks.

Procedure options can vary depending on the individual and their specific requirements, which can result in a successful outcome with the choice of a well-trained, experienced and qualified Plastic and Cosmetic surgeon. Just as you are an individual, surgeons are professional individuals each with their own philosophy and approach to their work. Finding the surgeon that is right for you is not only about being confident they can perform the chosen procedure, but also about being comfortable in working together with them to achieve your goal. It is also important to know that some surgeons specialise in a number of procedures, yet others may concentrate on a select two or three. So it may help to prepare a checklist for the procedures you are considering. In the following pages, a snapshot of Melbourne Plastic and Cosmetic surgeons provides an overview of their areas of speciality and an introduction to cosmetic procedures they perform. Current contact details are listed along with the location of their Melbourne practices to make it easier to find them.

DR RODGER DAVIES Oculoplastic surgeon (MBBS FRANZCO FRACS FANZSOPS)

SPECIALISES IN COSMETIC EYE PROCEDURES SUCH AS UPPER AND LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY, ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFTS AND ASIAN EYELID SURGERY. Dr Davies graduated from the University of Melbourne and completed ophthalmic training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, as well as completing a fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery at the Mt Sinai Medical Centre, Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons. Blepharoplasty to achieve a more rested and alert look for the eye area continues to be one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, according to Dr Rodger Davies. “Aging of the eyelids and eyebrows can make one look and feel tired and old, and can also interfere with vision,” says the Melbournebased Oculoplastic surgeon. “In addition, constant lifting of the brows can cause strain and headache.” “Blepharoplasty for upper and lower eyelids has proven successful in addressing these issues.” Upper Blepharoplasty involves removal of excess eyelid skin and prolapsed orbital fat and formation or reformation of the upper eyelid fold. Interestingly, about half of Asian upper eyelids have incomplete, asymmetrical or absent eyelid folds. Some also have ptosis (droopy eyelids blocking vision) or inturned lashes rubbing on and irritating the eye. Lower Blepharoplasty addresses the aging process of the lower eyelid where skin has loosened and sags as the fat that supports and surrounds the eye prolapses forward. This produces puffiness (eye bags) and wrinkles.

MELBOURNE The procedure removes excess skin and prolapsed fat. Dr Davies performs Blepharoplasty procedures in day surgery under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation for two eyelids or general anaesthetic for more prolonged procedures. Postoperative care includes antibiotic drops and ointment for a week and applying ice compresses during the first 24 to 48 hours. Sutures are removed within 1 week; and Dr Davies says most patient return to work without feeling excessively swollen in 1 -2 weeks.

Dr Davies also specialises in the Endoscopic Brow Lift procedure, which is an operation performed through small cuts behind the hairline. This gives access to endoscopes and micro instruments under the forehead skin to mobilise and lift the brow and then fix it in the higher position using Endotine clips. Scars are hidden in the hair. This operation is also performed in day surgery under general anaesthetic and can be combined with blepharoplasty and ptosis repair.

DR DAVID YING Plastic Surgeon MBBS (Hons); FRACS (Plast.) Waverley Plastic Surgery

DR DAVID YING IS A FULLY TRAINED PLASTIC SURGEON, FELLOW OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALASIAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS AND A MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS – CREDENTIALS HE SAYS SHOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR ANYONE CONTEMPLATING ANY COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURE.

With any procedure, reconstructive or cosmetic, Dr Ying feels it is vital to first understand the patients’ motivations and expectations. “I ask the usual questions about what changes they want for their body, but I am really interested in what sort of person they are, their lifestyle, occupation, and what their take on the world is,” Dr Ying says. “Truly understanding who they are and where they wish to go in life takes intuition. Getting this part of the assessment right is one of the most important factors for a successful outcome and it is something that I strive to achieve with each patient.” Dr Ying’s initial patient assessment aims to open the door to an honest conversation about realistic expectations and helps determine any potential complications and pitfalls. “That’s an important factor often not emphasised enough prior to surgery,” he adds. Dr Ying specialises in a variety of aesthetic procedures, including breast surgery - augmentation, reduction, breast lift 24 NEW YOU Magazine

MELBOURNE and reconstruction; body contouring – abdominoplasty, body lift and male breast reduction, facial rejuvenation and eyelid surgery – often required to restore clear vision in patients with sagging skin around the eyelids. He also performs reconstructive procedures after cancer surgery, injury and trauma. Dr Ying’s practice nurses in his Chadstone rooms also assist him in the operating theatre, so all patients can rest assured that they are enjoying personalised service from the initial consultation throughout their entire surgical journey. Specialising in such a varied range of procedures has led Dr Ying to have a diverse patient list with very individual needs. But finding a unique solution for each individual is what he enjoys most about his practice. “Plastic surgery is a problem solving specialty and I enjoy the challenge that comes with each individual patient that I see,” he says.

BY MICHELLE DRYBURGH

They say you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone – and when it comes to vision, that’s certainly the case. Every year, thousands are prescribed glasses or contact lenses for deteriorating eyesight. The improvement to vision is a welcome relief, but only a temporary fix. In our fast-paced society, glasses and contacts pose an ever-greater burden for wearers with active lifestyles and busy schedules. That’s why many are turning to Vistaeyes for an effective, convenient solution. Dr Rick Wolfe is a pioneer of laser eye surgery in Australia. Having changed the lives of more than 15,000 patients during the past 20 years, he treats a wide range of vision problems at the Vistaeyes clinic. Dr Wolfe is one of Australia’s most accomplished eye surgeons and played a leading role in introducing and refining techniques in cataract and refractive surgery. An Ophthalmic Advisor to the Australian Defence Force, he is regularly invited to speak, and even perform live surgery, at world conferences. But Dr Wolfe says the most important part of his role is helping everyday patients decide on the right treatment for them. So, he’s set aside some time to answer your questions…

26 NEW YOU Magazine

What conditions can you treat?

Is it safe?

We offer a wide range of procedures and choose the best one for each individual. We can treat short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia (decline in vision with age), conditions like keratoconus and cataracts. We even have a new technique called LASIK Xtra for people who were previously told they were unsuitable for LASIK (the most common form of laser vision correction).

Yes, laser eye surgery is very safe. Over 31 million cases have been performed worldwide and the procedure—in the hands of an experienced surgeon and utilising state-ofthe-art equipment—has a very low incidence of significant complications.

Am I a good candidate? We take into account your age, any presence of eye disease, and if you are pregnant. The best way to determine whether you are suitable is through a consultation, where we can test your eyes using pain-free, sophisticated computerised vision assessment.

What does the procedure involve? Each type of treatment is different, so it depends on your unique situation. You will be seen in our relaxing spalike clinic with personal attention from the moment you walk through the door. You will also be supplied with my personal mobile number for urgent post-surgery questions.

Will it hurt? Laser eye surgery is painless for most people. You’ll be given anaesthetic drops before the procedure, and during surgery you may feel a sense of pressure. After surgery, most people experience some light sensitivity, eye irritation and watering in the eyes, however these effects are temporary.

How long does recovery take? Most LASIK patients can drive and work the very next day, after their appointment with us. If you are not suitable for LASIK, there are other procedures that will get you back to driving and working within 1 week.

What if I can’t keep my eye still? With our WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser’s multidimensional eye tracker, the eye’s position is measured accurately and continuously. When your eye moves, the treatment remains centred.

So what does this all mean for me? It could mean getting back to a favourite activity, like cycling or swimming without glasses weighing you down. Even the simple things, like checking the alarm clock in the morning, applying making or falling asleep on the couch, without the hassle of contacts. There’ll be no more foggy lenses, expensive cleaning solutions or missing out on all the fun while you hunt around for your glasses.

Don’t miss another moment, call Dr Wolfe and the Vistaeyes team today.

Super

Q&A What is your anti-ageing philosophy?

Live life to the fullest, enrich it with meaningful experiences, learning and of course, relationships and quality time with people. I try to keep active - always searching for ways to keep improving my mind and body, and intend to age with as much grace as I can muster.

How do you manage to maintain your natural glamorous look?

You are such a busy woman. What is your definition of relaxation?

Relaxation to me equals a state when your mind and body is at peace. When you are unplugged from the demands of work and life and can just be calm and unburdened. Relaxation for me comes in the form of meditating, enjoying a good meal with friends and family, travelling holidays and good spa treatments.

I was blessed with good genes from my parents (thank you mum and dad) - people also tend to think I’m younger than I really am. I like to think looks can be expressed through self confidence and self belief - having it in healthy amounts makes anyone more attractive. As for the maintenance routines, I don’t fuss too much over my looks now as I’ve found my stride in my wellness, wardrobe and beauty routines.

You are Publisher of Daily Addict. What does this role mean to you?

You are delightfully pregnant right not but how did you manage to maintain your enviable weight?

What are your most important daily rituals that help keep you healthy?

Yes, we’re expecting our first child soon and very excited. I try not to think about the weight gain - it’s a necessary part of creating life - but more about eating a nutrient rich diet and keeping a fitness regime approved by my obstetrician (a combination of pregnancy pilates, yoga, lots of walking and modified high impact interval training). My husband has also been incredibly supportive encouraging me and helping me stay active we work out together two times a week.

This means that I have the privilege of running my own business, that I have created an independent digital publishing business from the ground up, and that when I go to work I am helping others enrich their lives, one meaningful experience at a time.

Have a good breakfast (mine usually consists of a nutrient rich smoothie or superfood-charged porridge with almond milk, coconut oil, chia seeds, dates, berries and walnuts). I do three mins of squats or some exercise regularly throughout the day (such as when I’m brushing my teeth!, or hourly if I’m desk bound during the day). Talk at least once to my husband / family - checking in and staying in touch with loved ones keeps you grounded and happy. I also try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night - although that will soon change!

Plant Based Diet

Breakfast

Paleo Coconut Banana Pancakes Prep time 10 minutes, Makes 4 large pancakes Ingredients: 1 medium banana, peeled and roughly chopped 2 whole eggs 6-7 tbsp almond meal 3 tbsp desiccated coconut, unsweetened 1/2 tsp gluten free baking powder 1 tbsp vanilla essence coconut oil for cooking

Method:

Lemon butter 2 tbsp vegan butter substitute, grated or mashed if softened at room temperature ½ lemon, zest and juice Handful of blueberries & maple syrup to serve Grate butter stick into a ramekin and combine with grated lemon zest and lemon juice. Use a fork to mash the butter and incorporate lemon. Set aside. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth and fluffy. If you don’t have a blender, you can mash banana with a fork and whisk the eggs in a bowl and then combine with the

rest of ingredients. Heat up a tiny dollop coconut oil in a non-stick frying pan. Cook pancakes in batches, about one and a half tablespoon of mixture per pancake. Keep the heat on medium making sure the pancakes don’t burn too quickly, and cook thoroughly. You know it’s time to turn them over when little

Quinoa Nori Metabolism Boosting Wraps

bubbles start appearing in the batter. The batter is quite fragile so use two spatulas to turn them over. Add a little more coconut oil in between pancakes. Serve with lemon butter or maple syrup and berries on top. Recipe from Eat Drink Paleo www.eatdrinkpaleo.com.au

Lunch

Method:

Ingredients: 1⁄2 cup mixed quinoa 1 1⁄2 cups water 4 nori sheets 2 tablespoons umeboshi plum vinegar, or apple cider vinegar 1⁄2 small cucumber, washed and cut into batons 1⁄2 an avocado, peeled and thinly sliced lengthways 1⁄4 punnet of fresh alfalfa 1⁄2 a small crunchy carrot, washed, trimmed wasabi and pickled ginger, to serve Firstly we want to cook our quinoa, remember this cooks just like rice so place it into a pot and fill with water, bring to the boil. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until quinoa is cooked (it will fluff up to triple its original size and appear to have little ‘tails’). Remove from heat and set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Stir in 2 tablespoons of

36 NEW YOU Magazine

umeboshi plum or apple cider vinegar. Lay the first nori sheet on a cutting board or rolling mat. Spread a 1 cm thick layer of quinoa evenly over the sheet, leaving a 2 cm strip along the top end (to allow for sealing). Now lay a line of cucumber, avocado, alfalfa and carrot on top of the quinoa at the bottom edge (closest to you). Moisten the 2 cm strip at the top with a pastry

brush dipped in water. Pick up the bottom edge of the sheet and carefully roll it tightly (away from you). Repeat with remaining sheets. Serve with tamari, wasabi and ginger. Be careful; the wasabi sauce is pretty spicy! Recipe from Lola Berry www.lolaberry.com

Dinner

Raw Zucchini Pasta with Walnut & Mushroom Sauce Ingredients: 1 cup raw walnuts 1 or 2 garlic cloves 100g mushrooms 1tbs Spanish onion 3tsp Nama Shoyu, Tamari or Soy Sauce 1 tsp fresh thyme Small handful fresh parsley Splash extra virgin olive oil Freshly ground black pepper 2-3 raw zucchini

Caramel Apple Balls

Method:

Serves 2-4

Sauce: Soak 1 cup (100g) raw walnuts in water for a few hours, or overnight. Grind garlic. Drain water from walnuts and mix in Thermomix or food processor with mushrooms, onion, Tamari, thyme, parsley, oil and pepper to taste. Mix until finely chopped, but not pulverised. Pasta: Cut strips of zucchini using a vege spiralizer or potato peeler and place in serving bowl. Spoon the sauce over the zucchini pasta and top with sauce. Recipe from Quirky Cooking www.quirkycooking.blogspot.com.au

Snack

Prep time 15 mins, Makes approx. 20 pc

Method:

Ingredients: 2 cups dried apples, 2 cups pitted dates, 3/4 cup coconut milk or cream 1/4 cup coconut oil , 1/4 cup almond meal + 3-4 tbl more for rolling 1/4 cup sunflower seeds (optional) Place the apples and dates into a processor. Combine for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is looking chopped but not a paste. With the motor still running pour in the coconut milk and coconut oil and continue to blend until the mixture forms a caramel coloured paste. This will take 4-5 minutes or more, depending on your food processor. Scrape down the sides at regular intervals. When the desired texture is achieved, add the sunflower seeds and pulse to combine (you

want the crunch to still be there so don’t blend too much) Remove the mixture from the food processor, turn out into a bowl and using your hands mix in the almond meal until rolling texture is achieved. Roll into approx. 20 balls and then roll the balls in the remaining almond meal. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until hardened. Recipe from Quirky Cooking www.quirkycooking.blogspot.com.au

THE ELUSIVE PURSUIT OF BEAUTY

Beuty. Is a complex thing. It is so subjective. One dictionary definition of beauty is a quality or a person or thing that gives intense pleasure or satisfaction to the mind. Beautiful women from all walks of life often do not see themselves as beautiful. Everyday we are bombarded with pictures of beautiful people – flawless skin, alluring eyes, luscious lips, beautiful smile, perfectly styled hair, attractive bodies and so on. We see them on magazines, billboards, television and advertisements. But the truth is… whilst most of us may dream of looking as ‘perfect’ as celebrities do, we know that it is highly unlikely we can be. After all, most of us do not have the personal stylists, trainers and minders to ensure we exercise a lot, keep fit, eat right and in small portions, dress well and follow a beauty regime of skin care, wrinkle relaxants, fillers, microdermabrasion, laser, IPL and the occasional nip and tuck when needed. Luckily, most of us do not have the time or the extreme public scrutiny as pressure to maintain these amazing looks. However, the pressure to look a particular way is largely driven by us as individuals. We want to look good for ourselves because looking good helps give us confidence. If we had a tummy free of the extra bulges and loose skin that having children has left us with, we could wear the clothes we use to wear and wear them with confidence. If we had the bump off our nose removed that makes us shy away from cameras and photo opportunities, we would look straight into the lens and smile confidently. If we could have the very large breasts reduced, we could stand up straight with our shoulders back and strut around with renewed confidence. If we could have the excess upper eyelid skin removed to open up our eyes, you could then appreciate the beauty of their colour and form…and then fall in love with us again and again. As a plastic surgeon, I see a lot of women and men who may feel that their appearances are affecting their self-esteem and confidence and any help of an improvement is welcomed with hope and excitement. Whilst we cannot carve you into a Jessica Alba or Ryan Reynolds, we may be able to help you get that flatter tummy or larger breasts or more youthful neckline you desire. It is essential that you are thoroughly assessed by your plastic surgeon, have realistic expectations of what is possible for you, understand what the risks and complications are and do your research well before embarking on any surgery. Having plastic surgery is a major decision and choosing the right surgeon for you is an important choice. Find out their qualifications and experience, examine their pre and postoperative photos, speak to testimonials and seek as many opinions as you can. Ultimately, a positive self-image and a healthy dose of vanity and feeling beautiful helps with boosting self esteem and self confidence which all contributes to happiness.

Louise Williams from Emotive Images has an unconventional approach to photography. 12 years of experience as a Psychologist has coloured her motivation for drawing out “the true self” of her photographic subjects. Her left-of-centre strategies help identify how her subject wants to be ‘seen’ by others. To do this Louise introduces an intentional and deliberate focus to her work. Each photo is taken with clear purpose, allowing the subject to come alive and show true emotion. Louise’s work undeniably provides a safe space for her clients to own who they are with no hesitation and no apology.

Weights and exercise equipment The No. 1 way to stay young and improve your appearance, both in mind and body, is to exercise four to six times a week. Sweat sessions keep your DNA young, which translates into looking younger than your real age.

Sunscreen and sunglasses

One of the top ways to slow down the aging process or lessen its effects is to use sunscreen religiously and don sunglasses every time you step outside, even when the sun isn’t bright. While the combination of sunscreen and sunglasses won’t magically get rid of any wrinkles you already have, it works by preventing future skin damage from occurring.

44 NEW YOU Magazine

Great mattress Sleep is when the body repairs itself, which means that it only takes a couple of nights of deprivation to leave you with dark circles, red eyes and a generally haggard appearance. To make your slumber as restorative as possible, it’s worth shelling out for an amazing mattress and making sleep a priority.

Good reusable water bottle Dehydration leads to parched, wrinkle-ridden skin. In fact, if you’ve ever noticed fine lines around your eyes that seem to appear and disappear, it’s a sure sign you’re not getting enough H2O. Staying hydrated is therefore essential to ensuring plump, youthful skin cells.

Antioxidant moisturiser As we age, our skin becomes drier. A moisturiser that’s full of antioxidants will not only drench the upper layers of your epidermis with a hydrating tonic but will also pump nourishing ingredients into your cells, helping skin retain its youthful elasticity.

Eye cream Eye cream is designed to hydrate and deliver nutrients to the sensitive, thin skin around your eyes, where wrinkles often first appear. Top products either plump up skin to minimise the appearance of any fine lines you presently have or target the cell turnover process to slow the formation of future wrinkles.

High-quality razor and shaving cream While grey facial hair can look distinguished on an older man, it’s unflatteringly aging on anyone under 45. Adopting a fuzz-free look will shave a few years off your mug. A clean-shave should also be coupled with soft skin, another sign of youth.

Exfoliant An exfoliant is any product that sloughs off dead skin cells and helps unclog pores. Removing all the gunk from your skin will reveal a new layer of cells, meaning your epidermis will be visibly brighter and younger looking. The skin cell turnover cycle takes approximately 28 days, so don’t exfoliate more than about once a month.

Multivitamins

Scalp stimulant/hair revitaliser A head of thick, lustrous hair signifies vitality. Products designed to combat thinning hair do so either by stimulating the scalp to encourage hair growth or by improving the quality of the hair you still have so that it appears fuller and more abundant.

Vitamins are micronutrients your body is not able to manufacture on its own, so they must be derived from outside sources. These micronutrients work from the inside out by feeding your cells, resulting in healthy skin when consumed in adequate quantities. Additionally, some vitamins prevent and repair cellular damage by neutralising harmful free radicals, thereby slowing aging.

Peptides Direct BY MELISSA SZALAI

Although awareness of Peptide supplementation to assist with combating aging and promoting health and fitness is increasing, many people are still unsure of what they are, and what they can achieve. According to Peptides Direct, Peptides involve the simple science of amino acids linked together, via peptide bonds. The company reports that Peptides are used for a variety of health, fitness and anti-ageing concerns, such as assisting with fat loss, building lean muscle, assisting with injury recovery, and increasing energy levels. Basically, Peptides are amino acid chains that act as messengers in the cellular world by telling your cells what to do. Peptides have a role in promoting the body’s Human Growth Hormone (HGH) - one of the world’s best kept secrets for optimal health. HGH is instrumentally important in this respect because its decline as we age is directly related to our health and quality of life. Modern medicine describes this decrease as a clinical syndrome called Growth Hormone Deficiency Syndrome. Peptides Direct’s Principal Anti-Ageing Doctor and Senior Scientist say Peptides can be beneficial in the process of stimulating Growth Hormone levels back to a level clinically predicted for your age to allow your body to perform at its peak, which allows you to feel youthful and rejuvenated. This is supported by a large number of clinical studies available that outline key benefits from Peptide

supplementation, including fat tissue reduction, assistance with weight loss, increased skin elasticity, texture, and tightness, lean muscle gains, increased energy, improved bone strength and density, all of which assist anti-ageing. The studies also reported benefits for increased libido, mental functioning, cardiovascular strength, kidney function, immunity and healing, hair texture, elevated HDL cholesterol and lowered LDL cholesterol. Hence, Peptides Direct’s research and development team are continually striving to develop new product funnels to assist with Peptide supplementation. Recognising that Peptides alone are not a miracle cure, the team works to combine supplementation to support the body through weight loss, strength and muscle gain, injury recovery and overall anti-ageing. The team also advises that neutraceuticals, diet, and exercise are also important factors in ensuring best clinical and real life outcomes for the use of Peptides – confident the benefits produced by Peptides can significantly increase the ability to reach health and fitness goals, and improve quality of life. Peptides Direct is an Australian company based in Queensland - committed to educating and informing clients about Peptides available in Australia. The Peptides Direct customer support team is available to answer any questions you may have.

OF IT! BREAST AUGMENTATION HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE 19TH CENTURY SURGEONS BEGAN EXPLORING ITS APPLICATIONS. Likewise, 20th century development of breast implants has seen exponential growth, addressing efficiency and safety issues to supply an increasing demand in reconstructive and aesthetic breast augmentation procedures. Today, surgeons around Australia undergo highly specialised training and continuing education to specialise in this field. Why?....because women in the 21st century are more informed; and recognise the value of decisions that will have a lasting impact on their lives, body image and self-esteem. Foremost, when considering any type of breast surgery it’s important to define who’s decision it really is. This might sound silly – “of course it’s my decision”. Yet it’s important to ascertain that your decision is not based on your partner’s, family or friend’s opinion, but on your own. Breast surgery, like any surgery, is serious business and can have risks. Take time to make your decision; ask yourself why it is important to you, and what you expect to achieve from the experience. When it’s clear it is your decision,

and you have a good understanding of what your desired outcome is, then you are ready to explore the options and qualified surgeons available to you. Whether it’s breast augmentation to enhance size and shape, a lift for breasts sagging after having children or due to aging, reconstruction post mastectomy, or reduction for aesthetics and comfort, planning ahead plays a key role in obtaining a positive result. Start with researching surgeons who specialise in the procedure you are thinking about. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons website posts a comprehensive list of qualified surgeons. The website can also assist with information about procedures, and questions to ask your surgeon. Questions will include if the procedure is right for you, which implant to achieve your size and shape goals, the best position for the implant, if you will need anaesthetic, where the surgery will be done, what is required before and after surgery, scarring, and costs. Your health factors highly pre and post-operative. Being close to

your ideal weight can help reduce complications. Your surgeon may also advise you to stop smoking, and avoid aspirin and red wine for a period of time prior to surgery. Planning ahead also includes organising help at home after surgery, especially if you have children, to allow for a restful recovery. Focusing on the new you, will get you through. Yes, you will have been told to expect a degree of discomfort and that your breasts will experience some swelling. Your surgeon will have given you advice and measures to assist with these complaints. Yet, you are already thinking about how excited you will be to see the end result. Following doctor’s orders - from prescribed antibiotics and pain medication, rest, a healthy diet, and no vigorous exercise or lifting for a set time are essential for a smooth recovery. Remember, it takes approximately six weeks for the final size of the breasts to be determined post surgery. So wait to shop for that new bra. It will be worth it!

He has been helping Australians regain a youthful appearance of both the face and body shapes for more than 20 years - performing in excess of 10,000 liposuctions. Dr Lanzer has been selected as the exclusive cosmetic surgery authority on Australia’s new internet/TV station Healthy MeTV, which will offer the latest information in medicine and health, and focus on understanding developments in cosmetic surgery. Such accolades reflect Dr Lanzer’s dedication to public awareness of what’s new and relevant in cosmetic therapies of the face and body. As a visionary in his field, Dr Lanzer has helped pioneer many procedures since the early 1990s. Notably, Dr Lanzer helped convene the first hands on teaching conference on Tumescent Liposuction in 1992. This brought him into the limelight of the Australian media with appearances on the popular Midday show with Ray Martin and the Tonight Live with Steve Vizard. This was followed be being one of the first doctors to use laser treatment for wrinkles, eyelid rejuvenation and laser removal of hair, veins, pigmentation and tattoos. He subsequently began specialising in Mega liposuction in 1996 to address reducing body fat in overweight people. In 2000 Dr Lanzer helped develop and co-pioneered Breast Reduction via Liposuction, publishing his results in international literature. He then broke new ground with the Suture Lift method of lifting the facial skin, and appeared on television both in Australia and the US. Because men, as well as women were becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of cosmetic surgery, in 2005 Dr Lanzer was featured in the media highlighting cosmetic surgery for males. He has since integrated several procedures for men into his practice, including the new ‘Six pack’ Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture, face rejuvenation and man boob reductions. Dr Lanzer then became the first doctor in Australia to use the new Photoneumatic therapy for acne, pre cleansing, hair removal and profusion. He is also responsible for developing a revolutionary Cosmetic Fat Bank - an Australian first in 2012; and has just introduced the Staple Lift procedure for augmentation to his practice. Dr Lanzer’s professional knowledge and experience have gained him recognition as a much sought after expert by the Australian television and print media, so it’s not surprising that when he has something to talk about, people listen. Such respect is well earned and reflects Dr Lanzer’s commitment to helping make positive changes to lives through a range of cosmetic procedures. This is no less relevant when it comes to breast augmentation. Everyone has a different image of their body, and how they would like to see their breast size. Dr Lanzer is offering a new and exciting procedure for breast

OF IT! enlargement called ‘Staple First’. He has trained in the staple first procedure with a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon in the US, who has performed more than 5000 breast augmentation procedures with this technique. “For women who suffer from a severe drooping of the breast or ptosis, a breast lift can be combined with a breast augmentation to lift and give volume,” says Dr Lanzer. Key advantages of ‘Staple First’ include the direct placement of the implant in the natural crease below the breast which hides the surgery. Implants go deep under the chest muscle reducing issues of breast tissue monitoring (including mammograms as the implant is separated from the actual breast tissue) later in life, and give a natural shaping. Because a saline implant is used, it removes the risks associated with silicon leakage and allows for a

smaller incision. A deep saline implant is also said to feel natural. A breast lift involves cutting out loose skin of the breasts so they sit higher. The maximum amount of skin is removed however sometimes it can be difficult to predict what should be removed. The ‘Staple First’ operation allows the surgeon to see the possible end result before any skin is actually cut out. This means that the surgeon has the confidence to excise maximum skin since he can see how it will look. The interim stage is performed with staples that are removed before the final treatment. Dr Lanzer ensures every patient is well informed to ensure they understand the process and any associated risks for any procedure he provides; and offers free no obligation advice based on more than 25 years’ experience.

that achieve the breast she desires.” Dr Timms says he has seen an increase in cosmetic surgery in recent years for mothers in their late 30s and early 40s, who feel their breasts look older than they are.

Although a woman may want to change the shape and appearance of her breasts, Dr Timms says she needs to have a full understanding of the recommended procedure and any risks involved.

“Women’s bodies can change considerably following pregnancy and child birth as can their self-image and self-esteem.”

“Our initial consultation is important in determining a patient’s requirements and the options available to achieve her goal,” says Dr Timms. “I then encourage them to take some time to think it through.” “My patients will rarely have just one consultation with me before surgery.” “Coming back for a second appointment gives them a chance to ask more questions, discuss risks and any concerns or anxiety they may have about the procedure.”

“So I am vigilant when it comes to my patients’ expectations - in particular these mothers.” “Someone may come in and say her friend had 350cc implants and that’s what she wants, yet that may be totally unsuited to her”. “I take the time to show the patient what size implant will give them the best result. I use the Vectra XT 3D imaging system, which demonstrates the likely outcome of breast surgery particularly in breast augmentation.”

“I tell my patients – I will only do what you feel comfortable is right for you – it’s not your partner’s nor anyone else’s decision.”

“Implants are manufactured at different widths for various volumes.” “So to assist a patient to make their decision I look at breast width and the amount of breast tissue. The preferred volume is also determined by their overall body shape.”

“My patients will not feel pressured, nor feel restricted in making changes

“I also ensure my patients are fully aware of any possible risks involved

to guide them towards a realistic expectation.” “It’s very rewarding to see breasts return to an age appropriate shape for mothers in their late 30s to early 40s.” “For them it isn’t about drawing attention to their breasts as much as it’s about wanting to feel comfortable with the result and confident about themselves.” “I enjoy my work, and my staff ensure all my patients are warmly welcomed, cared for and treated with dignity and compassion.”

Post Procedure Care Tip: No vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for four weeks. Wear a surgical bra under a sports support crop for added support and comfort. Recommendation: Choose an implant that will complement your body shape. Medicare may cover some of the cost of your breast procedure and this will be discussed at consultation with Dr Timms.

Every woman deserves to be beautiful, says Dr Philip Richardson of Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. One of Queensland’s most recognised surgeons specialising in breast augmentation, Dr Richardson adds that many women perceive beauty to include curvaceous, symmetrical and proportionate breasts. Dr Richardson is committed to helping women achieve this goal, utilising his extensive knowledge and experience, combined with advanced technology. An interest in medicine, influenced by watching his Dad – a GP, at work, was quickly followed by a desire to become a plastic and cosmetic surgeon for Dr Richardson, who graduated with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Queensland in 1993. “I liked the surgical aspect of medicine, and while on rotation in surgery during my training I found I really enjoyed reconstructive surgeries, he says.” “Upon graduating from UQ I was immediately accepted into the Plastic and Reconstructive training program where I completed four years of specialised training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mater Children’s Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.” “Moving into cosmetic plastic surgery was a natural progression, as it’s really an advanced form of reconstructive surgery.” After completing plastic surgical training, Dr Richardson decided to open his own practice - Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in Queensland’s Fortitude Valley in 2002. Dr Richardson is a member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons certified member of ASPS (Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons), ASAPS (Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), and RACS. He has published extensive articles on plastic surgery, and features an excellent blog on his website www.brisbaneplasticsurgery.com that answers many questions related to various aspects of breast surgery. Aside from his interest breast augmentation, Dr Richardson also performs breast reduction surgery - including male breast reduction for Gynaecomastia, and wrinkle injections at the Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Centre. The skilled, dedicated surgeon, who portrays a caring, straight-forward and honest style, also works as a visiting reconstructive surgeon at the Royal Children’s public hospital in Brisbane. Dr Richardson’s extensive education and experience is impressive, and offers reassurance to those who want to feel confident that their well-being and appearance are in the hands of a knowledgeable and skilled plastic and cosmetic surgeon.

any mothers will tell you that bringing a child into the world is an amazing part of life that brings much joy and satisfaction. Yet there are also things they may not choose to tell you, such as feeling a lack of confidence and self-esteem due to the appearance of their breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Accomplished Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Phil Richardson is keenly aware that while some mothers just put this scenario down to a fact of life, others look to breast augmentation to help boost their morale and promote a positive self-image. “It’s important for mothers to be aware of options available to them if they are not happy with their breasts,” says Dr Richardson. “Various things can be done – it’s just a matter of determining what’s best for each individual woman.” “Pregnancy brings about physical changes, including a change in breast size.” “Some may see an increase in their bust size in early pregnancy which continues, and may even progress, in women who breastfeed.” “For others breasts quickly decrease in size following the birth of their babies, or upon losing baby weight.” “This rapid decrease can greatly affect the volume, size, and shape of the breasts.”

OF IT! “The skin is lax, and the breasts look and feel droopy.” “Breast augmentation is ideal for increasing breast size using implants, which helps fill out the skin and provide extra volume and firmness.” “It also assists with a bit of nipple elevation.” Dr Richardson says a breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is another option, which raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape them.

S BRAGG PRE

This procedure can be done alone, or in conjunction with breast augmentation. As augmentation and breast lifts provide a more youthful and uplifted breast profile, Dr Richardson reports approximately 35% of his patients are mothers requesting these procedures. “Ideally you would wait until you have finished having children, but it can be done without cause for concern about having children in the future, or breastfeeding,” says Dr Richardson. “Most mothers ask what they can best achieve with breast augmentation, and if they will also need a breast lift.” “This is of course determined on an individual basis.” “They also generally ask how long it will last, which I advise is about 20 years on average.” “I also recommend post procedure visits every two years for an ultrasound and physical exam follow up.”

S BRAGG POST

Post procedure care: Wear the soft bra provided for the first six weeks. You may shower after two days. No lifting for the first week to 10 days. May do light lifting at end of second week. If you have small children, organise someone to assist with their care. Do food shopping, and perhaps freeze some meals prior to surgery. Have someone come in to tidy up and do laundry for the first week. Recommendation: Placing breast implants under the muscle is usually safer and achieves better results in most patients.

Dr Newton began his path toward a career in plastic and cosmetic surgery with a degree in medicine from Sydney University. He then trained in general surgery at Royal Newcastle Hospital, before training in cosmetic and plastic surgery for two years in Melbourne and another 18 months in London, England. Dr Newton has achieved higher qualifications in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery; and is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr Newton says he enjoys his work immensely, and maintains a duty of care to provide his patients with a caring and understanding consultation to provide honest advice, and only perform surgery where it is appropriate. “I appreciate that for most people attending a plastic surgeon’s practice can be a stressful experience, and that it may have taken quite a while for a patient to summon up the courage to come through my door. “Bearing this in mind, my staff and I do our very best to make them feel as comfortable as possible during their consultation.” “I enjoy sculpting beautiful results that blend seamlessly with the body’s natural contours, and use only surgical techniques that are well proven in their effectiveness and safety.” Dr Newton performs surgery in all areas of plastic cosmetic surgery, including surgeries to the breast - breast enlargement, breast reduction and breast reconstruction; the abdomen – including a variety of abdominoplasties and liposuction; and the face – for eyelids, the nose, forehead and the face itself and ears. urprisingly, breast reduction procedures are as common as breast augmentation, according to Warners Bay NSW plastic surgeon John Newtown.

it’s important to wait until they have finished their breast growth, which is at about 17 to 18 years of age, before looking into any breast reduction procedure; and then usually with parental support.”

Dr Newton says he sees a quite a number of women who have suffered for many years with the awkwardness of large breasts, which can very uncomfortable, inconvenient and socially embarrassing.

“Women in their early to mid 30s to 50s are perhaps the largest group to enquire about breast reduction.”

“They admit to experiencing a wide range of issues that have led them to my door, often coming to me as a last resort to find a solution.” “Large, cumbersome breasts can create neck, shoulder and back pain.” “They also limit exercise options, and cause uncomfortable sweating and skin irritations.” “Finding clothes to fit is also difficult for these women.” “Emotionally, women with large breasts often experience selfconsciousness and feel awkward in the company of people who appear to focus on their breasts.” “For young girls, especially between 13 and 14 years of age, this is particularly distressing.” “However,

62 NEW YOU Magazine

“Beyond their 50’s, women will often come to see me because their family or friends have encouraged them to seek help for a condition that has been a life-long problem. Yet, in many cases they come back post-operatively and tell me the wish that they’d had a breast reduction years ago!” In terms of breast reduction procedures, liposuction and breast surgery options are determined on an individual basis. Dr Newton says liposuction, for a young woman who has not had children, may be used to reduce breast volume with minimal scarring. Nipple sensation remains normal and breastfeeding is not compromised. Liposuction is used when the patient has a good degree of skin elasticity and good quality breast tissue. It is however limited in how

much can be achieved. Traditional breast reduction surgery is more invasive, involving the cutting of breast tissue and surgical removal of breast tissue, resuspension of breast tissue and then suturing of wounds. It does, however, allow for removal of a greater amount of tissue and the opportunity to more accurately sculpt and lift the breast. “The nipple remains attached and is moved up,” concludes Dr Newton. “The amount of droop the patient has prior to surgery may mean some loss of sensation of the nipple, which will be discussed in pre-op consultations.” “Complications post-op are not common, but could include infection or necrosis (death of skin) which is very rare.” “My breast reduction patient satisfaction rate is very high; and it’s very rewarding to see them enjoying a better quality of life – being physically active, wearing clothes they thought they never could, and having much more confidence in themselves. It is one of those operations which ends up with a happy patient and a happy doctor!”

ven in ancient times, the Egyptian, Indian, Japanese and Greek societies all had their own methods for looking younger, and treating conditions like wrinkles, stretchmarks and scarring. The renowned Egyptian beauty Cleopatra even penned a book on the topic. Our own generation has seen the emergence of day spas, offering topical skin treatments, exfoliants and peels, body wraps, hair care and beauty services. But demand for more effective, noticeable results soon resulted in the rise of medi-spas, introducing injectables, lasers and minimallyinvasive medical cosmetic procedures in a relaxing, therapeutic environment. Treatments are delivered by cosmetic doctors or nurses, usually in a private setting to keep a clients’ secret under wraps, and completed in minimal time. Some medi-spas also combine

traditional beauty and skincare treatments, while others form part of larger cosmetic and plastic surgery clinics. Once reserved only for the rich and famous, the type of treatments delivered at medi-spas are now accessible to more people than ever before. Modern advancements in technology and technique have also dramatically reduced both treatment and recovery times, meaning many procedures can be completed in one short visit, even during a lunch break. With a growing number of medispas opening their doors across Australia, the hardest part is deciding which one is best for you. This month, NewYou shines the spotlight on some of the leading clinics around the country. Learn about the services and treatments they offer, the technology and equipment they use, and of course their qualifications and experience as well as personal philosophies and motivations. My work as a cosmetic physician is at the core of my passion. I believe in the importance of artistry behind cosmetic procedures and focus my skills at delivering natural looking results. My approach integrates exceptional clinical outcomes with empathy, compassion and care.” Dr Ehsan Jadoon holds medical registrations in Australia and the UK. He is certified by The American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in cosmetic medicine through The Australasian College of Cosmetic Medicine. He is one of the few cosmetic practitioners in Australia to hold a formal postgraduate qualification in this field.

to pursue. I think I consider myself more so an artist than a doctor, it’s my passion and I love it.”

From the plush rugs, wooden floors and custom furniture to the elaborate mirrors and chandeliers, this inviting space feels more like a high-end day spa than a medical clinic.

Medaesthetics Perth is one of the few clinics in Australia to offer 3D facial scanning, providing digital skin analysis and a preview of what the results will look like post-treatment. It is also the only clinic in the Western Australia to offer the most extensive range of skin resurfacing and rejuvenation laser platforms under one roof. These include Co2 Fractional Skin Resurfacing, Erbium Glass Tunable Full Field Resurfacing, Erbium Glass Fractional, Radio-wave Fractional Sublative and Diode Fractional Skin Resurfacing, capable of treating all facial skin complaints from fine lines to severe wrinkles and acne scarring.

But what lies within is exactly that – an exclusive cosmetic surgery practice specialising in face, body and skin procedures, using world leading surgical techniques and medical technology. The clinic was designed with comfort and privacy in mind – with rear car parking and only one patient in the waiting room at any one time. Appointments are also spaced to ensure discretion. Determined to create the ultimate client experience, Dr Jadoon completed the design work himself, demonstrating the same artistic skill and eye for detail evident in his cosmetic work. He has built a reputation for creating natural, fresh-faced results with his minimally invasive procedures, body sculpting and advanced laser treatments. “I have always been an artist and enjoy oil painting, and I’ve always had an eye for beauty and aesthetics,” he said. “Even when I was finishing my basic clinical rotations as a hospital doctor, I knew cosmetic medicine is what I wanted

Dr Jadoon is also one of very few practicing physicians in WA with a post graduate degree in cosmetic medicine. And he holds high expectations of the level of training and qualifications of his staff, only employing qualified doctors to deliver Schedule 4 treatments, including injectables and skin resurfacing treatments. “There is a niche in the market for high end work; clients walk into a clinic expecting to see a doctor and with Medaesthetics that’s what they receive. Every patient is treated like a VIP, and receives only the best of care.” This same level of care is extended to patients at satellite clinics in Darwin, Alice Springs, Kalgoorlie, Broome, Esperance and Sydney, where Dr Jadoon delivers a range of minimally invasive procedures.

The evolution of cutting edge Medispas in Australia has seen Brisbane Anti Wrinkle and Skin Studios (BAWS) emerge as a leader in the industry. The success of BAWS, located at East Brisbane, Redcliffe, Springfield and Mackay has a lot to do with key components – excellent menu of services, experinced professional staff, high quality range of treatment products and customer affordability. BAWS was established on the foundations of Dr Richard Hogben’s passion for Cosmetic Medicine and Darren Smeath’s industry knowledge and experience. This extraordinary combination has provided a winning formula that consistently achieves a high level of customer satisfaction in the areas of Cosmetic Injectables, Dermal Treatments and Skin Care, Laser Treatments and Cellulite Treatments using the latest in advanced technology - i-Lipo method. Dr Hogben’s passion for, and experience in Cosmetic Medicine that spanned more than a decade, led to his becoming a fulltime Cosmetic Doctor in 2011. Today, Dr Hogben is a national trainer for Promoitalia Facial Threads, and regarded as an industry leader in Cosmetic Medicine specialising in Blepharoplasty, Liposculpture and Sclerotherapy procedures. Darren also has an impressive profile as the ex-national Business Manager for Allergan Australia, producers of industry leading products such as Botox and Juvederm. Darren concentrated on building business foundations and marketing strategies within the largest cosmetic accounts in Australia and New Zealand - growing the industry through structured business platforms. “My experience with Allergan helped me identify the fact that there were two distinct types of cosmetic clinics,” says Darren. “Firstly, clinics marketing to the high income earners, providing

them with five star clinic environments with treatments given by well-trained cosmetic injectors and therapists - which come with a five star price tag.” “Secondly, clinics marketing to people looking for the cheapest option, offering well below average prices, with treatments provided by newly trained injectors and therapists.” “Seeing a gap in the market, Dr Hogben and I wanted to create a cosmetic clinic that would provide excellent customer service, cutting edge treatments and be at the forefront of skin technology.” “The clinics would use only industry leading products, offer affordable prices and employ highly trained medical and dermal staff with an overall commitment to client focused outcomes.” “The end result - affordable treatments, an excellent treatment provider skill set and exceptional customer experiences.” “So we began with a clinic in Mackay called Allure Anti Wrinkle and Skin Studio, followed by the BAWS clinics in Brisbane.” “We are very proud to have achieved our vision with these clinics in a relatively short period of time - offering the perfect mix of experienced clinicians, the best products on the market, and individualised treatment plans to suit client needs.” Darren adds the BAWS vision over the next 24 months is to add more clinics to the brand using the same winning formula, leading the way in advanced Medispa results driven service. T

hread lifts using the latest Astarte Absorbable Threads are increasingly becoming the preferred choice, according to Dr Buddy Beaini, principal doctor and director of Sydney’s MD Cosmedical Solutions Clinics. “The unique Astarte Thread Lift technique allows me to provide a customised treatment for clients who want a more subtle, natural look as a versatile treatment option for facelifts, neck lifts, brow lifts, jowl correction and cheek augmentation,” says Dr Beaini. He adds that the Astarte Thread Lift helps to bridge the gap between anti-ageing treatments performed in beauty salons and more traditional surgical facelifts. “Because the result of ‘softer’ beauty salon treatments can be relatively minimal there’s a tendency for patient’s to feel their expectations have not been met.” “However, patients face the dilemma of perhaps a less than natural look with a surgical facelift. As with any surgery there are risks, and those related to surgical

facelifts can include nerve paralysis, lopsidedness and unwanted scarring.” “Astarte Thread Lifts are ideal for patients opting for a non-surgical procedure, providing the benefit of a minimally invasive approach to achiever a more youthful appearance without these risks.” Dr Beaini says these revolutionary absorbable threads are achieving amazing results due to a distinct design feature called cogs. When inserted under the skin these cogs cling to the facial soft tissue. “This action lifts the tissue creating a scaffolding effect that holds the tissue in place. As the threads dissolve over a period of nine to 12 months a new support structure of collagen develops,” he explains. “Thus, the absorbable threads help rebuild the support structure of the skin from within and contribute to skin firmness that can help initiate improved skin colour, tone and texture.” Dr Beaini advises that the best candidates for this procedure are men and women between the ages of 30 – 70 years.

What to Expect:

Added benefits:

The Astarte Thread Lift is a simple non-surgical clinic procedure that takes approximately 30 – 90 minutes without general anaesthesia or skin incisions. There is minimal discomfort, and downtime is usually three to five days. Patients can return to normal activities after a few days. Results are immediate and reported to last from three to five years.

As the threads are absorbable they should not have an impact on any further thread lifts or other lifts at a later stage. The Astarte Thread Lift can also be followed by tops ups.

TOUCHDOWN HALO BY SCITON, THE WORLD’S FIRST HYBRID FRACTIONAL LASER (HFL) FOR FRACTIONAL ABLATIVE RESULTS WITH NON ABLATIVE DOWNTIME Great news for patients wanting the best possible results from their laser treatment with the lowest possible downtime. Sciton®, a leading manufacturer of high-quality laser and light systems in the aesthetic medical market, announced that Halo, the world’s first and only hybrid fractional laser, applying tunable non-ablative and ablative wavelengths in a single pass to maximize results and reduce downtime will be available for global distribution later this year. “Halo is not an incremental product. It is the culmination of an extensive 4 year investigation involving new understanding of laser tissue physics combined with state-of-the-art implementation of all new technology” said Dan Negus, President of Sciton. “This product has some very exciting innovations that will excite a lot of users. Launching Halo further demonstrates Sciton’s long commitment to excellence and innovation across all types of resurfacing.” Halo delivers both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to the same microscopic treatment zone: 1470 nm for coagulation and 2940 nm for ablation. The 1470 nm wavelength is used for delivering between 100 and 700 microns of coagulation to the epidermis and dermis, where solar damage exists. to the epidermis of the skin. This gives Halo the unique ability to provide separate treatments for the epidermis, which heals quickly, and dermis which remodels more slowly over time. The operator may choose one of three coverage-base treatment levels, and Halo calculates the exact amount of energy necessary to complete a safe and effective treatment. Intelligent energy delivery, combined with Dynamic Thermal Optimization, ensures precise and even treatments, each and every time. The benefits of a Halo treatment include both epidermal and deeper dermal pigmentation and tone and texture in the skin. “Sciton’s Halo is the first real innovation in lasers in the last decade”, says Plastic Surgeon Jason Pozner, MD, FACS. “Hybrid Fractional Lasers are the next logical evolution in fractional resurfacing. With Halo, I can achieve results which I would have only expected from an ablative fractional laser, but get downtimes that I would normally see with a nonablative fractional laser. ASK THE

EXPERT With over 20 years post-graduate surgical experience in ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery Dr Evans’ principal interests are Facial Plastic Surgery, Nasal Surgery (both cosmetic and functional) and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. Dr Evans is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons South Africa. He is a member of numerous committees and associations. How important is scar minimisation as part of your work as a facial plastic surgeon? Scar minimisation is crucial; it is the signature an artist puts on his painting. It also appears to be the one single aspect of surgery that raises most concern in the patient. How frequently do prospective patients express concerns about scarring as part of their decision to undergo a facial surgery procedure? Almost all patients invariably raise concerns about the scar when undergoing any form of surgery, let alone aesthetic surgery. How do you approach surgery in order to minimise scarring? The patient’s personal history relating to their skin type, thickness and previous keloids should be checked as well as medications and drugs that influence the repair processes. To minimize skin scarring the incision needs to be placed within natural facial or low tension lines and accurate incisions with avoidance of heat or diathermy should be used where possible. Careful handling of the skin edges with delicate instrumentation helps. What range of treatments do you use following surgery for scars in your practice? Following surgery ointment usually prevents cicatrisation of the incisions and silicone ointment has been shown to be useful for this. Other early treatment may include local antibiotic creams, minimizing trauma to the incision and keeping the incision site

clean. Taping the incision to reduce tension is sometimes needed. Aside from the surgery-related issues, do patients present to you with existing scars? In these instances, what is your main approach? I do see patients presenting with existing scars frequently. My “armamentarium” includes silicone, intralesional injectable steroids, deep effects fractional ablative laser treatments, and intralesional PRP (platelet rich plasma). How does Stratamed and Stratderm fit in with your treatment protocols? Strataderm appears to help reduce raised or thickened scars if used regularly over 4-8 weeks postop. Stratamed has been useful to place early in the postoperative scar while still healing. I have also found it to be useful on early laser wounds to prevent drying and crusting. It is well tolerated and I have not seen it excite any inflammatory response, which is good.

HIGH CLUB PEARLY WHITE GATES OF COSMETIC DENTISTRY Some of us like to showcase our pearly whites while others prefer to keep them in the drawer where they belong. There are all sizes, shapes, colours or stains, arrangements, detachables that sit in a glass beside the bed and ones that house a bit of bling (like James Bond’s henchman, Jaws, in The Spy Who Loved Me). Some teeth are chipped, crooked, cracked, well worn, spaced, over crowded or simply missing and their owners want them changed. Welcome to cosmetic dentistry. Treatments that improve the way our teeth look come under the heading ‘cosmetic dentistry’ and most dentists can perform the work of a ‘cosmetic dentist’ while some do have specific training*. As with any cosmetic procedure, the advice is to know your dentist’s experience and training and view before and after results of genuine patient photos. Be informed and understand what you are having done, the outcome(s) and of course the cost.

THE RIGHT TREATMENT The latest aesthetically pleasing and comfortable cosmetic dentistry options produce beautiful teeth. Most repair, replace, improve shape and colour while some even close gaps. Every technique serves a purpose to achieve an outcome that needs to reflect you and compliment your features. To begin, talking to a dentist is helpful before whitening or bleaching your teeth. Surface stains can be professionally cleaned to look much whiter while crowns are an option when stains are visible inside the enamel. Doing home treatments, after having your custom-made set of plastic trays created to house the whitening gel, is very common and a less expensive choice. However, the degree of whitening depends on the type and the intensity of the stain. Toothcoloured fillings also create a lighter, brighter smile and micro-abrasion (a technique using an acid paste and an abrasive) can erase discolouring from the tooth’s surface. Repairing chipped or stained teeth with tooth-coloured resin fillings is called bonding, and is common at most dental clinics and can reduce small gaps. If you’re a nail or pen biter, enjoy chewing chops or prefer opening packets with your teeth, then you need to rethink your habits if porcelain veneers are going to give you that gorgeous grin. These thin pieces of porcelain, bonded to the teeth, are the workhorse of the dental world and, when done right and looked after, can last a lifetime. Clear, plastic retainers called Invisalign, are an option to guide crooked or gapped teeth into position where results may take several months to two years. Cosmetic recontouring to reshape teeth or Laser Gum Recontouring to slightly change the height of gums can produce a more youthful look for teeth that have seen years of wear and tear. Contouring can also be done in combination with other treatments. The latest cosmetic inventions create teeth that beam and boost self-confidence but speak with the experts, the people who know their enamel, first to be certain of a smile. In the mean time, brush, floss and look after the ivories. HIGH CLUB

YOUR SMILE BY MICHELLE DRYBURGH

We all know prevention is better than cure, but it’s never too late to achieve a beautiful smile.

W

hether you want your teeth whitened, straightened, lengthened or replaced, modern advancements in dentistry are making it easier than ever to achieve the look you want. And at Melbourne’s Paltoglou Dental Centre, you can see the end result before any work begins. Using Digital Smile Analysis, Dr George Paltoglou and his team have the ability to show patients what their finished smile will look like. Dr Paltoglou says the technology is invaluable for giving patients the confidence needed to proceed with even the most complex dental procedures. “It certainly helps patients to see what their new smile can look like before they commit to treatment,” he says. “It’s like buying a car, you want to see it first.” Paltoglou Dental Centre is located in Toorak, and provides general, corrective and cosmetic dental services – or aesthetic restoration, as Dr Paltoglou prefers to call it. In his almost 30 years in the profession, he has seen a shift away from the perfectly straight and bright white ‘Hollywood smiles’, to embrace a more naturally beautiful look. “Even Princess Kate had a small makeover of her teeth about five years ago, they were made a little bit longer, but the slight rotations she had are still there,” he says.

“There is beauty in imperfection.” And while looks are important, functionality is everything. Every treatment performed by Dr Paltoglou is carried out with a longlasting solution in mind.

“Healthy gums and strong teeth are sine qua non for success,” Dr Paltoglou says. “No restoration will last forever, but here at Paltoglou Dental Centre, we don’t shy away from using the best materials and techniques available to our profession globally. With this in mind, we aim to treat the least number of teeth in the most conservative way possible. “If we can have a natural tooth in the right position, that is the best outcome. Mother Nature always does a better job than any dentist. But if a tooth is damaged, we repair it with the intention of replicating or mimicking nature wherever it is needed.” As well as correcting and beautifying teeth, perhaps one of Dr Paltoglou’s most important roles is educating patients about oral health. “There is no point doing beautiful work if the foundations aren’t right, so it’s important patients know how to maintain the health of their mouth.” Also essential, Dr Paltoglou says, is seeking treatment for any dental condition – whether it be for resolving pain or enhancing your smile. All too often he sees patients who avoid seeing a dentist because they fear needles or the drill. He says they needlessly suffer from pain, health complications, or embarrassment and a serious impact on self-confidence. “The treatments we have available to us today are much more advanced than they were just 20 years ago,” Dr Paltoglou says. “Treatments like dental implants were rarely considered for the general public, but now it’s a standard procedure for most dentists. This has revolutionised the dental profession, providing the ability to achieve outstanding patient outcomes. The profession has certainly come a long way with research and development of new materials. And at Paltoglou Dental Centre, we deliver the very best in care.”

POWER of an ATTRACTIVE

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, first impressions count. Perth implant & reconstructive dentist Dr Misagh Habibi examines the science of first impressions and the proven pull power of an attractive smile.

It’s

an age-old expression: Don’t judge a book by its cover. The wisest may glean something from this mantra, but 99.99% of us judge by first impressions at every moment, most of the time completely subconsciously. There is an art, science and of course a business to making a positive first impression. Successful companies spend sizeable resources in its pursuit. Cosmetic plastic and reconstructive surgeons and dentists see patients whose goal is to improve their ability to make a positive first impression. In my experience, what most patients want is for you to help them achieve a smile that allows them to be themselves, to act confidently and to remove a selfconsciousness that stifles their every day social and professional lives. In this way, the attractive smile seems not to be just a concern of Hollywood’s rich and famous, but a basic need of every day folk like you and me.

7 SECONDS TO IMPRESS There are many factors that can contribute to making a positive first impression, and a lot of them work through our subconscious within seconds of meeting someone. Research indicates that you are scanned within seconds of a first meeting and that a ‘snapshot’ first impression judgement is made within 30 seconds. Some experts have purported this to take place in as little as 7 seconds. In this time people form fairly lasting impressions about your intelligence, success, confidence, competence, physical fitness, professionalism, your salary and even which newspaper you read. Sociolinguist Professor A. Mehrabian studied the impact of three elements of a face-to-face encounter: Verbal, vocal, and nonverbal. His

88 NEW YOU Magazine

studies showed that 7% of our initial impact comes from our verbal message (i.e. what we have to say). Another 38% of the impact comes from our vocal qualities (i.e. tone, rate, inflection). But a whopping 55% comes from the visual element, which includes our facial expressions, body language and smile. Here’s the significance of this research. It’s not that your verbal content doesn’t matter. It’s that if you don’t look and sound confident or credible, then it doesn’t matter whether you are or not. Few people will actually listen to what you have to say if your image is not congruent with your message. Blocks could involve tone and manner of speech, posture, image, style, and of course, your smile. It is common for a person to carry the burden of blocks in these areas with them every day, resulting in stress, self-esteem issues, and lack of

confidence in approaching social situations. I believe that from all these, the smile is the greatest factor. Because no matter what our social or professional circles, our image or posture, our dress, we all smile (or at least should smile) in our daily interactions. Smiling is part of the human being’s natural social currency, perhaps even more than language itself. People from all walks of life, speaking different languages, can make a connection, can see another person, in a simple smile.

THE POWER OF SMILE ATTRACTIVENESS Psychologists have found a profound, detailed relationship between aspects of a smile’s architecture within a person’s face, and how it defines certain character traits that are projected by that patient. A team from a Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands found that smile attractiveness has a penetrating psychosocial impact – affecting both how a person is judged and also how they judge themselves. For example, smiles with disproportional display of gums against teeth were judged unfavourably and correlated with characteristics of neuroticism and lower self-esteem. It’s that specific. More recent research from psychologist Dr Anne Beall PhD confirms strongly that one’s smile plays a significant role in the perception that others have of our personality and appearance – that one’s teeth alone can have an impact on overall attractiveness and perceptions of personal attributes. In Beall’s study, before and after pictures of patients who had received cosmetic dentistry treatments were used to assess 528 people’s character judgements and assumptions. Various, specific character trait judgements were correlated with the pictures. The results were an advertisement for cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. They revealed that people were consistently viewed as being more attractive, intelligent, happy, successful in their career, friendly, interesting, kind, wealthy, and popular with the opposite sex with smiles that had been altered by cosmetic dentistry versus their original smiles. A Canadian study which assessed attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 5 found that for each increase in the scale, a person earned an additional $2600 per month – and this was in the 1990s. We could perhaps extrapolate that for point increase in the scale of attractiveness, which might be achieved with say, a cosmetic dentistry treatment for someone suffering visible dental problems, that could equate to a whopping $93,600 per annum increase in income – 15 years ago! Then it should come as no surprise that poll results have shown that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success (74%), that an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to the opposite sex (96%) and that a smile is an important social asset (99.7%). In my practice, Roz Davies is one of hundreds of cases in point. She is an artist, art history lecturer, visual artist, cartographer and one time snakehandler. She is also a great fan of what my colleagues and I have achieved for her. Despite her accomplished credentials and diverse experience, Roz had always felt held back from her potential by her smile – until she underwent a major dental overhaul. “Before the treatment I was so embarrassed by the condition of my teeth I simply did not smile, and for the most part talked with an almost closed mouth, and from behind my hand.” Looking at Roz, it’s hard to believe this even though I had witnessed it not long ago. “People said they ‘didn’t notice’ but I feel they were simply being polite! How could the post treatment attract so much favourable comment if the ‘before’ wasn’t noticed!” Roz’s treatment was not simple or cheap. Her whole mouth was reconstructed by way of extractions, dental implants, porcelain crowns and veneers and more, which virtually transformed her appearance. Sounds like a literal mouthful and a bit daunting – but she found it to be far from. Using IV sedation, which is routine in our practice for advanced treatments, she quite literally enjoyed sleeping and waking to a new smile. “After the treatment the new smile affected me totally. It gave me the confidence to speak without hesitation, and to consider opportunities, personally and professionally, that I previously dismissed.” Roz’s new smile gave her the confidence to approach an executive committee, present a proposal, and make a deal which resulted in her publishing a book that would sell. “The research

for the book involved around 100 interviews – face to face – together with a lot of personal interaction… I would never have considered any of that with my pre-treatment teeth.” Asked what it has done for her personal life, Roz says “I laugh now! I’m a different person.” When we look into the science of how a smile affects character judgements and first impressions, and how it affects our daily behaviour, it shouldn’t be surprising that Roz’s experience is not unique. It is part and parcel of what happens when we treat many of our patients.

HOW SPEEDY IS YOUR SMILE? According to research by Glasgow-based Go Group, how quickly you shine your pearly whites can also shape the first impression others have of you. A grin that snaps ear-toear too quickly can lead to others thinking you are insincere. But a slow and naturally opening smile appears more genuine. In this study a team of business advisors examined how smiling can give clients a positive impression. They found that a swiftly appearing smile that does not extend to the eyes can signal to the client that you lack sincerity (fake smile). Whilst a natural genuine smile tends to flood the entire face and extend to the eyes. There is an added complexity in this process, which is seen when dealing with complex rehabilitative or cosmetic reconstructive dentistry. Patients who suffer from low selfesteem due to an unattractive smile actually hide their smiles in their facial expressions. The effect of this in their life is very profound, because they are not able to signal those signs of genuineness to others. They do not elicit the smile-induced endorphins in the people they interact with – despite the fact that their real ‘inner’ personality be very genuine, friendly and potentially outgoing. For these patients, we see time and time again how treatment can spark a wider transformative and empowering process. Patients like Roz walk into their review appointment as a different person, gleaming from ear to ear and transformed in their body language and communication style. This can often ‘open up’ more socially engaged and successful people in their careers and relationships.

THE GENUINE FACTOR What I like to call the Genuine Factor is something that I see too often overlooked by the novice cosmetic or reconstructive surgeon or dentist. I believe it to be crucial – but what is it? Consider how watching an episode of “Extreme Makeover” often leaves you in awe of what a new smile, a thoughtthrough wardrobe and a proper haircut can achieve for someone’s confidence and wellbeing. But are they sometimes too much? The Genuine Factor is the concept of blending in the image with the personality. For me it is the part of the job that makes it a service rather than a product. We aim to enhance people’s lives by helping their personalities come through with confidence, rather than feeding narcissistic imageobsessed tendencies. As Australians in particular, many of us tend to frown on people that try to be something they’re not. In contrast, we all respond positively to a genuine attractive smile, positive body language and friendly tone. So if you got those pearly whites gleaming keep up the brushing, regular check-ups and flaunt them. But if you ain’t blessed with a smile that reflects the genuine you, or you are struggling to hide your missing or false teeth or gums, don’t underestimate what the transforming artistry of a good cosmetic or reconstructive dentist can do in your life. It might just help your true character shine. *Self-esteem issues often have deeper roots than physical ones. If any aspect of your appearance is causing you stress or lack of confidence, it may be advisable to seek a professional counselor’s services. All medical treatments may carry risk and should only be carried out under the guidance of a medical or dental professional.

Following an incident of trauma, Asanka suffered from years of fevers, recurrent infections, pain and bone splinters in his upper jaw, it was eventually revealed that infected teeth inside his upper jaw and sinuses were the culprit. Unfortunately after surgeries to address this, Asanka was left without upper teeth and with a painfully sharp jaw bone. Following a CT scan, photographic records and detailed 3D computerized planning, the sharp areas in Asanka’s upper jaw were corrected and four dental implants in accordance with the All-on-4 method were placed. This was all performed during one comfortable sedation visit. On Day 2 Asanka had a cosmetic fitting and on Day 3 he walked away with his new smile, never looking back.

After a sporting trauma to the face some years before, Angie’s dental issues became worse over time with early signs of infective gum disease advancing silently as the years passed. Eventually the teeth lost their bony foundation until no hope of keeping them remained. With detailed 3-D computer analysis, Dr Habibi planned the procedure around the limited jaw bone that remained available. Angie’s full mouth extractions and All-on-4 upper and lower jaw implant replacement procedure was done just a week before a significant family event – her daughter’s wedding. Needless to say there were some brilliant smiles in the celebratory family photos!

Alex had a lot of problems with his teeth when he was young. “I lost quite a few teeth and where I grew up, if you had problems with your teeth, they came out. I had some damaging work done on my teeth, causing severe gingivitis. I thought maybe I would need dentures, as failing bridgework had been in my mouth for 26 years.” Alex came to learn the only way to avoid dentures was to remove the existing teeth and get implant replacements. Alex had full mouth extractions and 16 dental implants plus bone grafting to his jaws under sedation, whilst he snoozed comfortably. You’d be hard pressed to spot Alex now without a smile from ear to ear.

Jayde’s teeth had become misaligned in the front once her wisdom teeth came through and she became conscious of crowding. Her smile line had also started to narrow. She felt that this was impacting on her confidence at work. Invisalign treatment allowed Jayde to straighten her teeth without metal braces. After seeing many of her friends struggle after eating out with things caught in their braces, the ability to take the clear aligners out and brush/floss her teeth easily was appealing for Jayde. She now wears the clear retainers at night only and we are pleased to see her dazzle with her wider, brighter smile.

THE ALL-ON-4 IMMEDIATE TEETH REPLACEMENT SOLUTION (BEAUTIFUL NEW TEETH IN JUST 2-3 DAYS*) If you have loose, annoying dentures or advanced dental disease requiring extractions, The All-on-4 and All On 4 Plus teeth replacement techniques can offer an attractive and immediate solution. Final, fixed and reliable replacement of ALL teeth ON FOUR dental implants... Within 24-48 hrs. This replacement method can be a cost effective and immediate solution for people who want to replace loose, annoying or unnatural dentures with a fixed set of teeth. Our All-on-4, All On 4 Plus and Zygoma Plus dental implant methods usually avoid bone grafting and staged procedures, creating beautiful new and fully functional smiles immediately.*

CONSULTATION & PLANNING At your initial consultation, Dr Habibi assesses your situation and advises whether the All-on-4 solution (or any other solution) is suited to your needs. Following an X-ray, photographs and examination, treatment details and outcomes are discussed. As part of the treatment planning process, a 3D scan of your jaw is taken and impressions made of your current teeth or gums.

TREATMENT WORKING DAY ONE: IMPLANT SURGERY The jaw bone is prepared and shaped to act as the ideal foundation for the dental implants. Usually, just four dental implants are placed to act as a foundation for an entire set of new teeth. Wounds are closed with dissolving stitches and impressions are taken. This procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic, but many patients choose to snooze comfortably through the procedure using IV sedation.

WORKING DAY TWO: TRY-IN OF TEETH Your new teeth, which were designed in the planning stage, are set in wax and tried in the mouth, attached to the dental implants. You can see how they will look and test your speech and bite. Dr Habibi and his prosthetist and technician will ask for your feedback, take photographs and make minor adjustments.

WORKING DAY 3-4: YOUR NEW SMILE Your new teeth are inserted and attached to the dental implants. These teeth are designed to immediately

NE W S U R G E RY What does your surgery say about you as a healthcare professional?

Form follows function. It’s been one of the fundamental tenets of modern design over the last century. While intuitively it seems to make good sense, does it allow for, or place appropriate value on patient comfort or an individual surgeon’s personality when it comes to their working environment? A modern medical surgery needs to be as efficient as possible to accommodate the requirements of those who operate in it, but this efficiency should not come at the cost of patient comfort or the opportunity to create a unique positive patient experience. Visiting a surgery can be an anxious time for many patients and although you may be confident in your ability to treat them, does your surgery, and indeed their patient experience accurately reflect that level of

confidence? Creating an environment that strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and patient comfort while communicating your unique personality is a difficult task and one best left to an expert. This is where a specialist surgery designer can help.

Consult a Specialist or DIY?

As an intelligent medical professional, you may think that the design of your surgery is something you can do yourself. After all, you know yourself better than anyone and you can surely bring a sense of your personality to the design. While this may seem like a good option at the outset, more often than not the result and the process are less than optimal. Good surgery design requires a specific set of skills and disciplines tempered with considerable experience for the best results. Like surgery, it is best left to a specialist.

continued from previous page

NEW SURGERY Another consideration is whether to contract a complete design and build solution or tendering each part of the overall project and coordinating it yourself. When the design and construction of your new surgery has been spread among several different providers, the responsibility is diminished. If things go wrong you may find yourself in a situation where contractors are blaming each other and you are stuck in the middle with an expensive mess. Coordinating the design and build of your new surgery is an extremely time intensive activity that requires a lot of energy and specialist knowledge. By engaging a complete design and build solution provider, you are able to take a behind the scenes approach and continue your normal working life while your new surgery takes shape. In addition to the time benefits, one of the biggest strengths in contracting a complete design & build solution is that the responsibility for the outcome is with a single company. There is no place to hide if things don’t go according to plan.

The Design Brief

A specialist surgery designer will take a holistic approach, taking the time to understand your particular needs and desires before starting to design your surgery. Through a series of meetings with you and any other key stakeholders, the designer will compile your thoughts and wishes and those of your key staff into a comprehensive design brief that fully captures the intent of your new surgery. Whether conducted in person or over the phone, these discussions give you an opportunity to tell the designer how you work, the particular equipment you require, your patient demographic and any specific themes or feeling you’d like to convey in your new surgery. Most importantly, your designer will come to know and understand your personality and values and communicate these in the design concept. The design brief is the cornerstone of the new development, informing all design decisions for the project. Getting it right is a crucial first step towards a good surgery design. With a completed design brief, your surgery designer will have a clear understanding of your intent for your new practice. They will now be able to translate the information into design concepts that address each element of the brief in a manner congruent with your vision. The designer will also accommodate any compliance requirements you may not be aware of and incorporate these into the design. Compliance requirements may be related to parking bays, infection control, disabled access, accreditation, plumbing, electrical and a range of other statutory obligations. Operational efficiency (the function in form follows function) is paramount in your treatment areas and the way you work will influence how your treatment rooms are planned. Specialist equipment must be allowed for and built in to the design of the room. Working space requirements and ready access to equipment are all factors your designer will take into account when planning your treatment rooms. Perhaps you like to take notes or need to access a computer while treating a patient - your designer can allow for this and design your treatment areas accordingly. In the next stage of the design process, your designer will create a floorplan showing the location and dimensions of all relevant equipment, doors, windows and provide you with an overview of the operational flow of the new surgery. On the floorplan, you will be able to see clearly the different

sections for patients and staff and you can see the interaction of the various spaces. Once the floorplan has been finalised, any necessary council approvals applications are submitted.

A sneak preview

Three dimensional renders of the new surgery can give you an excellent preview of what the space will look like once completed. Your designer should be able to provide you with initial renders of the design at this stage so you can get a feel for the final result before the surgery is built. Textures, colours and furniture selection are vital in creating an atmosphere to put your patients at ease, to make them feel comfortable in your environment. There is an enormous range of fabrics, styles and colour options to choose from, and the choices can be overwhelming. Durability and ease of care are also factors that influence decisions on the types and styles of your furnishings. Your designer should be abreast of the latest developments and provide options that suit your requirements and create the ambience you want for your patients. Samples of the fabrics, textures and colours will give you a chance to get a “hands on” impression. Your reception and waiting areas are often your patients first impression of your operation and it’s important to make it a good one. These areas may be where your patients spend most of their time at your practice and putting them at ease and providing a comfortable environment is vital. Your patient’s positive experience shouldn’t stop once they leave the comfort of the waiting room and enter the treatment areas and the designer should create a level of continuity between the two areas and provide a sense of flow so your patients don’t feel disorientated moving from one area to the next.

The construction phase

Once the design has been finalised, your new surgery enters the construction phase. Whether you are completing a ground up build or a renovation of an existing building, specialist project management skills are essential to effectively coordinate the required tradespeople and service providers and keep your project on track. Many medical specialists, particularly those that choose to manage their own builds or fit outs, underestimate the time involved in managing a construction project. Experienced construction project managers are highly skilled time managers and are able to drive your project through to completion while maintaining open lines of communication. It is in this phase of the development that the benefits of dealing with a single company becomes strikingly clear as the project manager is able to confer with the designer and address any issues as they arise. Once construction is complete, your surgery is ready for handover. Your surgery handover should include complete and comprehensive documentation of the building process and all equipment installations and associated documentation. Your new surgery is now open for operation, delivering your unique brand of patient care and providing you and your staff with the best possible working environment. Designing and building a new surgery is a significant undertaking. By engaging the services of specialists, it can also be immensely rewarding for you, your staff and your patients.

Onuma Dr Oseka

BSc., MJur., MBBS, FRCOG, FRANZCOG Gynaecology. Uro-Gynaecology. Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery

Dr Oseka Onuma is a gynaecologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon, specialising in helping women with their most intimate health and sexual function concerns.

Dr Onuma has been practicing in Australia since completing his specialist training in the UK in the 1990s. He has a degree in Pharmacology from the University of Leeds, completed his MBBS (Medicine) at the University of London and gained a Master of Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Law, University of Birmingham. Dr Onuma is internationally recognised for expertise in the area of female pelvic reconstructive surgery.

The Australian Centre for Female Pelvic and Vaginal Rejuvenation

• Enhancing sexual gratification • Functional and aesthetic labial surgery • Curing urinary incontinence • Restoring pelvic support • Resolving menstrual dysfunction

The taboo status of a woman’s most intimate body part is ingrained from an early age. As a result, we rarely talk about what’s bothering us ‘down there’. Dr Oseka Onuma says this silence results in many pelvic issues going undiagnosed and untreated for far too long. “Often a woman won’t seek help until a minor problem becomes a major one, and ends in public humiliation or severe pain and suffering,” he says. “I encourage women to seek help as soon as possible, even if they think the issue is minor.” Urinary incontinence is just one of many conditions Dr Onuma treats in his Adelaide clinic. He says many women do not realise even minor leakage during exercise, laughing or sneezing is not considered ‘normal’. Regardless of the severity, Dr Onuma says most pelvic and vaginal conditions can be treated or improved, restoring a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. His services also include treatment of painful conditions like interstitial cystitis, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and menstrual dysfunction, as well as functional and cosmetic procedures for the vulva and labia. Dr Onuma appreciates the intimate and sometimes embarrassing nature of these conditions and approaches each patient with care and understanding.

“It’s important to listen to patients without judgement and communicate with them in a way that lets them know you are on their side,” he says. “I have to ask very intimate questions to get to the source of the problem. I always explain this, and find that most patients, although initially hesitant to volunteer intimate information, will respond very positively to direct, well targeted questions.” Dr Onuma holds a Fellowship in Minimal Access Urogynaecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was awarded in the UK by elevation to Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He holds a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (UK and European accreditation as a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist), and is a Member of the International Urogynaecological Association and the British Society of Urogynaecology. Dr Onuma is an invited reviewer for the European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive Biology in the area of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. He was also the first doctor from Australia accepted to train in Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ in Los Angeles, USA, and now directs The Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of Adelaide. The Institute specialises in female sexual function surgery, offering a range of procedures to improve the function and appearance of the external genitalia, vagina and pelvic structures.

Pregnancy THE IMPA CT OF A ND

Childbirth O N THE VA GINA

102 NEW YOU Magazine

At a singular, very important level, the malleability of the vagina and associated pelvic floor structures is what every woman contemplating a pregnancy would wish for. This facilitates the passage of a relatively large object (the baby) through a comparatively small channel (vagina). However, pregnancy and childbirth are two of the strongest risk factors for damage to the vagina and other pelvic floor structures. Evidence suggests that this is related to an interplay of hormonal changes, mechanical disruption of the pelvic floor structures and damage to the nerve supply of the pelvic floor muscles. During pregnancy a multitude of changes takes place within the woman’s body. These generally promote the progress of the pregnancy towards a successful conclusion, the delivery of a healthy baby to a healthy mother. Within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy (first trimester) the pregnant woman will experience dramatic alterations in emotion, hormonal status, physiological parameters and anatomical modifications. Many of these developments will take place before the ‘bump’ of pregnancy is fully appreciated. In order to accommodate the growing baby, relaxation of the muscles and connective tissue of the abdomen and pelvis needs to occur. The dimensions of the bony structures of the pelvis do not change, but the ability of the individual bones to move relative to each other does. Progesterone and Relaxin are two of the main hormones involved in this process. Without an increase in their activity and concentrations, the pelvis would remain restrictive to the growth of the baby and the potential for vaginal delivery severely diminished.

Pregnancy culminates in delivery but both are distinguished as separate processes. Not every pregnancy ends in delivery. Even in those that end early, the dramatic changes in hormonal status and connective tissue function have already begun to take place and some of these changes produce effects on the pelvic floor that contribute towards the panorama of vaginal dysfunction, urinary incontinence and prolapse in later years. The mode of delivery impacts on the risk and degree of pelvic floor damage. The so-called ‘normal vaginal’ delivery occurs when the baby’s head descends through the mothers’ birth canal and is delivered through the entrance to the vagina (introitus). ‘Normal’ it may be called, but the head stretches, tears and disrupts muscle, connective tissue, ligaments and nerves as it passes through the vagina. Other types of delivery that tend to cause even more damage include instrumental deliveries, in particular the forceps and ventouse (suction cup) delivery. These instruments are used in circumstances where a normal delivery has not been achieved or where there is a perception that allowing the delivery process to continue would place the baby at risk of reduced oxygen supply. The use of these instruments, whilst facilitating delivery of the baby, increases the incidence of trauma to vaginal muscle, connective tissue and nerve. Lacerations, tears and the formation of scar tissue are events consequent to the initial trauma. There is some (variable) degree of restitution of the damage that occurs and this usually takes place within the first 3 months after delivery. Time is the other significant factor in the presentation of symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction and many women will report becoming much more symptomatic some ten or more years after the delivery of their first child. Women will often identify a particular pregnancy as the trigger to their symptoms. The damage, though, is cumulative over all pregnancies. Caesarean section delivery is protective to the vagina but may make future pregnancies more complicated and thus, the mode of delivery requires a broad and detailed discussion about the relative risk and benefits for any individual, taking into account their own circumstances. A robust case can be made for caesarean delivery in women who have previously experienced a difficult vaginal delivery, those who are already suffering from significant prolapse of the pelvic organs or urinary incontinence and those who have a known connective tissue disorder.

HAIR IS A DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC OF OUR APPEARANCE AND SPEAKS ‘VOLUMES’ ABOUT WHO WE ARE. We live in a society where image is paramount and have evolution to thank for placing an emphasis on the quality, quantity and general aesthetics of hair and how it defines our appeal. Just as a peacock uses its exquisite feathers to lure a partner, luscious locks have been posited as a key feature of reproductive potential in prehistoric times, and continue to be a symbol of attractiveness in modern day. To the caveman, thick lustrous hair signalled a woman’s health and fertility which translates today as a modern day mating call. Far from the primary function of keeping us warm/cool and protecting us from UV rays, hair today serves a secondary function of symbolising wealth, status and attractiveness. We invest in thousands of products that promise to boost, thicken, strengthen and bring our hair to life. Unfortunately, no hair care or styling can prevent over half of us from developing alopecia – the autoimmune disorder commonly known as hair loss. For men, more than 50 percent over the age of 50 experience hair loss and balding. While hair loss is

106 NEW YOU Magazine

more common for men, women are not immune from the disease with 55 percent set to experience hair thinning. The culprit behind our unwanted shedding? Hair loss is the result of genetic and hormonal factors and such is the commonness of this condition, most of us think it is a normal part of the ageing process. Balding/thinning usually starts occurring in our late 30s/ early 40s. For our ancient ancestors who had an average lifespan of 30 years, hair loss was never a problem. But fast forward several ages and we are living lengthened lives, well into our 80s. Celebrities are well aware of the importance that hair has in terms of attraction and personal allure. Shane Warne, Mel Gibson, Wayne Rooney are among the famous faces whose manes have benefited from hair transplant procedures, signalling an end to wigs, toupees and the old comb-overs. The history of hair transplants stems back to the 1800s with modern day techniques beginning to emerge in the 1930s and being successfully pioneered by the 1950s. Advanced understanding and an increase in

specialist skill sets has led to today’s cutting-edge procedures such as the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). This procedure was first successfully performed in 1989 in Australia by Dr. Ray Woods and remains the most advanced, minimally invasive hair transplant method available. FUE transplants relocate hair follicles from the back of the head to the front. The average procedure takes approximately four to eight hours to complete, depending on the number of hairs to be transplanted. With the latest improvements in surgical technique and especially with the FUE procedure, the recovery time is immediate and the pain negligible. There is no bed rest or hospitalization required after the hair transplant. The advancement of hair transplant technology is creating results so natural that even hairdressers are oblivious to treatments. With over half of us set to experience hair loss at later stages in our life, hair transplant procedures are becoming an increasingly commonplacepractice, allowing us to live more fulfilled lives, in every sense of the word.

REGROWTH

RENEWAL

DR JENNIFER MARTINICK

MBBS

For men affected by hair loss the prospect of regaining their hair often symbolises enormous personal renewal. Inevitably, for many men, this desire for a healthy head of hair prompts a search that uncovers images of celebrities and sporting stars claiming they have found the perfect hair loss solution. While these images are positive and reassuring, they can be confusing to the unwary, say experts.

Unlike the clinically proven permanent solution of surgical hair restoration where the donor hair grows naturally, non-surgical hair replacement demands ongoing visits to the salon for upkeep and reattachment of the hair piece, as well as being more expensive in the long run. For England cricketing team batting coach Graham Thorpe MBE, the prospect of regrowing his hair through transplantation, outweighed the instant gratification of a hair piece. The fit 44-year-old joins a field of celebrities and sporting stars including Wayne Rooney and Gordon Donnelly who have chosen hair transplantation.

Particularly confusing, say experts, are references to hair replacement and hair restoration procedures.

Graham says he explored a range of options over 18 months to treat his thinning crown before booking a procedure with renowned hair transplant specialist, Dr Jennifer Martinick.

While many people may think these procedures are the same, it is important to distinguish between non-medical hair replacement and surgical hair restoration.

At the end of England’s last tour of Australia in January he extended his stay by a few days and had a 2,800 graft procedure at Martinick Hair Restoration in Bondi.

Non-surgical hair replacement, which involves attaching a hair piece, wig or toupee, offers the instant enhancement of a fuller looking head of hair.

Within 24 hours he flew home to England and within just over a week, recommenced his fitness regime of three to four work out sessions per week.

108 NEW YOU Magazine

“Like a lot of men, I wanted a solution that takes care of itself and grows naturally, Graham says. “I didn’t like the idea of having to have a hair piece reattached every few months.” Graham, who could have chosen any clinic in the world to have a hair transplant, is among over 4,500 men to have benefited from the Martinick Technique ™ - a surgical technique renowned for creating a natural and denser looking head of hair. Speaking six months after the procedure, which he described as comfortable and straightforward, he says he is glad he invested in himself. Although he doesn’t expect to see the full results of the transplant for up to 12 months, his new “hair is already looking good”. “I am told that the angle the hair has been transplanted, as well as the use of groupings of follicles which have two, three or four hairs

in them, has meant I will have a natural and denser looking head of hair,” Graham says. “I work very closely with my sporting colleagues so I had to be open about the procedure. Along with the rib tickling I am getting positive feedback.” “My children, who are constantly looking at my head, are very excited to see the new hair growing in my crown area. “ Dr Martinick, the immediate past president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, says modern hair transplantation is a viable solution for men from all walks of life around the world. However, she advises of the need to thoroughly research a clinic and the hair restoration physician before committing to a transplant. This research should involve finding out about the surgical techniques a physician uses as well as the philosophy and practices of the clinic and seeing the results achieved for previous patients. “Find out if the doctor is actively involved in in your surgery”, Dr Martinick says. “At some clinics the physician is only present at the beginning and end of the surgery. Martinick Hair Restoration physicians actively take part in the whole procedure, ensuring an artistically superior outcome.”

Being a woman. It’s a common thread that connects us all. Regardless of our differences in appearance, career, religion or location – we are a sisterhood. Perhaps that’s the reason we have a tendency to compare, and sometimes even compete. But we also look to other women for influence and inspiration, and we certainly meet a lot of inspirational women in the pages of NewYou Magazine. It’s always refreshing to write, and read, about a woman who has a real passion for what she does - whether that’s helping boost patients’ confidence by erasing fine lines and wrinkles, or providing reconstructive and corrective surgery for survivors of trauma or sickness. Inspirational women can be found on the other side of the treatment chair too. There are those overcoming an illness or accident, some simply wanting a new look, and others who bravely seek to change imperfections and flaws that have caused years of physical and emotional pain. What becomes clear is any woman has the power to be an inspiration. All of us probably cross paths with more than one on any given day. But the daily grind rarely gives us opportunity to learn the stories of the people we meet. What we aim to do at NewYou is not only promote the cosmetic surgery industry, but also the people behind it – their education, motivation and inspiration. In the pages of this month’s Inspirational Women feature, we meet a few very inspirational women – both cosmetic and health industry professionals, and a patient, who have kindly shared their stories with us. Whether you are considering having a cosmetic procedure, or you work in the industry, we are confident you will find these women, and their stories, both inspirational and empowering.

DR ARGERO

WARM, CARING AND GENUINELY CONCERNED FOR HER PATIENTS. These are just a few of the glowing reviews for Dr Argero Xaftellis and her work at the ARGERA Centre. Dr Argie, as she is affectionately known by her patients, has been helping men and women improve their confidence and enhance their natural beauty for almost 20 years. Her approach is one of subtlety - using minimal intervention to preserve a natural look, significantly reducing the risk of complications and saving her patients money. “Nature has gifted us all with unique features,” Dr Argie says. “The procedures I perform act to enhance and maintain these features throughout the ageing process, a process that is unfortunately accelerated by the Australian sun.” Dr Argie is recognised as one of Australia’s most advanced injectors and has a particular interest in performing liposculpture. Believing strongly in the artistry of the procedure, she has completed personal studies in classic art – just one of many of her points of difference. Dr Argie and her staff have also undergone liposculpture and other cosmetic procedures offered by the ARGERA clinics. This has allowed Dr Argie to provide patients with genuine understanding and personal experience in addition to her extensive education and highlevel qualifications. Dr Argie started practicing medical cosmetic procedures in 1996 at the first laser clinic in Perth. She expanded her training to include non-surgical medical aesthetic treatments plus liposuction, and established the ARGERA Centre in 2006. Dr Argie was an early member of the Cosmetic Physician Association of Australasia and is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. This is the highest possible qualification in Australia specifically for cosmetic procedures and Dr Argie is one of only three doctors in WA to have attained this level. Dr Argie also holds a Lipoplasty Diploma with the ACCS and is an injector trainer for a number of cosmetic product companies. She regularly lectures on various topics at conferences both nationally and internationally and has published studies in medical journals on various topics including liposuction. Dr Argie believes the key to good health is a balance of the physical, emotional and spiritual. She spent 25 years as a fitness instructor and still enjoys regular Yoga. At a philanthropic level she regularly supports community fund raising events and has joined a charity organisation that volunteers cosmetic services to those in need.

You can meet with Dr Argie and her team at either of her two clinics – 3/17 Davidson Terrace, Joondalup, or 3/135 Royal Street, East Perth. NEW YOU Magazine 111

This has enabled Dr Argie to fully appreciate her patients’ motivations, concerns and desire for results. She genuinely cares about her patients and works closely with each individual to achieve the best possible outcome.

AFTER

Most importantly, she is involved with the client every step of the way, offering a personalised and relaxed initial consultation prior to any procedure, as well as thorough and supportive aftercare. Before undergoing any procedure, Dr Argie recommends her patients first form a goal for a realistic desirable result. Through the consultation process, she explores how the desired outcome will be achieved and any risks involved. “I want my patients to feel comfortable to call at any time with any questions regarding their treatment,” Dr Argie said.

Liposculpture, also referred to as liposuction and lipoplasty, is the only proven way to remove unwanted and stubborn fat from areas to restore proportionality. Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat that often exercise and diet alone cannot. This can make a difference to clothes fitting comfortably and can be very satisfying for those who opt to have the procedure. Liposuction can achieve results that gym work cannot as fat can often lock into areas that are resistant to exercise, such as hips and thighs on women and hips and chest on men. It can also assist with muscle definition.

CHERYL

WIFE, MOTHER AND LEGAL ASSISTANT, CHERYL IS A BRIGHT, BUBBLY AND CONFIDENT WOMAN WHO ENJOYS LIFE. Although Cheryl says she’s always maintained a level of self-confidence, adult acne with scarring did have an impact on her life for many years.

“I’ve been using the DMK milk cleanser, herbal spray and vitamin C crème to address fine lines and the overall wellbeing of my skin and can see a real difference.”

She admits she had come to live with it despite spending thousands of dollars trying to rectify the problem, until she discovered Inge Drucker and her team at Paloma MediSpa.

“I am also pleased that there’s no equipment or machinery used during my treatment – it’s all hands on using quality products together with caring and professional attention.” “My skin looks better … and I feel better.”

“It happened by accident really – there was a new shopping centre open in Glen Iris, Melbourne, and for a bit of fun I went to have a look,” says Cheryl smiling. “I came across Paloma MediSpa and was immediately taken by its aesthetic appeal. I ventured in and was so warmly, yet professionally welcomed I ended up booking an eyebrow wax.” “During my appointment the conversation turned to my skin. I was so impressed with the encouragement and advice given to me by my consultant Naomi and owner Inge, I decided to begin a new chapter in my skin care journey …. I’m so glad I did!” “For the past 10 months I’ve been having a monthly facial at Paloma MediSpa, and following a regular at-home skin care maintenance regime Naomi has given me using the DMK skin care range - which is ideal, as it’s tailored specifically for your individual needs and skin type.”

Cheryl says this positive result has added another element to her self-confidence that’s noticed by her friends, family, and also Inge herself. “Inge is very intuitive and professional. She never does anything by halves, which is evident in every aspect of Paloma MediSpa.” “The point of difference for me for me with Paloma MediSpa is that personal touch, unlike what I have experienced with other Medispas where you are treated like a number.” “So many times I’d go to a MediSpa for a treatment, yet on my return visit it was if I was starting all over on my skin journey.” “Inge and her team really care and it shows.” They deserve all due credit for the wonderful results they achieve through Paloma MediSpa.”

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN TO DESCRIBE A BEAUTIFUL, INTELLIGENT AND HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS WOMAN WHO IS A ROLE MODEL FOR ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING AND COMPETITIVE INDUSTRIES IN THE WORLD? ‘Inspired by Creativity – Driven by Passion’ may be the motto for Sharyn Yelland’s Lasertech Clinic and SY Luxury Spa – Adelaide’s Premier Day Spa, located in Adelaide’s prestigious War Memorial Drive, yet it also defines her life’s work in creating a professional platform for continued development and advancement in laser and skin rejuvenation training and facilities. Extensive experience in the aesthetic medical and beauty industry spanning more than 25 years with numerous accreditations, and outstanding results in her field have earned Sharyn a reputation as a respected and trusted aesthetic and cosmetic practitioner. Sharyn spent many years in corporate development and management of Medical clinics throughout Australia, prior to developing the Lasertech Clinic back in 1998. Sharyn says at the time it was one of the first dedicated aesthetic laser, skin and beauty clinics in South Australia. Sharyn has always been committed to continual personal training and development in this high and rapidly evolving growth industry, which is reflected in her having achieved more than 30 personal certifications in the industry. By acquiring an Australian Institute of Technology Certificate IV in training and assessment, this has made it possible for her to develop several training courses for business development and skin and laser training. Sharyn has had the pleasure of being able to devote her time to mentor many clinics in Australia, to assist their growth and professional development, and see them achieve their goals. Sharyn is so passionate about the industry and has been a catalyst for her to play a key role in the development of professional standards and conduct for the consultative processes in the medical laser and cosmetic beauty profession. Sharyn adds that it’s a privilege to be able to travel several months of the year to continually gather extensive experience and exposure to some of the world’s most prestigious clinics and MediSpas that inspire her vision for the ongoing development of her business to maintain a truly world-class facility for South Australia. One of the key objectives Sharyn sees for the industry’s future is to continually strive to increase the poor skill level of personnel available in this industry. The standards, professionalism and business understanding of many therapists is lacking in this high profile industry and requires the utmost of skill and professionalism to provide the consumer with expectations and results. Continual development of systems, documentation and processes are being introduced by Sharyn and used throughout the industry as the awareness of all employers need to hold employees responsible and accountable for the quality and best practice required in this ever evolving industry. LEANDRA THIS YEAR, I TURN 30. IT’S A BIG MILESTONE. ONE THAT HAS ME LOOKING BACK AND TAKING STOCK OF MY LIFE.

At 30 I have: written 3 books, had a baby, earned 3 university degrees, started a business, got married, won a business award, published research used by NASA, helped hundreds of women change their lives, moved countries and “cured” myself of migraines, insomnia and digestive problems. It sounds like a lot when listed off like that doesn’t it? All of this didn’t just “happen”. Like every great journey, it started with one step. 8 years ago, while studying Chiropractic, I had my wisdom teeth out. As anyone who has had major dental work will attest to, you can’t eat for weeks. When I did begin to eat my then normal diet of pasta, bread and baked goods. I became very ill. It took me almost 3 months to work out that I was wheat sensitive. This one realisation changed the course of my life. If I was wrong about something so fundamental, what else was I wrong about? With this though, I began to look into “health”. I researched and tried everything from essential oils to raw vegan food (where I only lasted a week). It dawned on me that all the health “gurus” out there, didn’t really get me. I was a young woman. I liked to go out, wear make up and heels and pretty clothes. I didn’t want to give up my cosmopolitan lifestyle to be

healthy. There had to be a balance. Fast-forward to 2010. Misfortune brought my husband and I to Darwin. After a horrific experience with our employers working as Chiropractors in Dublin, we moved back to Australia to heal. My spirit was so broken that I wanted to give up, hang up my doctor’s coat and never practice my art again. But time and the love of people around you heals most wounds and in 2011 my husband and I started our own Chiropractic Clinic that went on to win a Telstra business award in 2012. Working with people rekindled my love for health. Having my daughter Asha, spurred me on to get my message of “having your cake and eating it too” health out to other young women. With that, Cosmopolitan Hippy was born. The idea behind it is simple. Health is about balance. It is about loving yourself enough to give your body the best. It is about being kind to yourself. Health is a journey, not a destination. These days I teach women (and a few guys) how to find the balance between raging party girl and blissed out hippy all while nourishing their inner goddess. I still have a long way to go, many women still to inspire. And every day I ask myself “what if I fall?” and my own voice always comes back: “But darling, what if you fly?”

Now imagine that you have to deal with all these stressors wearing a suit of cotton wool. It would be tough right? You wouldn’t be able to hear everything properly, it would be more difficult to move and feel things on your skin. Wouldn’t that make you even more stressed? Tired? Wouldn’t it make you feel about 100 years old?

When your spine is out of alignment, it makes it hard for your brain to know what is going on in your body. I will spare you the medical mumbo-jumbo and boil it down to the fact that it is because the tension caused by tight muscles and stuck joints in your spine. This tension interrupts the messages travelling along the spinal cord from your body to your brain. Because the flow of information is stifled, your body has to work harder just to survive, using up more resources and aging you faster Some of the resources used by your body and cells for example, are antioxidants. Antioxidants are used therapeutically in everything from supplements to skin creams to help you stay young and fresh. Everyday stresses burn through your antioxidants, leaving you low on the goods.

MAKE-UP COSMETIC TATTOOING Wish you could look your best 24/7, well with innovations in the beauty industry now you can.

E

veryone knows about tattoos, most people consider getting one at some point in their life and some people get them to provide creative solutions to injuries and scars. Now the art of tattooing has been taken into the beauty industry and worked with to bring you the innovation of Permanent Make-Up. It won’t smudge when you wipe sweat off after a gym visit, or run when you cry or smear after you go swimming. Permanent Make-Up also called Cosmetic Tattooing can provide all the glamour of lip liner, eyeliner, concealer and more. There’s no need for make-up remover before bed or countless hours to be spent in front of the mirror. Cosmetic tattoos can make you look as good as you do when you do your makeup and last for a lot longer than a single day. They can make you look natural or cosmetic, however you want to look. The art of permanent tattoos provides you with a choice

to do your makeup go natural or to always have your makeup face on. If you are considering Permanent Make-Up or are just curious New You wants to help you by providing information on the procedure. You most likely want to know what exactly will be occurring to your skin. The procedure for Permanent Make-Up involves pigment being implanted into the dermis which than produces the appearance of makeup. Depending on your skin type and tone cosmetic tattoos is estimated to need refreshing in three years from implantation. As for the choices that accompany Cosmetic Tattooing the first thing to consider is where and what you want, do you want lip lining or colouring, eyebrows or eyeliner? Of course there are other purposes for Cosmetic Tattooing than a 24/7 beauty face, you can also undergo Cosmetic Tattooing for camouflaging scars or for nipple reconstruction.

Other than the area you’re having changed you also need to consider colour choices and how they may look on your skin colour and type. You may also find when you undergo consultation for Permanent Makeup that some colours available can change shade depending on the skin colour so be certain to ask if the consultant has an album you can flick through to decide on the colouring best for you. In consultation you’ll probably also be asked for what shape you want, its probably best to know ahead of time what works for you when you wear makeup just to make sure you get the best possible results. If and when you decide to get a Cosmetic Tattoo be sure its something you want and make sure you listen to the technician working on you when they tell you about care procedures for after treatment. Remember it’s your body and your choice; if you really want Permanent Make-Up don’t let others make you feel bad about your choice and rock that 24/7 glamour face with confidence.

Colonic Lavage Therapy-the Medical Terminology / also called colon hydrotherapy / colon irrigation is a procedure that through the gentle infusion of warm, purified water the bowel is stimulated to eliminate its faecal waste.

This form of cleansing is not new age, a fad or quackery, just the opposite is true, back around 1500BC records show Hippocrates used bowel cleansing to reduce fever, and even until the late 1960’s bowel cleansing was used regularly in hospitals as preparation before surgery and to help sufferers of chronic constipation and other bowel dis-eases. There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the therapy, namely, the lack of research to prove its validity, the risks and dangers, the need even to undertake such a procedure, the charlatans taking money for a therapy that doesn’t work. Conversations about bowel function is also seen as a “ yuk” and embarrassing topic and all too often taboo.

As a result 1 in 5 people suffer in silence, bowel problems dramatically impact on their quality of life and laxative dependence and addiction is common. Ultimately when laxatives no longer work despite the amount taken, the worst scenario is “ we need to remove your now redundant bowel, it’s the only solution” Surely this, if nothing else is enough reason to remain open minded and try an alternative to this life destroying surgery? There are so many skeptics, critics and boo hooers condemning the validity and benefits of Colonic Lavage Therapy. WHY? A number of valid reasons. Maybe the ones who yell the loudest have never suffered from constipation, IBS or bowel problems, they don’t know the feeling of discomfort, pain and frustration of not having a poo for 14 plus days, not be able to leave the house for fear they may not find a toilet in time. Swallowing handfuls of laxatives with no result other than severe cramping.

Unfortunately too, doctors see patients who have been injured as a result of this therapy after visiting a non medically run colonic centre where strict infection control procedures were not adhered to. How can this happen? Easily, and the general public need to realize that there are NO medical or professional qualifications and NO criteria of any kind needed to own and operate a colonic facility, and there are some 30 in NSW. There is NO apprenticeship program, NO exams to show proficiency, and training of non medical personnel to become colon therapists and perform an invasive medical procedure in my opinion is totally inadequate and often nonexistent. Sadly only 1 facility operates using the Medical Model. OURS. Shamefully too NSW Health wants little involvement in the colonic industry, regulations were written by me in 1998 when some 6 people contracted Hep C after visiting an unclean colonic facility, and yet still today NSW Health does not monitor, inspect or enforce the very loose regulations that supposedly govern this modality.

So is it any wonder there are concerns and criticisms, and I agree they are totally justified. The benefits Colonic Lavage Therapy and life style changes have huge benefits when supervised by Medical professionals, especially for the sufferers (young and not so young) of any form of chronic bowel dysfunction. When people experience long term relief from symptoms, and gradually get their life back, it’s wonderful for us to see, and a great blessing for them. So we’re not really reliant on research to prove the validity of the therapy, we see the proof daily in the positive life changes experienced by our clients. Every therapy carries its Risks and Dangers Understandably however, when people whose lives are totally disrupted / ruined by their bowel problems and they hear about a therapy that may help them, they don’t think about the consequences or the risks or dangers. And therein lies the problem.

aware that not all facilities are run safely, or that NSW Health is the watchdog. They MUST ask the right questions and ensure they have a Medically qualified person supervising treatment. The type of equipment is also important. A machine that has a viewing tube (the closed system) through which all faecal waste passes can’t be removed for cleaning, it can and does breed bad bugs and this becomes a cause for concern. The therapist SHOULD NOT control the amount of water going into and out of a bowel, this should be up to the individual having treatment,(the open system) and alleviates the risks of perforation. Rectal tubes should be sterile, disposable and pencil thin, not the diameter of a 20cent piece or larger, this eliminates damaging delicate anal tissue. Cost should also ALWAYS be secondary to SAFETY. The Risks and Dangers are not from the treatment, the high risks and dangers come as a result of incompetant, unqualified, untrained people giving treatment.

People MUST take responsibility for their own safety, they MUST become NEW YOU Magazine 127

I N S U R A NC E You wouldn’t drive a shiny new car off the showroom floor without it. And as a storm approaches, you will probably want to check your home and belongings are protected. But when it comes to our health, many of us seem to think we can do without. Perhaps it’s the thought of ‘it won’t happen to me’ - or maybe a fear of tempting fate. Whatever the case, many Australians are faced with large medical expenses because they were under insured – or had no health insurance at all. But it doesn’t need to be that way. And you might be surprised at just how many inclusions are available in the latest health insurance products on the market. Today there is more choice than ever before when it comes to the type and level of health insurance on offer. You can opt for basic hospital and ambulance cover, choose from a selection of extras like pregnancy, optical and dental, or take out a comprehensive health insurance package offering the best of both worlds. Finding the right health cover for you is easier when you know what services you need, and want, to cover. A recent survey found a growing number of Australians consider coverage for lifestyle extras like cosmetic surgery and massage to be more important and valuable than traditional insurance inclusions. For many, options such as these offer more value for money by covering services they know they will use, and even enjoy. But when it comes to health insurance, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution, and navigating your way through comparisons can

be difficult – and time consuming. Changes to private health insurance rebates and the Medicare levy surcharge are happening all the time, adding to the confusion. The Australian Government introduced the Private Health Insurance Legislation Amendment Bill in 2013 to simplify indexation of the private health insurance rebate. As a result, on April 1 of each year, a single rebate adjustment factor will be applied to all insurance products, adjusting the premium for most insurance products. If that sounds confusing, don’t worry. That’s exactly why the team at New You has been investigating the latest news in health insurance to answer all your questions in this special feature. In The Healthy Option – Health Insurance Has You Covered, we take a look at health insurance inclusions and discuss the annual premium increase. We’ve even put together a list of helpful websites to help you on your way to finding the perfect health insurance for you. Because afterall, you insure your car, your home and your contents – so why not insure your health and that of your loved ones as well. Material possessions can nearly always be replaced, but there can only ever be one you. NEW YOU Magazine 131

cosmetic services, with a view to ensuring regulations reflected the ‘well understood and agreed position’ that Medicare should not provide funding for non-therapeutic cosmetic services.

But it’s also possible to have insurance coverage for incidental extras. Much like having a cracked windscreen repaired instead of replacing your entire car, you can opt for added extras to your health insurance, like optical, dental, physio, psychology and podiatry.

She said anyone seeking coverage for such procedures should contact their insurer directly to discuss their circumstances and seek advice for their individual needs.

Non-cosmetic plastic surgery also comes as standard on most mid-level and above hospital cover, but finding coverage for elective cosmetic procedures can be difficult. Generally, only medical services listed under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) are covered by private hospital insurance. Some services which are not listed on the MBS, such as elective cosmetic surgery or laser eye surgery, are only covered by insurance to a limited extent, or not at all. A spokeswoman for the Federal Department of Health said the department was in the process of reviewing the MBS definition of

“Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the consumer to ensure that the health insurance policy product they purchase is the one that best suits their financial and health needs and that they understand what services are covered and what are excluded,” she said. The Department of Health recommends anyone considering buying or switching health insurance use the policy comparison feature of the Federal Government’s Private Health Insurance Ombudsman website www. privatehealth.gov.au. The website lists every health insurance product available from every health insurer in Australia, and allows consumers to search for and compare products.

Price Rise Anyone with private health insurance might have noticed an increase in their premiums from April 1. Private health insurance funds are generally permitted to alter the premiums of their policies once a year. Most premiums rose an average of 6.20% this year, however this amount differs depending on the insurer and the individual policy. Insurance comparison website iSelect recommends two ways people can avoid paying higher premiums each year: 1: Lock in your premium prior to the rate rise taking effect by paying in advance, and/or 2: Find a policy to better suit your needs

FIND OUT MORE If you are looking for insurance to cover a cosmetic procedure, you may wish to first discuss insurance matters with your treatment specialist or surgeon, or speak to friends or previous patients about their experiences. The internet is also a great starting point to begin your search for the perfect health insurance policy for you. Online comparison sites ask a few simple questions about your circumstances to determine the best insurance product for you.

They had conceptualised a space within an urban environment, where you could experience the ultimate in patient service and care, providing the most advanced techniques and technology to help achieve beautiful and natural smiles. This was recently achieved in August 2012 when moving to their current location on Queen Street. Art De Dente is a place where complimentary services such as radiology and dental laboratory services are provided to allow for all dental procedures to be carried out in maximum comfort and safety. The highly trained dental team has a passion to excel and demonstrate this

by attending continuing education and training seminars and courses to remain abreast of the ever-changing world of dentistry. The team takes pride in exceeding your expectations by taking the time to listen and understand your needs and desires. The care facilities include conscious sedation, twilight sedation and sleep dentistry under the supervision of a specialist anaesthetist. At Art De Dente you are in charge of the decisions for your care after a complete understanding of all your options presented to you by the dental team. You will be guided and supported every step of the way from your initial contact to the completion of your treatment. MI K E G R EER “I was always terrified of the dentist. As a child, I have vivid and horrid memories of my dentist actually tying me into the dental chair to do treatment. This caused me great distress and scarred me psychologically. It then got worse as an adult when my next experience involved the army dentist – after my experiences with that dentist, I was now scarred for life! So, as an adult, I just stopped seeing any dentist, as my belief was that ‘all dentists hurt’. Then, due to an accident, I was forced to face my fears. I had no idea where to go or who to see, as I knew it was going to be a very bad day no matter what.

My wife worked at HBA and a friend of hers recommended Art De Dente. My first visit revealed an abscess with my front teeth and extensive loss of supporting bone. I was then referred to a specialist for treatment. After that consultation I was not happy and because of the attention and care received from everyone at Art De Dente, I returned and asked them to do the job instead. The process took about 6 months and I am extremely happy with the results, plus, I have regained my confidence with the dental profession. I can see now the value in finding a good dentist who understands the fear involved.”

The ‘bone ring technique’ procedure utilized for Mr Mike Greer is a single stage procedure involving bone transplantation and implant placement at the same time. This procedure is utilized to minimize the total treatment time to 6 months. Bone Ring Graft + Implant Placement

‘Bone ring technique’ is routinely performed at Art De Dente reducing the total treatment time to 6 months. Dr Rakesh Gulia at Art De Dente trained under the expert guidance of Dr. Bernhard Giesenhagen in Vienna who has pioneered the ‘bone ring technique’, which allows bone transplantation and implantation to be performed on large three-dimensional bone defects in a single operation. This technique can be used for almost all indications, including sinus lift procedures.

Using dental implants and a new technique called “All-On-4”, we can now replace missing teeth and full dentures in one day. Am I an Ideal Candidate? Patients with missing and failing teeth as well as patients with full or partial dentures can benefit with this technology. What is “All-On-4”? An All-On-4 is a procedure to replace full conventional removable dentures with permanent fitting teeth. Using 4 implants, we permanently anchor the teeth in place so they look and feel like your original teeth. How long does the actual procedure take? It usually takes 2 to 4 hours under sedation to complete the surgery. What’s different about this procedure? This procedure is less invasive than other implant techniques. Using advanced x-ray and 3D imaging we can accurately predetermine the most suitable site. The implants are paced in the front part of the upper and lower jaws and the back implants are placed at an angle, so as to avoid where possible, anatomical structures and to maximize the stability of the bridge. Unlike conventional procedures, patients can avoid healing times of (up to) a year.

AN N E MULC AI RE Before

When will I get my teeth? In most cases you will get your teeth on the same day. However, depending on the treatment, for your comfort, it may take 1-2 days from surgery to placement of the new teeth.

Before

It must be painful? This procedure is done using anti-inflammatory medication prior to surgery. On the day we use effective pain management and long acting local-anesthetics. Most patients experience little or no discomfort and/or swelling.

The procedure illustrated above may not be suitable for all patients. The before and after pictures are indicative only and individual results may vary. Any surgical procedure carries its own risks and we advise you to seek an independent opinion. Scan the QR code & Like us on Facebook to get dental tips & exclusive offers!

How long does it take to heal? The integration of the bone and the implant can take up to 6 months. Some modifications to your diet will be recommended to insure the best possible outcome. I have several missing teeth, how can we replace those? If you only need to replace individual teeth, then we can use immediate replacement implants to fill in those gaps. Generally, each missing tooth will have its own prosthetic implant to replace the original tooth. Can this technology be used to replace a bridge? Yes. In most cases a crowned bridge can be replaced with implants
