Elon Musk

Revolutionizing automobile & Space technology! - Akshay Puntambekar

E

lon Musk! When you hear this name, many things pop-up inside your head. He is a genius billionaire philanthropist who has many achievements on his bulletin board. He is the closest thing to a real-life iron man that the world has ever seen.

If we followed the game of thrones way to announce Elon, the list of things to be mentioned would be longer than the list used for Danerys Targerion on the show. Should we give it a try? ELON MUSK, son of Errol and Maye Musk, CEO of SPACE X, CEO of TESLA INC., CEO of NEURALINK, CEO of THE BORING COMPANY. Born in Pretoria South Africa on June 28, 1971. A citizen of not one not two but three countries counting USA, CANADA and SOUTH AFRICA. Co-Founder of ZIP2, Founder of X.com which later merged into CONFINITY becoming what we know the company today as Pay-Pal. Co-Founder of OpenAI for development of ArtiďŹ cial Intelligence that is friendly in nature. His goals and visions are extraordinary. Although, even this is an understatement. He has a motive, which is much needed for the survival of human race. He has built electric cars under the banner of TESLA, Inc. so as to reduce the global warming phenomenon. He wants to setup a self-sustainable human colony on Mars, to save humanity from extinction.

APR 18 26

Let’s dig a little deeper into SPACE X and TESLA : TESLA is a revolutionary company, which was founded by ELON MUSK, IAN WRIGHT, J B STRAUBEL, MARC TRAPENNING and MARTIN EBERHARD; in the year 2003. All these engineers were determined to produce an electric vehicle, which is better than any other petroleum (gasoline) vehicle. We all know what emissions have been doing to the climate and environment of our precious mother earth. Fremont, California is where all the Tesla vehicles are manufactured. Model S (sedan), Model X (SUV), Model 3, and Roadster are some models of cars manufactured at this very facility. All these cars are futuristic with an aim to have a zero-emission in the future. Tesla doesn't only manufacture cars but also is a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries. Have you ever heard of a Powerwall? Well, Tesla managed to make a Powerwall and a solar roof which are a sustainable power generating devices, for all the appliances we use on a daily basis. All the solar operating appliances produced by Tesla come under its subsidiary company named SOLARCITY. Let’s, talk about something more technologically advanced and even more futuristic than Tesla and its automobiles. Yes, I am talking about SPACE X. This company is a space transport and aerospace company. It has managed to create some mind-blowing technology in the field of aerospace. It has had many successful space programs which have been a huge step towards the space exploration, space travel, astronomy and of course, SCIENCE as a whole. SPACE X was formed in the year 2002. It was the first privately owned company to have launched a liquidfueled rocket to the Earth’s orbit. This happened in the year 2008, and the rocket was Falcon-1. To keep the good work going, NASA awarded SPACE X 1.6 billion US dollars. Although, Falcon-1 was not done yet. In 2009, On the 5th Falcon 1 ight, SPACE X became the first privately owned company to have a satellitedelivered into the Earth’s orbit.

APR 18

29

After such success with Falcon 1, another spacecraft, ‘The DRAGON’ made history in so many ways. It became the first privately owned company spacecraft to return to earth, from a low orbit. This happened in 2010. DRAGON spacecraft became the first privately owned company spacecraft to visit the INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. The list goes on and on. Then came the technology of reusable rocket. SPACE X became the first of a kind to launch rockets into the geosynchronous orbit and return them back to earth for them to be reused again for the next flight! ELON quotes "If one can figure out how to effectively reuse rockets just like aeroplanes, the cost of access to space will be reduced by as much as a factor of a hundred. A fully reusable vehicle has never been made before. That really is the fundamental breakthrough needed to revolutionize access to space.” In March 2017 this was made possible with the Falcon-9 spacecraft. This idea and dream were finally established as a reality. From 2002, only in a mere 16 years, SPACE X has become a leading aerospace company.

The recent success of Space X is the launch and retrieval of the Falcon heavy spacecraft. This spacecraft was designed to carry the Tesla Roadster into space and leave it travelling through space. The idea behind it was to launch a vehicle in an elliptical orbit to the sun passing close to mars. In the beauty of all this, the Tesla Roadster will keep playing the song ''Starman" by David Bowie on infinite loop. We cannot ignore the sense of humour that Elon Musk has shown through this act. This launch was successfully carried out and it made the Falcon heavy the biggest and most powerful of all the rockets ever being launched. It also defeated the rocket Saturn V that NASA had launched way back in 1973. With its future plans including colonisation of mars, and making other planets accessible for human life to survive, to take one step towards immortality of the human race, SPACE X will surely have more groundbreaking and wonderful technology in the coming decade or so. A day would come where not just astronauts but common people like you and I could go on a space exploration flight and see the wonders of the universe which were earlier impossible to see.

Dining Dining Etique Etique es es 101 101

- Harshada Kumbhakarna

T

here is always a perfect way for a thing to be done. For instance, a certain number of steps need to be followed if the work such as reading a book is to be done. It sounds so simple an activity. You might be wondering what series of steps must be followed? It's just reading a book! What else will you require to read a book apart from a book and (if you need them) pair of glasses? Nope. it's not that simple. First, you have to find a place where you won't be disturbed and distracted. Somewhere peaceful and close to nature. Then, you have to find a comfortable position on a bean bag or a comfortable chair. Most importantly, you need to make sure that you don't start reading without a mug of coffee; that is an essential one. So isn't it a long series of things which you need to prepare for before starting to read a book? (No wonder I don't read a lot!) Although, you will be shocked to know about another thing that we do on a daily basis and yet most of us, I bet, might have not even have thought that this thing could have so-called “rules” to be followed.

These days, every other person claims that he/she is a foodie. So did you guys know that the simple act of having food has the longest list of rules to be followed; commonly known as "Dining Etiquettes". Let's talk about it in brief. Although before that, what do you think could the rules could be about? About 'washing hands before you start?' or 'not making sounds while having food?' or anything like that?? No!! The rules, or should I say the Dining etiquettes, start from the Table Napkin! Yes, the Napkin you see on the dining table has few rules attached to it too! I'll list you out few of them. Here it goes: 1. Place the napkin on your lap, don't tuck it or something. 2. If the napkin is big in size, use half unfolded napkin or else unfold the whole napkin. 3. Leave the napkin on the chair while leaving the table temporarily. 4. Lay the napkin at the left of the plate, when you are done with the meal. Now you wouldn't be surprised if I tell you that there are etiquettes to be followed for Handling the utensils, Table setting, when to start eating, resting utensils, Passing the food, passing the bread, passing the salt and pepper, Soup etiquettes, Setting etiquettes, Food serving etiquettes and Leaving the dining room too.

APR 18 34

HOW-TOS

Let's go through them list-wise, one by one: Utensil Handling: 1. Make the use of Utensils from the 'Outside- In' manner. First, go with the outsides, then come to insides through the change in items. 2. Hold the fork in your left hand, facing downwards. 3. Hold the knife in your right hand, an inch or two above the plate. 4. Use your fork to spear and lift the food into your mouth. 5. The spoon on the extreme right is a soupspoon. 6. The second fork from the extreme left of your plate is used for the main meal while ďŹ rst is used for salad. 7. The knife placed second on the right hand, on the side of the soup spoon is used to cut the food into pieces. Table setting: 8. Since you got to follow the 'Outside-In' rule, if a salad is served ďŹ rst, then use the fork at extreme left to your plate. 9. Glasses are at the right to your plate and the bread is to your left. 10. The blade of the knife should be facing the inner side that is towards the plate. 11. The butter-spreader is laid on the butter-andbread plate which is to be placed on the extreme left, above the forks. 12. Water-goblet is placed at the closest place to the hand. 13. Wineglass should be at right and ideally above the water glass. 14. The salt-shaker and pepper-shaker are placed to the right hand and the Saltshaker is placed on the right side of the pepper shaker.

APR 18 35

When to Start: 15. For a small table of four people, wait until the food is served to everyone. 16. At a formal table or business meal, wait until the hosts ask you to start. Resting Utensils: 17. Following the Continental style, you keep the fork and knife facing on the inner side, forming a 'V' and with the tips of fork and knife pointing to each other. 18. Following American style, rest your knife upper right, diagonally and fork following it sidewise. Passing the Food: 19. You always pass the food to the person right to you. 20. You hold the dish while the person is taking the food or you handover the dish to the person to get served on their own. Bread Passing Etiquettes: 21. If the loaf isn't cut into slices, cut one or two slices, offer it to the person sitting to your left and then forward the basket to the rightsided person. 22. Don't use your ďŹ ngers to hold the bread. Instead, use the cloth from the bread basket to cut the bread easily. Salt and Pepper Etiquettes: 23. Apart from the places of salt and pepper, they should be passed together if needed. (Please don't part them away from each other!) Soup Etiquettes: 24. Place the end of the soup spoon on your middle ďŹ nger and place the thumb on the top. 25. Dip the spoon sideways at the edge of the bowl, then skim away from soup.

Sitting Etiquettes: 26. The guest of honour, in case there is one, should sit on the best seat of the table, ideally with the back of the chair towards a wall. 27. Once the place of the guest of the honour is decided, hosts should sit to the left side of him/her. 28. Other seats should be offered to people around the table. Food Service Etiquettes: 29. Food is served by the server and he/she presents the platter or bowl on the diner's left. 30. At a more casual meal, the host should serve on the guest's plate and then pass the food dish to others. Leaving the Dining room: 31. To conclude, when the dinner is done, the hostess catches the eye of the host, lays the napkin on the table and suggests everyone go to another room for coffee or after-dinner drinks. 32. Rather than lengthy goodbye, make the departure brief but cordial. And now, here are some general rules: 33. Place the electronic gadgets off the table. Make sure your mobile is in silent mode. 34. Simply say, 'excuse me' and 'I'll be right back' while leaving for the restroom. 35. If you wanna speak more than one a word, swallow the food, put down the fork on your plate and speak before you resume to eat. 36. While getting any item away from you, ask somebody to pass it or take it if it's within your reach. Don't lean past another person sitting next to you. 37. Don't drink with a mouth full of food. Don't leave any food particles on the rim of the vessel. Learning about these formalities just for having the favourite thing on the earth, i.e. food, I would give a second thought to have it or not. But these are few things you could take care of while dining sophisticatedly with people. Have your dinner and don't forget the desserts as it's the yummiest part of the meal. Free advice - never ever skip to the desserts, no matter what! Enjoy the dinner! APR 18 36

he hands, the face, the feet, the legs; the bare breasted women prideful and liberated; the bare bodied men graceful and unadulterated. Visionary painters and sculptors of the European Renaissance Period (14th to 17th Century), brought the subjects of their art out of their clothes and presented them to the world sporting their bold divineness. This introduces a space of transparency between you and the subject of the art, unmeddled by any external impersonal phenomena. It is letting you witness the physical truths of a character, what civilization has been teaching us to hide. And there's something magical about this; to let the world face someone so absolutely free and comfortable in their own skin. Art grew in haywire directions in more modern times. It became more about what people want to see and lesser about what people need to see. But what is art without a bit of rebel? There is an entire global community of artists (you might call stupidly courageous), that still believes paintings and literature can modify thoughts and perhaps social norms. Now come to today… Imagine yourself sitting on a local train, or at any public place in India, exploring a website about erotic art or literature; now imagine you look up from the screen of your phone or laptop, and look around… What do you see? It is undeniable that you will be faced with disgusted stares and unusual reactions. This is quite “normal”; people fail to find the line between erotica and pornography in a society that is already laden with baseless stigmas, prejudices and a control-freak patriarchy. Changing this picture is exact reason artists today are looking towards Erotica. Even though they might not consciously aim for this change, any and every person involved in Erotic Art today is ultimately contributing to this one cause. Through erotica an artist enters a personal space of sheer freedom to express; where they can feel the needs, the fantasies, or put forth the pure and truthful feelings felt in intimate experiences. Yes, the theme of Erotica is Sexuality but the subject of it transcends Hedonism and manages to reach beyond. Sexuality is not only physical; it climbs all the way up through Maslow's pyramid of Hierarchy of Needs, from the bottom to the top that is SelfActualization. It not only lets you explore your outer being but

APR 18

45

through the connection you make with your partner(s) or with yourself, sexually, opens up a whole new journey into exploration of your inner self. There are endless epiphanies one may come across when they start to open up about themselves as sexually curious beings with certain wants particularly personal to them. It is the path to unravelling oneself as a personality through deep understanding of what one really wants. Sexual Orientation on the other hand is very surficial to erotica. There are painters and writers and poets who do not bind themselves to a particular theme and wander into depicting several erotic genres from heterosexual, homosexual, metrosexual, to more experimental ones like polyamory, group sex, fetishes and BDSM. Erotica does not bind its audience to what we have been shown to be “acceptable”; but it's a call to all to break through these boundaries and let ourselves grow into whichever way the streams of our desires lead us. There is one very beautiful genre of erotica and that is self-love. We very often forget to address the fact that before any 'other' comes into the picture, learning to love ourselves and be satisfied individuals is paramount. This also involves sexually addressing oneself. It is an evidential fact that controlled amount of self-love or masturbation as we all know it, is as essential for mental and physical health as being in a sexual relationship with a partner. Erotic Art, growing stronger into paintings, sculpture, literature, film and music, has now started stimulating people across the globe into appreciating, discussing and philosophizing about humans as sexual beings. But then don't confuse yourselves here; 'sexual beings' does not mean they have to have a lot of sex and act provocatively; it is about expressing your sexuality and what makes you feel beautiful; and creating an environment ideal for other sexual beings to live in harmony. I, as a poet, began writing eight years ago with the theme of 'love'. Yet nothing much has changed since I started writing erotic poems about two years back. I feel 'love' is that invisible bond that has to be present between two (or more) people consensually involved into sexual activities even if the nature of their relationships may be casual. It was an ineffable feeling I got when erotica gave my poems of 'love' vaster plains to sow its verses, and melted it down into multiple literary colors of expression. The satisfaction after having written a good poem is ethereal; and since Erotica happened to me, that feeling has never stopped.

Mr. Srinivas Dronamraju, On President & COO of VSo Technologies

Gone are the days of lots of paper work and manual record maintenance. Few years ago you had to wait in q and many other ways to do transactions. Use of Information Technology will bring IT revolution in Cooperative scenario banks cannot live on interest income, they have to cut costs, improve service quality without affecting minister Arun Jaitley focused on digitization of Cooperative banks. To discuss this we exclusively interviewed Mr. Srinivas Dronamraju, President & Chief Operating Officer, VSoft

APR 18 47

Digitization of Cooperative Banks

que to deposit or withdraw money. Now we have ATM Machines, E-wallets, Internet Banking, Mobile banking e Banks. We see all private and nationalized banks are facing cut-throat competition from NBFC’s. In current g profitability. Despite of this, cooperative banks are far from this IT revolution. During budget Finance

Technologies. Q. Can you brief us the Journey so far and the roadmap ahead of Vsoft Mr. Srinivas : VSoft has been associated with the banking industry over the past 2 decades. During this journey of 2 decades VSoft has been constantly innovating various solutions for the banks and financial institutions, contemporary not only in respect of delivering most modern products but also has been adoptive to the changing environment rapidly. This approach of Vsoft helped its customers to handle growing complexity in the transaction processing and also to scale the rapid growth of its customers needs. The way forward is to continue our pursuit of innovation and proactively design future proofed products. We also contemplate to provide a one stop solution to banks in respect of all the payment solutions as well as core banking so that customers need not interact with several vendors for delivering desperate solutions. Q. What according to you has been the greatest change in this industry since the company was founded? Mr. Srinivas : One is the scale in terms of manifold times growth in payments and the extent of digitization that has been seen in the industry. The complexity of the regulatory requirements and the huge effort in the industry to meet up with these requirement in a rapidly changing environment is the challenge.

There has also been great adoption to the technology by all the stakeholders. Thanks to the digitization and awareness created, the reach of the delivery of the solutions has grown deeper to the micro interiors and to the commoners. Q. In recent years, we have seen a drastic change in payment mechanism. After demonetization digital transactions have shown sharp increase. How do you see the future of digital transactions? Mr. Srinivas : The size and demand for simplified products to handle complex transactions has grown up significantly. Since the scale has gone up manifold times, most of the stakeholders are looking for simple products in terms of operational ease with a wider scope of coverage. From the institutions side, this is mainly to avoid interaction and integrations with large number of vendors for delivering complete solutions end to end. With specific reference to India, there is a huge adoption for all types of payments through mobile even in the rural areas. We are of the strong opinion that the way forward is going to be to provide mobility to the end customer for all his

APR 18

48

banking needs, not only financial transactions but also the ancillary services through mobile so that the mobile itself becomes a bank in terms of all the customer requirements. The number of physical branches is going to be a non specific requirement for the customers to choose where to bank with and the same will be decided more by how technology oriented the bank is. With all the above, we see that there will be humungous growth in the digital transactions of small value. There will be a serious drift of the end customer from cash to non cash. There would also be a major shift from the more expensive modes of digital transactions like use of cards to mobile and internet based transactions which are more cost effective. Q. With the increase in digitization, the banking sector is moving towards non-branch approach. Do you foresee the same for Cooperative Sector? If yes, what are the measures of improvement that are required to be taken by the sector? Mr. Srinivas : The cooperative segment of banks is the poorer cousin in terms of technology adoption and change. They do not have sufficient trained resources to adopt and use technology. IT and ITES are always investments that will become profitable when they stay on for a longer term. The banks suffer from lack of corpus for investment of huge sums in technology and maintain infrastructure. But contrary to all these issues, there has been a fast adoption of technology as there is a great opportunity to avail themselves of all these through hosted services offered by VSoft. There is also a compulsion for the cooperative segment to adopt technology as most of the commercial banks under the compulsions of the branch opening in tier V and tier VI centers are there in the immediate neighborhood and on ground zero all the banks compete for limited banking opportunity present in these locations. Q. Just like demonetization, digitization dominated Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s 201718 Budget speech. What provisions have been made in the budget in this regard in cooperative sector? Apart from this are there any rules and regulations to make digitization of cooperative sector? Are there any deadlines

APR 18 49

The main provisions of the budget has been a major uplift to the rural areas, more particularly to the cooperative sector. Like huge budgetary allocation for computerization of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) and bringing them on par with the banks in terms of adoption of technology. This not only helps the PACS in serving the growing demands of the customers but also to provide timely and accurate MIS for the policy makers to understand, sharply define and appropriately design policies to cover reliefs and remissions to the sector. The rules are the general ground rules that are laid down for the banking industry but computerization of the entire Cooperative credit structure is the premise with which the budgetary allocations under this segment were drawn. The deadlines are that all this has to be achieved over a 3 year period commencing from the fiscal 2018. However, we have not seen much progress made in this direction. If the deadlines have to be met with a ready made solution designed to deliver the objectives envisaged by the Central Govt is what is required and that is where VSoft expresses its readiness for delivery and deployment of its applications which are tailormade to suite the requirements specified. Q. How is digitization going to help the cooperative sector in risk management? Mr. Srinivas : Since most of the institutions in the bottom of the Cooperative segment depend largely on the data maintained in the manual ledgers, collation of information, compiling the same, accurate and timely submission of the information to the policy makers is always difficult. Also, an integrated approach combining various parameters is always difficult as references have to be made to various ledgers for a 360 degree view of the customer. Since the Cooperative segment has a refinancing mechanism at each of its tiers, the original collateral is always at the bottom most part of the credit pyramid whereas the same is the basis for drawing refinance at the Apex level from NABARD. Since there are no linkages between two successive tiers in terms of a straight through processing, the data at different levels does not reect the realtime position. Also, there are so many manual operations the efficiency of which largely depend upon the intelligence and capability of the person handling it. All these entail a huge risk. Digitization helps in mitigating all these risks.

Q. What makes it necessary for the cooperative banks to opt for digitization? Can you please throw some light on specific areas in which digitization is needed? Do you think digitization of cooperative sector is must for effective financial inclusion? Mr. Srinivas : Maintenance of data in different ledgers for one customer, scale of operations, posting of some of the entries in ledgers with backlogs, accurate and timely submission of data for policy making, sustaining competition among the banks in the rural areas some of them are Public Sector Banks and also the New generation private sector banks are the impediments which could be addressed only through digitization. Financial inclusion could be achieved effectively to its best only on digitization as real time data ow will be there and also a realtime MIS could be derived. It will also help the end customer in getting on to the national network of ATMs and thus a Cooperative bank operating in a micro interior with a small set up can afford mobility to their customers by digitizing their applications and get hooked on to the national networks be it the ATM, POS, UPI or Internet based transaction. Q. In which of these areas Vsoft provides solutions? Mr. Srinivas : While VSoft has complete suite of banking products in the payment space as well as the core banking side, the scope and coverage of VSoft is present in the entirety of the requirements of both commercial and cooperative segments. More particularly on the Cooperative Credit structure which is a pyramid with PACS at the bottom most part, DCCBs at the middle, Apex is on the top portion with NABARD being above the pyramid, we have a comprehensive approach towards providing Core solutions with effective linkages to each of the above tiers with the other tiers. Thus, the approach is to provide an integrated end to end solution. At every stage it has also been ensured that digital banking enablements are provided to the fullest extent so that VSoft becomes one stop shop for the entire solution suite. However, these applications work on a stand-alone mode also. Q. What makes Vsoft distinct from many big players in the market providing these services? Mr. Srinivas : Understanding the intricacies including various compliance and risk mitigation

requirements is the strength of VSoft. We have officials at senior levels who had hands-on experience of several decades in both Commercial and Cooperative segments. Thus, the applications are always designed with a thorough insight balancing carefully the operations, compliance, risk and also cost effectiveness as the number of vendors that the banks have to deal with comesdown substantially. Our approach is always modular so that we can de-construct the application and ensure that the modules required are only deployed, where as the same may not be possible for the other large applications available in the market. Being a one stop shop and offering hosted services are also an added advantages when we deal with Vsoft. Q. Has absence of a core banking facility emerged as a deficiency in the transformation of the cooperative banks towards a digital economy? What are the reasons for the lag? How these issues can be overcome by the cooperative sector? Mr. Srinivas : Absence of a comprehensive solution linking the various tiers of the Cooperative segment is the serious deficiency in the transformation of the cooperative banks in the digital era. While some of them have solutions covering few of the requirements, the entire scope is not covered by any single company so far. The reason for such gaps in the banks in the cooperative segment is mainly the awareness for the products availability, capability to evaluate such applications if the same are available in the market The quest for solutions is a continuous process for any financial institution till they land on an optimal solution. The banks will have to see successful models like the state of odisha where an entire integrated approach has been adopted by the state and all the institutions in the cooperative segment in the state are interlinked. This not only affords wider coverage of the customer operations as the entire set is treated as on one core, it would also help in consolidation of costs for operations for the entire cooperative segment in the state. Q. Security is the cause of concern in this Digital era. How does your company help in coping up with this threat to security in banks? Mr. Srinivas : We have thoroughly tested our applications on all security audits and we have already been certified by various agencies for security risks mitigations. Audit and qualitative improvements is a continuous process in VSoft

which helps us fine-tuning the applications against latest developments that are needed in terms of the risk as well as compliances. Q. Can you provide few of the names of your satisfied customers? And their success story in short? Mr. Srinivas : We have large number of satisfied customers in the Commercial banks as well as cooperative bank segments. Many MNC banks are our customers for various products. As regards Cooperative bank segment is concerned we have large number of customers on hosted model. While the references and success stories could be many, the largest success story is the Odisha model where we have developed a common data centre for the apex bank, hosted our application there, connected all the DCCBs and UCBs on to the same application and as a last mile we are connecting the large number of PACS in the state to the same so that the entire cooperative credit pyramid stands inter-connected and many of the interlinking entries are passed seamlessly through STP. The application facilities digital banking to about 5 million customers of the entire cooperative segment over there. At every level a 360 degree view has been provided to the

APR 18 51

stakeholders. That is the transformation of the cooperative segment which the govt. desires to achieve as provided in the budget for the previous year.

Vsoft has been very proactive in understanding the requirement thoroughly and developed applications capable of delivering the objectives of financial inclusion and digitization, well in advance, as this requirement was a latent need for quite sometime from now in the cooperative segment.

n a tête-à-tête with our correspondent, Miss Teen Universe, India, Shriya Torne talked about her journey, her dreams and her experiences.

Q. First of all, heartiest congratulations to you on being crowned with this prestigious crown. How does it feel to be called by the title of Miss Teen Universe, India? Shriya: It feels absolutely surreal when people address me by the title of Miss Teen Universe India. It has been my childhood dream to win the crown and I have pursued it for a long time. After all the hard work and persistence, when the dream has finally come true and now when it has come true, it feels simply amazing! This is probably the one question that I may not be able to answer very well as I feel as if I am on the 'top of the world', 'on cloud 9' and I am 'the queen of the world', all at the same time. So, I would just say that the entire experience was absolutely awesome! Q. As kids we all have fantastical dreams that could be turned into a cartoon at the most. What inspired you to dream of something as real and as unique as winning this prestigious beauty pageant? Shriya: To answer this question, I would like to share an interesting aspect of my life with you. It might not fit the idea of inspiration in the typical sense, although I believe that this is how my journey began. When I was just a child who had just started to speak rudimentary words at the most, my Dad taught me to introduce myself to other as 'Miss Universe - Shriya Torne'. It was such an age when I did not even understand the meaning of the expression. Nonetheless, I did as my dad taught me and introduced myself as Miss Universe to everyone I met.

COVER STORY

I suppose these words may have acted as affirmations and it might have rooted deep into my subconscious. Maybe that is what has driven me, motivated me and inspired me ever since. Besides, I have always been a peopleperson. What I mean is it gives me immense happiness to represent the people of our nation before the the entire world! Q. The readers would love to know about your journey to winning the title of Miss Teen Universe, India and the work that went into it. Shriya: The preparation for beauty pageants is a very long process. Although a beneficial one too as it is basically all about transforming yourself into a better version of you. I had to work on literally everything aspect of my personality, right from the way I walked and talked to what I ate and how I presented myself. Even the thought of changing completely sounded scary at first although, I must tell you that it was the most wonderful experience ever. Upgrading myself to the best version of ‘me’ was the most joyful thing I had ever done. I worked out, ate healthy and made sure that not just my body but also my mind stayed fit and healthy to tackle the significant amount of stress that naturally comes along with the disciplined lifestyle and immense responsibility of taking care of yourself. THe one practise that helped me through the whole process is to make a list of all my strengths and weaknesses. I would then work hard on turning these weaknesses too into my strengths.

Q. Who is your role model in your professional and personal life? Shriya: I have always looked up to the magniďŹ cent Priyanka Chopra - the bollywood actress, both as a model and as a person. Despite belonging to a middle-class family from India, she climbed up all the way to the top of her modelling career and won the Miss Universe pageant in the year 2000. The way that she has groomed herself is nothing short of a miracle. Her way of presenting herself has always been a major source of inspiration for me. Q. What is the difference between the life before crown and after it? Shriya: "Apart from me feeling so happy and on top of the world for that moment the life has changed a lot. I'm coming across so many people and getting confused about the real feelings and fake ones. I'm learning about recognising the fake people and the one who truly care. So there I go with another exam wearing the crown, it feels like because now I often come across more fake people. Q. What huddles came across your way when you were walking the path? Shriya: There is less time when I found anything as challenging as I feel I'm losing but then there surely was a time when I felt sick mentally and I felt like giving up at times, then, of course, my family-my mum and my dad supported me a lot. Along with them, my friend Vrinda did support me too.

Q. Which brand will you choose if you get the opportunity to be the face of any brand? Shriya: I guess the thing I love the most is 'Clothing' and I can't stand anything other than Zara. So Zara it is! Zara always! Q. What is your quick makeup strategy? Shriya: "My quick makeup involves signiďŹ cant sunscreen, a BB-cream, mascara and hint of pink on my lips. That is it. Actually, my concept of looking beautiful is not around the makeup, it is all about how you feel about yourself, that gives you inner glow and blush! But yeah, I used as my quick makeup!" Q. Which tech brand is your favourite for gadgets and gizmos? Shriya: I love Apple as a tech-brand. Q. Your top 5 favourite Apps which you use daily. Shriya: 1. Instagram 2. Snapchat 3. WhatsApp 4. Facebook 5. Pinterest

Q. Which is your favourite gadget? Shriya: The iPhone is my favourite gadget amongst all my gadgets. I wonder how the small gadget can keep you connected to all of the people in the world and keep you updated all of the time. I just go restless if I do not see my mobile for a long time. Q. What do you think, How's the fashion industry? Shriya: Yeah, I, many times get to answer this question and I wonder why people see negative side only? Like this type of thinking about the particular industry is obvious when you get to listen to some devastating news from it but I always think if you are strong enough to stick to your motive and your ethics and principles then nothing, no power can take you down. It is good enough if you are strong enough to survive with every odds, probably you might possibly be not even facing it. But, it is pretty good and glamorous. Q. Favourite place on the earth you would love to go and live for the rest of your life and why? Shriya: "I'm a wanderer! And I do not want to settle at some place. I want to keep moving to new and different places. But my favourite destination includes Santorini, Greece, Bali, Paris and NYC !!!" Q. What are you expecting from the life ahead? Shriya: It always amazes me what do those people do after they achieve what they have thought of doing and that seems an abrupt end to me. So I have decided for myself to not to have any plan. Like I'm just sure that I wanna do something in the sector of art. As it makes you express yourself better in every form you want. I have learnt an Indian Classical dance form, known as Kathak for few exams when I was young. And I feel any form of art helps make a better person of you. You get ways to express yourself better when it comes to the various forms of art. So I wanna wind my whole life around the art to make 'me' inside me alive! Q. If not Miss Teen Universe, India, then what would you have become? Shriya: As I told you, there has been never anything else than this, since I was a small kid to even know the meaning of the title. So it always has been this and this only! And of which I regret not a single moment.
