ADAPTIVE DEMER
Hello there! In our changing society, people are becoming increasingly suspicious about data collection. We asked the people on the streets of Eindhoven city centre how they feel about data collection and what type of data they are willing to share to improve Eindhoven’s public spaces. The intervention “Adaptive Demer’ is based on the type of data that the interviewees wanted to share and makes the street a place that fulfills its users needs.

HOW WOULD IT BE IF THE DEMER SHOPPING STREET COULD ADAPT TO OUR WALKING PATTERNS?
The map here shows various routes that individuals take as they walk along the shopping street. From this, we can conclude that some areas of the street are more widely used, while other areas receive lesser human traffic. Our interventions thus utilizes this information to enhance the character of Demer.
Data of walking patterns that have been collected during the day via city beacons and cameras are translated to a lighting installation that discloses data collected by the city. This installation aims to make data transparent to the public, and raises the awareness on data that is collected in a public space. The lighting installation also improves the security of the street at night, for visitors who use it to go to/from Stratumseind.
During the day, mechanical pop-up tiles adapt to changing walking patterns of the public that were recorded and the different daily conditions of the week. The tiles move up and down to create benches for visitors to rest and socialise on the street. The positions and number of benches change each day depending on crowd and events that take place on the street (e.g markets).
