I NTRODUC TION This project aims to create a connection between the Catharinaplein and Stadhuisplein at Stratum and solve the problems of both areas. From the interviews conducted at both places it turned out that both squares have their own positive aspects, but also their own problems. The Catharinaplein is seen as cosy, but sometimes also as unsafe, especially at nighttime. The Stadhuisplein on the other hand is perceived as calm, but also as impersonal and cold. With technological interventions the problems of the squares could be solved

At the Catharinaplein, there will be installed a device with camera surveillance to address the problem of unsafety. Furthermore, there will be touch screens with footage of the camera in the device as well to be transparent to the users. Another part of the device will show a map of the city and coming events. Energy will be generated with a solar panel.

At the Stadhuisplein, three lively places will be created. These points have an adjustment device with changeable lighting and music, that can be adjusted to one’s personal preference. Also, there will be colorful chairs with solar panels to create energy and a power socket to recharge people’s devices. Next to that there will be facilities to make the space more attractive to go to, the users of the public space can choose which facilities they would like to have there.

With an interactive striped lighting path that connects both squares, there is aimed to get people walk from one place to another. The intensity of the light increases when a person is walking on a stripe. The main goal of the path is to let people find the square they personally prefer to spend time.

These interventions will improve both spaces since these are solutions for the main problems of both squares. It depends on one’s personal taste which square is preferred to spend time on. Even though the squares are very close to each other, the Catharinaplein is more crowded, because it is more integrated in the city centre.
