Soldier adds flavor to your

When Clint and Sylvia Runyon both got out of the Marine Corps, they didn’t have the rest of their lives fully planned out. But they did know one thing: they wanted to strike out on their own.
Sylvia founded RP Studios, a solo photography business, and Clint created Runyon Surfboards, a custom shop. The married entrepreneurs are now their own bosses in eastern North Carolina.
the way, entrepreneurship works for the couple.
“If you’re a couple in business together, whether those industries are the same or different, you both have to be passionate about your jobs, because small businesses are a complete grind,” Clint said. “It’s serious work and not a lot of payoff sometimes.”
In that vein, his wife said communication is key.
“You really have to talk it out and be each other’s cheerleaders,” Sylvia said. “Because if you both aren’t on the same track, there’s going to be a ton of friction.”
The nature of running two small businesses in today’s economy provides plenty of friction on its own, the couple said. When asked how many hours a week each worked, they laughed.
“Who knows?” Sylvia said.
“I would rather work with a client and build a board that’s absolutely amazing than just do a big corporate punchout of a thousand of the exact same thing and sell it cheap,” he said.
His boards, partially made using upcycled and recycled materials, sell for anywhere from $775 to $2,100.
Sylvia dreams of more destination photography sessions alongside her already-existing glamour shoots, senior portraits, professional headshots and product photography. Her husband — whom she met in the Marines — hopes to someday employ others and host vocational training for students.
No matter what happens, the Runyons are a unified team.
“We’re an ear for each other,” Sylvia said.
“Which is good, because if you’re not ready to work way longer hours than you worked in the military, this [entrepreneurship] ain’t for you,” Clint said.
“It just felt right, being able to do things from home,” said Sylvia, a former combat photographer.
Clint, a former combat videographer and camera officer, agreed.
“By the time I retired, I was so beat up that I didn’t want to go back as a contractor and work for anyone else anymore,” he said.
It’s quite the lifestyle change from the intense team structure of the Marines, a branch they spent a combined 52 years in. But after a few bumps along
Clint, meanwhile, recently prepared for a festival with 12- to 14-hour days for three straight weeks — not counting the hours spent at home doing customer invoices.
Yet there have been successes, too. Since Sylvia started RP Studios in 2000, she has leveraged social media and their military circle to establish a solid name in the photography business with each new PCS, she said. And as Runyon Surfboards approaches three years in existence, Clint has significantly increased his revenue as he gains a foothold in the surf industry.
A veteran minority-owned apparel company, Triple Nikel launched in 2020 to celebrate diversity & inclusion.
We had to do something. For me, the thought was we needed representation. I thought the best way to do that was to make apparel that spoke for people who are often overlooked and create an apparel line focused on unity and community building.

During her first Christmas season with an empty bank account, Maria Reed turned a handful of pinecones, a tiny bit of glue and quality family time into one of her family’s most treasured memories.
With no extra money, and while staying at her sister’s home, the Reed family searched all over the property for pinecones to craft into handmade ornaments. Instead of extravagant gifts, they gave family and friends a present from the heart.
Fifteen years later, crafting together is a family staple. And the seasoned Army spouse and DIY diva has become the queen of making something out of nothing. When Reed left her
six-figure career in film production to marry a military man, she began to get creative with stretching the family dollar on a single salary.
So if you find holiday spirit in short supply (along with an excess of funds), Reed shares her tips for how to decorate on a dime.
“Decorating brings joy. Joy is life,” Reed said.
Here are Reed’s tips for designing and decorating on a dime.
Make it. Whip up a quick craft with these snowflakes. Grab a handful of clothes pins and some hot glue for a winter wonderland. Don’t want glue? Snag some paper bags and a pair of scissors for these super cute ornaments on the fly.
Thrift it. Not a crafter? No problem. Run to your local thrift store and grab an artificial tree (or a few). Next, buy a few 99-cent snow cans to make some flocked trees. Ready. Aim. Spray. You’ll have your home looking like a snowy retreat in no time.
Flip it. Brave the jungle of your garage to find all those moving boxes. With some inexpensive wrapping paper, a smidge of tape and a handful of rocks or bags of sand, you’ll have a showstopping set of “presents” to bring a bit of whimsey to any front lawn.
Stitch it. Well, sort of. Grab an embroidery hoop and some old uniforms. Snip a few pieces and snap the hoop in place. All done! No-sew handmade uniform ornaments are perfect for family and friends.
Style it. With a handful of ordinary household items, or even a few toss aways from your local hardware store, you can put together some pretty Pinterest-worthy pieces. Reed once made garland from a handful of bay leaves, a bag of apples, some cinnamon sticks and dried oranges – with skis from picket fence posts that a local home store discarded.
Whether snapping together some simple garland, putting up a few ornaments, or even showcasing some sprigs of greenery, a pop of color really does do wonders. And, when the cheer is running low, it doesn’t take a ton of money or fancy gifts to raise the bar.
In the long run, it’s the moments that matter and how we spend the time together.
“The magic isn’t in the making,” Reed said. “In fact, it’s in the memories.”
One might call it a date with destiny.
When Army veteran Chris Whitehurst stepped into a Whole Foods Market for the first time on a quest for healthier meal options, he met his new favorite snack — a stone fruit that inspired his successful salad dressing and sauce business.
“I was doing research, looking around and came across dates,” said Whitehurst. “I didn’t even know what a date looked like, but I bought them and started putting them on my salads because I was becoming more cautious about the ingredients in products and food I was putting into my body.”
Soon after he began “dating,” Whitehurst got the idea to boil the fruit and turn its naturally sweet syrup into a salad dressing. Experimentation led to his post-military entrepreneurial endeavor — CW Dressings — a business offering Date Balsamic Vinaigrette and Sweet Date Hot Sauce (with more products on the way) to consumers looking for flavorful dressings, sauces and marinades made with a few simple and select ingredients.
Whitehurst says customers love the taste of his creations, used on everything from salads and sandwiches to eggs and grilled meats, and he owes his success to more than fate or good luck. Inspiration came from his father, a cook in the Marines, and Whitehurst developed his own culinary skills during a 20-year-plus military career.
Whitehurst joined the Army in 2001 as a culinary specialist, working in the dining facility at Fort Riley, Kansas, for nine years before becoming a food service instructor at Fort Lee, Virginia. He managed his own dining facility during a tour in Korea and then led the dining facility at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2012. Here, he decided to work on leadership skills along with cooking.
“I always wanted to make rank fast, which I did, and I always wanted to be in charge,” Whitehurst said.
He spent several years as a drill sergeant at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he took an interest in fitness, adopted a Mediterranean diet and had his chance encounter at Whole Foods. When he returned to Fort Bragg in 2020, business and his next move after retirement from service were at the forefront of his mind.
“I always wanted to be an entrepreneur ever since I was young,” Whitehurst said. “I wanted to be able to do my own thing. I had no idea at the time what it was going to be, but I knew that owning your own business gave you a sense of freedom.”
Whitehurst brought a sample of his date dressing to a work potluck, and when more than a few people began begging him to bottle it, everything clicked. He researched how to start an LLC on YouTube, and went official with CW Dressings in September 2020.
In his first year, Whitehurst produced the product by himself at home and
made about $600 in profit, but that wasn’t enough — he said he didn’t want to stay a “mom-and-pop shop” and found a co-packer to take things to the next level. This year, he’s on track to end with a $45,000 profit; his Date Balsamic Vinaigrette was a finalist in the 2022 Our State Magazine Made in NC Awards; and the products are shipped to the U.S. Military Academy and more than 20 independently owned stores from Virginia to South Carolina.
Future plans include partnerships with Food Lion, Giant Food and Lowes Foods. Three additional (top secret) products have been tested and are ready to launch. Whitehurst said the military taught him that discipline is key to getting things done, and advises other veterans to prepare as much as possible prior to transition.
Though he remains committed to keeping his ingredient lists as small as possible, Whitehurst has big plans for his business.
“I am on a mission,” he said. “I want to be a household brand. I want a product on every aisle in the grocery store.”

The versatility of charcuterie boards has made them a popular trend for novice and experienced hosts, with a report revealing online searches up nearly 300%.
The trends report, issued by grocer Aldi, predicted popularity of unique types of boards including pickle platters and kid-friendly boards. So it makes sense, with the holidays upon us, to adapt this foodie favorite to a holiday theme. There are tips and tricks to building a charcuterie board that takes them from cheese and crackers on a plate to something truly drool worthy.
Luckily for you, I began my foodie venture with recipes and food photography for my blog. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, there is also a correct way to balance meats, cheese, salty items and sweet items.
So, how do you build a balanced board that everyone loves?
Color: Color is important. Cheese and crackers are yummy, but adding color with bright fruits like grapes and strawberries gives people something to look at. Pops of white, mainly from cheeses, are also quite pretty. Balancing this color also adds to the appeal of the board.
Flavors: I always include a variety of flavors and textures. People get something salty, tangy, sweet, crunchy, creamy, briny and more.
Cheeses: You need to have a variety of cheeses. Try to include something sharp and tangy like a sharp cheddar or a wine-crusted hard cheese. Also include creamy cheeses. This board has burrata, brie and camembert.
Meats: Charcuterie actually gets its name from salted, cured meats. Prosciutto, salami, capicola and mortadella are all fine choices.
A vessel: While people will sometimes just grab a cube of cheese or an olive and pop it in their mouth, it is also nice to put some meat and cheese on a cracker or thinly-sliced piece of bread.
Adornment: For this board, I went holiday themed. Using a cookie cutter to cut a star and Christmas tree into some cheeses was a simple alternative to a non-themed board. The addition of rosemary and red and green plant life also keep it on the holiday color scheme. Lastly, I selected colors that popped: lots of red, green and white.
So, what does it look like when you put it all together?
When I am assembling a board, I always pick a few points to build out from. I will put a large piece of cheese or cluster of berries as an anchor point.
Once I have those anchor points, I build out from there alternating different colors and food types to fill in the rest of the board.
With key ingredients filling in the majority of the board, I will continue to fill it in according to balancing color. If one side doesn’t have enough white or red, for example, I will add some slices of cheese or some fruit.
After the board is full, add some nonedible garnishes like rosemary or floral/ plant elements. Since this board is holiday themed, I went with rosemary and red berry like plant buds.
Before The Rosie Network, there was Rosie’s List, Ross said. Founder Stephanie Brown was trying to find someone to do repair work on her home while her husband, a Navy SEAL, was away. Because they lived in an isolated area, she didn’t feel safe having a stranger come in. Brown’s solution was to create a directory of military family-owned businesses.
The new Rosie’s List, which will premiere in 2023, is a multi-platform effort that verifies military credentials so shops can have a “Veteran-led” attribute on their Google business profile. And thanks to TRN’s sponsors and donors, the businesses listed will be able to offer coupons to customers at no cost to the business, Ross said. A mobile app will allow those who want to patronize military-connected shops to do so on the go. Ross called the relaunch a “big, big, big thing.”
After establishing Rosie’s List, Brown and other SEAL spouses created The Rosie Network to better support the businesses listed. One way has been the award-winning Service2CEO program, in which military-connected entrepreneurs learn everything from market assessment to legal and teambuilding necessities. Students get a mentor, become part of a vast alumni network, and can give TRN guidance on what military entrepreneurs need, such as help getting into exchanges or finding funding. Going virtual in response to COVID-19 pandemic only expanded its reach.
“We could get people from around the world,” Ross said.
Starting in spring 2023, the program will be offered in Spanish. Ross, who also serves as an English as a Second Language teacher at a community college, said she saw a need for it. A 2017 American Community Survey report found that 26% of immigrant veterans speak Spanish at home; a number that
doesn’t include military families from Puerto Rico.
Laura Torres, the Southwest Warrior chapter lead, is translating the program. Spanish is her first language, and the team wanted to make sure important details weren’t lost in translation, Ross said.
The Rosie Networks Kidpreneur Camp will return this summer to teach 13- to 17-year-olds how to be entrepreneurs – creating a brand name, researching financial terms and price-setting, and presenting a pitch deck. But it’s also fun, with lessons taught through games, and opportunities to meet other military children. The inaugural camp was two years ago, Ross said, and typically runs for three days a week for three weeks.
It’s been such a success that, this September, TRN expanded the programming to Kidpreneur Club, a monthly two-hour event. Held the second Saturday of each month, teens can get a deep dive into topics like creating a virtual vision board and goal-setting, which is on the docket for December, Ross said. They’ll use design platform Canva, and then present their creations to each other and their families.
Earlier this year, the Kidpreneur Club already attracted support by being one of five to receive the 2022 Fisher Service Award for Military Community Service. For anyone interested in learning more about future programming through The Rosie Network, visit https://therosienetwork.org/
The Rosie Network, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, is looking forward to another year of helping military-connected entrepreneurs succeed with expansions of three of its most popular programs.
Tricia Ross, TRN’s social media, marketing and community relations director, shared how these opportunities can help business owners start 2023 on the right foot.Recipients of the 2022 Fisher Service Award with Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, then-Chief of Space Operations; Kelly Facer, Senior Vice President, Military Times, a Sightline Media Group; and Dave Coker, President, Fisher House Foundation at the 2022 Fisher Service Award Ceremony earlier this year.
Army veteran Robert Blount has a goal for every product sold from his woodshop: that you can someday pass it on to your children.
“I believe in getting value for your money,” the former combat engineer said, “and I grew up in a time when the phrase ‘Made in America’ meant something. I want to make a product that you’re very proud of, something that you can give to your kids or grandkids when it’s time to pass that on.”
Blount is the founder and owner of Wa-Do’s Woodshop, LLC, a Texas-based small business selling high-quality wooden items like cutting boards and butcher blocks. His latest creation: a customizable, LED-lightstand desktop display on a hardwood base (with different color options). Blount can print whatever image or words the customer wants on the 8x10 plate, starting at $55 plus shipping.
“This would be great as a name plate for veteran organizations, companies, going-away gifts, squadrons — the possibilities are endless,” Blount said. “I can really get down and work with someone on this.”
Wa-Do’s Woodshop, named after a childhood nickname of Blount’s, is a side job born from a lifelong love of working with his hands. An Eagle Scout and self-described creative, Blount learned how to work with all sorts of mediums in the Army, including steed, wood and concrete. When he finished his eight years in the military in 2006, opening a woodshop “just seemed natural,” he said.
“I get into the zone, and all the other worries just melt away,” Blount said. “It’s very relaxing.”
The veteran service organization The Rosie Network helped the 43-year-old launch Wa-Do’s Woodshop through
its small business training. Blount would love for Wa-Do’s to someday be his sole income. In the meantime, he is launching a transportation business in 2023.
It all stems from a passion to see small businesses in the United States not only manufacture goods that are top-quality, long-lasting and beautiful, he said, but financially contribute to the everyday American citizen.
“I remember back in the day when our industries started shifting overseas, I had family who lost jobs because of it,” Blount said. “Watch the money, because you can look at where it goes. It goes and makes all these other countries richer while our own people get poorer.”
Blount said he wants to play a small part in reversing that trend. So he heads into his woodshop, located on his
property, to make butcher blocks resembling brick walls and hand-engraved cutting boards crafted from cedar, maple and walnut. He knows that his creations, with proper care, will outlast him.
“The benefits of American-made products are absolutely amazing,” he said. “Why should we be buying from anywhere else?”
