T
he holidays are a time to feel generous not only to our friends and family but to the people who provide various services for us year-round. Just how much to tip as a holiday gift can be difficult to determine. Lindsay Roberts Schey, The Gift Insider gift expert (thegiftinsider. com), is here to help. Q: Why should you gift people who provide services? A: The service providers we can’t do without — the manicurist, the hairstylist, the masseuse, postal worker, baby sitter, doorman,
Holiday Gift Guide
dog walker, housekeeper — are the people that sometimes get lost in the holiday gift-giving shuffle, even though we are so thankful for their roles in our lives. Giving a holiday gift is a thoughtful way to show it. Q When is the right time to tip? A: You don’t want to forget anyone. Do it early before Christmas. Gift suggestions: $25 to $50 or the cost of one service. Try to buy something that they wouldn’t buy themselves. I love anything personalized. Q: How about teacher gifts? A: As far as teachers, never give money. It’s all about the heartfelt thanks. A homemade gift is a touching
idea, from the parent or the child. In either situation, have the child include a hand-drawn note or picture. Gift value: $10 to $25. Q: Is cash OK? A: Cash is usually acceptable, but use your judgment. A small gift or gift certificate may be better. For the housekeeper or any trade where you know they would really appreciate some extra cash, put the equivalent of one day or service in a card and write an appreciative note. Tipping is not a requirement, said Daniel Post Senning, author of “Manners in a Digital World” and the great-great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post. “The word ‘gratuity’ is about gratitude, and just like saying ‘thank you’ makes a person feel good, tipping should be the same,” he said. “Don’t do it as an obligation. Do it so you can feel good about the interaction.”

Donate your gift PHOTOS: FREEPIK/WIKIPEDIA
By Melissa Erickson More Content Now The busy holiday season is filled with parties and gifts, feasts and friends. If you and yours are blessed and able, this season consider giving back to others instead of piling on the gifts. Your dollars can go to protecting the environment, feeding the hungry, helping veterans and stray animals, and plenty of other worthy causes. The hardest part may be deciding which organization deserves your support. You can’t base your donation simply by looking at an organization’s name, said Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. Instead, look into how an organization puts your donation dollars to work. Does a high percentage go toward charitable programs or for things like staff salaries and fundraising? Check out what grade level a charity gets from CharityWatch.org, an independent watchdog group that examines how efficiently a charity will use a donation. The following are all top-rated charities that generally spend 75 percent or more of their budgets on programs and spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support:

Share Oprah’s favorite things
The TV star’s holiday gift list gets us thinking about giving (and receiving) everything from gratitude to hammocks.
Associated Press
NEW YORK — Oprah Winfrey’s back with her longest holiday gift list ever at 102 of her favorite things. Ranging in price from free (downloads of her Super Soul Conversations podcast) to $2,000 (for a 55-inch TV that morphs into a painting), Winfrey’s annual list will be featured in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, including discount codes to plug into Amazon or the websites of the companies themselves. Winfrey’s elves, the magazine’s editor-at-large Gayle King and creative director Adam Glassman, spend much of the year scouting items for the list, with Oprah herself making the final decision on what to include for everyone — men, women, pets and kids — in apparel, tech, home goods, beauty, food and other offerings. “What Oprah always challenges us to do is to find some new brands, some indie brands, mom-and-pop kind of brands. We always have a fabulous mix of tried and true, and big people, but we also like to infiltrate new brands and also brands made in the USA,” Glassman told
The Associated Press in a recent interview. Items on the list are available at Amazon.com/Oprah. A look at a few of Oprah’s favorite things for 2017: GRATITUDE GLASS JAR: These handblown jars on a pedestal base have wooden lids and come with 365 bronze-foil adorned cards for families to log the things they truly appreciate. $45. LOUVELLE SHOWER TURBAN: Made of quick-dry fabric with a waterproof lining, these turban-style shower caps come in fun patterns and colors to make that blowout last. Oh, and there’s an adjustable knot for just the right fit. $40. EMI JAY SMOOSH SHIRTS AND PANTS: If she could, Oprah would live in these ultra-soft but slightly structured sweat pants and shirts that come in light pink, gray and black, with an adjustable tie at the loose turtleneck. Shirts, $136. Pants, $132. HONEY CAN DO HERB PRESERVER: Oprah grows a lot of her own herbs but often has the same problem as the rest of us: They quickly go yucky. Add a little water at the bottom of this glass jar, seal and keep herbs fresh for up to two weeks. $20. SMART NORA SNORE SOLUTION: Give the gift of a snore solution that doesn’t
involve mouth guards, nose strips or straps. It DOES involve a little Bluetoothenabled, egg-shaped device that sits on a nightstand and is triggered by the snore. It then gently and slowly pumps up an inflatable pillow insert tucked into a pillowcase to shift the culprit’s sleeping position and lessen the noise. $299. EMU AUSTRALIA MAYBERRY SHEEPSKIN SLIPPERS: With a sturdy lug sole, these fuzzy slides come in bright pink, blue and orange. Oprah was a bit skeptical at first, Glassman said. “She said, really? I think my, like, Aunt Estelle used to wear those.” They’re not unlike furry footwear found on runways and in the streets of New York and Paris, he noted. $60. FIVE POUNDS OF FRESH BLUEBERRIES: Wild blueberries frozen and shipped in a cardboard box within 24 hours of harvest from Josh Pond Farm in Whiting, Maine, near the northeast coast. Little secret: The farm is owned by TV exec Lorne Michaels, Glassman said. $50. KATZ’S DELI DINNER FOR FOUR: The famed New York City deli will ship matzo ball soup, pastrami, corned beef, mustard, rye bread, knishes, pickles and chocolate or cinnamon babka to your chosen people. “I grew up going to Katz’s. My parents grew up on the Lower East Side,” Glassman said. “Nobody makes pastrami better.” $125.
MODEL BAKERY ENGLISH MUFFINS: Due to Oprah’s obsession with these muffins, they’re back for a second year, Glassman said. She even travels with them and brought a batch to the set of “A Wrinkle in Time” in New Zealand for cast and crew to enjoy. The artisanal darlings from this small Napa bakery come in a set with six original and six spelt. $35. CASA DRAGONES JOVEN SIPPING TEQUILA: Oprah likes her tequila. This bottle for sipping is made by a womanowned, small-batch distillery in Mexico and is her go-to. It’s a blend of silver and extra-aged tequila. The sipping bottle is pricy at $285. Oprah’s also offering a tequila blanco at $75 for mixing into cocktails. YELLOW LEAF HAMMOCKS: Oprah once bought a house because it had a hammock hanging in the yard, Glassman said. These classic doubles are made in Thailand by artisan weavers. “When she stopped doing the daily talk show everyone was like, what are you gonna do and she goes I’m just gonna be laying in my hammock reading a book,” Glassman said. “That lasted about two days.” $199. THE ECHO SHOW: Alexa has gone video. There’s a built-in screen to show content of all kinds, even your own security cameras. Ask her to pull up photos and shopping lists. $230.
