Here are a few great gift items discovered on a recent shopping trips in the Erie region. At Trellis of Erie, 1101 Peninsula Drive, candles are a no-fail gift. In addition to smelling great, candles add warmth and a decorative touch to home décor. This White Coral Bleu et Blanc boxed candle by Seda France is not only beautifully ornate, but the tantalizing scent is reminiscent of fragrances familiar to the South of France. The glow of the candle’s flame lights up the blue glass jar, and the gold, ornate lid doubles as a decorative holder. Moving flame candles offer the ambience of a candle, without the actual flame. These battery-operated candles are flameless, made of real wax, offer a light scent and a mechanical, flamelike flicker. Moving Flame candles automatically shut off after five hours of use. Candles are available in a variety of types, scents and sizes for your price range. The Seda France candle is priced at $29.95, and the Moving Flame taper candle is $46.95. Gloves are a great way to offer a fashionable accent to a jacket. Houndstooth gloves and a matching wristlet are great accessories to spruce up your look on brisk days. The gloves cost $29.99, and the

The Nature Shop & Gallery, Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive, shows off a turtle stoneware decorative piece, by Vickie Allen Shea. It caught my eye right away, solely because of the beautiful blue glazes on the piece. But after getting a closer look, Shea explains the significance and meaning behind the turtle as a symbol of longevity and peace. This limited edition, handmade stoneware piece actually has pieces of Lake Erie Beach Glass infused into the glaze. This piece is great for a budget-conscious shopper;

Cheer: Gifts for the beer, wine lover Continued from 13T
2 beer flights If you have a friend or loved one who has yet to give craft beer a try, this is a great opportunity to get him or her acclimated. Via Groupon, Lavery Brewing Co. is offering two beer flights for $13, half the price of the cost at the brewery’s pub. It’s a great way for a newcomer to get acquainted with craft beer. At the $13 price, it’s a good gift for the beer connoisseur as well.
Beer brewing kit Home brewing continues to grow in popularity, but many remain on the fence. After all, a traditional beer-making kit makes 6 gallons, which is almost three full cases. That’s a lot of beer, especially if the home-brewed beer is not particularly tasty. However, this 1-gallon kit, available at Bierhaus International, is perfect for those who want to try out home brewing without
getting too committed. “When you do it, you’re not locked into having two or three cases or one style of beer,” Skonieczka said.
Cider kit Here’s a gift idea for someone who is already into brewing beer and is ready for the next step. Enter hard cider. Available at Beer & Pop Discount Warehouse, this kit is an ideal starting point with regard to brewing cider. Making hard cider is a relatively new concept in comparison to beer and wine, but it’s a growing one. Patrick Walsh, owner of the Harborcreekbased winery 6 Mile Cellars, which makes Old Snapper hard cider, thinks the hard cider scene could soon explode in popularity. “I think within the next five to 10 years, it’s going to be what the craft brew scene is now,” Walsh said. “I don’t think craft brews have peaked, but with hard cider, you’re just now seeing it in its infancy.” So, grab this kit and make your gift recipient a trendsetter.

Farm animals in demand for Nativity scenes
By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON Associated Press
S
ome farmers have extra reason to rejoice at Christmas: Tis the season for renting out animals for live Nativity scenes and other holiday events. Growing up in rural Burlington, Wis., one of Larry Squire’s favorite Christmas traditions was helping to set up a Nativity scene in his uncle’s barn. “We borrowed the animals from all over the neighborhood,” he recalled. So several years ago, Squire brought the tradition to Cargill United Methodist Church in his current hometown of Janesville, Wis., renting animals from
petting zoos and small farms. The church rents two pens’ worth of animals to stand next to a makeshift stable alongside volunteers dressed as Mary, Joseph, angels and the three wise men. “It’s a beautiful thing. There’s a calm and peacefulness that comes from having the animals there,” Squire said. Farm animals, reindeer and camels are in high demand between Thanksgiving and Christmas, said Megan Powell, event coordinator at Honey Hill Farm, a mobile petting zoo with locations in Berry, Ky., and Utica, Ohio. “We will do 25 to 30 events in one weekend,” Powell said. “It’s not uncommon for
us to sell out.” Renting animals for Christmas programs helps pay for their food and upkeep, she said, and has been a huge growth area for the business. “Churches love it,” Powell said. “We didn’t create the demand. We just became overwhelmed by it.” Jodi Collen, an event planner at Augsburg College in Minneapolis and president of the International Special Events Society, explains it this way: “As event professionals, it doesn’t take you long to say, ‘I’m organizing a Nativity and I can get a donkey — why wouldn’t I get a donkey?’” Honey Hill works with dozens of churches, schools
and businesses to provide sheep, donkeys and goats for live Nativity scenes, said Powell, whose mother started the business about 15 years ago with a pony that she rented for birthday parties. “It really took off, and she started adding animals.” Rentals start at $325 an hour for a group of animals, depending on which ones are requested and for how long. In most cases, Powell said, visitors are allowed to touch and pet the animals. “We do have a camel,” she said. “But we only have one — so he goes really fast.” Few petting zoos and traditional farms raise camels, and they are harder to incorporate into programs and exhibits.

Pinky the Elf TO
ERIE
adno=168083
adno=168089
COMES
Sunday, November 22, 2015 | | GoErie.com | Erie Times-News | 19T
“Well, this’ll show Santa,” Pinky mumbled as the bus pulled away. She had saved all her elf money for a ticket to Erie, hoping the trip would get her away from the frustrations at the North Pole as Christmas was drawing near. She just needed an escape.
The next day, Pinky was a hero. Her story made the front page of the Erie Times-News, and everybody in Erie was talking about her bravery. She even got a medal from Mayor Joseph Sinnott for courage and service to the community.
When the bus slowed down, rolling past the Bicentennial Tower, Pinky knew she had made it to ERIE. She’d heard what a great place it was, filled with friendly people and fun things to do. “Do you know how far it is to the Watson-Curtze Mansion & Planetarium?” she asked the bus driver, hoping it could get her mind off all the tasks she was too small to perform at the North Pole.
After getting her directions, she started walking right away, glad to be out of Santa’s workshop for once. She was admiring all the cute houses in ERIE when she suddenly saw something that caught her attention: smoke pouring from the roof of a two-story house.
That’s not all. When word got around about Pinky’s heroism, some businesses thought it would be a good idea to hire someone with that kind of character. “I could use some help picking up lug nuts,” said the manager of Johnson & Flick Tire Center. “I bet Pinky would be perfect for planting seedlings on my farm,” said the owner of Mason Farms. “And I’d love for her to keep our patients company said the administrator at UPMC Hamot.
All alone in a new place, Pinky didn’t know what to do. She saw a light on in the second-story window, noticing flames starting to emerge from the roof. She decided in an instant to scurry up the drainpipe and peek inside, seeing a young girl laying asleep in her bed. “Wake up! Wake up! There’s a fire!” Pinky shouted, pounding on the window pane with all the strength her little elf body could muster. “Call the Erie Fire Department!”
Pinky thought about it. Staying in Erie sounded so appealing, but she also knew her calling in life was to be an elf. As she bought her bus ticket back to the North Pole, she realized she’d learned an important lesson that would serve her well at Santa’s workshop: It’s the size of your heart that matters more than anything.
Pinky’s noise drew the attention of the girl’s parents, who rushed into the bedroom, shocked to see a tiny elf yelling at their window. They immediately smelled the smoke and carried their daughter down to safety, calling 9-1-1 after they had escaped the burning house.
Upon returning to the North Pole, Santa was already waiting for her. “I’ve got a job for you, Pinky,” he said, holding up a list of the good girls and boys who deserved extra toys this year. “I need you to check and double-check this list. It’s a big job, but I think you can handle it.” Now thanks to Pinky — and the lessons she learned in Erie — all the Christmas toys will arrive on schedule this year.
adno=168090
The Erie Fire Department rushed to the scene and doused the flames, glad to see the family had made it out unharmed. “That little elf saved our lives,” said the daughter, giving the tiny Pinky a great big hug. “Thank you so much!”
Pinky was sad. She slumped in her seat, thinking about the things that she couldn’t do. She was the tiniest elf, after all. All the other elves were big enough to help Santa with his big jobs — loading the sleigh with packages, using heavy power tools to make toys, or even fixing Mrs. Claus’ rocking chair.

Consider subscription gift box ideas
By KIM COOK Associated Press
S
ubscription gifts, one of the hottest retail trends, literally keep on giving: New installments arrive over the course of weeks or months. While the idea isn’t new (remember those recordof-the-month clubs?), the breadth and variety of what you can subscribe to is. Everything from Anna Sui makeup to zebra masks for kids. Freshlypressed records, juices and high-fashion togs. Mystery boxes for people and for pets. If your loved one is more into content than
stuff, consider ordering a subscription for e-books, movie passes, or classes in art, cooking or exercise. Like gift cards, subscription gifts are easy to buy, especially lastminute, at a variety of prices, but they also can be highly customized. “The idea of giving a present that will be bringing smiles for months creates a very powerful reinforcement,” he said. Liz Cadman founded a website, www.my subscriptionaddiction. com, devoted to boxes containing a mix of items each month. Many local stores will work with customers to put together
subscription-gift options. For ideas, here are some online offerings:
Home ▀ Decoterie sends a curated box of limitededition home accessories and textiles — coasters, thank-you notes and a personalized ceramic bowl were among items in this summer’s box. (www. burkedecor.com ) ▀ Set your style parameters at Linen Crate and get a monthly box of tablecloths,
placemats, towels or rugs, as well as coordinating items like platters and spa accessories. (www. linencrate.com )
Women There are all kinds of beauty, fashion and wellness subscriptions, many of which ask you to describe your personal style and makeup parameters; the companies take it from there. ▀ Birchbox, a subscription pioneer, offers monthly boxes of beauty and grooming product sample sizes and one full-size product. Toddler boredom busters for the holiday season By STATEPOINT
F
or many families, the holiday season means giving, celebrating and spending time together — but it also means chilly weather and long hours cooped up inside the house. This year, consider using the downtime to help children tap into their natural creativity. Here are some festive ways to motivate kids to engage in fun and active learning.
Family room fort
THINKSTOCK.COM
Keeping a list of activities for kids, like painting, will give you ideas to start something fun for you and your children.
If the weather outside is frightful, transform the family room or den into an opportunity for adventure. Kids can use the couch, blankets and all those boxes that seem to amass during the holidays to create a fort, which makes the perfect temporary stand-in for a treehouse or outdoor
clubhouse. Let kids get creative by decorating the outside of the boxes with snowflakes, snowmen and other seasonal shapes.
Imaginative toys Parents can ensure creativity continues long after kids unwrap their presents. Playtime is also learning time: according to Deborah Libby, early childhood reading and language expert and VTech Expert Panel member, “Play ideally begins early and continues throughout a child's life, helping them learn, think, socialize, problem solve and ultimately have fun.” One great choice for sparking imaginations and building motor skills is the Go! Go! Smart Wheels Ultimate RC Speedway from VTech. With 4.5 feet of track, which incorporates features like a

Bored: Be creative, inventive stunt ramp, elevator, track switches and more, this new set inspires interactive play all year round. Kids take charge by using a remote control to zoom the RC SmartPoint Racer around the brightly colored course, which also activates playful music and sounds to further engage little ones. Another option is VTech's Go! Go! Smart Friends Busy Sounds Discovery Home, cleverly designed to demonstrate cause and effect relationships to toddlers. Each friend comes alive when placed on one of the house’s MagicPoint
locations, through the use of talk, song, light and motion. The characters also interact with one another, teaching children how to introduce themselves and build friendships. And the Go! Go! Smart Animals Grow & Learn Farm features an electronic barn that teaches kids about colors, numbers, and plants. When toddlers roll Reggie the Rooster over each of the farm’s SmartPoint locations, they’ll hear new phrases, music and sound effects. Gadgets don’t have to mean passivity: These toys use interactive technology to occupy kids with the kind of imaginative play and
creativity that furthers development and learning, long after the holidays are over.
Arts & crafts
Making holiday decorations at home is a great way to get children involved in stimulating, hands-on activities. With just a few simple art supplies, they can craft their own greeting cards, create snowflakes that double as ornaments, or help with gingerbread houses. Such activities enhance fine motor skills and inspire kids to use their inventiveness. This holiday season, encourage kids to be creative and keep boredom at bay.

Seasonal greeting cards get an artful edge By KIM COOK Associated Press

rustic barn-board backgrounds in cards she sells at her Etsy shop, InkDropDesigns (www.etsy.com/ shop/inkdropdesigns). She began designing cards out of frustration with what she saw as a market filled with cheap and cheesy holiday cards. “Going to the mailbox should be an exciting event,” she said. “Each (year) I found myself asking the question, ‘Why can’t Christmas cards be cool?’” In a series of cards sold at Society 6’s online store, Christina Rollo, a photographer in Binghamton, N.Y., makes intimate portraits of plump little chickadees and sparrows nestling among snowy boughs and berries (www.society6.com). The Museum of Modern Art in New York has been selling holiday cards since 1954. Chay Costello, the
museum’s associate director of marketing, said the card program began as a way to foster and encourage young and emerging artists by exposing their work to a larger audience. The program’s early years included work by Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol. Costello said Indiana’s famous “Love” illustration was originally created as a holiday card. MoMA’s card art is selected through an open submission process, and the museum receives hundreds of designs annually. Popup cards have become particularly popular. “We started to see an increasing trend toward cards with special features,” Costello said. “Instead of a card with graphic artwork on its front, many artists have begun

Give gift of literacy this year
W
hen making this year’s holiday gift list, consider how you might also give back to your local community. The holiday season is the perfect time of year to do this, when volunteer and donation opportunities increase. Here are a few ideas to give back in your community:
Gift of literacy Only one-third of all students entering high school are proficient in reading, according to a National Assessment of Education Progress report. Brighten children’s smiles this holiday season while also giving them an opportunity to succeed at school and beyond.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has given new toys to children in need for more than 60 years. The organization also extends its reach through a partnership with the UPS Store through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, which provides economically disadvantaged children an opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. Donations can be made at the UPS Store locations nationwide or online at www.toysfortots.org/literacy. One hundred percent of all proceeds go to support local children and literacy programs. Your donations go even further thanks to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which is able to purchase books at a deep discount. To find a participating location near you, visit theupsstore.com.
Bake sale When you’re busy making trays of cookies for your big holiday party, consider making an extra batch or two and encouraging friends to do the same. With your combined efforts, you can host a bake sale, which can be an enjoyable way to raise money for charity. early 99 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday season, according to AAA. So how do you ensure it’s the most wonderful time of the year for guests and hosts alike? Don’t wait until the last minute to tidy up. Instead, prepare your home with these helpful tips.

Choosing one with a variety of configurations, like Moen’s Wynford faucet, will allow a new piece to blend seamlessly with existing décor. It features a high-arc design for easy hand washing, and is kind to the environment, conserving water with a reduced flow rate. Using less

It’s the first place guests see when they step inside the house. But it’s also where coats are strewed about, shoes are kicked off and winter gear is hung out to dry. Declutter with a row of hooks to hang items, and a bench to sit down and pull on boots. Donate coats you’re no longer wearing,
and temporarily store seldom-used garments in a vacuum sealed bag to make additional space for visitors’ belongings. Or, simply buy an inexpensive coat rack that can be placed near the front door so visitors have a place to hang outerwear.

Thoroughly clean your guest room, especially in areas you might not pay attention to regularly. Dust baseboards, drapes and window blinds, and don't forget the headboard and footboard.
Freshen up carpeting and rugs by sprinkling baking soda over the area. Wait 15 minutes and then vacuum. You can also make stale smells disappear with potpourri; make your own by placing holiday scents, such as cinnamon sticks or nutmeg in a bowl. Or, eliminate this step by hiring a professional cleaning crew — think of it as an early holiday gift to yourself. Ensure guests get VIP treatment with crisp linens, cozy blankets and plush mattress toppers. Make it easy for them to acclimate to the unfamiliar space by adding a night light. It’s an easy way to keep visitors from falling in the middle of night, and provides extra comfort for young ones who may not travel often. Having a plan will help make your holidays stress-free. Focus on these areas before guests arrive, so you can enjoy the season.
