A Note to Our “ Leisure Pursuits ” Participants:

Dear Gilbert, Here we go into another winter. And speaking of a new season, we will be adding a new special event, called “Gilbert's Holiday Nights of Lights”. We have decided to have only one spring event, The Global Village Festival and shift our efforts from the Spring Fair to a new month long celebration of lights at our Town Center. We will move our concert and holiday tree lighting there as well. The exhibits will light up our spirits from December 4 through January 4. Hope to see you there!

• The Town of Gilbert has the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment. Early registration is encouraged to help prevent course cancellation. If a class or program is cancelled, you will be notified and offered an alternative choice, if available. If no alternative is available, a full refund or credit will be issued.

Photos and Videos of Participants The Town of Gilbert often takes pictures of participants in our programs. Some of these photos may be used for advertising in our brochure publications and or other types of advertising. By registering you are granting permission to the Town of Gilbert to utilize these photos/ videos as marketing and promotional material.

Scholarships A scholarship program is available to help economically disadvantaged children. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship for your child(ren), please call the Gilbert CAP office at (480) 892-5331. They are located at 1140 N. Gilbert Rd. Ste. 109, Gilbert, AZ 85234. Youth Fishing Day / Youth Sports

Gilbert's Youth Fishing Day Take a child fishing! This is a great opportunity to spend the morning fishing with family or to bring a young angler that would enjoy the experience! Participants do not need to have a valid urban fishing license during the time of the event! Just check-in that morning with volunteers before fishing. When: Sat., Oct., 11, 2008 from 8am to 12pm Where: Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, located at the southeast corner of Greenfield and Guadalupe. This community event is free of charge, so please come and join us for a great morning of fishing. The Arizona Game and Fish Department will provide fishing gear and bait to the first 100 participants who do not have equipment of their own. Youth Spring Ball Program

Gilbert Community Services offers a youth ball program to all boys and girls who are interested in playing the game of t-ball/ softball/baseball for the fun of the sport. This is an instructional recreation program that emphasizes fun, skill development, and team unity. There are no tryouts, allstar teams, or post-season tournaments. All participants play an equal amount of time and receive a participation award at the end of the season. Program information will be available in the Spring Leisure Pursuits brochure mailed to all Gilbert residents the first week of January, 2009. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5-15.

Holiday Wrestling Camp Wrestling camp for beginners & experienced wrestlers 5 yrs.-8th grade. Sponsored by Gilbert Community Services and conducted by Highland High School Varsity Wrestling Coach, Abel Figueroa. Format Three days of instruction. Fourth day is match day. We will be holding an umpires clinic in March and will provide all the necessary training. LEAGUE DATES The Holiday 2008 Tennis Leagues are scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 19 and continue through mid December. League play lasts approximately eight weeks which includes a round robin schedule and playoffs for first and second place if necessary. Lifeguard Training This American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course will train students in all aspects of Lifeguarding. Students who successfully complete the class, and pass both the swimming and written tests, will receive a Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR certificate. Free Ranger Led Walks: Join our ranger on an interpretive tour of the preserve. Every Monday, October-April, 8:30am; $3 suggested donation. Special Events Enchanted Desert: Enjoy an evening walk at the Riparian Preserve that combines Native American music, dance, and storytelling to help create a feeling of spiritual connection between people and our cherished Arizona land. Featuring world-renowned Apache artists, Yellowbird Indian Dancers. November 15, 6:30-8:30pm; $6 adult, $3 child Luminaria on the Lake: Come see the Riparian Preserve glowing with festive holiday spirit! Over 2000 luminarias extend over the trails, reflected in the quiet waters. School choirs, strolling musicians, and Santa all help to kick off the winter holidays with this free, community event. December 6, 6:30-8:30pm

Volunteers Volunteer Meetings: Come and learn more about the Riparian Institute's work and find out how you can get involved. Every first Tuesday, 6:45-8pm at the Public Works Facility on Juniper Road across from Freestone Park. Volunteer Desert Gardening: Meet with our plant biologist, Jennie Rambo, every Saturday morning to work in the Preserve’s themed gardens. Check website for time.

For the beginning player. This is your opportunity to learn the basics that will enable you to build foundation skills to enjoy America's fastest growing sport. Class topics will include grip, stance, and alignment, complete swing, putting and chipping. Instructor to student ratio is 1:6. This course includes instructions, written materials, range balls. Sticks for Kids Program The Sticks for Kids Program is a program that provides children with a set of golf clubs while learning to play the game of golf. The program will provide an opportunity for youth to experience a sport that teaches etiquette, discipline, integrity, and honor, as well as a competitive course play. So whether you are interested in participating in one of our youth Golf Lessons at Western Skies or Kokopelli or you would like to just borrow some clubs to try out the game, the clubs are here for you. The clubs are available for FREE rental at the Town of Gilbert’s Community Services Office at 90 E. Civic Center Drive. A security deposit of $100 will be required when reserving the clubs, and will be refunded once the clubs have been returned to the office. Trail Rides SUPERSTITION TWO HOUR TRAIL RIDE This exciting 2 hour ride with OK Corral will take you out on beautiful trails at the base of the Superstition Mountains. Our goal is to teach the basics of figure skating and hockey in accordance with the standards of the USFS Basic Skills Program. We create a learning environment that motivates skaters to learn in a semi-aggressive class setting that promotes proper skating techniques. Our main goal is for every skater to correctly learn each skill introduced in their level before they move on to the next. We encourage skaters to move through the program at a rate that allows them to truly master each skill. Important Things to Know • At the beginning of each semester, every student gets a name badge. This badge must be worn to class each week. • Each class holds a minimum of 5 students and maximum of 15. Consecutive levels may be combined if less than 5 students are registered. • Recommended attire for every student would be loose fitted clothes such as sweat pants and a light jacket. Gloves or mittens are a must. • Thin socks are much better than thick socks. It’s best to have to skate fit to the foot and not to the sock. • Arrive a few minutes early 1st Day of Class to get your name tag!

Basic 1-3 The Basic Skills are the fundamentals of the sport. These three levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 3 levels, skaters will have basic knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of freestyle jumps and spins. 7+ YEARS 49795 TH 1/8 4:30-5pm $60 Learn to Play Hockey Hockey Tot – Skaters ages 3-6 will learn basic hockey skating techniques. Time: 8-8:30am Check In and Warm-UP 8:30-8:45am Review Rules, Regulations, and Boundaries. 8:45-1pm Tournament Age: All team members must be at least 16 years of age or older. Participants 16 and 17 years of age need a signed waiver from a parent or guardian submitted to the Recreation Center prior to tournament. Waivers can be obtained at the Freestone Recreation Center’s front desk. Proper identification will need to be provided on tournament day. Team Fee: $100 per team Registration: All roster and tournament rule information can be picked up at the Freestone Recreation Center (1141 E Guadalupe Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85234) or at the Gilbert Community Services office (90 E. Civic Center Dr, Gilbert, AZ 85296). All teams must drop off a completed roster at the Freestone Recreation Center Only and will be accepted until Wednesday, October 15 or until tournament is filled. We will be taking a maximum of 16 teams.

GUIDELINES • Resident Touch-Tone and On-line registration for PRESCHOOL classes begins 8am on Oct. 7. • There will be no classes on 11/27-11/29 in observance of Thanksgiving, 12/22/08-1/3/09 for the Winter Break and 1/19/09 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. • Information on how to register for classes is on page 4. • Classes are popular, please register early. • For your child’s safety, children must be accompanied into the facility as well as to and from the classroom. • Participants should dress appropriately according to the type of class they are registered for. Tights/ leotards and or loose clothing is recommended for dance/movement classes. Closed-toe shoes are a must for all classes. • Parents of children wearing diapers or pull-ups must remain in the facility during their child’s class. • Only registered participants may remain in the classroom once class has started. Parents, family members and friends are asked to wait outside the classroom quietly while class is in session. During the sessions, children will learn about art through textures, sounds, music and smells. They will play games, hear stories, and have fun while making creative masterpieces inspired by contemporary and master artists. Abrakadoodle uses safe, nontoxic, washable Crayola® products in our classes. Our specialty curriculum has been developed in collaboration with developmental experts. ROCKIN’ R RANCH Get a taste of the Wild West at the Rockin’ R Ranch! Relive Arizona’s history with real cowboys and cowgirls, pan for gold, try the old water pump, and learn to rope a steer! The trip also covers the basic needs animals and humans share and will help increase students’ respect for all animals.
