What is a learning object

Page 1

Learning Object EXPLORATIONS The comic strip you just read was a learning object created using ComicLife (a software that is installed on your computer), and hopefully you know now that learning objects are resources teachers create for their students that can be used over and over again. Teachers create learning objects for many reasons:    

Provide students with more engaging materials Provide additional resources where few resources exist Provide differentiated resources for different sets of students Address learning needs/interests of students/individualize instruction for students  Provide exemplars of project-based activities You will be exploring a set of learning objects in this activity and the tools used to create learning objects for students. (But, of course, these tools can also be used by students during project-based lessons!!) Remember to backchannel what you are learning because you will become the expert on the learning object and the pros/cons of using the tools to create them. You will be asked to share your expertise with your Team of Four. The goal of today’s activity is to share with you just 16 of the 1000s of Web 2 tools that can be used by teachers to create learning objects for their students (AND that students can use to create representations of the knowledge they have learned!)

TIP! There is more here than you can explore in 5 minutes, SO monitor your time – spend no more than 5 minutes per exploration – if you finish early, you can always return to the explorations and explore more!
