In our everyday lives, we can see how complex life can be and how we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath sometimes. Topical Herbal Medicine Making Herbal Oils and Gels are delightful balms for soothing skin irritation, wounds, dry skin, inflammation and a myriad of other challenges. Botanical infused oils and gels act to extract and preserve the medicinal properties of herbs, providing a convenient and pleasurable form of topical application. In this hands-on class, students will craft two herbal preparations, and will discuss various plants and their medicinal attributes. The class will be shown how to make an herbal infused medicinal oil, which can then be crafted into numerous herbal products. This session will transform a medicinal oil into a natural, soothing, and luscious face and hand cream. All participants will go home with half an ounce of herbal infused oil, and 1 oz of face and hand cream. Many medicinal herbs are tasty and can be prepared as food rather than what many typically think of as medicine. The herbs this class will cover are GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) and have been utilized traditionally as food plants or culinary herbs for centuries. This is a hands-on educational experience. Students will learn how to craft herbal medicinal foods + beverages and will discuss various plants and their medicinal properties. This group will craft a nutritive healing herbal honey with wild and/or organically grown herbs and foods, then move on to herbal elixirs, tinctures, and oxymels. Participants will go home with a jar of herbal honey and 1 oz of one of the herbal medicines. Exposure

This class focuses on the use of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to control the amount of light reaching the digital image sensor to achieve the desired results of the subject you are photographing.You will learn to use the exposure triangle and know how it affects the three fundamental properties of a digital camera (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). Participants will learn how each of the three properties are interconnected, and how to increase one property while decreasing the others to meet both exposure and artistic needs. In addition to class time, a field trip photo shoot will be included to practice concepts learned in this class. This class will give students an introduction to macro photography, including the equipment and techniques involved. Other topics will include cameras, lenses, and other gear, plus focusing & depth-offield, as well as lighting and various hands-on activities.

If you are new to DSLR cameras, or want to learn more about your camera, this is the class for you. Bring your camera, tripod and camera manuals. The course will cover: Camera modes, image quality settings, shutter releases, focusing modes, area of the frame, flash modes, white balance, metering modes, the exposure triangle and histograms. Dogless Dog Training Are you considering adding a dog to your life and are not sure what breed or mix might be a good fit for you? Do you have an unruly dog that is not able to attend classes in the traditional way? Do you find it distracting to learn new things while juggling a boisterous puppy? Are you interested in learning lots of cool ways to train dogs? Join us while we learn about how dogs learn, what motivates them and add a bunch of tools to your dog training tool box. We will discuss, demonstrate and also offer optional handson instruction for the basics such as house training, manners, walking on a loose leash, eye contact, as well as basic commands such as “sit,” “down,” “come” and the oh-so popular “stay.” The class will even teach you the miraculous ‘potty on command’ technique! We will use gentle but highly effective techniques to help you help your dog or puppy to be the very best canine citizen they can be. Meanwhile we will actually teach you how to teach your dog. Writing Poetry Poetry is beautiful, ugly, happy, sad, profound, clever, serious, sarcastic, personal, impersonal, sacred, profane, gentle, harsh, sincere and whimsical. It is a powerful form of self-expression and self-discovery, but it is much more; it is a tool for exploring new ideas and new perceptions about people and the world we live in. It helps us communicate concepts that are difficult to express any other way. We will examine some very special tools poets use and how you can use them in our own writing.You will enjoy non-threatening analyses and suggestions from the instructor and from your fellow students. Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Join Lauralee Norris, a graduate of Oregon Coast Community College, for a seminar on the steps our community can take to prevent human trafficking. In this seminar, Lauralee will cover the signs of grooming, the environment that human trafficking thrives in, the signs to look for, and how to report suspected human trafficking. For her senior project, Lauralee designed a four-stage campaign against human trafficking called the Blue Butterfly Project. Lauralee will talk about the successes of her project, and how our community can continue to fight against human trafficking moving forward. Estate Planning Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Each class will focus on the four seasons with class discussion, journaling prompts and soul enriching homeplay. Love Lives Forever This class addresses, in a low-key, understandable and accepting manner, the concept that Love Never Dies and that connecting with deceased loved ones is possible. “The class is suitable for anyone who is open to the possibility of life after death or anyone who may have experienced unexplained events after the death of a loved one but is unsure if they have received actual messages,” said instructor Violet Young. “Love Lives Forever assists participants in becoming more aware of the possibility of messages from beyond the veil. In my experience, many people have experienced messages and visitations but are often self-conscious or afraid to believe it. I present my own experiences since my husband crossed over on April 6, 2015, as well as personal experiences with other family members. The class is a forum for people to share their own experiences and thoughts about the possibility that they have received messages from their loved ones and to explore their feelings about the experiences. Love Lives Forever is spiritually based, however it is not religious. Student-run newspaper to take center stage

Register for J103! Journalism 103: Introduction to Media Writing Students will learn to write, edit, photograph for and design their own newspaper as well as write and produce their very own radio show. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with Stagecoach staff to get their work published and will have the opportunity to have their radio show aired on community radio 91.7FM, KYAQ. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to write hard news, features, sports, opinion, or profiles, now is your chance!

OCCC is excited to announce the first publication of the first student-produced newspaper, The Coastal Stagecoach, this school year. The by-students, for-students Stagecoach is an independent publication and will feature some of the best writing the school has to offer. Paper sections will be school news such as independent accreditation, arts and entertainment covering the local music and art scenes as well as movies and video games, outdoor life for fishers and surfers and marine science news about the aquarium science program and OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. We will also have a mental health awareness and advice section to get you through the school week! There are many opportunities for students at The Stagecoach. Be a Broker! Have you tried studying online, independently (and alone) for your Real Estate Broker’s License test? All too often, independent online study grinds on for months and months longer than you planned. This class is designed to keep you and your classmates on track, week in and week out, as you work as a group and independently towards preparing to successfully take your Real Estate Broker License test. Start in January, and take your test before Spring Break! There are definitely cheaper online independent study programs available. Surf up some better performance with WaveApps Have you been doing your books by hand, on a spreadsheet or not at all? Is QuickBooks too expensive or too complicated for your small business? WaveApps is a free online cloud-based solution for small business owners. This class will cover WaveApps services such as generating the reports needed for loans, taxes, and business performance evaluation. WaveApps works with your checking account with direct downloads from most banks. WaveApps offers two mobile apps that work from mobile devices, allowing you to process receipts on the road, invoice on the job site, and take credit cards for a fee of 2.9%, plus 30 cents. How it works:

After each lesson, an exam will be given on the topics presented. The exam is timed and is not an open-book test. The passage percentage for each exam is 70% or above. If you do not pass all the exams, you will need to retake the ones you missed. There is a $50 fee for each time you need to retake an exam. The course is offered by the OCCC Small Business Development Center (SBDC), in partnership with the Clackamas Community College SBDC.
