Ready for a certifiably fun job? Jump in to the wet, wonderful world of lifeguarding. This spring, OCCC is partnering with the Toledo Pool (represented at right by Paul, left, and Brett) and Lincoln City Parks & Recreation to help connect you with the perfect spring & summer job, wherever you live in Lincoln County. Check oregoncoastcc.org/communityed for dates and times of these FREE lifeguard training courses. Either course will certify you for employment as a lifeguard. (Don’t go off the deep end – completion of the certification course doesn’t guarantee you a lifeguard position; it’s simply a key requirement necessary to apply.) Estate Planning: Wills and Trusts
Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. Introduction to Improv
Have you ever been tongue-tied on a date or during a job interview? Have you ever wanted to be better at thinking on your feet? In this class, you will learn basic improvisational skills that you can apply to acting as well as life situations. How to Use Your Digital Camera: The Basics
Learn about the use of the mode dial, and your camera’s different menus. Learn the meaning of the camera icons and how to use them properly to take different types of photos. Learn how to transfer photographs to a computer. Learn basic photographic composition and the types of creative uses of a digital camera for taking portraits, landscapes, wildlife photography, documentation of current events and much more. Using Your Digital Camera: Beyond the Basics
This class is for those who wish to learn more about their Digital Single Lens Reflex, (DSLR) interchangeable lens camera. In this class, features such as program, aperture, priority, shutter priority, and manual modes will be explored. The class will also cover f/stop, exposure, shutter speed, white balance, and bracketing. This class will teach organization of photographs after a photo shoot. This class includes hands-on camera work through a field trip/ photo shoot to practice all the topics covered in class. Students will provide their own transportation and meet at the shoot location. Mythology: Destruction Stories
One poet asked whether the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Another suggested perhaps it would be by fire or ice. Who knows? We will become familiar with destruction myths from several different cultures examining a variety of accounts presenting the demise of the world as we know it. On a more personal and individual level, what happens after we die? Some surprising answers to that age-old query lie in vivid accounts of the afterlife featured in other ancient classical stories. We will read and discuss those myths, but field trips to the various depicted destinations will have to be in imagination only. All materials will be supplied by instructor for any participants not wishing to purchase a used text (Mythology: Contemporary Approaches to Classical and World Myths, by Thury and Devinney, any edition) from an online vendor, usually for less than $10, a great bargain. Beginners Fly Casting & Fly Tying Break through the barriers of fear and myth with this hands-on, basic approach to a pastime both rewarding and addictive. Learn how to assemble feathers and furs on hooks to fool and catch fish. Solve the riddle of when, where, and how to use which fly patterns. Get expert help choosing your own gear. Dogless Dog Training
Are you considering adding a dog to your life and are not sure what breed or mix might be a good fit for you? Do you have an unruly dog that is not able to attend classes in the traditional way? Do you find it distracting to learn new things while juggling a boisterous puppy? Are you interested in learning lots of cool ways to train dogs? Join us while we learn about how dogs learn, what motivates them and add a bunch of tools to your dog training tool box. Play the Pennywhistle
Have you ever met someone so happy they danced a jig? You can help, by learning to play this iconic Celtic instrument – the simple, versatile and exceptionally portable (perfect for beach bonfires!) penny whistle. From the Chieftains, to The Clancy Brothers, to the Dropkick Murphys, the penny whistle (or “tin whistle”) has helped define Celtic music and has been integral to many other genres as well. This class will introduce you to basic playing techniques and some fun tunes to start you out. And, the cost includes your very own penny whistle. This class is designed to get a sense of Japanese culture and perspectives in daily life. Examples are shown by slides, demonstration and hands-on activities. Sleep Wellness
This class explains the most common types of sleep disorders, identifies their causes, and explores various types of effective clinical and alternative treatments. The main focus of this class will be to discuss the origins of these conditions. Most sleep disorders are the result of lifestyle choices. You will learn the most effective way to improve sleep health is to examine the lifestyle choices that lead to the development of the sleep disorder(s) in the first place. The Whole-Food, Plant-Based (WFPB) Lifestyle
Writing Poetry
We will examine the many choices poets make--such as what to write about, how to begin, whether a poem should be personal or impersonal, formal or informal, broad or narrow in scope, should it rhyme? what about meter? --and how these decisions relate to the structure of the poem. We will also look at how david starr best to use the basic tools of poetry, such as the poetic line, stanza and rhythm. Purpose of the class: encouraging people to realize and expand their creative potential, whether they have been writing poetry for years or have just recently decided to try it out. Course Methodology: participants will write and submit one poem each week. I will suggest some subjects and structures, but each person will have the right to select their own. Some of the poems we write will be distributed to the other participants for discussion during class in the following week; the group will work with the writer to identify what works and will suggest ways in which the poem might be improved. Diseases which plague our populations like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are quite often food-borne illnesses that are directly correlated with our Western diet of rich animalbased and/or processed foods. These foods are virtually absent in a WFPB diet which emphasizes whole (living) plant-foods. A multitude of empirical studies have indicated that a diet of whole plant foods has the potential to not only prevent, but reverse and/or improve many common disease processes. The WFPB (vegan) diet has been dubbed the healthiest of all dietary plans by various centers of academia. In addition, the animal agriculture and processed food industries are among the most environmentally destructive industries from every sector: land use, water pollution, soil degradation, air pollution, deforestation, oceanic deletion/die-offs, and oxygen depletion. Our inevitable population growth and economic development means that our planet can no longer sustain these intensive/destructive industries. Mosaics: Farmers Market
MOSAIC TILES BY JOANNE DASCHEL AND ONE OF HER STUDENTS
Inspired by the opening of the season, we’ll explore the colors and textures of the farmers’ market just outside the doors of our studio to create a wall hanging (8x10) mosaic. We’ll start with a brief visit to the market to gather sketches or photos for inspiration, then head indoors to work with brilliant stained glass on a solid substrate to capture your market memory in mosaic form. Learn basic glass cutting with a wheeled nipper, and some design fundamentals specific to this medium. All materials and tools provided. Grouting completed by instructor after class. Pick up completed mosaic by the following Sunday, June 9, or arrange for alternate pickup day or mailing ($7 extra paid to instructor). Spring Flowers Mosaic Suncatcher Using a 8” circular substrate, you will make a glasson-glass mosaic suncatcher with translucent stained glass. Bring a photo of your favorite flower or use one of the instructor’s flower templates. The class will build leaf and flower structures with mosaic shapes made with various cutting tools. Learn some fundamental cutting and layout skills in this class, and either leave your piece for grouting with instructor or take-home grout to do it yourself, after a brief demo in class. Just Kiln Some Time: Vitreous Enameling

ENAMELED JEWELRY BY DEB CONRAD
No, Vitreous Enameling isn’t the name of a Greek shipping magnate. Instead, it’s a wonderful new course never before offered in OCCC’s community education lineup! Enameling is the ancient art of combining the variables of glass, metal, and heat to create long-lasting beautiful works of art. In this three-hour workshop, you will learn about the history and practice of enameling, and then turn theory into practice as you plan, prepare, and kiln-fire at least two colorful pairs of enameled earrings. All supplies will be provided, and you will be able to wear your creations home. Please wear cotton or other natural fibers and closed-toed shoes. $30 materials fee includes your choice of two pairs of copper shapes with ear wires and all safety equipment, plus use of a variety of transparent and opaque enamel powders and all tools. Mussel Harvesting
Oil Painting Using the Wet-on-Wet Method
Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet on wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently don’t have any drawing capabilities. Learn how to collect mussels from the local tide pools. Participants will learn how to practice careful environmental stewardship and safety while harvesting. Learn how to read the tides, and the surf conditions, before heading out to harvest. And, try some fresh mussels, prepared right there on the beach! Participants must have a valid Oregon Shellfish License. Note: Class subject to cancelation with short notice, depending on ocean swell/surf conditions. Open Weave Tule Basket
Learn about western Oregon Tribal history, importance of Tule for Native American people, Tule plant identification, proper gathering and processing methods along with learning traditional Native American weaving techniques to create a Tule basket. Taught by Stephanie Craig, a member of the Grand Ronde tribe and cultural erhnobotanist, specialist in Northwest Native American basketry, students will gain insights and skills in how to traditionally process local materials and learn different local tribal weaving techniques and practices. Birding Basics
Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptions, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. Family History Research for Beginners
Presented by Lincoln County Genealogical Society (LCGS) Who are you? What makes you… well, you? We all know that we carry DNA from our ancestors, but even more than that, we carry our ancestors’ cultures, beliefs, values and stories forward into the future. What’s your family’s story? Quite often, we don’t know much, if anything, about our family further than a couple of generations back. Effective genealogical or family history research often begins with identifying goals, such as solving a family mystery or researching one of your family’s surnames. As you do initial research, you will find that those goals will take shape and give you a direction to work toward. This six-week course will provide you the necessary tools to begin your journey into family history and genealogical research. The format of the class will include hands-on Internet research. Consequently, some computer familiarity is advised. Materials will be provided by instructors and a one-year Lincoln County Genealogical Society membership will be gifted to class participants. If possible, please bring information (name, date of birth or age estimate, and residence location) of an ancestor who was living in United States in 1940. In this class you will learn how to build a basic family tree and organize your information. You’ll learn how to evaluate and analyze sources, becoming familiar with a variety of genealogical websites along the way. You will discover your family’s history by way of census reports, birth, marriage and death records, immigration and military records, and by networking and collaborating with other family researchers. Not for nothing is pickleball the fastest-growing sport in America. It’s easier on the knees and ankles than racquetball or tennis, yet it’s good exercise – and great fun. The sport is easy to pick up, and it’s got a legion of fans right here in Lincoln County, including at the rec centers in Newport and Lincoln City. A new leader, for a new OCCC Program OSCAR JUÁREZ TRADES EL PASO FOR NEWPORT TO LEAD EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM Amidst a backdrop of ferns and firs, a little potted cactus sits on a windowsill at Oregon Coast Community College’s Central County Campus in Newport. It’s there to help ease the transition for Oscar Juárez as he acclimates to his new environment. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Oscar moved to Newport early in the year to head the College’s brand-new Early Childhood Education program, and though he has no regrets, he admits it has been an adjustment. “I definitely miss the climate, that’s why I have this little guy with me,” he said, tilting his head toward the colorful pot. “But Newport actually reminds me of home in lots of other ways. Even though I came from a big city, we have a small-town feel – and I like that there is that small-town feel here, too. Also, one of my daughters, Clara, came out with me for the interview. She liked it here, so that sealed it.” Oscar and his wife, Terry, have five children. Clara, 21 years old, and Yasmin, 20, are currently college students. Their other three children Jesus, 17, Oscar B., 13, and Alicia, 10, are still in school, so the family decided that Juárez would make the move alone until the end of the current term, with the family due to join him in Newport in June or July.
I felt this was a community that needed me more, and now that I’ve been here for a bit, I feel I made the right choice.
The early education of an early educator
Though Juárez originally went to college to study chemistry, a conversation with his old high school chemistry teacher caused him to change lanes. At the time, he was just two semesters shy of graduating with a bachelor’s degree. “He told me he thought I would enjoy teaching better than being stuck in a lab,” Oscar said. “At that time, my family had started to grow and my priorities were changing, so instead of finishing school I looked for work and ended up at the Head Start program.” He found the work very fulfilling, but a peer at Head Start encouraged him to go back and finish his bachelor’s, which he ultimately did at New Mexico State University. Still not satisfied, he applied for a graduate program at the University of Texas at El Paso. “I was told that I was accepted on the first day that class started, so I had to get everything like my student ID, financial aid, and books taken care of really fast,” he said. “But even with that rough beginning, I finished, so I was happy, and it has made me more sympathetic to what many students have to go through to get everything they need to start a new program.” After graduating with a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, Oscar continued to work for Head Start. “I continued with Head Start because they were the first ones to give me an opportunity,” he said. “But I also found that I love working with kids that come from low-income families. That’s really what kept me there.”
Growing teachers
The OCCC Early Childhood Education Pathway Certificate program will prepare students to work at programs like Head Start, become family child care providers and child care teachers, or will get them on their way toward a teaching degree if that is the direction they choose to take. “Individuals who want to work as teachers with infants or in preschool settings need to have as a minimum a certificate in Early Childhood Education,” said Linda Mollino, OCCC’s Director of Career and Technical Educational programs. “There are some people who want to work in the field but not as teachers, or they may already be working in the field and just want to show proof that they have some training but don’t necessarily plan on earning a certificate or a two- or four-year degree.” This program will assist them in moving up on the Oregon Registry. Partial funding for the new program, which is based on the one at Portland Community College, came from a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust. “We addressed it as a rural education project with two components: early childhood and K-12,” Mollino said. “The goal is to get more people into early childhood education in Lincoln County and to keep them here, because that’s something we have a need for.” The way the program is structured, students can actually get in to the early education program during high school. “The program only launched this winter, but we already have high school students who are interested in early childhood education,” Mollino said. “Students can take dual credit classes; meaning that they can be taking classes with us or at the high school, and get credit at both for the same class. That way they can be almost finished with their certificate by the time they graduate. It also gives them an early taste of what college will be like.” Early Childhood Education program participants also have opportunities to experience the industry by volunteering at the Lincoln County School District.
Even more education pathways
Mollino and other staff hope that OCCC will help fill the need for local grade and high school teachers as well. Through a new rural teacher education program, also funded by Meyer Memorial Trust, OCCC is working with the Lincoln County School District to provide local residents with the chance to earn a four-year teaching degree right here at home – excepting about nine months studying in Monmouth at Western Oregon University – and to help them find permanent teaching positions right here in Lincoln County after they complete their degrees. “They can take their general education requirements here and earn an associate’s degree, then finish their four-year degree at Western Oregon University, and then come back here for their practicum,” Mollino said. “Basically what we are doing is growing teachers. As a career choice, teachers are in high demand, and we always try to provide opportunities for job security.”
Connecting with the community
Accepting the Early Childhood Education Program position was made slightly harder for Oscar by a competing offer from a different employer at about the same time, but ultimately, he went with his heart.
“My alma mater called me with the same type of position at almost the exact same time as I heard from OCCC,” he said. “I felt this was a community that needed me more, and now that I’ve been here for a bit I feel I made the right choice. I have a lot of experience working with low-income families, and as a Hispanic person, I’ve heard from people that said they were excited to see someone with their skin color who can speak their language, and others saying that seeing me in this job gives them hope.” According to Mollino, Juárez’s educational background, work experience at Head Start and his cultural background were large factors contributing to his appointment. “Part of Oscar’s role is representing the program in all of the different communities we have here in Lincoln County,” she said. “We feel we made the perfect choice.” Whether the windowsill that holds his cactus is here on the Oregon Coast, or somewhere much warmer, what gets Oscar Juárez springing out of bed in the morning is the passion he has for his work. “The most satisfaction I’ve ever had was walking down a hallway where all the kids knew who I was and were calling out my name,” he said. “I felt like a rock star. Parents of kids who weren’t even in my classes would say that they heard about me more than about their kid’s regular teachers. That’s been my greatest joy, and now I get to help grow a program that will give other people the same chance to find that joy.” – Story & photos by Gretchen Ammerman

To get started, attend a mandatory two-session orientation at either location (see below). Real Estate Broker License Course
Have you tried studying online, independently (and alone) for your Real Estate Broker’s License test? All too often, independent online study grinds on for months and months longer than you planned. This class is designed to keep you and your classmates on track, week in and week out, as you work as a group and independently towards preparing to successfully take your Real Estate Broker License test. County residents aged 65 or better receive free tuition for credit classes County residents aged 65 and above get free tuition for credit classes on a space-available basis, when taken as an audit. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees, books, or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. To use the waiver, find the class you’d like to take in this schedule (p. 14-17), but don’t register yet. Print out the senior waiver form from the College website, oregoncoastcc.org/seniorwaiver, and contact the instructor on the first day of class. Get the instructor’s permission to take the class and have them sign the form, then return to Student Services in Newport or Lincoln City. After the waiver has been applied to your account, you will be instructed how to easily log into the myOCCC system and pay any fees not covered by the waiver. Registration prior to the first class will void waiver.
You must be an OCCC student to use this waiver. Becoming a student is as easy as filling out OCCC’s online application for admission. For details about the waiver, visit oregoncoastcc. org/seniorwaiver, or simply call 541-867-8501.
