The Hillary Factor Here's an interesting fact. If you're 52 or younger, you've never voted in an election where a Bush or Clinton wasn't a candidate, running mate or in the administration. It was hardly a surprise when Hillary Clinton formally announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination this past Sunday. The Republicans have been gearing up to run against Ms. Clinton for years now, it seems. On the other hand, Dems with presidential ambitions (who aren't named Clinton) have been very, very quiet thus far. Vice President Joe Biden, for example, has claimed that he still has “plenty of time” to

decide if he wants to run to succeed his boss in the White House… …I don't think Biden will throw his hat in the ring. He's managed to put his foot in his mouth plenty of times as veep and I don't really think he could sustain a full-on presidential campaign without self-destructing in some way. There's been a good bit of talk about former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley in recent weeks, but he's still a relative unknown. My favorite Wikipedia tidbit on O'Malley is the fact that he has been called “the rock'n roll Governor” for his membership in the Celtic

rock band O'Malley's March. He has played the banjo, guitar and sung for the band since 1988. Bill Clinton used his skills on the saxophone to help pump up his public image. Perhaps O'Malley can pick and grin his way into greater national visibility as well… …Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders might also take a run at the Democratic nomination. While I am often impressed with Sanders' views, he is another of those potential candidates with zero chance at winning in the primaries. Regardless, Bernie can always be counted on for holding others' feet to the fire on social justice issues and just having him involved in the debates would be worthwhile… …Then there's Elizabeth Warren. If there's one politician who genuinely goes to bat for “the little guy,” it's the Massachusetts

Senator and former Harvard Law Professor. But despite a grassroots effort to get her to run for president, she has repeatedly said she won't. It's hard to imagine Warren being willing to do what it takes to raise a campaign war chest. She has publicly attacked most of the big banks who are backing the Clinton campaign, for example. Warren seems quite content in her role as the liberal lioness of the Senate…

land. As a former Senator and Secretary of State, she has more legislative and foreign policy experience than any of her potential opponents from either party. And that doesn't even count her experience as a top policy advisor during her husband's two presidential terms… …Everyone knows that Bill will be a huge asset to Hillary on the campaign trail. Some are overlooking the value that the former first daughter brings to the table. Now 35, Chelsea Clinton (who has retained her famous surname despite her 2010 marriage to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky) will be counted on to help translate her mom's message for younger voters. Hillary's name will be on the ballot, but it's Team Clinton that will be running for president…

…So… back to Hillary Clinton. I've mentioned on several occasions that I just don't think she comes off as “likable.” Perhaps part of this comes from the inevitable comparisons to her husband. As President, Bill Clinton had a certain “everyman” appeal that Hillary just can't pull off. That being said, most criticism of her has nothing to do with her actual qualifica- …Here's the thing: Every other tions for the highest office in the presidential candidate from

both parties is reacting to Hillary Clinton. The Republicans have been loading up on opposition research for years and it seems that some of them are already campaigning against her. Lord knows she'll be able to outspend her Democratic primary opponents. I have some issues with her ties to the investment banks that almost scuttled our entire economy, but my pragmatic side realizes that anyone who runs for president has to sell off slices of their soul to even get in the game. Hillary Clinton is definitely in the game. In fact, she is the prohibitive front-runner at this point. Something truly remarkable will have to happen for another Dem to win the nomination… something really bad in her campaign or something truly miraculous in someone else's… -

STUDENT LOAN DEBT - 3 TIPS TO PAYING OFF YOUR STUDENT LOANS

Because the cost of tuition rises almost every year and the actual costs are astronomical, it is not uncommon to graduate from college with a boat load of debt. But here is a hard and fast rule of life, the burden of paying off your college debt is significantly greater than the burden of the few weeks you spent prepping for finals. Step off that stage and in six months or less; you will be making payments like never before.

The Actual Middle Class This is not the first, nor will it be the last article regarding this topic, so one more can't hurt. My name is Emily, and I currently owe $126,000 in student loan debt. I tried to think about what I could have done differently to not be in this stressful situation at the age of 26. I could have worked more in college to pay on the interest accruing, letting my grades slide. I could have applied for more scholarships, but I still wonder how much of a difference that would have made, being an average white girl with no athletic skills; I was born into this fate, as a middle class citizen. At least that is what I thought. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. My father worked second shift in the steel mill and my mother went back to school to become a nurse. Unfortunately that did not last long; after breaking my arm in the care of a babysitter, she felt guilty and decided to quite. A few years later my father got laid off. We sold our house and moved in with my grandparents. My mother started to work as a secretary in a pediatrician's office and my father found a job working as a bus driv-

er for the city. This was the biggest blessing my family ever got. My dad, without a college degree, was now part of a union and making decent money-at least more money than my family ever made before. In a few years, we were able to save for a house and move out of my grandparents. The rest of my childhood was relatively normal and for the most part we were an ordinary happy family. We had good times; we had bad times and through the years my family grew stronger. Then it came time for my family to enter the era of our lives known as college. My brother started first, wanting to become a secondary education math teacher. My mother started second working towards a degree in Business Leadership. She believed that if she stuck it out, we would as well. Then I started. I decided to go to the University of Pittsburgh and stay close to my family. What I did not know at the time was that this university was the most expensive public university in the country! My brother helped me apply for financial aid, but I could never receive enough money. The government thought my middle class

family made too much, so I had to take out 70 thousand dollars of private loans at insane interest rates, some up to 9.5%. Nevertheless, I graduated in May 2011 with a B.S. in Information Science and a 3.85 GPA. My brother, my mother, and my friends continued their education at the graduate level. To live up to, what I thought was the expectations of others; I decided to follow in their footsteps. I elected to try the field of education on for size this time. Although a stellar programmer, I could not face the fact that I would be spending most of life isolated behind cubicle walls. I wanted to help, talk to others, and make a difference with my daily work. I decided education would be a perfect way to do just that while still using my IT expertise. As a result, I received my M.Ed. in Instructional Systems from the University of Pennsylvania, which unknown to me at the time is the second most expensive public university in the country! During the pursuit of my master's degree and since my graduation, I have been working mostly in the IT field trying to pay off my loans. It's been three years, and I have yet to see my debt amount decrease by more than a thousand dollars. In addition to this, my boyfriend, who serves the country, was transferred this year to San Diego, CA. I cannot say that it's a bad place to live with its bright sunny weather and palm trees, but I can say that it is an expensive place to live. Our rent amount has almost tripled from what it was in Pittsburgh, and the job I found now pays less. I now work for a non-profit university training IT. For all the reasons I went into education as a graduate student, I love this particular job. So here I am right now: I live in the perfect city, with the perfect boyfriend, and perfect job. However, it seems like my student loans have stripped all of those perfects out of that one sentence. My perfect boyfriend and I want to get married but cannot afford to. We want to buy a house in this perfect city but cannot afford to. I want to keep my perfect job, but I

cannot afford to either. Isn't it ironic? At my current job, I can only afford to pay the minimum payments on my student loans with nothing left over to save for anything else, leaving my boyfriend to pay the expensive rent. At this rate, it will take me more than ten years to pay off my loans. I will then be 36 and my boyfriend will be 43. I can only hope by this time in our lives my father will still be alive to walk to me down the aisle, my body won't reject having children, and the housing market will not increase exponentially. What about President Obama's student debt plans for the middle class? Being a middle class citizen, somehow I make too much money for those plans to bring my monthly payments down; even if they did, they do not factor in all the private loans I had to take out. I'm stuck and will never be able to afford to get ahead. As many of us are and forever will be stuck in this middle class crunch. Ultimately, it's my fault; I am not putting the blame on anybody's shoulders. I could have done things differently. Maybe I should have gone to state schools that weren't recognized academically but were more affordable. Maybe I should have convinced myself that I could still live up to my potential by attending community college. Where would I be now if I would have done these things? Would I have had the same experiences, knowledge, education, and "perfect" life that I have now but without this extraordinary amount of debt? I think it's doubtful. If I went to a lower ranked school, I may have not made my way into graduate school or may have not had the job opportunities I have had. All in all, our system is not set up to get ahead, especially for a middle class girl like me. I just want to know, how many people are out there like me? Obama's middle class is now getting help to afford college and the rich don't have to worry about it. Where does that leave people like ACCTTU UAALL middle class? me, the A

ALLENDALE, Mich. (UPI) - A Michigan college student’s April Fools’ prank gone wrong was blamed for an apartment fire that led to a building being evacuated, firefighters said. The Allendale Fire Department said crews from Allendale, Blendon Township, and Georgetown Township responded Wednesday morning to battle the blaze in an apartment near the campus of Grand Valley State University. Investigators said the

fire apparently started when one of the four female college students living in the apartment tossed a fire cracker at a roommate as part of an April Fools’ Day prank and the firework landed in hamper, igniting the laundry inside. Neighbors said the girls knocked on the doors of other units in the search for a fire extinguisher, but the fire had grown too large by the time they were able to bring one back to the apartment. Capt. David Pelton of the Allendale Fire Department said the fire was the first he knew

of to be started by an April Fools’ prank. The extent of the damage to the building was unknown Wednesday, but residents were allowed to return to two of the building’s six units. Firefighters said other residents were expected to be able to return later Wednesday, but the apartment where the fire started was unlikely to be considered safe. Firefighters said the girl whose prank ignited the flames probably won’t face charges from the incident.

PEARLAND, Texas (UPI) Authorities in Texas said six high school students were arrested on drug charges in an operation that echos the plot of the 21 Jump Street TV show and film. The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said it worked together with the Pearland Independent School District to have a deputy enrolled as a high school student at Pearland High School from Aug. 25, 2014, to Dec. 19, 2014, and then at Dawson High School from Jan. 6

of this year until March 27. The sheriff’s office said two juveniles were arrested at Pearland alongside adult student Aaron Coleman, 18. Dawson students Kevin Lambert, 18; Jonathan Gonzales, 17; and Matthew Van Richardson, 18, were also arrested. Investigators said they seized drugs including cocaine, marijuana, alprazolam and tramadol during the course of the operation. The arrested students are facing charges including delivery of marijuana, delivery of a controlled substance and delivery of a dangerous drug. “I appreciate the collaborative efforts of the county and city to safeguard the lives of our students through a combination of law enforcement and preventive measures. It is critical that we remain proactive, vigilant and intolerant with regard to drug offenses affecting our students,” Pearland ISD Superintendent John Kelly said in a statement. The sheriff’s office said the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force and the Pearland Police Department participated in the operation. “School is not a place that you should come in and try to sell your drugs, or come in and buy drugs, you go there to be educated,” Sgt. James Brawner of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office told KPRC-TV. He said the investigation is continuing. “There is still ongoing off campus investigations,” Brawner said. “We have

wrapped up on campus, and now we are moving out into the communities and trying to further it that way.” PHILADELPHIA (UPI) A Philadelphia 4-year-old who wandered away from home at 3 a.m. and boarded a bus in a search for a slushie has promised to wait for her parents next time. Harlan Jenifer, driver of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority No. 56 bus, said a man flagged down his vehicle about 3 a.m. Friday in the Tacony neighborhood and told him he had found the young girl wandering the streets alone. “Got to be kidding me! At this time, at 3 o’clock on the morning,” Jenifer told WPVI-TV. “She’s a small little thing. It kind of just shocked me.” The girl, Annabelle, got onto the bus while Jenifer called police. “All I want is a slushie, that’s all she said!” Jenifer said. “It was too funny,” Jenifer told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I was scared for her, but it was funny. She was in good hands.” Annabelle’s parents, Jaclyn Mager and Timothy Ridgeway, said the girl has promised not to wander off on her own in the future, but they changed the locks on their home just in case. “There are no words, he saved my daughter’s life,” Mager said of Jenifer. “I’ll be forever grateful.”

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (UPI) - An Arizona man who was surveying the bag of a recently purchased used set of golf clubs says he found a loaded pistol inside one of its pouches. Mel Grewing and his wife, Cheryl, originally spotted the clubs in a thrift store in Sedona, the Mojave Valley Daily News reported. Though he already owned a set, Grewing purchased the clubs and brought them to the couple’s seasonal home in Bullhead City. While searching the golf bag’s pouches for extra balls, tees and other accessories, Grewing says he found a Browning Arms .22-calber match-shooting pistol. A loaded magazine was inserted and the safety was off, he said. “If a child would have pulled that out and pulled the trigger, something (tragic) could have happened,” Grewing told the Daily News. The Grewings already own similar firearms and say they are recreational target shooters. The couple took the pistol to the Bullhead City Police Department, which found through a search of federal databases that the weapon was not reported stolen and was not registered to an owner. Grewing said he and his wife would keep the gun. “If no owner is located or contact attempts have failed, the gun may be released to its finder,” department spokeswoman Emily Fromelt told the Daily News.

STOCKTON, CA. - There was a bit of controversy a couple years ago when power companies first started installing so-called Smart Meters. Opponents said that the Smart Meters were too intrusive, tracking information about their power usage that amounted to an invasion of privacy. There were even a couple of stories about home owners who blocked technicians from installing Smart Meters in their homes, resulting in police intervention. As it turns out they were frightened of the wrong thing. While Smart Meters still MAY BE invading peoples’ privacy with the amount of information they track, the real danger comes from them exploding. Granted, the explosions were caused by a dump truck crashing into a substation in Stockton, California, but on the other hand you didn’t see a lot of stories about the old meters exploding. The power company said the dump truck hit a utility pole which caused some transmission wires to come in contact with each other, creating a power surge. The explosions started at around 8:30 a.m. and interrupted power to more than 5,000 homes. Residents in the area described it as a large pop or a bomb going off, and strong enough to shake a house. Yeah, maybe the power company knowing what time of day you run your washing machine isn’t the most dangerous feature of these things.

T. GRAHAM BROWN It’s hard to believe that someone with so many number one singles and top ten songs that it took them this long to nominate T. Graham Brown for a Grammy. Graham came to everyone’s attention singing jingles and performing in many commercials for some of the biggest players in the game - everyone from Taco Bell to McDonalds and everyone in between. A true survivor, he survived his own mega-success and found the proper path. In 2014 he released a Gospel album “Forever Changed” that netted the singer a couple of number one singles and his first ever Grammy nomination. And there’s no indication of anything slowing him down anytime soon. Thank you for putting my name in the paper.

Nashville’s known for songwriting. Everybody that lives there listens to songs. I listen to songs when I’m getting ready to cut something. I try to find the best songs. There’s a ton of songwriters here. It’s that old joke: How do you get a songwriter off your front porch? Pay him for the pizza.

Probably. I know Sheila had me tow really cool suits made this year that a guy from Hollywood named Harvey Krantz. He must be 80 years old. He’s done them for everybody. I looked him up one night on the internet. He’s done them for every act from The Temptations, George Jones, Leon Russell - hundreds of them. There used to guy named Nudie [Cohen] that did these Nudie suits. Harvey and Nudie were contemporaries. Nudie died and then Manuel [Cuevas], one of Nudie’s students, you might say, has moved to Nashville and he has a neat store here. He still makes some good stuff. There’s not anyone willing to do that these days. I don’t wear them all the time, but it’s cool to have them hanging in the closet anytime I feel like it. They’re expensive; I know that for a fact. (laughs) That might be why nobody wears them these days.

Twin Shadow and Lolawolf Evoke A Sound of A Better Time Hipsters and believers alike were treated to a nice showcase featuring two acts on the rise recently at Terminal West in Atlanta. Twin Shadow for those who don’t know is DominicanAmerican singer George Lewis Jr. who calls Brooklyn home these days. While his cred has been on the rise the last couple of years or so

amongst the younger set, those a little older will find some comfort in the music of Twin Shadow. With three albums under his belt and currently touring to support his latest, Eclipse, there is a nice familiarity to the sound. The songs of Twin Tiger, while lyrically modern, the music is very reminiscent of alternative staples of the ENIGMA

radio from the mid-eighties like The Fixx, Depeche Mode and other synth bands without sounding too corny or overly poppy. Opening the show was Lolawolf. Lolawolf is fronted by Zoe Kravitz, the offspring of rocker Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet. The slinky Kravitz and the band put on a really intense show much

like the headliner with music that pays tribute to the eighties without paying tribute to the fashion and big hair. Lolawolf’s sound is a little more modern with a big electronic beat to it which sounds tribal at time. The beat can be best described at times a digital tribal with a little soul thrown in.
