(Not) Dodging The Draft I’ve been trying to remember have to be very good at preexactly when the National dicting draft picks to be conFootball League player draft spun out of control. ESPN televised the draft for the first time back in 1980, but it didn’t become a prime time event until 2010. Last Thursday night’s first round was a three-hour marathon of large guys in gaudy suits, guys huddled around telephones and repetitive video of a mostly empty podium. …The 2014 draft will be remembered for the 22nd pick of the first round and the 34th pick of the seventh (and final) round. The ESPN cameras and the rest of the media spent most of last Thursday night talking about Johnny Manziel. Manziel’s draftability was in “free fall,” according to most. By the time the Cleveland Browns picked the former Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M poster boy, I just wanted the hype to end. Manziel went up a couple of notches in my book when he returned to College Station, Texas, and bought a round of beers (Miller Lites, apparently) and shots for everyone in his favorite bar. The Browns went up a couple of notches in my book when owner Jimmy Haslam (well-known here in

Tennessee as the former CEO of the Pilot Flying J truck stop empire) urged Johnny Football to “start acting like a backup quarterback.” Brian Hoyer remains the starter in Cleveland and Manziel will have to work hard and learn fast if he hopes to live up to his hype… …Michael Sam’s selection by St. Louis was the most highprofile seventh-round pick in NFL history. All because the 249th overall selection of this year’s class was the first openly gay player to enter the draft. In case you’ve been living in a cave for the last week or so, Sam celebrated his selection by kissing his boyfriend and smearing celebratory cake all over his face. This scene sparked more controversy than Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl nip slip. Homophobic reactions on Twitter and elsewhere were only surpassed by the media coverage of the homophobic

reactions on Twitter and elsewhere. The former Missouri defensive end was openly gay during his collegiate career

and it didn’t seem to hamper him much. The former SEC Defensive Player of Year will face a few more challenges in the NFL, however. The Rams weren’t desperate to sign a defensive end in the draft and Sam will be battling for a ros-

“imaginary girlfriend” and go on to have a great first season for the San Diego Chargers, Sam should be able to survive the attention he’ll get for his sexual orientation. Sam chose to make his sexuality public and should be ready for the consequences. Te’o was the - Mark Bedford victim of a cruel hoax…

…My favorite story from this year’s NFL draft didn’t get as much national media coverage as Manziel’s “free fall” and Sam’s big kiss. Former MTSU defensive lineman Jimmy Staten was the 32nd and final pick of the first round. He was attending his college graduation when he found out. That’s right. He had his cell phone on during the ceremony and took the call from Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider while sitting in his cap and gown. When he learned of Staten’s selection, MTSU president Sidney McPhee interrupted the graduation ceremony to share the news with the crowd gathered at the Murphy Center. Staten was the first MTSU player to be drafted since 2011. The best part of the story, for me, is the fact that he was at his college graduation when he got the news. Perhaps the concept of “student-athletes” isn’t dead yet…

MONEY MANAGEMENT

HOW TO AVOID TOO MUCH STUDENT DEBT It's that exciting time of year when high school seniors have decided on where they'll head for college in the fall. At the same time, many juniors begin to apply to the colleges of their dreams. A school's academic rigor and programs, student-toteacher ratios, athletic opportunities, size and location are all important considerations when identifying a good fit. So is cost - especially if your child plans to take out student loans. The best way to help your child avoid accruing overwhelming student loan debt is to take time now to show them the bigger financial picture. This includes helping them understand how their loan payments may affect their financial situation post-graduation. To start:

transportation expenses. To determine the total cost of attendance at the colleges of interest to your child, visit their websites. You also can consider the impact of any merit, athletic or need-based scholarships or grants (money that you don't have to pay back) that your child may receive to calculate his or her actual cost of attendance. * Identify the average starting salary for a position in their future field - Experts recommend that a student loan payment be less than 8 percent of the student's gross income. Of course, salaries will vary by field and region. For information about student placement rates and average starting salaries for different degrees, conduct an Internet search or consult the career placement office at the school(s) your child is considering.

* Determine which colleges are affordable - Tuition and fees are only the starting point in determining what a school costs. Other factors include * Calculate the monthly payroom and board, books and ment on a student loan - The supplies and personal and monthly payback amount on

ENIGMA

any loan will depend on its interest rate, repayment plan and payback period. For example, if the interest rate on a $26,000 student loan is 4% and equal payments are made over 10 years, the monthly payment is $263. The best way to test different loan scenarios is to use an online student loan repayment calculator. * Illustrate their future costof-living expenses - Many young adults don't realize all the costs that come with living on their own. Although a $45,000 starting salary may seem like a lot of money to someone who may have previously worked for or near minimum wage, the number can look much different after you deduct: 1. Taxes - federal, state and Social Security taxes 2. Insurance - health, dental, auto, renters or homeowners, and life or disability income insurance 3. Fixed expenses - housing,

6

car payments, cell phone, cable TV, internet, college loan and utilities 4. Variable expenses - groceries, gas, clothing, toiletries and entertainment 5. Savings - an employer sponsored 401(k) plan or other investments The bottom line? Helping your child make smart choices now so that they are financially sound when they become selfreliant is one of the best gifts you can give them. For help assessing which colleges make the most sense based on your family's goals and financial situation, consult your financial advisor - you could even have your son or daughter attend an upcoming meeting. Your advisor can help you evaluate the short and long-term implications of student loans and help your family identify which colleges offer you the best value.

I Challenge The World The other day, I was out for an easy jog, but soon found myself sprinting up the side of a rather large and long foothill, why? Why would I challenge that hill on such an average day? Simple, because, I am not average, I do not wish to participate in mediocrity and I don't want to be a number amongst the many, a dot in an endless crowd of GroupThinkers. So, I challenged the hill, why - because it was there, and I hereby challenge the world too, for the same reason. You see, it is time for humans to get a move-on, get out of this rut of victimhood and of false leaders spewing nonsense, gallivanting around less than scantily clad. It's time to call out the Teleprompters In Chief, the socalled Emperors, and the mucky mucks who've self-ordained themselves our fearless leaders while they hide behind their security forces afraid to come out in public. Why, because we are

here and their power is illusionary. For those who blindly follow, well you are no friend to humanity, nor are you noble with integrity, indeed, those who will not stand up and challenge the unfounded, undeserved and illegitimate pedestal and ivory tower sitters are just as dastardly as our false leaders. We can do better than this, you know it and I know it. I challenge the world. Because this isn't good enough for the 21st Century, I am not impressed, I am underwhelmed and isn't it time someone did something about it. If not me, then whom, if not now then when? Yes, I'd like some help, but I don't feel more time is warranted for such a worthy cause, no more delays, it's time to move the ball forward for the right reasons, not because of someone else's political agenda in some game plan undisclosed to us,

HOUSTON (UPI) - Houston police are trying to wipe out a recurring crime wave by flushing out the identity of a man who has been caught on surveillance cameras going No. 2 on lawns and driveways in the city’s Woodland Heights neighborhood. The disgruntled dumper has been leaving messes all over the neighborhood, and has pooped at one house at least six times. “It’s definitely not a nice thing to do to people,” said

Patrick Reese, who lives nearby. “Going to the bathroom in their driveway is not nice. That’s definitely not something that’s supposed to go on in polite society.” It is believed that the “serial pooper” usually strikes late at night or early in the morning under the cover of darkness. The man usually cleans himself up with a paper towel and then leaves the soiled sheet on the sidewalk for someone else sanitize. “This is our neighborhood,” area resident Aimee Parsons told Click 2 Houston. “Whatever people think should go

on around here — pooping is not okay. We don’t want dogs pooping in our yards why would we want a human? It is very strange.” Deputies with the Precinct One Constable’s Office say the man will be charged with indecent exposure or criminal mischief charge when he is caught. MONTREAL (UPI) - An elementary school in Montreal was apparently so concerned about the fallout from a student wearing a Boson Bruins hockey sweater that it opted to cancel Canadiens jersey

day. The event was supposed to happen on Thursday prior to the game between the two teams that night. Officials at Honoré-Mercier Elementary School canceled the event after a parent complained that an 11-year-old girl was asked to remove her Bobby Orr Bruins jersey on a prior Canadiens jersey day. “She’s been a Boston Bruins fan all her life, so she kinda felt really bad. She felt kind of excluded from the school,” her father, Tony Pasquale, told CBC News.

Pasquale did not make the complaint himself and he was critical of the decision to cancel. “It teaches respect, sportsmanship. We can’t all be from the same thread,” he said. English Montreal School Board spokesman Mike Cohen defended the school’s decision. “We don’t think it’s prudent for a student to wear a Boston Bruins jersey in a school during this very intensive playoff play,” Cohen said. “At this stage in the game, with the Canadiens leading the series 2-1, why ignite things, why create a controversy?” Unfortunately for the administrators at Honoré-Mercier Elementary School, the Bruins won Thursday night’s game 1-0 in overtime and the series is now tied up at two games apiece. Game 5 will be on Saturday night in Boston. NEW BRUNSWICK - It seems Mike Defazio of Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada recently blew a tire driving over one of several large potholes in his neighborhood. Sick and tired of his local government’s failure to repair the street he took matters into his own hands and spent half a day filling in the potholes using his tractor. Of course, if you know anything about government you know that infrastructure, law, order, justice, education and everything else can just go to hell, but heaven help the individual who bucks the bureaucracy and

tries to solve a problem by himself. Three days later Defazio got a call from the city’s deputy commissioner of transportation informing him he had broken the city’s bylaws and could face a fine. Apparently they were afraid that a rock could be kicked up and chip a windshield or scratch paint. Defazio says he was told city crews would be out to remove his work and he would have to cover the costs. That’s right, the city was going to dig up pot holes in the street and charge him for the labor to do it. Brilliant. So he was forced to hire a crew and return the street to its original pot-holed state himself. CHICOPEE, Mass. (UPI) - During the arrest of a Massachusetts man, a police officer classified a piece of hot pizza as a “dangerous weapon” after it caused first- and seconddegree burns. James Vincent Grass allegedly shoved a piece of freshly-microwaved pizza into a 6-yearold girl’s face and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and reckless endangerment of a child. The 21year-old denied the charges against him during his arraignment. In his incident report, Officer Terry Dec wrote the girl said Grass “threw a piece of pizza in her face” when she stopped the microwave because it was steaming. When she tried to explain, Grass grabbed the pizza and asked

“Do you think this is done?” before allegedly shoving the slice in her face and saying “Is that hot enough?” According to Grass the girl asked to smell the pizza and he then “pushed her face into it.” When her mother picked her up, the girl had already popped a blister on her chin and was holding a wet towel to her face.

Alter Bridge Brings their Fortress

It’s hard to believe that Alter Bridge has been around for ten years. It’s even odder to think they were formed from the ashes of Creed. That’s right if you think about it, Alter Bridge is Creed with Myles Kennedy instead of Scott Stapp singing. The big difference is the music. The band was overshadowed by Stapp and to a degree weren’t taken serious until they became Alter Bridge. Kennedy is a great comliment to the band who adds style and substance to the band without making an ass of himself or the band. Those in the know knew these guys could play, and it was no more evident than recently when they performed at the

The Kids Are Alright While the first Saturday in May means its time for the annual Running of the Chihuahuas, there was a great amount of noise coming from the stage at the First Tennessee Pavilion in Chattanooga. A group of up and coming artists put on a show for the young fans in attendance. All are on their way up and some may become the next Austin Mahone who has really broken big the in past year. In fact, a few years ago Mahone was one of the acts here at the Hits 96 Running of the Chihuahuas. This year featured everything from a hippop group featuring two female and two male singers/ rappers (My Crazy Girlfriend), a singer/songwriter with local roots (Bean) to an indie rock import three-piece from Sweden (Nonono), a trio of teen pop rockers from Ohio (New Hollow) and a band – the big draw of the day a pop boy band that featured a member of Big Time Rush (Heffron Drive) who brought the teen girls to their knees. It will be interesting to see who performed will become tomorrow next big thing.
