A Message from the President Luis de Borja, PhD President of CETA University College of Tourism and Hotel Management

In this age of accelerated growth and change, business requires highly skilled and wellprepared professionals capable of meeting the challenges that constantly arise in our complex modern world – and the tourism sector is no exception to this. Research, innovation, and internationalization play key roles as companies, institutions and organisations adapt to ongoing economic and social transformation and move forward with new answers to changing trends, environments and market demands. And technology and creativity serve as tools used by these companies to reach existing objectives, establish new ones and forge a path into the future. In turn, tourism employers, directors and policy-makers must recognise the need for sector professionals with strong communication, negotiation and people skills which, along with flexibility, attitudes and the ability to adapt, mark the difference in leadership and management and ultimately, distinguish world-class tourism destinations. In this new context, tourism companies must be able to count on working with the best and the brightest: the best management tools, the best prepared staff and the best and the brightest innovative leaders. For universities and educational institutions, this means having an even greater responsibility than just formal, traditional instruction: it is a responsibility to companies, to students and to society, to thoroughly prepare responsible professionals capable of leading and competing in the most challenging of times. At CETA we have accepted and assumed this responsibility for almost 40 years. Our programs and courses are specially designed to bring out the best in our graduates and prepare them to meet the demands and needs of the industry while at the same time encouraging them to be professionals and leaders of the sector with clear social and international vision and respect for the world’s cultural and natural heritage. It is our mission at CETA University College of Tourism Studies and Hotel Management to prepare tourism leaders of tomorrow able to meet the challenges of these complex and critical times. And, as part of that mission, we invite you to experience and make the most of our institution, faculty and facilities and participate in that vision with us!

Tourism in Barcelona ............................... On a global scale, tourism is the main economic and dynamic activity of today’s world. Globalisation, new technologies, improved transport and continuous development of infrastructures, all serve to create a new backdrop for tourism activity with a spectacular growth potential in many countries around the world, especially Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, South America and Africa. Spain, with a record 58.5 million tourists, has consolidated its position as the second tourist destination in the world. And, Catalonia, with 14.9 million tourists and an annual growth rate of foreign visitors superior to 7 %, has become the main tourist destination for Europeans. Barcelona, without a doubt one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, has seen a huge increase in its number of tourists. With a growth of a 19.3 %, this beautiful city boasts more than six million tourists and thirteen million overnight stays annually. This most spectacular increase has been taking place for more than a decade; turning Barcelona into an international reference in tourism as the European leader in the majority of tourist activities.

Today Barcelona • is the European reference for urban tourism, • has the most important cruise port in Europe and the Mediterranean • has experienced the greatest airport growth in Europe at the El Prat Airport • stands among the world’s five most popular cities for congress and convention organisation • boasts the greatest commercial area in Europe: the designated Barcelona Shopping Line with more than 35,000 shops • has one of Europe’s greatest gastronomic offers with more than 11,000 bars and restaurants

“Upon finishing my studies in Information Science, I decided to specialize in travel writing and photography. Believing CETA to be the best choice, I registered for evening classes which I attended every day after work. The atmosphere was great and I especially liked those subjects related to travel routes and itineraries. Since then, I have had the opportunity to travel around the world and have visited every country of the world before the age of 45. Without a doubt, my three years at CETA contributed to my preparation and it was a way to strengthen my convictions about tourism.”

Languages, a Necessary Strength ............................... Our students are given 400 hours of free additional language input to thoroughly develop their language skills, as well as the opportunity to complete their studies with additional language and culture courses in Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese. At CETA we highly encourage our students to develop their international experience and awareness by participating in many cultural and academic programs offered through the ERASMUS Exchange Program and our many private agreements with other university institutions abroad. “When I finished my studies at CETA, I went to London to improve my English and I ended up staying for fours years. I started working in a very small hotel beside the British Museum but moved on to work for the biggest hotel in London belonging to the Forte Hotels Chain. The experience was wonderful both personally and professionally! I was Head Receptionist, Duty Manager, Sales Executive and Personal Assistant to the General Manager. I am delighted to have studied this profession and most definitely for having chosen CETA, among whose members I have many friends. I love my work and I am fascinated by this sector!”

“Before initiating my studies in tourism, I contacted CETA looking for a programme that focussed on air transport because there was always one thing that I had clear about my profession: I wanted to work in close contact with airplanes. They have always fascinated me! During my final year of studies in 2002, I was placed for training with the Dutch airline KLM and have been there ever since. I feel very fortunate to have studied where I wanted, what I wanted and to be working at a job I love today!”

Eva Pomés Fuchs Ground Attendant KLM Airlines

International Training and Job Placement Opportunities CETA provides the students who want to complete their education with language perfection and international tourism experience with several training and work opportunities in a number of important tourism destinations around the world. Students can take advantage of these international opportunities as of their first year of study in the Tourism Degree or while completing a postgraduate or Master program. CETA collaborates with a number of Spanish and international hotel chains which offer our students the opportunity to train abroad with 6-18 month contracts in faraway, exotic and interesting places like Tanzania, Egypt, Malta, the Caribbean and the USA; or, closer to home in Europe in countries like Italy, Ireland, France, Greece and Germany.

“I had many unforgettable moments at CETA and I liked the relationship professors had with students. I was able to discover how the labour market worked while combining exciting and dynamic work activities with my studies. CETA established the bases of my future career in tourism.”

Activities ............................... At CETA, through our experience and close contact with the sector, we know that an important aspect of preparing our students for the world of tourism is giving them the opportunity to visit, see and meet firsthand the companies, product suppliers and professionals operating in the sector. Thus, we organize and encourage off campus visits and activities for our students that include local hotels and companies as well as the main industry trade fairs such as Fitur, Hostelco, SITC or the World Travel Market where our students have a concise insight into the industry's latest advances and novelties as a complement to their theoretical education. Each year we organize more than 45 such activities and visits for our students. Along with professional visits, CETA organizes a number of cultural visits which aim to provide our students with cultural and linguistic opportunities to meet new places, have fun and practice languages. Each year several students participate in visits to France, the Netherlands and Germany where they also see how the tourism industry operates and is organized in these countries and gain firsthand knowledge about tourism destinations through the experience of being tourists themselves.

“CETA University College of Tourism has been an important contributor to my personal and professional training. The experienced staff organized several interesting educational activities in which I took part and I fondly remember the enriching exchanges with other foreign universities. Today I am a professional tour guide and have been able to turn my passion into my way of life, leading tour groups all over the world.”

Courses and Seminars During the year CETA organizes and coordinates several professional courses and seminars of great interest and relevance for professionals and executives working in the sector. We also offer customized in-company training and recycling courses for professionals and companies needing to keep informed and aware of the latest changes and trends affecting the sector.

“Almost two years after finishing my studies, I can say that choosing CETA was a good decision. During my studies I received personalized attention and a lot of support to carry out my singular projects. My training placements in Austria and Tanzania were extremely significant as I gained experience and they increased my chances of getting a job. However, the experience I had as an ERASMUS student in Rovaniemi, Finland, truly changed my life. I am still living in this country and I am working for the third season as a tour manager in a local company thanks to the quality of my degree.”

“I have very warm memories of my days at CETA. The close relationship with professors almost made it feel like I wasn’t studying. I learned a lot of the theory that has served me well in carrying out my job. Working in tourism and specifically in the hospitality business is a very enriching personal experience that allows you to meet people from different corners of the world. As a qualified and dedicated centre for tourism studies and with special emphasis on foreign languages and cultures, CETA helped prepare me for this.”

Nuria Segoviano Front Desk Reception Hotel Zenit Barcelona

“It was very gratifying to start a job where I realized that directors and colleagues, upon learning the school I came from, recognized and expressed their trust in me and my studies. The truth is many professionals in the sector studied at CETA, because we wanted an enriching academic experience derived from an international environment with classmates from other countries and expert professors in direct contact with the world of tourism business.”
