Weathering the Storm

So, Atlanta – about that winter storm last week…

Sometimes it seems like our society is becoming more toxic and combative. Chalk it up to changing social mores or the influence of the Internet era. That’s what makes the last few days feel both strange and heartwarming. Seeing people put aside their differNormally when I’m writing these letters out, I’m doing ences and unite in the face of a disasso about a week before you all see them. In other words, ter? I don’t know about you, but that the storm is more or less wrapping up as I write this. The gives me hope. snow’s melting, the roads are clearing up, and we’re starting to see temperatures above freezing. The last couple of days have been…well, chaotic. I was born and raised in Georgia, so I’m familiar with how the state tends to shut down when a snowflake falls. But this particular storm was something else entirely. I was glad to make it home before sunset, but as I’m sure many of you did, I kept an eye on Facebook and saw how many of my friends and acquaintances were out well into the night, stuck in traffic or abandoning their cars and walking for miles to get home. As tempting as it is to be angry about the people who helped produce this chaos (Gov. Deal and Mayor Reed, I’m looking at you two), I can’t help but think about the people and businesses that selflessly helped others during this debacle. I read story after story of people bringing food and water to those stuck in traffic, or of people giving others rides. The stories just go on and on. 8 // 02.05.2014

There’s an App for That

F

or gay men looking for love – or, more likely, something a lot quicker – mobile apps have made meeting men easier, or at least quicker. With so many apps available, though, there’s a challenge in finding one (or a handful) that’s right for you. So if you think you’re limited to Grindr, think again. Here are some of the apps that you’ll find other men on these days.

Distinc.tt Aimed at what the app calls the “urban” gay, Distinc. tt is an app that works better in larger cities – you know, like Atlanta. What makes Distinc. tt…well, distinct, is that you can earn points, which pushes you to different levels of membership.

Hornet Hornet is, for the most part, a pretty standard mobile app. One area where it stands out: it asks about HIV status. While it’s easy to lie, it does put the information out there at least.

Recon If you’re into anything kinky, Recon is the app for you. From leather and rubber to bondage and fisting, the various categories users can choose from are certainly wide enough. Choose wisely, though – users can only select one category for their profiles.

Grindr Grindr’s the app everyone knows about. Since it was the first mobile social app to take off, it still has the widest range of users. If you don’t really have a “type,” that’s great. If you’re into something really specific, though, you may want to look elsewhere.

Jack’d As one of the more popular apps out there, Jack’d is essentially an advanced version of Grindr. You’re likely to find all sorts of men on the app, like Grindr, but with functionality similar to what you’ll find on other apps like Scruff and Mister.

Scruff Outside of Grindr, Scruff is one of the biggest apps out there. While aimed at the bear community, Scruff encourages interaction with all sorts of men, including military and trans men. The app’s popularity has also brought in a lot of newer users who like their men scruffy.

Growlr With Growlr, there’s a good bit of overlap with Scruff for the kinds of men you’ll find on the app. If the name didn’t make it clear, we mean bears. It tends to be a little more relaxed – check out some of the premade growls, which require a healthy sense of humor.

Mister Looking for something a little more serious? You may want to check out Mister. The guys behind Mister have a particular aim for their app: they want a “grown-up version of Grindr.” The app is essentially a cross between Grindr and OkCupid.

Squirt While mainly a webbased social networking site, Squirt is branching out with a mobile version of their site that resembles an app. Unlike some of the other apps and sites out there, Squirt is pretty explicit about being for sex.

:theatre Gender Identity Issues Form the Core of ‘Whistling Psyche’

This production can only be authentically themselves by donning a disguise marks the American premiere of the piece. whether they be male or female,” says McManus. Two 19th-century innovators, Florence Nightingale and Dr. James Miranda Barry, wait in a Victorian railway station for a chance to tell their very personal stories, stories that will change the course of medicine forever. Starring Atlanta theatrical royalty Joanna Daniel and Kathleen McManus, the story is one of reflection, re-evaluation and finally, redemption.

When it comes to why gender identity issues remain a concern that some people have a hard time accepting, the woman deduce that it is morality and organized religions that play a combined role in the ongoing prejudices. At its core, though, the story is about two great people who helped to shape history.

“I found this play by accident doing research for an unrelated audition,” says McManus. “I was actually chasing down a lead on the actress Kathryn Hunter, who originated the role of Sebastian Barry›s JMB, and the man just spoke to me.” Daniel adds, “Who could not resist an artistic journey into Florence Nightingale›s life – especially when juxtaposed with the story of Dr. James Barry. The language of the piece is beautiful and poetic, coming from the pen of one of Ireland›s most celebrated playwright/poet/authors, Sebastian Barry.”

Daniel sums it up like this: “We take so much for granted in this 21st century, it’s important to be reminded about the struggles, the dedication and bravery of these two people in their quest to ensure decent, clean and sanitary conditions in our hospitals and on our battlefields. If it was not for them, we would still be doomed to the nightmarish experience that existed for anyone confined in a hospital or wounded in battle before the early to mid-1800s. And the fact that it was two women who were the instigators of these reforms I think speaks for itself!”

The story of Whistling Psyche is one set at a specific point in history, but its themes are timeless. McManus adds “Gender issues aside, it’s important that we honor those who come before us and, by blazing the trail, “There are always going to be struggles and attempts at make life more tolerable.” improving our quality of life here on earth, this is just one example,” says Daniel. “As for the gender issue, it continues Whistling Psyche by Sebastian Barry will run for two to be a controversial topic of course, but not to quite such a weeks beginning Feb. 13 at the Woodruff Arts Center Black Box Theatre (Third Floor, Woodruff Arts Center, degree as in the period of this play.” 1280 Peachtree St). A Great Big World Says Something

T

By Joseph Brownell

AGBW: We were in disbelief. We were like “Us?! Christina?! Is she sure?!” It just wasn’t news we could have ever expected in a million lifetimes. We were floored, and felt humbled and a little scared!

he title of their debut record, Is There Anybody Out There?, is probably a rhetorical question since Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino, better known as the duo A Great Big World, have been sitting in the top ten of the iTunes charts with their nearly double platinum, hit single “Say Something” featuring Christina Aguilera for months.

DA: Did you expect “Say Something” to affect people the way that it has?

The duo met nearly eight years ago at NYU. “I stalked Chad down in a practice room one night and made him listen to the songs I was writing,” Axel joked. “I was really looking for a collaborator of sorts, and Chad was ‘too busy’ for new friends and so I had to be persistent. It wasn’t my intention to sing though. Once Chad heard the songs I was writing, he helped me finish them and pushed me to sing them!”

AGBW: It’s always been a really powerful song for us. It came at a really difficult time and helped heal our broken hearts. We wrote it years ago, but decided to record it for our recent album because we knew it hadn’t reached the people we wanted it to. But what the song is doing is on a whole different level than anything we expected. It’s almost as if the song has a mind of its own. It’s bigger than us.

A Great Big World took a break from prepping the release of Is There Anybody Out There? (available now) to talk to David Atlanta about their crazy whirlwind since they got the call from Christina Aguilera, a secret musical project and why equality is important to A Great Big World.

DA: The video is heartbreaking. When you filmed, were the vignettes for the video filmed separately from your performances?

AGBW: Sometimes they were, and sometimes they weren’t. Everything was done on the same day, in the same place. And David Atlanta: In October you were playing for there’s one scene towards the end of the video where the thousands at Atlanta Pride and in November you three of us are at the piano and you can see the vignettes in were performing for millions on The Voice – has it the background. just been a whirlwind ride for you guys? Jennifer Nettles: That Girl On her solo debut, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles treads a thin line between folkpop, country and adult contemporary that works better with multiple listens.

E

By Joseph Brownell

The album kicks off with “Falling,” the best song about loss of innocence since Deana Carter slayed country radio with “Strawberry Wine.” With publicity performances of the track during album release week, this is guaranteed (rightfully so) to become a smash hit for Nettles.

ven before topping the country charts as one-half of the duo Sugarland and winning the 2008 ACM and CMA Song of the Year Award, as well as that year’s country Grammy, for the ballad “Stay,” Jennifer Nettles was that girl.

Other album highlights? Nettles pens “This One’s For You” with Sara Bareilles. Its laid back, piano-driven tune sounds like a session extension of the latter’s “Manhattan.” Nettles’ also hits a high note with ballad “Me Without You,” although at times the song could benefit from a more restrained vocal.

Cutting her teeth on the local Georgia music scene, Nettles’ voice and personality has always been bigger than the country music box that inevitably came with performing in the genre. Die-hard fans remember New Year’s Eve shows at Atlanta’s Eddie’s Attic, Soul Miner’s Daughter shows in Statesboro and Jennifer Nettles Band rewinding at The Roxy in Atlanta, as well as Nettles’ lyrical grittiness and captivating stage presence.

Nettles knows her way around a ballad, but it’s the upbeat tracks where Nettles’ displays her tongue-in-cheek wit. On “Jealousy” Nettles sings ““I didn’t really mean to cause such an ugly scene / Showing up at your house, half-drunk and crazy / Bitch, I called you out,” and never has the little green monster been so much fun. Nettles also examines our current celebrity obsession on the Richard Marx assisted “Know You Wanna Know” and our nation’s fast-paced technological dependence on “Moneyball.” All three tracks shine, but after repeated listens.

While Sugarland seemed to soften some of Nettles’ edges, you only have to look back at 2010’s Incredible Machine to see that Nettles and company were being inspired and moved by music other than country. Enter That Girl, the first major-label solo album for Jennifer Nettles. For the album’s flamenco-flavored lead single (and title track), Nettles teamed up with Atlanta-area native Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, P!nk). The result is a somewhat odd single choice but entirely catchy homage/response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” whereas Nettles’ sings she doesn’t want to be the other woman, or “that girl.” So who is Jennifer Nettles and where do the tracks on her album put her in context of today’s musical landscape? Much like the Dixie Chicks, who were searching for their musical identity in 2006, Nettles turned to Rick Rubin to help flush all that out. The result finds Nettles treading a thin line between folk-pop, country and adult-contemporary—which to some die-hard fans, has proven to be a bit of a letdown. 28 // 02.05.2014

The album’s one disappointment is the snoozer “Thank You.” Co-written with Little Big Town’s Philip Sweet, the track could’ve been included as a bonus track instead of “His Hands.” “His Hands” is a heartbreaking tale of domestic violence that begs for a video treatment and release to country radio. It’s quite easily one of Nettles’ most convincing performances since “Stay,” and the best song on the album – the deluxe iTunes version, that is. Some might claim that marriage and motherhood have softened Nettles, and, sure, gone are the “red starfish and blue lizard tails,” but what’s left is a mature woman who still has one of music’s most engaging voices.

That Awkward Moment In spite of three leads who are normally worth watching, That Awkward Moment is painful to watch.

W

ith Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s the perfect time of year for all sorts of movies with romantic elements. One of 2014’s attempts at creating something a little different is That Awkward Moment, an R-rated comedy about three best friends who have to decide what they want in their respective relationships. Unfortunately, That Awkward Moment is full of too much awkwardness, and not enough to redeem these relationships.

By Elijah Sarkesian

Daniel is a clown. He’s constantly making jokes, which can be charming. But when he’s constantly putting down his female friend who turns into a hookup, you have to wonder: in what reality would a smart, engaging woman put up with this behavior for more than five minutes. Teller’s definitely created a specific on-screen persona through previous films like The Spectacular Now and 21 & Over, and it carries over here; Teller usually has a bit more charisma, though. Compared to the others, Mikey is relatively harmless. The big problem with Mikey is his approach to trying to fix his relationship with his wife: it’s by having more sex, without talking about the bigger underlying issues of the relationship, then getting upset when things don’t work out. Mikey’s the “nice guy,” and he carries the problems of that persona throughout the film. Even though he has less to work with than the other two, Jordan has a natural charm that, for the most part, covers up some of the more glaring flaws with Mikey.

Jason (Zac Efron), Daniel (Miles Teller) and Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) are three best friends who enjoy hitting the town and finding different women to sleep with. Mikey’s pursuits are more vicarious living through the other two, since he’s already married. When his wife leaves him for another man because they haven’t had sex in six months, the three commit to one thing: no serious relationships. Almost instantly, all three are Beyond the individual characters, there’s a bigger problem drawn into relationships of different sorts that find them lying with the film: rampant misogyny. The women are barely to each other. fleshed out here, and the men treat them all like trash. Yet somehow, things largely work out for the men in spite of For a 94-minute movie, I could pretty easily list 94 problems themselves. While there may be plenty of relationships that with this film. This Week in Theatres The Monuments Men: George Clooney stars and directs in a film about a platoon in World War II assigned by FDR to rescue artistic masterpieces from the Nazis in Germany and return them to their rightful owners. The all-star cast also includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and John Goodman. The Lego Movie: The ubiquitous toy finally hits the big screen in an original story about Emmet, a lowly Lego figure who joins a group intent on battling an evil force. It may sound like pure marketing for a toy line, but this comes from the filmmakers who gave us Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, so we’re optimistic about this actually being fun. Vampire Academy: In the latest attempt to take a young adult book franchise and turn it into a film franchise, we have Vampire Academy, the story of a Dhampir (half human, half vampire, mortal) who’s training to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty immortal vampires known as the Strigoi. Will it launch a new franchise? We’ll see…

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

You may be forced to choose between work and fun today – and the stars suggest choosing fun. Remember that keeping a good work-life balance is important. There’s a difference between ambition and obsession!

A high-flying day will provide a bird’s-eye view of your life – count your many blessings while they’re all in sight. A reminder of a defunct affair may send you plummeting this evening – don’t wallow in maudlin sentiment.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

Today you should receive a sign that you are on the right spiritual path – and this sign will also point you to the next step. Watch for personal symbolism and mysterious occurrences. Read between the lines.

Apply the macro to the micro today: Grand philosophical ideas and important economic theories can help you answer personal questions of all kinds. Tonight, take the lead in making plans with your friends.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

Try to ride today’s wave of high energy through the evening – you will likely get a lot done later in the day. A somewhat meek person in your life may be unusually dominant tonight – and you’re going to love this side of him!

Don’t ignore a startling flash of inspiration today – harness it! Tonight, eat at home if you can. You should prepare at least part of the meal, and use local ingredients if at all possible. You’ll find out why soon enough.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

A forgotten or unexpected task may disrupt your afternoon or early evening – you may be asked to work late, for instance. Tonight, don’t force yourself to go out if you really feel like staying in.

You may battle frustration at work today. Be assured that great things are happening outside your view -- hang in there. This evening, you can do anything you set your mind to. It should be a fun night!

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

This evening may see you coming to a friend’s – or perhaps a new acquaintance’s – aid. Your good deed will be rewarded tenfold, as long as you don’t boast about it or embarrass its object. Your kindness will be noticed.

An invigorating, pleasant day may fade into a somewhat frustrating evening – outside forces are going to effect change in your life. Don’t fight this – it’ll turn out to be beneficial. Get a good night’s sleep tonight.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

An exterior obstacle may force you to turn inward today – the solution to a worldly problem lies in your soul. Don’t look at this interior journey as a detour: It’ll make the destination all the more meaningful.

When a boss, a parent or some other authority figure says something that is clearly untrue today, it may be advantageous to simply keep your mouth shut. This evening, a bit of unexpected glamour will color social plans.

iblings. One day we love ‘em and the next day we’re ready to cut ‘em! I’m an only child and it’s a good thing - because there was barely enough room in that house for one queen, let alone several members of royalty fighting for a place on the throne. Although, now that I’m more mature and less selfish, it would be nice to have a sibling to bond with. Fortunately, I have many cousins who range in age & drama ... and that keeps me busy putting out fires and stirring up the pot. This week’s Favorite Bitch is all about sibling rivalry and the ever timeless classic tale of Twisted Sisters! Enjoy, hunties!
