5 THINGS BY MATTHEW HOLLEY

TO KNOW ABOUT CHRIS 180’S WHITE PARTY HELP LGBT YOUTH BY DONNING TRADITIONAL WHITE FOR GAY ATLANTA’S TRADITIONAL SUMMER KICKOFF. BY MIKE FLEMING Memorial Day is a distant memory by now, so if you haven’t done it already or you were way ahead of the fashion curve, it’s time to wear white! The people at Chris 180 have the perfect place for it, too. Style traditions aside, everyone will be wearing white for Chris’ annual White Party mixer and silent auction on June 10 at Mason Fine Art. It’s the traditional way gay supporters have welcomed summer and shown their love to the local youth organization every June for eons. So what’s Chris 180? You may remember it in its previous life as CHRIS Kids, the decades-old, gay-inclusive organization for underprivileged youth. They’re still going strong with the mission to “reach out to LGBTQ youth in need – whether in foster care, homeless, or in a family in crisis.” The White Party supports those efforts. You may not need more than that to pull out your linens and cottons, but the event offers so many more reasons to attend. Here’s the lowdown on the party for you to peruse while you iron your outfit. Visit chris180.org and whitepartyatlanta.org. 20 | 6.7.17

WHO BENEFITS? Once identified, Chris 180 hooks those youths up with “safe housing, counseling, life skills training, and adoption services with the belief that every child can reach his or her potential if given the chance, and that every child deserves the chance.”

WHAT TO EXPECT The fancy surrounds of Mason Fine Art set the mood for milling about, seeing and being seen. Pitstops on your fruit loop tour include art, food, drinks and music.

WHEN AND WHERE Let us repeat s you can commit it to memory. Have yourself pulled together for Saturday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mason Fine Art & Events is located at 415 Plasters Ave. NE.

HOW MUCH? Your donations to the Chris 180 cause can come in two levels. One is basic general admission for all the fun, and one is VIP to really show the love and get some extras. $50 general admission tickets include artwork viewing, food, entertainment and limited drinks. But don’t hold yourself back. You know, for the kids. $125 VIP tickets include unlimited drinks (!), an incredible champagne bar, amazing food, white carpet photos, and of course the art and entertainment. Totally worth it if you’ve got the coins, according to the seasoned attendees of this event.

WHY AGAIN? Ahem. Chris 180, the former CHRIS Kids, is the gay-inclusive agency that not only pulls homeless and underprivileged LGBT teens off the streets, but offers them places to live, life skills training, counseling and more to give them a leg up over their circumstances. Gay Atlanta enjoys a close bond with this group because they were helping our kids long before other agencies and options existed. Another reason? You look good in white. So good. Check out our photos on these pages from White Party past.

Being in the military prepared me for a lot of things, but not my HIV diagnosis. I found it difficult to take medication every day. Fortunately, with the help of my doctor at the VA, taking my medicine is just another part of my morning routine, brush my teeth, wash my face, and take my meds. By sticking to my medication, doctor visits and support groups, I stay healthy and happy. As a support group leader, now I’m helping others to get into their own routine.

P.A.L.S. was founded in 1990 by, Dr.

Susan Wynn, a veterinarian, and Dr. Margaret Schulte, an educator, who met while doing volunteer work for Project Open Hand. Apart from having a common interest in working with HIV/AIDS patients, the two were great animal lovers. Upon hearing of an individual with HIV/AIDS who was living alone with his best friend, a cat and foregoing some of his medications in order to pay for vet care and pet food, the two women immediately began collecting pet food to aid this patient and others alike. P.A.L.S. was born. Since then, the nonprofit has grown to not only collect food, but funds and supplies any seriously patient and their pet may need. Over the past three decades, P.A.L.S. has serviced over 1,000 clients and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. And there is no stopping in sight. Start hitting the gym, grab all of your furry friends – not just the ones with four legs – and come get your push up on. Visit palsatlanta.org and/or firstgiving. com/88474/push-ups-for-pals-1

What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling”. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Lightning” is a blast and a real banger. It’s an R&B, hip-pop song that makes ya wanna dance the first second you hear it. What inspired the track? I was given a corset to wear at a photoshoot. It made me feel really sexy and girly and it gave me an impulse to write the song. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Adonis did an amazing remix. He’s a Grammy Winning producer who has worked with Chris Brown, Ciara, and JLo.

HOT SUMMER HITS SUMMER USHERS IN NEW SMOKIN’ BEATS TO DANCE THROUGH THOSE HOT SUMMER NIGHTS BY MAX JIMENEZ Remember when Carly Rae Jepson ruled the summer airwaves with “Call Me Maybe”? Or how about when Pharrell’s “Happy” was the universal anthem of summer joy? Every summer ushers in a new selection of explosive hits that are meant to heat up dance radio and club floors. We talked to the indie artists that top dance floor DJs are predicting will set gay dance floors on fire this summer. Here are their songs, and what they had to say about them.

What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? A scientist. It would be so cool to create experiments and invent something new. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Thank you for being there for me in this not-at-all easy journey! I hope you have a cheerful, happy summer with lots of sunshine! Follow Kristii on Facebook @KristiiOfficial and Instagram @kristii_music.

Kendra Erika “Under My Skin” Dauman Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” because it got me moving every time it came on the radio. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Under Your Skin” is perfect for daytime and nighttime. You can amp up your summer pool parties with it, and then later on, blast it out at the club. It’s a “big room” track that allows you to escape, which is what a lot of us are looking to do this summer. What inspired the track? Believe it or not, Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Every remix offer a different experience. If I’m in one mood, I’ll listen to one remix, and if I’m in another, I’ll throw on a different version of the track. What would you be doing if you weren’t

SUMMER HITS, Continued making music? I love writing, so I’d be an author writing enlightening books, or any kind of inspirational and reflective pieces. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Don’t worry about where the world is going. Think about where you’re going and enjoy your growth and empowerment. Let the music get under your skin and create your own oasis. Follow Kendra Erika on Facebook @ KendraErikaMusic, Twitter @Kendra_Erika and Instagram @KendraErika.

”If You Were My Baby (Remixes),” will be released on Hector’s label, AUDIO4PLAY Records.

What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? I’d be a fitness guru. Eventually, I’d like Follow DJ Pebbles on Facebook to merge my love of fitness and music @DjPebblesMusic. together and create my own fitness brand and studios called Ricky Rebel Fitness which will teach people the fundamentals of good health that I’ve learned from my musical journey. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? My message is to rebel against the darkness and shine your light. Life is short. We need to have some fun. Follow Ricky Rebel on Facebook and Twitter @RickyRebelRocks, and Instagram @RickyRebel.

Ricky Rebel “If You Were My Baby” Ricky Rebel Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance”; His voice is sensual and low and I love the beat. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “If You Were My Baby” makes you feel so good. The beat and arrangement are a throw back to the 80’s. Producer Sam Harmonix used the exact synth Prince used to make some of his records. I feel Prince’s spirit when I hear the song. What inspired the track? Sam sent the instrumental to me and I listened to it while driving in my car. The lyrics just poured out of me. This is a song I would use to let someone know I was into them. Sometimes songs are a better way to communicate than words alone. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Tommy Sunshine’s mix is amazing. He is the Godfather of EDM, for heavens sake. I also love the mix by DJ Hector Fonseca. A whole package of remixes,

What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Be yourself, be proud, go wild and never let anyone judge you for being unique.

DJ Pebbles “Heart Away from You” Friendship Collective What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance” because it’s so sexy! Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Heart Away From You” is about forbidden love and coming to terms with the idea that some things need to end in order to start anew. It’s a seductive track that drips with passion. What inspired the track? Where all good music comes from: a bad break up! Ha! Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I’m in love with the Culture Code remix! What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? I have been doing this so long that everything else is so foreign. Maybe a plastic surgeon?

Kimberly Davis (& Niles Davis & Tony Moran) “My Fire” Mr. Tan Man Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance” had me happily dancing all summer long! Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? Mike Greenley, Audrey Martells and the incredible Tony Moran wrote “My Fire”. It is the most amazing song! Then the legendary Nile Rodgers added the most perfect rhythms to take it over the top. What inspired the track? The idea for “My Fire” is that even on the darkest of days, there is a fire inside each of us that is ready to light the path forward to the place we’re meant to be. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I love them all! What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? Bored somewhere, driving everyone around me crazy because music is the one thing that makes me happy. It is my fire. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Be humble and always stay fierce! It was illegal for “known homosexuals” to buy alcohol or dance together.

The Stonewall Inn became popular with homeless youths because for $3 they were given drinks and a place where they could be all night.

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT STONEWALL

More than 100 men each week were being arrested through “entrapment” efforts.

The riots prompted a nationwide establishment of gay rights groups and newspapers.

In addition to more aggressive tactics, rioters sang and danced in “Rockette-style” kicklines in response to the police raid.

Coverage of the Stonewall Riots in the Village Voice sparked even more rioting as crowds protested the degrading reporting.

Today’s gay pride parades originated with Stonewall.

and sociological purpose. It draws people together so powerfully that they do not see each other accurately. You’re blind to faults and rush headlong into a relationship that sustains a social construct that we need as individuals and as a society. Romance, on the other hand, is perpetuated by absence. You and your paramour extended the separation and therefore the fantasy. After romance comes a different kind of bonding that you have with your husband, and it’s no less powerful and compelling.

HEY,

DADDY!

GAY MEN AND THE ‘L’ WORD

The lasting bond is more rare and precious than the romantic kind. People fall in love all the time, but they don’t fall into couples that last for years. Staying together takes a special set of circumstances and feelings that allow you to continue as part of each other’s lives. My guess is that deep down you know this already, and that you and your annual fling made your decisions based on it a long time ago.

Hey, Daddy! My boyfriend is getting too close for comfort. He leaves things at my house. He wants to introduce me to his mom. I want to bolt. Why do guys do this when things are great as is?

Hey, Daddy!

Playing House Only Brings Imminent Conclusion

MI’ve been partnered for 17 years and married for 10. Well, married in Georgia for two, but you get the point.

Dear PHOBIC:

Somewhere along year seven, the thrill was gone. We love each other, but the romance left the building. About that time, I got out of my car and met the love of my life. We had a passionate month or so, but my marriage and his wife made us end it. We see each other once a year, but as I near the big 5-0, I wonder if I set what really mattered aside for what is safe.

Still I Lament Love Yearly Dear SILLY: Romance isn’t the fire; it’s the spark. Blame evolution. That passionate feeling that entirely preoccupies you early on serves a psychological

Your guard against being hurt in the future is hurting you in the present. None of your boyfriend’s actions constitutes a lifetime obligation. Stick around long enough to discover what’s next. Progress comes from outside your comfort zone.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):

Avoid any games of verbal one-upmanship. You’ll just hurt feelings and have to eat your words. If you’re really so clever, you can figure out what needs work in your relationship. Listening to your partner will help.

Your efforts to smooth out problems at home will only backfire. If you really want things to be nice, be a good listener and get a sense of how you can improve your own self and your actions.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):

Arguments over money arise too easily, especially over silly details like splitting a lunch check. Don’t fuss over pennies. There are more important things than money. Think long and hard about what really matters. You may surprise yourself.

Being responsible for a problem does not mean being at fault and solution is more important than blame. How much responsibility you should take is hard to judge. Take on what you can, but overdoing it is self-sabotage. Gauge your capacities carefully.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):

Try a new look, go shopping for clothes. If money is tight, hit the thrift shops. Your imagination and an open mind are better than any amount of money. Good as your own queer eye is, a friend’s encouragement will help.

Eagerness to explore new sexual techniques can improve your relationship or your chances for getting into one. If your baby balks, let it be “just a suggestion.” Even without pursuing new pleasures the suggestion can open up conversations that build greater intimacy.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):

New insights can be a little scary, but best to look deeper and find out what they’re really about. Irritation with other people, awful and annoying though they are, is more about you than them.

Your ability to shut up and listen to job critiques determines your ability to profit from them. There’s always room for improvement. You don’t have to agree with every criticism, but listen and think carefully before responding.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):

You need some private down time. Plans with friends may need canceling, but that’s OK. Your real friends will understand, and the rest don’t matter. New creative efforts can cure social ennui, but the real answers are deep inside you.

Efforts at having fun are likely to get you into trouble. Unless you’re considering skydiving, that doesn’t have to stop you. How much trouble can you handle? You might find arguments fun, but your opponent is probably not amused.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

Stay calm, measure your words carefully, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Read the myth of Cassandra. Let people take or leave what you have to tell them. They’ll eventually realize you were right.

“Family fun” doesn’t have to be an oxymoron, although efforts may seem easily muddled and misunderstood. Listening rather than pushing can help. Or leave them alone and try out some new recipes or restaurants with adventurous friends.

bitch session You cling to me because you think that every minute I’m not with you I’m fooling around. Give me some space or your fear will come true.

Why you act so sweet during dating and changed completely when you knew you had me? #notimeforit

I can’t afford a two-story, both our cars, and pay your credit cards too. I love you, but I am not the one, Needy McNeedypants.

Don’t expect me to read your mind. Tell me what you want. I’m not a psychic.

When I say the sex is bad and you ask me to be specific. Well here you go: lack of enthusiasm, lack of rhythm, no creativity, and poor technique. Any questions?

Talking about your hot coworker doesn’t make me jealous; it makes me feel dispensable.

Do not text me all day at work, then I call back start whining about some little thing that could’ve waited or passed completely without me hearing about it. Don’t call me a dog just to justify that you were out there hanging out the for rent sign. I was faithful.

When I started working the graveyard shift not to be around his hard, cold self, I knew it was over.

Always trying to prove he’s smart, tough, and independent, but pitch a fit when I don’t acknowledge it. Desperate for attention isn’t your color, babydoll.
