ATLANTA DREAM HONORS LGBT FANS WITH SPECIAL-THEMED PRIDE NIGHT BY MATTHEW HOLLEY The Atlanta Dream has been riding the wave of its historic 10th season since the beginning of the year. Aside from celebrating 10 incredible years, the team has played a list of theme games for fans to enjoy throughout the season.
Photo: Dream Layshia Clarendon
Dream fans attending games at the team’s new home, McCamish Pavilion on the Georgia Tech campus, are in for an exciting treat as the theme for the game on Friday, June 23 against Chicago Sky will be LGBT Pride night. The month of June is recognized as Pride Month around the WNBA and serves as a primary platform for the league, as the team proudly celebrates diversity and equality.
DREAM TEAM Layshia Clarendon 26 | 6.14.17
This will be the fourth time the WNBA has acknowledged LGBT fans through Pride-esque signs courtside community get-togethers and selling merchandise where a proceed of funds go to community groups all across Atlanta. Since its founding in 1996, the league has had to fight horrendous stereotypes of all female athletes being lesbian. These fights left a large portion of the LGBT fan base ostracized as the team was forced to promote only a family-friendly, heteronormative image. As 2014 rolled around, the entire nation was gearing up to fight for marriage equality and the WNBA felt it was time to officially get on board. League president Laurel J. Richie decided to launch WNBA Pride for all teams across the nation. As research showed more than a fourth of WNBA season ticket holders identified as lesbian or bisexual, so this acknowledgement was long overdue.

DREAM TEAM, Continued
After receiving such a warm reception for a themed LGBT game night, the team has embraced their social media platforms and is taking the fight directly to the public. This move allows a way to continue to promote equality and all the obstacles facing the LGBT community, especially the current fight for transgender issues.
Within her letter, she even revealed her own struggles of being labeled as male simply because she does not conform to societal norms of what is expected for a female to wear. Clarendon happily rocks her gender-fluid, non-gender conformist style. She expressed experiences like this are only a taste of the ridicule transgender men and women face on a daily basis.
Atlanta Dream star player, Layshia Clarendon has been diligent in using her own voice to push for nationwide validation of transgender rights. Clarendon wrote a powerful letter last summer addressing her support for the transgender community.
“They are disproportionately at risk for homelessness, poverty, abuse, anxiety and depression,” she wrote. “As a community and as humans, we can’t just settle for gay marriage. We have the responsibility to fight for trans rights with tenacity.”
28 | 6.14.17
And that fight continues. Not only will Atlanta Dream’s Pride Night celebrate and memorialize all of the WNBA’s LGBT fans, but percentages of proceeds will be donated to some of Atlanta’s hard-working LGBT philanthropy organizations. The team also has a few, fun surprises in store for the audience other than what is sure to be a diabolical matchup against Chicago Sky. LGBT Pride Night at the Atlanta Dream takes place Friday, June 23 with a game against the Chicago Sky. For tickets and information, visit dream.wnba.com.

AS MAMMA MIA! HITS ATLANTA, HERE ARE OUR 10 GAYEST BROADWAY MUSICALS. EVER.
BROADWAY BABIES BY MIKE FLEMING MAMMA MIA! This inspiration for this week’s article runs through June 18 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Start with a typical het wedding, add the bride’s crazy mother. Now mix in the mother’s crazy friends. Now add three men, any of whom could be the bride’s biological father she has never met. Throw in all the best songs by ABBA, and you got a big gay mess on your hands. foxtheatre.org
WICKED As if The Wizard of Oz wasn’t gay enough with its cast of outsiders fighting over a pair of shoes. Go back to the witchy prequel with two Joan-v-Bette sisters and a score rich with handsdown diva moments, and you got the gayest non-gay musical of the bunch.
THE PRODUCERS Chauncey Miles, a self-hating gay burlesque actor, finds love with a much younger man. This stellar drama has music, drag, nudity and a story that will remind pride theatergoers of the rough road paved by generations who came before.

cal. Featuring a team of kickass drag Angels and diva-licious footwear by Gregg Barnes, Kinky Boots is the perfect way to get the party going this pride weekend.
AVENUE Q This long-running hit isn’t quite a “gay play,” but the journey to self acceptance by the musical’s closeted gay Republican puppet Rod (who nervously sings of a never-seen girlfriend who lives in Canada) is worth a major shout-out.
THE BOOK OF MORMON LGBT themes are not at the forefront of The Book of Mormon, but the gay Mormon tap number “Turn It Off” stops the show every time!
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH This rock musical follows a fictional rock band, The Angry Inch fronted by an East German transgender singer, Hedwig. The text is by John Cameron Mitchell, and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask.
by Jonathan Larson and based on Puccini’s opera La bohème, Rent tells the story of a group of broke young artists and musicians including gay and lesbian characters struggling to survive and create in New York City’s Lower East Side in Alphabet City, with HIV/ AIDS as a significant backdrop to the storyline. The song “Seasons of Love” is a classic. Larsen died suddenly the night before its off-Broadway premiere.
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES Without question La Cage Aux Folles, a record-breaking Tony Awards winner, ranks as the all-time leader of LGBT productions. Given that there were gay main characters, the music and lyrics were penned by a gay composer Jerry Herman and the book written by Harvey Fierstein who is also gay, there is no question La Cage deserves the top spot. Moreover, La Cage gives us the song “I Am What I Am,” which took on a life of its own and became an unofficial gay anthem.

Nice gets on my nerves. But I do enjoy people who aren’t flaming cunts. So I aim to be less of a cunt too, but how can I accomplish this? Sometimes I just shut up. Sometimes I listen. Sometimes I make a point that isn’t bitchy or pointed but is helpful and informative. Sometimes I laugh at another person’s joke and don’t try to top it with my own humorous insight. More often than not, I stand there, breathing, making deep eye contact, and listen. And voila! I am now 11.17% less of a flaming cunt.
THE IMMACULATE CORRECTION
DID YOU NOTICE HOW I DID THIS WITHOUT any references to scripture or spirituality or Oprah? This is what I call self-improvement in the post-moral era. If you want to get all post-graduate on a bitch, I would say it’s a combination of Kant’s Categorical Imperative and Audrey Hepburn’s emphaticalism. Both are philosophies that involve the study of morals, but are not moral systems in themselves. In the post-moral era, I look at what I want people around me to be, and then I look at how they might accomplish that, and I apply it to my own existential reality. Then I manifest praxis. I went to college.
BY SCOTT KING
YOUR GUIDE TO SELF-IMPROVEMENT IN A POST-MORAL WORLD DO YOU LIKE ME? Do you love me? Do you ... want to be near me? It doesn’t matter. If you cannot answer yes to all three of these questions about yourself, Lady Mary, you in danger gurl. Oops! I signed the wrong name.
YOU DON’T REALIZE IT AT THE TIME, BUT college is the beginning of adult life. I made friends for life in college. Our lives were suddenly our own and we were navigating that together. My friends saw a spark in me and I in them, and that’s probably why we have survived all existential realities and turmoil. But some not. Because either I or they were flaming cunts who just didn’t get it in the moment. I or they did things that moral systems would call immoral. But that wasn’t the problem. It was the lack of self-awareness, post morality. That’s where we got into trouble.
Sometimes I am a Lady Mary, but I am not always gracious with my sharp tongue and my circumstantial privilege. And I don’t like it.
If you do something to harm someone, apologize, and then correct the behavior that caused the problem or was the problem. Pretty sure that Rather than curling up into a sedentary ball of self-loathing (bad for the advice is congruent with most moralities, except hips), I analyze. Why am I acting that way? What are the alternatives? Machiavellianism. And Nietzsche. Nietzsche How do other people act? How do other people react to my behavior? stands alone, y’all. What is the behavior and demeanor of the people whom I admit and crave to be near? I am not a Machiavellian. Nor am I total top like MAKE A LIST OF YOUR 10 FAVORITE PEOPLE WHOSE COMPANY YOU relish. PRELUDE TO A STAR BY MIKE FLEMING
GAY ATLANTA’S OWN J TYLER DEBUTS FULL EP AND CHATS WITH US ABOUT MUSIC FROM HIS HEART. When local rapper J Tyler hits Hard Rock Café on Saturday, it may be his new CD’s debut, but to those of us in gay Atlanta, it’s certainly not our first introduction to the prolific performing artist. Whether you’ve caught his performances at venues around town, caught wind of his music via gay Atlanta media, heard him backing other artists including LGBT Atlanta singer Alyssa Brooks, or saw his viral videos, this outand-proud young gay man has been 40 | 6.14.17
turning heads and catching praise for a while now. That’s what makes the new EP Prelude, featuring original tracks that J Tyler tells David Atlanta come from his heart, so exciting: We go into it already loving him. The cutie with the talent lands at Hard Rock for part celebration, part concert with performances by special guest artists James Shealy, Erick Nathan,
and Shayna Marcela Garcia. But not before he sits down with us to preview the show, the EP, and what makes our Atlanta guy tick. How would you describe your music and your career up to this point? I got my “start” by being a dumb kid just wanting to be a rapper. I started posting remixes on YouTube and got noticed by people like Chris Crocker, Detox from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Perez Hilton and Ross Matthews.
davidatlanta.com | 41
PRELUDE, Continued
Do you think being gay makes a difference as an artist? I’m not just some little gay kid, you know? I wish more people would see that. It’s funny because I was just having this conversation with Adam Lambert. I sent him my EP to listen to, and we started talking about how being gay is what gives me edge. But if that’s what gives me edge, then I’m not doing my job as an artist. What can we expect from the debut EP? I wanted to put something out that would tell somebody exactly who I am. Each song on Prelude tells a different story from my heart. I’m just having fun and sharing heartbreak over here, and I know people can relate to that. Tell us about the first single. My first single is called “Dance with Me.” It actually wasn’t even supposed to be on the EP. I thought I was through with the album until my manager/producer, Ryan Snow, called me up and said he had a beat that he can’t help but hear me on. He told me to listen and if I’m not feeling it, we’ll be done. After listening to it, I literally jumped right up and had an idea. I started writing immediately, then asked my label mate, James Shealy, to jump on the hook. We really made a summer anthem. If you tune in to Q100, you might hear this one playing! If fans could walk away from the EP with one message, what would it be? They will definitely understand me a lot more than they already do. You can only know so much about a person behind a computer, but if I can inspire at least one person with what I’m doing, then I can have all the validation in the world that I’m meant to do this. Prelude means so much to me. What’s next for you? Oh, you think I’m gonna stop with just a drop of an EP?! You haven’t seen the last of me. I’m featured on a couple of great Atlanta newcomers’ albums coming out soon. I’ve already written my next few bops. I haven’t been this involved in my music ever, and it’s such an indescribable feeling.
I gained momentum and started getting involved with my label, BSE. Now we’re at the beginning of having my own music. It’s exciting! Who are your biggest influences and heroes? In music, my first love was Shania Twain. Nobody would ever guess that, I don’t think. (laughs.) After I got into rap, I took influence from how Missy Elliot changed the game. Then, it was Nicki Minaj. In life, I would definitely say that my dad is my hero. He’s such a country bumpkin, but he’s always by my side, supporting me, no matter what. How much, if any, has living in Atlanta influenced your work? Oh wow. Yeah, I’m not the same little kid that moved to Atlanta, thinking I was going to be somebody fast. My experience in the city has humbled me so much. It really fueled the drive that I already had to go after what I love. 42 | 6.14.17
What’s your dream for the future? Honestly, I’ve already reached my dream. I’m doing what I love. I wasn’t saying I wanted to get rich by doing music as a kid. I said I wanted to do music, and that’s what I’m doing. But like I said, my time is now. Anything you’d like to say to gay Atlanta before your June 17 event? Thank you. Just thank you. I’ve never been so grateful to have such support. I’m honored to be able to represent the LGBTQ community with my dream. This CD release concert is just the first of many shows like this. But wouldn’t it be cool to say you were there when? (laughs.) J Tyler’s debut EP Prelude will be available on all digital markets on June 17. Visit jtylermusic.com and facebook.com/ jtylermusic. The Prelude Concert takes place Saturday, June 17, 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Café Atlanta, 215 Peachtree St. NE.

Letting your imagination run away with you creates worst-case scenarios, which can cause you to act in ways that might ruin your friendship – and your chances. The only way to find out is ask what the sex meant to him. Maybe he’s not ready, or maybe he’s just as nervous as you about appearing needy. Either way, be ready to accept his answer. Clear the air so you can keep the friend.
Hey, Daddy!
HEY,
DADDY! ONE-SIDED LOVE Hey, Daddy! The teammate I’ve always had a crush on found out I’m gay, and long story short we had sex. We were already good friends with lots in common, so now I keep daydreaming about us together. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but then again, he is making too little of a deal out of it. He avoids being within a foot of me when around the other guys on our team. It’s killing me.
I love my husband, but lack of excitement has led me to stray several times. These detours never mattered until a recent hookup flooded over into a weekly thing. The mutual plan was to keep it No Strings Attached, but the more we got together, the more I realized that this guy is special to me. Then one night I texted, and he was on a date. Now he’s not responding at all. I get that this is a situation that I shouldn’t be in at all, but my heart just wants him back in my life.
Desire I Can’t Kick Dear DICK: You’re married. He’s dating. The relationship is over. He knows it. You don’t. One-sided breakups suck, but expecting to have your cake and eat it too is why you’re here in the first place. You want to listen to your heart. Cool: Your heart wants romance. You’re missing emotional connection. Step one: Get counseling to fix your marriage, or get single so you have something to offer.
Really Over Men And Need Commitment Enormously Dear ROMANCE: Every one of us has been in a one-sided romance, but you’re jumping the gun on yours. There’s not enough information to go down the spiral of gloom. Your internal drama comes from sitting in the dark. Turn on the lights.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):
Feeling disconnected can tempt you to try too hard to fit in. You’re too individualistic to conform and your efforts at charm can be too assertive. Focus on your own work and well-being. The trick to fitting in is not to worry about it.
Your words could be as shocking to you as they are to others, disrupting personal and professional relationships. That may seem to create problems, but it’s really just identifying trouble that’s already there. With patience and responsibility, solutions can come in a few weeks.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):
Setbacks or cutbacks at work would make anyone nervous, but you’ll be OK, even if that means working a bit harder. Stress and worry are your biggest dangers. Meditate and take some selfindulgent downtime to relax.
Your natural erotic charisma is running higher than usual. With correct prophylaxis there’s nothing wrong with cheap thrills, but how cheap do you want to be? What really matters to you? Unsatisfying efforts at pleasure will just leave you cranky and argumentative.
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):
You may be a little too gorgeous for your own good, and simple flirtation can easily be taken as a lot more landing you on either side of unwanted sexual attentions. Easy does it, Tiger!
One can be too inclusive. Rather than trying to expand your family or community, focus on your identity and your own roots. Dig up family secrets and learn better how those have shaped the way you communicate with others.
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):
Negotiating private space with your roommate can be hard, even more so with your partner. Some time alone can give you space to find a solution. It’s not about negating your ego, but getting it in balance.
Feeling underappreciated at work at least means you’re probably not slacking. Keep up the good work. They’ll notice in time. In the meantime, balance your travails with some fun escapes. Staying mentally and physically fit is first priority.
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):
Don’t let meditation slide into future tripping. Focus on whatever creative efforts in the present can make the future more of what you want it to be. Efforts at being sexy and provocative can come off as just bitchy and horny.
Trying to shake up the routine at work with new ideas probably creates more problems than it solves and could cause serious accidents. Feeling like a misfit among co-workers will pass. Save your complaints and outbursts for friends where they won’t have serious repercussions.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):
Spiritual and personal insights are probably best kept to yourself or just shared with a close friend. Sharing them too widely in efforts to help others will likely be misunderstood and backfire. Be alert and those new ideas could point to great opportunities.
Knowing where you come from is useless if you don’t use that knowledge to move forward. Feeling a bit lost is the first step in finding yourself. Let your work and ambitions be your compass.

bitch session Shaming me and passing judgment say more about you than they do about me. Your bullshit is rejected!
Is that Bitmoji really what you think you look like? Someone with eyes needs to build you a new one.
Bitch, your insults will not steal my shine!
SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
That booty so good, I don’t care you hollered out some other bitch’s name.
Atlanta would be Mecca if I was attracted to stereotypical bearded fat bottom boys in graphic tees.
When you’re in the middle of texting and think, this is exactly why I don’t talk to you anymore.
When it comes to you, I have been the definition of stupid: Knowing the truth, seeing evidence of the truth, and still believing the lie.
You should give a fuck. You really should, but only about things that set your soul on fire. Save your fucks.
Hear ye, hear ye. I’m not going to let you bar flies ever again make me forget that I deserve to be happy.
The truth is the more intimately you know someone, the more clearly you see their flaws. Love is only love if you choose to work with it.
