DA: Did you cringe when you thought about the verbal faux pas that you had with the word condone instead of conduct? KD: I did cringe, but I will say this; they edited my speech, although I did say the wrong word in the wrong spot. Those two condones were in two different parts of my speech. They edited it to make them be closer together. It made me look like a real dumb-dumb. DA: Yeah, editing has been a real issue this year. Did you feel like you were fairly editing in the show? KD: The editing was horrible this year. I don’t care about anybody’s feelings, or what they say about it. I do feel like the editing was horrible. But you know what, I charge it to the game because we put ourselves in this position for them to do whatever they want with the footage. Damn our feelings. Damn whatever America may think about us. • Don’t give up before the miracle happens. You probably don’t know how many people come to me for couple’s counseling that are ready to throw in the towel. In most of these relationships I have successfully convinced them to evaluate “what is working well” versus “what they feel could be working better.” Often the smallest things about our mate irritate us. You knew he scratched his butt in pubic when you met and married him and giving up on him before he changes his butt scratching tendencies is unfair. Remember we vow to have and hold him or her, through good and bad, riches and poor, sickness and in health, until death do you part. Clearly, this isn’t an excuse to stay in an unhealthy marriage, but just a reminder that marriage is a commitment that we can’t give up on before the miracle happens. • Don’t have unrealistic expectations. Many relationships fail due to unrealistic expectations from one or both individuals. Don’t expect your spouse to be superman. If your spouse had money management issues when you married him or her, 9 times out 10 he or she still has money management problems and expecting him to all of sudden be able to save money for a new home together without teaching him how to budget and giving him time to apply the new skill is unrealistic. Redirecting your energy on helping him become more financially responsible is a better use of your time, and just might get you that house you’re dreaming about.
O
n April 28, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments and began deliberations on marriage equality, which has huge implications for the LGBTQI community. Because marriage equality is so important to our readers, the next few columns leading up to the landmark decision will focus on same-sex relationships. Same sex couples have the same relationship goals as “straight” people. Maintaining a healthy relationship is critical considering the stunts being pulled today. Marriage has always been the natural course for two people that love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. All marriages experience things that make absolutely no sense. Our learned response has been to focus on our differences instead of our similarities. The following 5 tips are recommended building blocks for successful same-sex marriages: • Have lots of physical contact. There are so many ways to share a sexual act with your spouse without actual penetration. Explore these options, and what works best for your relationship. The goal here is the physical contact, not the actual act of having sex. Relationships that thrive have lots of physical contact, and the spouse is able to communicate with clear words and actions, how they want to be pleased. Remember, we teach people how to love us.
24 | 6.3.15
• Don’t expect your spouse to make you happy. After your ceremony your happiness level will eventually return to its pre-marriage baseline. If you were unhappy and depressed prior to marriage, you will probably be unhappy and depressed after marriage (especially if you haven’t done anything to address the depression). It’s not fair to transfer unto your spouse your depression, or negative attitude with the hopes that he will join you in misery or make you happy. Happiness lies with you and expecting your husband or wife to change that is unrealistic. • Learn how to forgive. In the movie The Tale of Despereaux there is a quote that I believe is profound that says very simply, “There is one emotion that is stronger than fear, and that is forgiveness.” Forgiveness requires hope. Having hope believes that despite the challenges you may face in your marriage, being able to forgive ensures that you’ll get past it. Pride has ruined many marriages. Don’t let your big head cause you to lose the man or women of your dreams. Stay tuned next month for more relationship tips as we approach marriage equality. Dr. Warrick
For 15 years I drew caricatures of sick kids at Scottish Rite. That’s probably what I’ll be doing in the future, drawing for kids. Especially after I retire. ou’ve undoubtedly seen his editorial cartoons in the Atlanta Journal Constitution over the past 20 years. They satirize political and cultural viewpoints. They’re funny while at the same time intended to make you think. Mike Luckovich has also been a strong supporter for gay rights through the years, with a good number of his cartoons pointing out the backwards injustice towards same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. We’re very happy to have an opportunity to highlight Mike’s kind heart and irreverent Pulitzer Prize winning cartooning.

25 Years with Your P.A.L.S. Celebrating the Bond of Pets and People by Jonathan Bugg “It is the mission of Pets Are Loving Support, Inc. to provide ongoing care and support to pets of Atlanta area persons living with critical illnesses, disabilities, and the elderly. With this help, pets and owners may remain together to share the healing power of love and companionship which flows from the humananimal bond.” This mission statement has been standing strong for 25 immense years! P.A.L.S., a word that is heard often by many humans, but barely thought about twice. For the many individuals hearing the word “P.A.L.S.”, one thought comes to mind quickly….our furry and loving best friends. In Atlanta and the surrounding areas, P.A.L.S. is much more than just a word; it is the support for those living with critical illnesses, disabilities, and the elderly.
Bubba D’ Licious is often on hand at the P.A.L.S. monthly themed Bingo.
This year, P.A.L.S. will be celebrating their 25th anniversary. The celebration is to thank the community for its on going support shown during the past 25 years and the support that will be given in the future. The celeThemes for the bration will include Bingo range from County a silent auction and Fair Bingo to a few of the prizes 80s Bingo. that will be given away include: a week stay in Puerto Rico, a bed and breakfast stay in Savannah, Georgia, a trip to Nashville, TN, gym memberships and much more.
P.A.L.S. an acronym for Pets Are Loving Support was founded in 1990 by two Atlanta business-women, Dr. Susan Wynn, a veterinarian, and Dr. Margaret Schulte, an educator. These two phenomenal women met while doing volunteer work for Project Open Hand. Both Dr. Wynn and Dr. Schulte shared two interests, working with patients living with AIDS, and they were avid animal lovers. These two women recognized immediately the important bond that humans and pets shared closely. The love and support that animals gave to those living with AIDS was extremely important. During the 80s and early 90s, many individuals living with AIDS lost the support and contact of family, friends and even their financial stability such as: jobs, homes and savings. This problem needed immediate attention. So, Wynn and Schulte began to collect food for pets. From this great deed, P.A.L.S. was started. The celebration for P.A.L.S. 25th Anniversary is set for Sunday, June 7 at Park Tavern located at 500 10th St NE Corner of 10th The future plans and goals for P.A.L.S. is to “expand the services of- and Monroe. Playtime for the East Point Possums by Jeffery Silvey
U
sually when you see a possum, it’s because they’ve just run out in front of your car at night and you have to swerve to miss them. With the East Point Possums you find yourself wanting to crash right into them, and right into the fun. The East Point Possums are a group of four friends from Atlanta that have taken a big drag queen extravaganza and turned it into an even bigger fundraiser event. In 1998 Rick Westbrook, John Jeffrey, Chesley Thurman, and Chuck Jenkins each adopted drag personas and began lip-syncing in a backyard to raise money for different charities. Several years, a change to a bigger venue, and thousands of donated dollars later, the extravaganza continues. It has become a fun summer event for gay and lesbian couples, as well as straight families and children. This year people, gay and straight, will be gathering to help the Possums raise money for Lost-N-Found Youth. Rick Westbrook, who goes by the drag name Shinitta Lott, is not only the self proclaimed “Matriarch of the Possum Clan,” but he is also a founder and executive director of Lost-N-Found. He hopes this year’s event exceeds last year, where they managed to raise over $25,000 in a span of a few hours for Lost-N-Found.

Admission to the East Point Possum Show is free and they sell drink tickets, five for $20, but most of the money raised, including last year’s lump sum, comes from the tips the performers get from the audience members. “Most of the money was sweaty 1s and 5s from the entertainers,” joked Westbrook. All jokes aside, Westbrook understands the large opportunity the Possums have with what is considered the largest drag show in the southeast. “[Atlanta Gay] Pride has more people, but we have more drag queens and kings,” said Westbrook. “It’s an eclectic mix of veteran and new queens. Some wives show up and bring their husbands in a dress and tell us to have fun.” Among the nearly 30 scheduled
acts are Atlanta’s Edie Cheezburger, Jaye Lish, and the Armorettes. This drag extravaganza is a representation of how far the Possums and their causes have come. When they first filed for a permit for the event years ago, they described it to city officials as a “Shakespearean variety show,” which makes perfect sense. Shakespeare was the one who wrote, “To be or not to be,” and these Possums prove that it’s definitely better to just be. The East Point Possums Show will be Saturday, June 13 from 7 until 11 p.m. on the Commons at Downtown East Point. For more information please visit eastpointpossums.com.

DA: I’m glad everyone could agree that bigger is better in this case. How did you convince the studio to see it your way? RB: Once it was all together and we were on camera. It just all came together – the costume, the makeup, everything. And it just needed a little more. She’s quite still as a character, and I think (the hair)… it says a lot! (Laughs) It was the stronger choice! That’s how we convinced them. DA: What did it feel like on top of your head? RB: It felt… good! I mean, it was heavy. It would move a lot too. Oh my goodness. It was constantly shifting because it was so big, and if I was waiting around, it would start to, like, deteriorate. Sarah Love, the hair designer on the film, did a brilliant job, because it was a lot. DA: And how about all those flamboyant costumes you wore? How much fun was it to play dress up? I mean, leopard pants!

RB: My leopard pants! And Neoprene, which is an interesting fabric. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it... DA: What’s it like wearing Neoprene? RB: It’s weirdly comfortable. A bit like a wetsuit. But yeah – it was a lot of fun. She’s a delectably delicious bad villainous. DA: Did you feel like a drag queen on set? RB: (Laughs) The shoes are pretty drag-ish. The shoes were major. They were about 5-inch pumps. Maaajor!

ose Byrne is up to no good again. After driving Kristen Wiig further into cupcake-consuming meltdown mode during 2011’s Bridesmaids, the Australian actress goes full-on diva in Spy, which reunites her with director Paul Feig and co-star Melissa McCarthy. As McCarthy’s dead-serious, fashion-challenged Spy foe, Byrne – also known for roles in Neighbors, Damages and the X-Men movies – stars as the wickedly divine Raina Boyanov.
DA: Have you had a lot of wig experience prior to this movie? RB: A little bit here and there. It actually wasn’t a wig; it was a piece. It was all my hair, and at the back she had a piece and then that had a big, long tail coming down. I have kind of big hair, so it was a bit of both.
DA: Between this movie and Bridesmaids, you really know how to play up the diva role. RB: I see it doing a few things. Paul Feig just breaks every convention, and he’s such a lover of women and continues to redefine gender roles in film. You see it in his films, which are really big films with big audiences that are entertaining and appealing. Now, he’s putting Melissa, his muse, in the lead, and the lead antagonist is my character, who is also a woman. What other big films are doing that with budgets of this scale? Not many, if any, is the answer. So, I take my hat off to him for how much he’s done in the business in a very significant way. DA: You co-founded an all-female production company called The Dollhouse Creative, and you’ve starred in several films that pass the Bechdel Test. Why are films like Spy, films that close the RB: I would be honored to do something gender gap, important? like that. It did not get well received. DA: I did, and I didn’t wanna bring those up. But since you did... RB: (Laughs) No plans yet, put it that way.

I mean, I just watched all of Transparent in a day and a half. It was the most entertaining and moving piece of work I’ve seen in years. I just thought it was beautiful and brilliant. DA: Though you’ve played lesbian on the Australian TV show Fallen Angels, you’ve never actually been lesbian on the big screen. advice
The next time someone accuses you of talking like a little girl, GASP, you should reply, “That’s silly, sweetie. It’s simply selfexpression,” along with three snaps and a tongue thrust. Dear Dom, OMG, I think I’m bisexual. I kissed a girl and I liked it. I want to go all the way. But, I’ve never been with a woman and vaginas are kind of scary. I need to find out before I get old. What should I do? Knowing A Truthful Youth Ms. Perry wasn’t just singing a song. Right, KATY? Sexuality is a fluid thing; like a river, it has many bends. No pun intended. Think of a vagina as a welcoming tunnel of love along the riverway. Pun totally intended.
Dear Dom,
Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom,
Eurotophobia is the fear of female genitalia. The best way to overcome any phobia is to acknowledge it. Yet, this fear is deeply rooted in the human pysche. The ancient Hindu and Shinto religions have folktales of vagina dentata, female organs with teeth, or sharp-fanged demons dwelling within them, meant to castrate invading males. Medically, embryonic dermoid cysts of the ovaries will often contain actual teeth. If the cyst ruptures, they can migrate through the vagina, bringing toothy truthfulness to the myths. Sometimes, reality really does bite. Dear Dom, My nipples are boring. All these dudes talk about how their tits are “hardwired” to their cocks. Mine do nothing for me. One guy says he can even have an orgasm just by having his nipples stimulated. What am I missing?
Why do gay men talk so swishy? Every time I open my mouth, rainbows & rose petals come flying out. Is it in Just Understanding Guy Sensitivities our genes or something we learn? Soon enough, JUGS, your teats will be udderly delightful. Moo. “Sounding gay is not a disorder.” Speaking scientifically, the “gay lisp” doesn’t exist. A true frontal lisp makes “sink” sound as “think.” A true lateral lisp sounds like Sid the sloth in “Ice Age.” Dom Advice columnist Dominic has been there and done that “The stereotypes about gay men speech follows the stereotypes with most everything. Working toward goals you share with others could bring you closer together as friends and lovers. The whole is definitely more than the sum of the parts. You’re likely to produce better results as a group or partnership than you would have otherwise.
This week you might face a task that seems as workable as emptying the ocean with a teacup. But with help from others, you will not only be able to handle it but also produce exceptional results. Physically, you’re likely to feel full of strength and stamina.
The desire to travel, perhaps to visit a close friend, may come up this week. You may put a lot of energy into exploring the possibilities. You might also want to travel to places where you can get some artistic inspiration for creative projects.
Expect a lot of activity in your home this week. A group, perhaps a large one, hosted by you or a family member could meet there and provoke stimulating conversations. You could get caught up in the energy if you are aware of your feelings.
The desire to meet with a romantic partner and look and feel your best could give rise to a lot of short journeys in your area. Perhaps you will want to work out, buy some new clothes, or get a haircut. This might be a good idea. Passions promise to run high.
It’s time to stop acting like you think others want to see you act. The planetary configuration confirms that it’s time to express yourself - your emotions, desires, and point of view - to take a firmer stand and define more clearly who you are to others and to yourself. 66 | 6.3.15
presented by
the armorettes
Your energy is high and your stamina particularly strong this week. Working out or playing sports could appeal to you now. Running or aerobics could offer valuable exercise and clear your head to allow for new ideas. You also should feel particularly passionate.
A reunion with a family member who has been away or out of touch could generate some powerful emotions. Memories could come flooding back, making you both nostalgic and maybe a bit angry. Take care to curb the latter. You don’t want to spoil your reunion.
Your mind is likely to be on travel. You might have to spend a lot of time running errands in the car. You could also be planning a long vacation, perhaps one centered on a group function or seminar of some sort. Relax at home this evening.
This week you might decide to put in some extra hours on the job or take on an extra project of some sort in order to bring in a little more money. Since you’re feeling strong and energetic enough to move mountains, you need to take care not to overexert yourself.
Passion and determination mark this week. Your energy should be high, and you should feel strong and powerful. This is the perfect week to give whatever goals you’ve been trying to accomplish that one last push toward completion.
Your inner power and awareness should be acute this week. Some intense dreams and revelations could come from deep within, allowing you to release old traumas and phobias, and enabling you to move ahead with more confidence. Physical energy is high. Use it!

Bitch
S E S S I O N Why is it northerners think they’re so smart? Us southern boys just don’t give a fuck. Sorry, but I gotta go to work! Have you ever taken a second to look at your ex and think quietly to yourself “Was I drunk our entire relationship?”
The shit you hear about me might be true; then again, it could be as fake as the slut who told you.
I don’t play “Hard to get.” I play “Never going to happen.”

Once a whore, always a whore.
Why yes, Mary, your eye roll is either a sign of you lying or being passive aggressive. #BITCHBOY
Sure is funny how you young guys love us as long as we’re spending money on you and giving you booze! Mommy and Daddy’s money will run out.
Don’t waste your time talking to my face when you’ve used all you’re energy talking behind my back!
