GENTLEMEN,

START YOUR by Mike Fleming

ARMORETTES TURN IT OUT FOR EASTER DRAG RACES WHILE TURNING YET ANOTHER PAGE IN THEIR 37-YEAR CHARITABLE PLAYBOOK.

L

ook out. Here comes Holiday Homo again, hopping down the bunny trail to grab spring’s first holiday weekend and shake it up with more gay parties and special events in Atlanta than you can shake your stick at.

You probably already know that Easter Sunday means the annual Drag Races with the Armorettes. For years (and years!), the daydrinking plus carnival-style games with a drag twist have been a local gay tradition. “One of our goals with the Drag races has always been to bring to community together as one,” says Lori Divine, Armorettes queen and spokesperson. “Easter Drag Races is the season’s kickoff event to hot boys in shorts and tanks, community involvement and charity fundraising at its finest. … everyone comes together as a family to support each other, kinda like a big gay family reunion.” New games in the mix for 2016 include “Gang Bang” alongside usual favorites, as well as shots for sale by the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, hot boys auctioning off their underwear, and more. The event returns this year to Burkhart’s, much to the delight of its yearly regular patrons. It also marks a return to the bar for the Armorettes weekly Sunday shows. That’s where we start our interview. Divine offers updates on Drag Races, the campy queens with the hearts of gold enter their next era raising funds against HIV/AIDS. 20 | 3.23.16

ENGINES So you’re back at Burkhart’s! How did that come about? We have tried holding the drag races at other venues, and it just wasn’t the same. We reached out to Palmer and Mary [Marsh, owners of Burkhart’s] about bringing the races “home.” In discussing the move with them, it came up about bringing the group home to Burkhart’s. We discussed it as a group and decided it would in the best interest of the group and the community to bring the races and the Armorettes back to Burkhart’s. The Armorettes have a long and storied history in gay Atlanta. What do they mean to you? To me, this group is a sign of hope within our community. There was a time that members of the LGBTQ community were dying from some unknown disease. Then it was given a name: AIDS. … People were losing their jobs because ignorance … people were going hungry, becoming homeless, dying alone. Then came the Armorettes. This camp drag comedy show started raising money to help those who needed it. They pushed for education, awareness and support. They gave hope to those who had lost it, gave hope to the community. Through laughter and love, the Armorettes have tried to make our community a better place.

photos: Russ Youngblood

What’s the next phase look like for the Armorettes?

Any parting words to your Easter fan base?

We just celebrated our 37th year as a troupe, and we hope to be around another 37 years. We are changing up a little with the times. In the early years most of the girls had mustaches and balloon boobs. Now more of the troupe leans toward glam-camp. We will always put laughter first and foremost, because the group has always tried to be a light in the dark times that surround the community.

I would like to issue a challenge to everyone in our community. Join us in this fight against HIV and AIDS Join us to share hope with those that have hit hard tines. If each one of us would stop every day and ask ourselves, who can I help today? We won’t be able to change everything and reach everyone overnight, but we can start one person at a time.

What are y’all up to outside Sunday shows and monthly Heretic shows?

We look forward to seeing everyone at Drag Races. Bring a friend, Bring a dollar or two for charity, and most of all bring your smile! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives, We love you all!

We have been busy, busy, busy. We have a large following all over the southeast and we have been doing at least two events out of town every month. … We are Atlanta based and do the majority of our work here but we travel a lot and try to reach as many as we can to raise awareness, give support and fund as much as we can in this fight against HIV and AIDS….

Easter Drag Races with the Armorettes takes place on Sunday, March 27 at Burkhart’s, 1492 Piedmont Ave. NE. Drinking begins and contest signups, 2 p.m. Games, 3 p.m. Event followed immediately by a suped up edition of the Armorettes show inside, then into the night with the Tossed Salad show. Meet Atlanta’s ‘Property Gays’ by Shannon Jenkins

photos: Courtesy Josh and Joey Bolton-Rogers

THIS ATLANTA COUPLE ISN’T AFRAID OF COMMITMENT. HERE’S HOW THAT QUALITY TOOK THEM FROM LOVE TO MARRIAGE TO FLIPPING HOUSES AND BEYOND.

I

n less than three years, Josh and Joey Bolton-Rogers fell in love, got married, purchased real estate, and began the process to adopt their first child. The Grant Park couple also care for three dogs. If anything, they thrive on major undertakings, and they plan to turn that skill into a career. Their fast-paced lives began when they met in July 2013. Until now, most people thought they met in the produce section of Whole Foods, but they reveal to us that they really discovered one another on Grindr. “He messaged me on a Thursday, and we chatted for most of the night,” Joey tells David Atlanta. “He invited me over that Saturday to watch a movie. Before I left, he picked me up and kissed me against the door. I walked to the car and knew this was the man I was going to marry.”

“I have this idea of having the baby strapped to me while I’m sketching out drawings and looking at homes and making sure contractors are doing what they’re supposed to do,” Joey says.

home. All have been within a mile and a half of one another in Grant Park. When looking for the perfect house, the self-anointed “Property Gays” consider several factors. “I first look at the property’s location,” Josh says. “Atlanta’s housing market is incredibly competitive these days, so identifying a hidden gem in a transitional neighborhood is critical. The homes that most appeal to me have dramatic elements (such as) high ceilings and original details.”

With the cost of adoption looming, the couple knew they had to raise money quickly. They had made several improvements to the home Josh already owned. Armed with positive feedback about their style—which Josh describes as eclectic, rustic and industrial chic—they put their When looking for the right property, the home on the market hoping it would be couple also enlists the help of Josh’s bropopular with buyers. ker, Jude Rasmus. “I was so nervous about the entire process,” Joey admits now. “(But) within two days of listing that home, we had multiple offers. It was the most amazing and addicting experience.”

“She helps us come back down to reality when we are too emotional in the process,” Joey says. “We go shopping and drink lots of wine. She’s a big part of this, too.”

Once they sold their first home in April Although their recent real estate ventures On August 30, 2014, the couple did marry. 2015, the couple then flipped and sold a have brought success, flipping houses has Early the following year, they began dis- second home in September of the same also tested the couple. year and in October purchased a third cussing adoption. 24 | 3.23.16

“The challenging part is leaving the beautiful thing we created,” Josh offers. “It also puts some stress on our relationship at times. We come out stronger on the other end of it, but we definitely have moments where a door is slammed or someone runs off.” “I’m very OCD, and I’m very deliberate in everything I do,” Joey adds. “I do things by the book, and Josh is more carefree. We pack up the house, and he’s throwing things in boxes, and I like to make sure boxes are labeled. That definitely gives me a lot of anxiety.” Having full-time jobs adds another stressful component. Joey is a new vehicle delivery coordinator for Porsche Cars North America, and Josh is a real estate agent and credit strategist for an industrial supply company. “Our goal ultimately is to do this full time,” Josh says. “We probably need two or three more flips, and we can call this our profession.” Once they have gone full time and built up their resumes, Joey and Josh would love to have their own show on HGTV. out actors changing television

by Gary L. Day

GAY ACTORS IN AND OUT OF GAY ROLES KEEP PEOPLE’S LIVING ROOMS GAY THROUGH THE SMALL SCREEN It has been said that we are in new golden age of television. But when it comes to gay character visibility, we’re in something of a slump. In contrast, times are good for openly gay actors on TV.

JOHN BARROWMAN first leapt to TV fame on BBC’s Doctor Who, playing the omnisexual Captain Jack. He proved popular enough to spin off in his own series Torchwood, and then Barrowman landed a regular gig as dastardly Malcolm Merlyn on the CW’s Arrow. On the convention circuit, Barrowman often delights fans with stunts like kissing male co-stars on the lips or donning drag, making both girls and boys squeal and cheer.

Just about everywhere we turn, another actor on some show we’re watching turns up gay. They’re not playing gay, but they are open, their faces are on TV, and we take it as a good sign I n the culture war for gay rights. Here are our Top 10 most visible openly gay actors working on scripted TV today. JESSE TYLER FERGUSON has been a conscientious spokesperson for LGBT people since being catapulted to fame on Modern Family. Ferguson and his husband launched Tie The Knot, a bow tie charity in support of marriage equality. In 2013, the ACLU named the actor as its “celebrity ambassador for the LGBT community.”

JIM PARSONS is perhaps the most visible person on this list, being one of the stars of The Big Bang Theory, the No. 1 ranked sitcom in America. The show is widely syndicated and so popular that, at some points each day, it can appear on three different channels at once. That adds up to much more face time than anyone else. Parsons has won numerous awards, including four Emmys, one Golden Globe, a People’s Choice Award, and two SAG Awards. 28 | 3.23.16

BD WONG first gained fame on Broadway crossdressing opposite John Lithgow in M. Butterfly. His amazingly thick resume in movies and television includes his long tenure as Dr. George Huang in the Law & Order franchise. His current gig is as the delightfully evil Dr. Hugo Strange on Gotham. Wong donates his time and resources to a number of LGBT and artsrelated charities.

WENTWORTH MILLER first came to our attention as the star of Prison Break, which earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor. He bounced around a bit after that, until signing on to play Captain Cold on The Flash, then spinning the character off in Legends of Tomorrow. The actor is involved with HRC and the ManKind Project.

GUILLERMO DIAZ was born in New Jersey of Cuban decent. He started acting in 1994 and has appeared in dozens of movies that no one has heard of, as well as a guest star everywhere on TV. He finally got a regular gig that is garnering him some attention starting last year as Huck on Scandal.

VICTOR GARBER’s resume is chock-full of appearances in familiar properties, including Alias, Titanic, Milk, Legally Blonde and Frasier. Currently he costars with Wentworth Miller as half of the dual hero Firestorm in Legends of Tomorrow. He is a charming and dignified presence who sings and dances as well.

IAN MCKELLAN AND DEREK JACOBI share a listing because they co-star together in the British sitcom Vicious, shown in Atlanta on GPB. Sir Ian we know, of course, from major Hollywood film franchises, as Gandalf and Magneto. Sir Derek works primarily on the British stage but does occasionally show up on the small screen, notably as The Master on Doctor Who. McKellan is co-founder of Stonewall, a British gay rights organization, and supports other LGBT non-profits. Jacobi was a Grand Marshal of the 2015 New York Pride Parade. 30 | 3.23.16

TR KNIGHT is perhaps most well known for his time as George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy, or possibly for the acrimonious nature of his exit from that show, which coincides with accusations of homophobia and anti-gay slurs on set. He most recently appeared on the revived cult favorite The X-Files and will appear on NBC’s upcoming 11.22.63 about the Kennedy Assassination.

BONUSES: Our list of scripted series not due for cancellation didn’t leave room for some actors who deserve a nod. Queer actor Alan Cumming of The Good Wife is due for cancellation, awards show and cameo darlings Sean Hayes and Neil Patrick Harris are always popping up, Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon keep it gay on cable news, and guys like Tim Gunn of Project Runway put the G in LGBT reality TV. We are indeed everywhere.

SIMPLEST GAY BAR RULES EVER

by Mike Fleming

AFTER YEARS OF FIELD WORK, A LOCAL GAY EXPERT LETS US IN ON CLUB ETIQUETTE THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW.

See also: Flailing cigarettes. “I’ve been burned so many times, I can’t even count,” our expert says.

“People want to have a good time, and that’s fine,” says our industry professional, who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s what we’re here for. But the key is remembering that other people are here with you, to respect that, and not to do things that mess with their experience.”

People are working. Don’t talk to the DJ. “People paid good money to see this guy do what he does, and he’s good at it,” says our bar veteran. “Distracting him affects the quality of everyone else’s experience.”

I

No means no. For some, your gayness was pent up at work all week, and for t’s Saturday night. You’re feeling yourself, your friends, you, playtime is for hooking up. But hear this: When you hit on a your outfit, and even better, you’re starting to feel your guy and he rebuffs you, take no for an answer. cocktails. Etiquette may not be the first thing you think of when you’re out for a good time, but it’s still something all Going back in for another try doesn’t ever help. It takes you from of us need to consider and heed, according to a veteran gay “not interested” to “creepy freak” fast, so move on. The next guy might see you differently. You’d know the venues on our expert’s resume, and you’d prob- Also, don’t over-engage and do tip your bartenders. You’re havably know his face or name if we shared them. But that informa- ing a party, but these guys are trying to earn a living. tion would muddy the waters. Our bar veteran says no matter who or where you are, these common-sense rules apply to everybody. Open a tab. Speaking of bartenders, if you’re going to buy more than one “It’s not rocket science,” he says, “but you’d be surprised how round, start a tab. Otherwise, people behind you and the baroften otherwise normal people take advantage or don’t think tender come to a stop each time you order, run the card and sign the receipt. This isn’t You Time, it’s everybody’s time, and when they get to the clubs.” you’re wasting it. Make room. Before you start maniacally twirling your glowsticks or flags, Wipe your sweat. make sure you have room. We know you’re rolling, and that’s There’s nothing worse than rubbing up against your brisfun for you, but the rest of us aren’t nearly as infatuated with tly, soaking wet, half-trimmed back. “If you’re going to take the sight as you, and definitely not enough to get smacked in the your shirt off on the dance floor, please use it to wipe up,” face with your toys. says our authority. 40 | 3.23.16

Check your marital disputes at the door. Nothing brings down the vibe like a married couple finally drunk enough to say what they’ve been repressing. “That’s nothing compared to what I put up with from you!” “Well if you leave your clothes on the floor again, I’m throwing them away!” No one wants to hear it, ladies. Take your drugs elsewhere. When you bring your party favors into the bar, you could ruin the whole night for everybody if the cops catch you. You also threaten the livelihood of the bar and its employees, and the manager on duty could go to jail along with you. “Not to mention the poor guys needing to pee while you do bumps behind a locked door,” says the professional. Take it to your car, or better yet, do it at home, where you’re the only one at risk. Do not cross a drag queen. We don’t mean cross her, as in make her mad, though that’s not recommended either. We mean never – ever – cross your path in front of a drag queen during her performance. “Unless you want to get slapped,” our veteran laughs. “Bitches will cut you.” Leave your straight bestie. Despite protests from her and you that she’s different than others, it’s a rare straight lady who actually knows and can rock her role at a gay bar bar. “This is not a petting zoo,” our club authority says, only half-joking. “Call her for brunch tomorrow and tell her all about it.” davidatlanta.com | 41

the D list David Atlanta’s weekly list of truths all gay men have come to know

Dancing queens

A throbbing Disco beat isn’t the automatic way to every gay man’s heart. Crank up the rock or visit Country Night for proof.

Disney princess lovers

10 types all gay men don’t fit

Independent

Just because we can run our lives well doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes need friends, family and each other.

Some of us don’t know Ariel from Elsa from Jasmine. If we accidentally remember, it’s because we were kids then, not because we’re gay.

Theme party experts

Fashion plates

Affluent

We wish, but no. The proverbial windfall of two-income households, or money growing in childless IRA’s, don’t exist for everyone.

With props to our showtune diehards and stage devotees, there are gay men who – shocker – would rather watch TV than see a play.

Creative types

Sexual risk-takers

Bitches

Pass this one on to your straight friends: Some gays couldn’t help with your outfit if our lives depended on it.

Yes, we know gay stylists, artists, writers and designers. No we can’t help you with your living room or your hair.

Despite what you heard, we don’t all think every occasion calls for a costume, a color palette, and a playlist.

Seedy anonymous sex happens, but don’t limit us all in the same sticky boat. Vanilla is one of our 31derful flavors.

Theater queens

Maybe everyone wants to be as quick as Bianca Del Rio, biting as Kathy Griffin and as caustic as Karen Walker. Almost no one is.

Got an idea for an upcoming D List? Want to share your truths with the rest of the Gay-TL? Write mike@davidatlanta.com so we can include it. 54 | 3.23.16

advice

You might also try a letting go ritual: Write a letter to your ex pouring out the good, bad and ugly. Now – and this step is crucial – don’t send it. Tuck the letter in a drawer, and put your former relationship away with it. Or go further. Burn it and release your past into the air with the smoke. Hey, Daddy! My ex and I were together seven years, but the last year of it was a lie. He cheated on me repeatedly, promising each time not to do it again. He eventually moved out without discussing what made him do it. I see him at the bars enjoying his singlehood, but I can’t stop wondering what happened. I deserve an explanation. How do I go about getting it? Couldn’t Handle Even A Talk Explaining Dalliances Dear CHEATED:

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy!

Wondering what motivates other people is tempting, but futile. There are probably tons of “reasons” for your ex’s decisions, but speculating on theories only delays your recovery. Turn your energy toward the person you can control and who needs your help: You. What would you do differently in the future? Did you put up with it for too long? Did you invest in someone who wasn’t earning it? Would you prefer a man who respects your relationship as much as you do? The closure you seek will come in the form of lessons learned.

Hey, Daddy! After a year of passionate sex, genuine laughs and always having a Plus One, we broke up. It was mutual, After 13 years, I thought “happily ever after” was and it was the right thing to do, but the only person I ours. I was wrong. Dirty laundry aside, he’s gone. I’m left with two dogs, a mortgage, and a house full of want to talk to about it is him, my ex. painful memories. Certain gays about town remind me of inside jokes we have. Something happens on “our show,” and I want Here’s the crazy part: I’d take him back. I’ve spent too to text him. I see “our place,” and I wonder if he’s been much time on this to close the door on a whole era of my there. I don’t want to get back together, but I miss him. life. I don’t want help moving on. I want my life back! I don’t want to give him the wrong impression, but I do Lingering Emotional Turmoil, Gnawing Obsession want to talk. What should I do? Dear LET GO: Truly Admit Loving Kindness Is Never Gone The door you’re clinging to is already closed. It’s OK not to “bounce back” right away, but it’s not OK to wallow indefinitely. Dear TALKING: Hug your dogs, call your friends, hire a counselor, sell the house, What you’re experiencing is grief. Your relationship died, and but whatever you do, let him go because he’s already gone. the impulse to talk to your ex is understandable. But don’t, at least not right now.

Daddy

If the breakup was done right, he knows where you stand. Opening old wounds only extends your distress. The grieving process is how you move on, so use it to absorb memories that arise and internalize how much the relationship meant to you. Think of the reasons your breakup was the right thing to do. 60 | 3.23.16

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Normally you’re better at tagging along or simply going with the flow. This way of doing things has proven quite effective for you in the past. Indeed, it has gotten you far. What you have now is different. The things you’ve started will do you no good until you complete them.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Your heart is in the right place, so feel free to share your good mood with others. Keep things simple and straightforward. You will find that you can be much more efficient when you cut out the aspects that aren’t pertinent or absolutely necessary. Follow your heart.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): Have sympathy for those who need to vent this week. Don’t be surprised if people line up outside your door for a chance to bend your ear for an hour or two. Your mind is sharp. You will be able to see to the core of any issue brought before you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): You may find it hard to get rolling this week. It’s likely that you’re caught in a gridlock between your mind and heart. Be careful about letting this tension build. Relax. Tackle things one step at a time and finish one project before starting another.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): You will probably want everyone to know how you feel this week. You won’t be shy about expressing your emotions. Feel free to take the lead on matters, for you have the self-confidence and emotional stability to do quite well at the helm of the ship.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): You’re apt to be spurred into action by strong forces that don’t want you to take a break. Keep in mind that the more you resist, the more you will be pushed and pulled by outside sources. If you find yourself in a bind, take a deep breath and calm down.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): Put your foot down. Don’t let others push you around. It could be that you’re used to letting people have their way in order to keep the peace. The problem with this is that your dreams and goals may get lost in the shuffle. Don’t lose sight of your true destination.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Feel free to let it all out this week. It’s finally your turn to stand up and say what you feel. Don’t let others push you into places you don’t want to be. The key is to probe deeply with your penetrating mind and share your incredible insights with others.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): For goodness’ sake, make a decision! The more you flounder about which way to go, the likelier it is that you will miss the boat altogether. You have all the facts you need, so don’t delay any longer. Once you make up your mind, be strong and throw all your weight behind it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Emotionally speaking, you’re probably doing quite well. You have extra self-confidence to draw on to tackle your projects. The one difficult aspect of the day probably has to do with some sort of mental challenge that for some reason just isn’t making sense.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Mentally, you’re apt to do very well this week. You will find that you can tackle just about any challenge that comes along. The most difficult aspect of the day will be dealing with your emotions. More than likely, you will feel a desire for attention. You just want to be loved.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): You might be in a bit of a jam this week, when one situation doesn’t work well with what you’re thinking, and another doesn’t fit well with what you’re feeling. There’s a clash taking place that may be difficult to reconcile, especially if you remain stubbornly in your position.

Bitch

S E S S I O N I like to say that I'm a widower, because I pretend you're dead.

It makes me sad when I overhear you using the same lines you used on me 15 years ago on yet another cute young thing.

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Just move to L.A. already. No one will miss you here. We're tired of your self promotion. Thank you for your sanctimonious insights into how to live my life. I’ll file them right where they belong.

You both spend most of your relationship telling social media how great your relationship is.

No, bitch, his mom said she only helped him pay for that BMW, like she helps pay for his modest apartment. Cause he's poor and works in a shop. Plus that's his 60+ y/o john's old car, so sit down & don't be jealous.

You put way too much weight on the times you were right, and I put weight on the hundreds of times you were so arrogantly sure but ended up dead-ass wrong.

All people are liking are your shirtless pic, boo. Not you.

Thanks for your opinion. I was wondering how to get the overthe-hill cokehead dance party perspective.
