I hate that society constantly shovels 3-6 percent body fat as the perfect man. I don’t even think that body type is desirable, and I constantly worry that those guys don’t get enough to eat. What’s worse, for this column I approached several different people of size to submit pictures of themselves in various fashion forward clothing, and none of them could come through for me. My favorite excuse was the one claiming that he lost too much weight and wouldn’t be a good fit, that readers would chime in to say that I wasn’t fairly representing the larger man with pictures of small dudes. Not that any of you readers would even know what he looks like now vs. six months ago, but the fact that he somehow fantasizes himself as small, when he’s still bigger than I am, made me laugh out loud for several minutes. And that’s one of many of the body image issues that plagues us today.
The model in you The gay community can be obsessed with the latest trends in fashion. We worry over our appearance, to the tune of over $400 billion dollars spent, by men from all around the world. That’s a lot of fucking money to feel pretty, especially against how many of us claim that we don’t actually care what anyone thinks about our appearance. Liar.
The next guy could be the poster child for the Chubbies brand and is really hot: bearded, pot bellied, tatted, etc. He told me that he just wasn’t attractive enough for the magazine. So even though I would have crawled through a political protest rally to lick his face, he still somehow felt that he wasn’t desirable enough to be part of the column. Even with professional modeling photographs, that clearly show he’s ready to be seen as such, he still doubts himself. Where did we go wrong in society that we are so obsessed with our appearance, that we shame ourselves into being less than beautiful? We somehow don’t trust that we are good enough, and that’s the true disappointment of our culture.
If all the fat kids in cute clothes that were too shy or awkward to offer up amazing photos to share in this column The problem is this crazy notion that a majority of the male were to trust their own confidence, I wouldn’t have been models we see, are a direct mirror of men in our society – late with my deadline to submit this column. that this strange correlation can be spoon-fed to us, and we I do hope, that when they read this, each of the people will somehow agree that it’s right. I reached out to take a moment to affirm that they are One out of every three men in Atlanta are overweight. That’s beautiful, that they look in the mirror and say something not anywhere near the ratio of model types that barrage our positive about themselves. media. All we see are tiny waists and rippled abs all over billboards and print ads. That’s not a true representation of So before you go buy your next cute outfit or summer what society looks like, at all. The media something nice about yourself too. romanticizes being small as the most desirable thing we You’re worth it. must achieve. We are constantly tricked into believing that if we’re not beautiful, then we don’t have money or success or sex. As a fat kid myself, I assure you that I fuck on the regular. I have a great job, and feel that I earn a fare wage for what I do. My bills are paid, food is on the table – more than my fair share – and I can afford to travel quite a bit. I have a 35” waist and weigh about 220 pounds. Anyone that’s met me will tell you that I’m nowhere near skinny. I eat as much that’s good for me, as bad stuff. I run daily (yes, fuck you) and I walk my dogs often. 20 | 3.30.16

RUNWAY TRENDS THAT YOU CAN ADAPT TO MAKE ALL YOUR OWN
W
by Mike Fleming hen you hit the town in your cute looks this spring, take some cues from the Spring-Summer 2016 runways of New York, London and Milan. Some of the latest men’s trends may not be ready for the real world just yet, but you can totally rock elements of our favorite five. The trick to trends is to be inspired, not ruled, by them. The following pages contain the ones we look forward to seeing you work. Make them your own, and you’ll always be ahead of the fashion curve.
ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
Whether you’re looking to serve East Atlanta Realness with the western yokes, or something more Little Five Points in a square-cut bowling style, 1950s Shirts let in the breeze. Both of those burghs are also good for finding thrift versions at lower prices. 26 | 3.30.16
GO SHORTER
While some designers are already serving full Three’s Company in short-shorts, most are rocking mid-thigh versions of Shorter Shorts that show off those squats and lunges you’ve been doing. Consider hemming or rolling your burmudas to stay on trend.
davidatlanta.com | 27
WIDE AND COLORFUL
Combining two of the trends we saw peeking their heads up for Fall-Winter, Wider Pant Legs meet Saturated Hues for spring. It’s not time to ditch your skinny jeans completely, but you had to know it wasn’t going to last.
LADYLIKE
What do you call an effeminate top? A Blouse. But it’s not the Blouse you met at the bar last week. The Traditionally Feminine Textiles of blouses are also the materials used increasingly for high-end designer menswear. Alternaqueers rejoice.

KNIGHTS IN WHITE & DENIM
You can take Denim head-to-toe for a ‘70s throwback, or you can rock it in unexpected pieces with white. And designers aren’t afraid this season to put them together: All the boys will see you coming in White Jeans.

The ‘80s are like, totally back
by Buck Cooke
PET SHOP BOYS DROP ‘SUPER’ NEW ALBUM AS BELINDA CARLISLE HITS ATLANTA. HERE’S WHY 35 YEARS AGO IS SO RIGHT NOW.
F
ormed in 1981, British duo the Pet Shop Boys have continually taken risks and morphed through the changes in dance, electronic and pop music, often taking extreme risks with maximum payoff. On April Fool’s Day, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe release “Super,” their 13th studio album, and the title is a perfect descriptor for the pair’s staying power as artists and cultural icons. In the ‘80s, PSB gave us hits like “West End Girls,” “It’s a Sin,” “Always On My Mind,” and “What Have I Done to Deserve This,” among other stellar tracks. The late ‘90s saw a Boys resurgence with dance tracks “I Don’t Know What You Want But I Can’t Give It Anymore” and “New York City Boy” (complete with pulse-pounding remixes from Almighty and Thunderpuss). The hits continued into the new millennium.
The first track released from album, “Inner Sanctum,” features Tennant’s haunting vocals as synths and drum machines build up the beat to a climax. Somewhat akin to “Axis,” the first track on “Electric,” PSB let the beats do most of the work of whipping their fans into a frenzy for the new album. “The Pop Kids,” the album’s first single, evokes the ‘80s with retro sounds and lyrics about two friends ending up in London in the early 1980s and becoming obsessed with the music scene, much like fans might imagine Tennant and Lowe did in the early days of their friendship. The track harkens back to the days of “West End Girls” in some ways, but the production is slick and sounds as current as anything in popular music today.
The Pet Shop Boys are making a big splash with the release of “Super.” A series of pop-up shops will open in London the weekend the album goes on sale, selling signed CD and vinyl copies of the album along with t-shirts and other memorabilia. The duo celebrated the release date announcement earlier this year by quickly selling out a four-show residency at London’s Royal Opera House scheduled for July, and they’ll hopefully tour “Super” is their second collaboration with Stuart Price as pro- in support of the new album. ducer. He has worked with the likes of Scissor Sisters, Kylie Minogue and Madonna, plus he produced the duo’s 2013 album After 35 years in the business, the Boys show no signs of slow“Electric,” a high-energy dance tour de force. “Super” picks up ing down. Granted, if the speed of their music is any indication, they may actually accelerate to light speed any day now. where “Electric” left off. 42 | 3.30.16
PSB aren't the only folks from the ‘80s who still matter. GoGos frontwoman Belinda Carlisle is still recording, and her latest tour brings her to Atlanta this Friday to play Center Stage. A portion of ticket proceeds benefits Atlanta Pride. The Go-Go's were one of the most successful all-female groups of the ‘80s with an impressive array of hit singles that would go on to become classic party fare. You know you love "Vacation," "Our Lips are Sealed," and the irrepressible "We Got the Beat." In 1986, she released her first solo album "Belinda," which spawned the hit single "Mad About You." Albums "Heaven on Earth" and "Runaway Horses" followed with hits like "Circle in the Sand," "I Get Weak," "Summer Rain," and "Leave a Light On." Carlisle eventually rekindled an on-again/off-again relationship with her former band and continued to release solo albums between tours. One of those projects contained the track that might have endeared her most to gay fans, "Live Your Life Be Free." Lyrics like "Rules are made to be broken every day/ You've got one life to live, so hey (why don't you)/ Live your life be free" make it a natural fit for LGBTQ people. Carlisle is no stranger to LGBTQ causes herself. She has performed at Prides all over the U.S. and the UK, and her son, James Duke Mason, came out to family and friends when he was 14. At the age of 22, he ran for West Hollywood City Council and lost but was subsequently appointed to the mayor's 21st Century Leaders Task Force. He was unanimously elected to the West Hollywood Lesbian & Gay Advisory Board. Mason is a writer, actor and advocate. davidatlanta.com | 43

advice
Hey, Daddy! I’m in love with my best friend. Half the time I think he must know exactly how I feel, but the other half he seems clueless. To make matters worse, he is notorious for not sharing his feelings. I think a lot about how much I’d like to bring down his emotional barriers, but I’ve seen him bolt at the slightest hint somebody wants to get serious. Blurting it out won’t work. I might spook him permanently. I’ve made eyes and dropped hints until the cows come home. He’s not reading them. How can I get through? Looks Of Valid Emotion, Still I Can’t Kickstart Dear LOVE SICK:
HEY,
Daddy!
There’s a reason communication is key: It works. Still, too much of it is Kryptonite for people who view facing feelings as tantamount to self-destruction. That’s a problem, but it’s pointless and ineffective to make it yours to fix. Forcing guys into conversations they aren’t equipped to handle can be disastrous. You have two choices. One is to let it go without revealing yourself. The other is to tell him in the most non-confrontational way possible – “Hey, I’ve got this situation, and I’m wanting to know your thoughts (not feelings!) about it.” – and then still let it go. If he’s interested, let him circle back around to it in his own time.
Hey, Daddy!
The former option is worth considering. If you are the type of person who pushes for emotional resolutions, not only You know when you wake up the next morning and are you his worst nightmare, you too won’t thrive in a relago, “So that happened”? Well, it happened. I had sex tionship that avoids communication. You might be better off not getting involved. with my best friend. I saw it coming, but did he? If he sees it as a total mistake, things might be weird now. If he’s glad it happened, there could be more to explore. When we’re not queening out and laughing, he’s kind of the strongsilent type. How can I find out where we stand?
Hey, Daddy! Here’s a gay conundrum for you. I’m want a guy named Paul, but Paul has the hots for Noah. And, yep, Noah is all about me. Help!
My Inner Neuroses Don’t Read Either A Definite or Rejection Could Lads Undo Seriously Tangled Emotional Relationships? Dear MIND READR: Dear CLUSTER: You didn’t write in to a psychic, but I am getting a signal. Like you, I have no idea how your friend feels. Luckily, we have a tried That you’re all friends is a great start. Buy a bottle of wine and call a meeting. The knots can’t get more twisted by applying and true method to find out: Communication. some honest communication to the situation. Asking him how he feels is how you’ll move your friendship forward. Chances are that he is asking himself the same questions. Daddy Living in fear of the answers is worse than knowing them. This is still your best friend, and you are still you. The only way to make it weird would be to let it fester. Barring supernatural insight, something tells me if you can queen out, laugh and still want into each other’s pants, this may be a deeper match. 64 | 3.30.16

the armorettes
ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Something’s gotten into you this week. The radical thinker inside you is determined to tear down every convention, especially in the art world. Why are you so furious with orthodoxy?
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Because you have a tendency to brood over everything right now, a week like this can’t be anything but beneficial. You may find it gratifying, especially if you try some artistic, esoteric, or religious activity.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): If you’re involved in an occupation similar to that of your mother or father you may question if the choice was yours or preordained. Did you take this career path of your own volition? If not, what is it that you should really be doing with your professional life?
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): There are days when you feel wonderful without being able to attribute the feeling to any real event. Of course, your rational mind will search for a reason for your happiness. Don’t even try to understand. Just enjoy!
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): Most people form their opinions on the basis of what they’re told by a few people who supposedly know what they’re talking about. You have no patience for these tendencies. In fact, you’re tempted to use vulgar language just to shock people out of their complacency.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): The week ahead should be excellent. For the past several days you’ve been searching for meaning in life. There have been changes in your chief occupation, new relationships, bursting ambitions. You can let all of that soul searching go.
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): If you’re involved with theater, dance, or painting, the week ahead will be a bright one for you. You feel a strong desire to bring people together in pursuit of some artistic endeavor. Listen to your longings.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): You will probably be perfectly in tune with the week ahead. Family and friends find your company soothing and pleasant, and they’re likely to thank you for it. Aren’t weeks like this great?
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): You can expect to have some disagreements with your partner or friend. You may overreact. If you do, it’s only because the climate of the last few days has made you feel more vulnerable than usual.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Don’t try to control what happens, because you won’t be able to fathom what’s going on. You may do some soul-searching. Don’t spend too much time staring at your belly button. Look around you for some of the answers.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): It will be as though you’re in a new and hopeful world this week. The people you meet will be cordial and caring, and the future will seem like a bright, attractive place to live. In other words, it’s like a fabulous dream.
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Pisces: This kind of strange week doesn’t come around often. It will seem as though you no longer know what you want. People won’t understand you, and you will think that explaining yourself is pointless. The best thing to do may be to unplug. You have nothing to lose.
