WELCOME
Welcome to our 2023 Handbook of Roses. In creating our 24th USA edition, we’ve had a chance to reflect on the exciting journey our handbooks have been on throughout the years. We will continue to share with you our in depth rose care knowledge, to present our most loved and recommended rose varieties, together with a compilation of beautiful real-life examples to inspire, regardless of your gardening expertise.
Throughout this past year we have seen an enormous amount of love for our roses, more so than ever before. It’s refreshing to know that the time we were spending in our gardens throughout the pandemic was not just a way to pass the time, but a hobby that has prevailed. The joy a blooming rose can give, as well as the time and care it takes to nourish them towards maturity, is a wonderful feeling and one that we must say, can be highly addictive.
As ever, we thank you for your custom, your patience, and your continual devotion. With that, we hope you thoroughly enjoy your new Handbook of Roses and find within it new ideas and inspiration to add to your own gardens.

We are David Austin Roses
CRAFTSMEN, FARMERS, HYBRIDISTS, ROSE EXPERTS
LEGACY
It has been more than 60 years since David Austin Snr first introduced English Roses to the world, and more than 20 years since our debut in the US. Beginning with just 40 varieties, our understanding of the US market, our customers and the varying climates has developed enough to allow us to curate a collection of more than 130 varieties, of which we are immensely proud.
Today, our UK roses are still grown on our family farm in Shropshire, using traditional and intricate techniques, many carried out by hand. Our horticultural heritage is something that we are very proud of and strive to bring to our customers in the US.
INSPIRED BY NATURE
From a simple fascination with nature and a love for roses, David Austin Snr turned his passion into a global business, selling his English Roses in garden centers all over the world. Inspired by the beauty and fragrance of Old Roses, he set out to craft a rose with similar characteristics, but which benefitted from the health, repeat flowering and array of colors found in modern roses. Craftmanship, nature and expertise has allowed us to breed over 200 English Rose hybrids within the David Austin collection, each one undergoing 13 years of trial and development before being released.

EXPERT ADVICE & AFTERCARE
We’re committed to helping you through every stage of growing roses, from selecting the right variety, to helping you give your rose the care it needs to thrive. You will find helpful videos and tips on our website, and our friendly rose experts are always happy to help.
YEAR GUARANTEE
We take great pride in supplying roses of the highest quality. Due to the nature of living plants however, throughout the seasons, the appearance and scent of your rose may vary. This is not necessarily a fault with your rose but a unique sign of that particular variety and its individual characteristics. However, if any roses arrive damaged or fail to grow, we will replace them free of charge.
BRED IN ENGLAND, GROWN IN THE USA
Staying true to our roots, our roses are bred in Shropshire, England and then grown in the USA for your enjoyment. We continue to explore various growing areas within the US to increase efficiency and develop our knowledge of the US market.

We are breeders of exquisite English Roses
EXCEPTIONAL HEALTH, REPEAT FLOWERING PROWESS, OUTSTANDING COLOR & FRAGRANCE
From pollination to sale, the whole process of creating a new rose takes around 13 years.
For each new rose released we will have grown roughly 120,000 unique roses for research. The development takes patience, dedication, and expertise, but the end result is always worth it.
Since its inception over 60 years ago, our world-class breeding programme has continued to advance and evolve as we pursue an ever more beautiful rose. Meticulously trialed in gardens around the world, new introductions embody the unrivaled characteristics that have come to be expected of a David Austin Rose.
This means our established varieties require a rigorous retrial to ensure that they still meet the same standards year after year. Roses that fall below our required standards over time are therefore retired from the David Austin collection and will no longer be available.

ETHICALLY, RESPONSIBLY, SUSTAINABLY
We work closely with our US growers to ensure we adhere to modern sustainable growing standards.
PLANTS
The health and well-being of our plants is at the core of everything we do. Our goal today remains the same as it did at the beginning, to develop the healthiest roses possible without compromising their beauty, fragrance, grace and, most importantly, their charm. Above all we love roses and we want to see them thrive.
PEOPLE
Our plants are created by highly skilled craftsmen, grown by our farmers and then taken home to be loved by our customers. We take great pride in the fact that our plants bring so much joy to our customers and with our profits we work to ethically extend that joy and give back to causes we believe in.
PLANET
We have a deep rooted love of nature and we are committed to doing all we can to protect and preserve it. We have a unique reliance on the natural environment; as the quality of our roses depends on it. We are committed to treading more lightly on the planet.

We are committed to change
Retiring our roses
In the late 1940s, David Austin Snr set out on his quest to breed the most beautiful and healthy roses; a vision that remains at the heart of the business today. It is this vision that drives our continuing assessment of rose varieties within our current collection to ensure they meet our exacting standards and expectations.
Due to climatic changes and the evolution of plant diseases, some historical varieties will no longer reach our increasingly high standards.
It is in these instances that we must retire these varieties to ensure our customers receive only the best roses, that will continue to thrive in their gardens for years to come, regardless of gardening expertise.
The roses we decide to retire will always remain a rich part of our history, paving the way for many more roses to come and will remain in our archives for their admirers to look back on in the future.
Combined with a stronger resilience to disease and other environmental factors, we hope there is a suitable alternative for your retired favorite and we will endeavor to guide you towards a new generation of beautiful roses.

POTTED ROSES 2-Quart size
What is a 2-quart potted rose?
Our potted roses arrive planted in a 2-quart plastic pot with soil and foliage. Depending on the time of year, they may arrive in bloom or will bloom shortly after planting. The benefits of 2-quart potted roses are that they can be ordered and planted outside of bare root season and can be enjoyed almost immediately. Delivery is seasonal in spring and fall. SCAN
BARE ROOT ROSES
What is a bare root rose?
Simply put, bare root roses are roses in their dormant state, delivered without foliage or soil. Light and easy to handle, bare root roses are great for mass planting and are either grafted using a strong, hardy rootstock or grown on their own roots. Our selection of own root roses are grown from cuttings and therefore develop their own root system. They are similar in size to those grafted and meet the same grading standards as grafted stock.
Once planted, they will put on some growth and produce some flowers in their first summer. More importantly, they will start to develop a root system that will take in essential nutrients, producing stronger growth the following spring and allowing them to burst into bloom the following summer.

i. MIXED BORDERS
One of the most popular ways to use roses is within a mixed border. With their long flowering season, roses inject unrivaled grace and glamour, harmonizing and contrasting well with other companion plants.
ii. POTS AND CONTAINERS
Roses grow particularly well in pots and containers. You could enhance an entrance by placing a potted rose each side of a doorway. It is also a good alternative if your soil is very poor, or you have no beds or borders.
iii. WALLS AND FENCES
By training a fabulous, fragrant climbing rose up a wall or fence, you can convert a dull, even unsightly area into one of the most eyecatching features in your garden.
iv. ROSE HEDGES
Rose hedges are an informal answer to defining different areas of your garden in a pretty and colorful way. They also work well lining the edge of a path or along a garden perimeter.
v. SHADY AREAS
While roses need at least a minimum of four hours direct sunlight during the summer months, adding a shade tolerant rose in a shady spot will bring color and bloom where other flowers may fail to do so.
vi. ATTRACTING POLLINATORS
All bees, and many beneficial insects, flock to roses for the generous quantities of pollen. Generally, the fewer the number of petals in a bloom, the greater the number of stamens, and the easier it is for bees to collect pollen.

Purple plants are a particularly good choice for blending with roses in a mixed border. Ranging from soft hues to rich tones, there is a shade of purple to complement any color rose. THE PERFECT PAIRING
Accompanying plants for your roses
Combining roses with other plants not only highlights and complements their beauty, but will also give your beds and borders longevity, retaining seasonal interest and color throughout the year.
MIX WITH OTHER PLANTS
In a mixed border, build interest by combining shrub roses with spring bulbs, perennials, biennials and annuals to create a tapestry of different color and texture.
LOW-GROWING AT THE FRONT
Plant low-growing perennials at the front of a border to conceal the stems of your roses.
Lady’s mantle, heucheras and hardy geraniums, such as Geranium ‘Patricia’ look especially pretty when paired with deeper colored roses.
TALL PUNCTUATING PLANTS
Tall flowering annuals, biennials or perennials are great for the middle of a border. Foxgloves, for example, coincide well with the growing season of roses, and their tall, spire shapes create a beautiful contrast.
COMBINE WITH BLUE
If shopping by color when looking for companion plants, you can’t go wrong with the blue and purple tones of lavender, salvias and catmint, which look wonderful with every rose color and creates an eye-catching display.
DON’T OVERCROWD
Avoid overcrowding your beds and borders and choose less vigorous plants that will not overpower and disturb your roses. Plant at least 2ft away to lessen competition between your plants.
EDGE WITH BOXWOOD
Create symmetrical borders around your roses for an elegant finishing touch. Roses are a perfect companion for boxwoods and will inject an English country garden feel to your garden.

Look for roses with very few thorns if planting in a busy walkway or near a seating area. The higher up the stem you go, the fewer thorns there will be, making them safer for pets and children, easier to prune and better for cutting to enjoy indoors.

SPOTLIGHT ON Floral Frames
STREET STYLE HEDGEROWS
For smaller spaces and narrow streetside gardens, a rose hedge will provide consistent color during the summer months. Easy to maintain, a simple line of shrub roses or a horizontally trained rambler will transform even the simplest space into a curbside floral oasis.
BOXED IN BORDER HEDGE
Rose hedges can be used to frame perimeters of buildings to spectacular effect. Simpler to plan and maintain than a mixed bed or border, a dedicated rose hedge can provide protection and privacy without being imposing. For extra grandeur, install a double hedge by lining your hedgerow with a small box hedge, rather like framing a picture.

Color is a matter of personal taste but you can also be swayed by the meaning behind the different shades. For example, red is synonymous with romance, while yellow is a sign of friendship and white can symbolize spirituality and new starts. The great thing about roses is that their shades tend to pair well with most companion plants and will fit in seamlessly to their surroundings.
BLOOM
We recommend you decide which bloom shape you prefer. Some blooms are full and large, with shallow or deep cups and some have fewer petals, all as equally beautiful. This is highlighted within the information on each variety.
SIZE
It’s important to check size when selecting your rose, which can be found within the rose descriptions throughout. From smaller shrubs to climbers over 10ft tall, we have a rose for every garden need.

SCENTS guide you
Few garden plants are as fragrant as roses, and it is our firm belief that this fragrance is an integral part of what makes a David Austin rose. Not only is it a wonderful addition to the beauty of a rose, but fragrance itself evokes many emotions and triggers more than just our sense of smell.
Our sense of smell connects with the part of the brain that is responsible for emotion and memory. As such, scent plays a very important role in our emotional identity and making our memories.
A smell can transport us to a place or a person in a second – it’s an instantaneous emotional journey. A certain perfume reminds us of our
childhood, or a certain rose scent may rekindle memories of our grandmother’s garden. There are endless examples here, but it is hugely powerful and magical – a fleeting image flies through our mind. We can’t quite grasp it, but it feels so real, just for a second.
Roses and their fragrance have become synonymous with one another thanks to Mr Austin’s dedication to pairing the unique charm and fragrance of much-loved Old Roses with the benefits and repeat-flowering qualities of modern roses. It is rare for us not to want to smell a rose when presented to us and to delight in the varying scents that an English Rose bestows.

FRAGRANCE GUIDE
If you are still unsure which rose to choose, then opt for the variety with the strongest scentafter all we believe that ‘fragrance is the other half of the beauty of a rose’. Few garden plants are as fragrant as roses, some with a stronger or more pleasing fragrance than others.
G ARDENER’S TIP
Select roses that are just opening and place immediately in a vase of water. Doing this first thing in the morning before the heat of the day will help them to stay fresh for longer.
Old Rose
Seen as the classic rose fragrance, it is traditional in nature, with warm, heady notes, often softened with a dash of sweetness. Unique in its character, and reminiscent of rose perfumes, it is arguably the most delicious of all the rose fragrances and can be found almost exclusively in pink and red roses.
Tea
True to its name, the Tea scent is often said to resemble a freshly opened packet of tea. In English Roses, the aroma most frequently appears in the yellows and apricots. A complex fragrance, it can have sweeter elements of violets and fruitiness mixed with spicy, tar-like qualities of the dominating tea notes.
Musk
The musk scent, resembling the old musk used in perfumes, is a warm, rich fragrance which can be both sweet and spicy and, at times, is dominated by the scent of cloves. Unlike other fragrance types, musk is produced in the stamens rather than in the petals of the rose. Musk is often found in ramblers, where the sheer abundance of flowers produces a heady blanket of perfume.
Fruity
Found across all colors of English Roses, fruity fragrances are diverse in nature, ranging from zesty citrus scents to rich berry and exotic fruit aromas. With notes such as apple, mango and elderflower, fruity fragrances are fresh and uplifting, each with their own delicious twist.
Myrrh
This distinctive scent holds a majestic spiciness and the aromatic warmth of sweet anise. Found almost exclusively in English Roses, it can be an acquired taste due to the medicinal character of the liquorice notes.
David Austin Snr is widely credited with reviving the fragrance within modern roses. Inspired by the Old Roses, he passionately believed that fragrance was intrinsic to the beauty of the rose.

ROSE CARE
Climates
Roses are incredibly versatile plants and can grow in varying climates. Knowing the ideal climate for growing your chosen rose can help your plants thrive within their new home. Most roses prefer warm climates but many are extremely adaptable and can handle extreme temperatures when cared for correctly.
COLD CLIMATES
Prolonged periods of exceptionally cold weather can be challenging for roses, but some varieties are hardier than others. Plant your rose deeply, with the base of the stems about 2” – 3” below ground level. It’s a good idea to provide more insulation for your rose during the coldest months by creating a 6” – 12” mound of wood chips or soil around the base of the plant.
We'd recommend choosing roses highlighted as suitable from zones 4-11 if you live in a colder climate.
Many roses grow well and repeat flower where the climate has preferential growing conditions
HOT & DRY CLIMATES
Hot and dry climates can present certain challenges for roses, such as dehydration. Planting in some shade can help protect roses from the midday sun. For roses in beds, water deep and occasionally. Roses in pots may need watering daily.
HOT & HUMID CLIMATES
Hot and humid climates can be favorable for pests and diseases. As a preventative measure, be sure to spray your roses as advised in your rose care calendar.

ROSE CARE
Notes
Roses are easy to grow and are remarkably tolerant. However, with a little extra care and attention your roses will really flourish.
SPRAYING
As a preventative measure, we recommend spraying roses twice a year with a fungicide spray. The first spray should be done in late spring, when a canopy of fresh green leaves has appeared.
The second spray should be done in late summer, before the fall flush of flowers. If disease occurs you may need to spray more often.
Ideally, it is best to avoid spraying your roses during high midday heat or particularly hot weather, as this can burn the leaves. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines when spraying.
MULCHING
Apply a 3” thick layer of mulch around the base of the rose. We recommend hardwood chips, shredded or chipped bark or pine needles as a mulch material.
If some of the mulch layer from the previous year still remains, just top up to maintain the level of mulch at 3” thick.
Mulching helps to retain moisture in the surrounding soil and suppress weeds. It not only improves the appearance of the bed but also helps to prevent erosion and destablization of the plant caused by wind and rain.
We recommend mulching in late spring immediately after you have given your rose its first feed of the year.
FEEDING
Apply rose fertilizer by sprinkling it over the soil around the plants and gently mix it into the soil surface. We recommend feeding your rose twice a year, dependant on your climate region.
PRUNING
After the first summer of flowers, repeat-flowering shrub roses can be cut back to a height of around 18”. In the years following, the height can be reduced by roughly half, depending on what you want the rose to do in that space. When pruning, focus on creating an attractive shape. Cut out any dead, diseased or damaged stems and remove any remaining foliage.
With climbing roses, the first few seasons should be focused on training your rose to fill your space. The main stems should, where possible, be trained horizontally to encourage more flowering side shoots. The flowering side shoots produced can be cut back to 2-3” off the main stem. Longer side shoots can be tied in horizontally. Ramblers should be left where they can ramble, but pruning can be carried out much the same with shoots thinned out as necessary.

WATERING
Watering is essential for the performance of your rose. When and how much to water is dependent on many factors. We recommend following these general guidelines during the growing season:
• The soil should be moist but not dripping wet or flooded
• During hot summers, water deeply and occasionally rather than a little every day (in prolonged extreme hot weather you may need to water more often)
• Roses in pots and containers require a lot more water than roses planted in the ground and may need watering daily in hot weather.
Caution: Irrigation and automated sprinkler systems can cause roses to become overwatered.
TREATING DISEASES
Gather up and dispose of any fallen leaves that show signs of disease. Spray with a fungicide spray.
DISEASES
All roses are susceptible to pests and diseases. For your rose to truly flourish, it is important to prevent or control these risks. Follow our planting and annual rose care guidance on our website for more information on the right level of care for your chosen rose and climate region. We would always recommend choosing from our most healthy varieties if you are concerned about managing disease and pests.
You can find all of this information by visiting the rose care section on our website.
HOW TO SPOT DISEASE
Black Spot
Black spots, often ringed with yellow, appear on leaves from early summer onwards. They spread rapidly, causing leaves to turn yellow and drop off.
Powdery Mildew
Light grey powdery patches appear on leaves and young stems in summer, causing distortion. More likely to occur on young plants and in dry conditions.
Rust
The undersides of leaves turn a rusty orange color, with yellow spots appearing on the top of the leaves in summer. The leaves fall early and the vigor is reduced.

PESTS
Aphids, Japanese beetles and thrips are amongst a selection of pests that can affect your rose. There are a number of ways to control pests:
Diverse Planting and Insect Management
A garden with a mixed planting scheme will naturally help to control pests, as it encourages a natural ecosystem of garden insects. Introducing and encouraging ladybugs and lacewings is particularly beneficial.
Manual Removal
For small infestations, brush aphids off with your fingers. For larger infestations, wash them off with soapy water.
Spraying
As a last resort, using a chemical spray should effectively control pests, but be aware that spraying can also affect beneficial garden insects such as ladybugs and bees.
COLD WINTER AREAS
For regions that experience cold winters, we recommend selecting our most cold-hardy varieties. Please refer to our website for more information on your zone and the rose suitability for it.
To help protect your rose from the elements, we strongly recommend that you plant your rose deeply, with the base of the stems about 2-3” below ground level.
During the cold period, we also recommend providing further protection for your rose:
For Shrub Roses
For light protection, lean conifer branches around the rose in a cone-shaped arrangement to provide shelter. Alternatively, wrap the entire plant in burlap. For increased protection, insulate your rose by creating a 6-12” mound of wood chips, leaves or soil around the base of the plant.
For Climbing Roses
Cover the main stems or drape the entire plant in burlap.
For Tree Roses
Wrap the main stem and the head in burlap.
