Osborne Seed Company, LLC COVER CROPS

Note: For all nitrogen fixers (peas, vetch, clover, favas) make sure the proper Rhizobium bacteria is present by adding the compatible Rhizobium inoculate. An inexpensive way to increase nitrogen-fixing activity. Austrian Winter Field Pea This nitrogen-fixing legume can be planted year round but is best known as a winter cover. Mixing with winter rye or triticale will help with airflow. High organic matter. Sow 75 pounds per acre; up to 150 pounds late in the fall. Buckwheat A summer cover crop, Buckwheat grows quickly to suppress weeds and attracts bees and butterflies. Requires little moisture and grows in almost any soil. Needs to be mowed or incorporated 7-10 days after flowering/30 days after sowing. Very sensitive to frost. Sow 60 pounds/acre, 1/2 inch deep. Bunker Triticale Bunker is a high yielding winter hardy variety. Triticale is a cross between wheat and cereal rye and is highly effective in erosion control. Good for winter weed suppression and organic matter incorporation in the spring. Sow 100-125 pounds/acre. Common Vetch Common Vetch fixes nitrogen, crowds out weeds, and provides plenty of organic matter. Establishes quickly and is cold tolerant. Fewer tendrils than hairy vetch, making it easier to till in, which should be done before seed sets. Reduced production of dormant (hard) seeds. Grows well with grains. Sow 60 pounds (with grains) or 100 pounds alone, per acre. Crimson Clover Crimson Clover’s late spring blooming red blossoms bring brilliant color to annual cover crop mixes, and does especially well with rye/triticale, as well as alone. This clover fixes nitrogen and helps control erosion. When managed properly, it will re-seed, but is easily controlled. Performs best if planted late August-September in the Puget Sound, October in Western Oregon. Sow 25 pounds/acre. Fava Bean Diana High yielding fava bean with 3.5-4 inch pods. This nitrogen fixer produces very thick stands and is best suited for early spring or cool fall sowing. Tolerant of wet soil and winter hardy to 10°F. Sow 100-125 pounds/acre. Hairy Vetch A cold hardy winter cover, Hairy Vetch will withstand frozen soil if allowed to establish properly in the fall. It prefers well-drained soil but can withstand somewhat wet conditions. Fixes large quantities of nitrogen and produces a great deal of green manure. Best when used in a cereal/legume mix. Seed toxic to mono-gastric animals. Sow 40 pounds with grains, 60 pounds alone/acre, 1 inch deep. We also carry “Lana’ Harry Vetch, an earlier, faster growing variety with increased biomass. Not organic. Hulless “Naked” Oats A high protein feed source for livestock with high grain yields, and an excellent summer cover crop. Excellent disease resistance, including moderate rust resistance. Hulless oats require little processing after threshing and winnowing, and are a possible local substitute for corn and soybean feeds for pigs and poultry. Early spring planting for late summer harvest. 100-150 pounds per acre. Nash’s Field Pea A great warm season nitrogen fixer! Plant in the spring or summer, not typically winter hardy, but has been successfully grown in mild climates. Fast growing, lots of biomass at the time of incorporation makes this a good choice for green manure and nitrogen fixing, Sow 150-200 pounds per acre.

COVER CROPS Oats ‘Cayuse’ Can be used in early spring or fall and prefers cool, moist growing conditions. If planted in the fall, oats can over winter in mild areas or winter kill for easy early spring cultivation. Produces plenty of organic matter. Sow 100-150 pounds/acre. Rye This vigorous winter cereal grain is a great choice for winter cover and soil stabilization. It grows rapidly in cool weather, forming a dense stand with an extensive root system that absorbs unused soil nitrogen and loosens heavy soils while suppressing weeds. It is important to incorporate quickly once mowed, or the stalks will become woody. Rapid growth in the spring can be controlled by mowing. Sow 90-110 pounds/acre, increase as it gets later in the season. Rye Vetch Mix Our Rye Vetch Mix is Certified Organic and grown locally here in Washington State! Both are quite winter hardy, so this mix is excellent for planting in the fall. The vetch flowers attract beneficial insects. Sow 100-150 pounds per acre. White Clover A low growing perennial that is good for a wide range of climates with strong cool weather growth. Good for grazing, has great ground covering ability and a high nitrogen fixing capability. A slow grower initially. Sow 12 pounds per acre or 6 pounds per acre if mixed with other cover crop seed. Also Available: New! Winter Barley

BENEFICIAL INSECT ATTRACTANTS Lacy Phacelia This frilly, durable plant grows 3-4’ tall and produces downward curling purple flowers that bees cannot resist. Attracts predatory insects which need pollen to reproduce. Try growing rows periodically throughout Brussels sprouts to control aphids. Also an excellent and unusual cut flower. Plant single rows 3-4 seeds/inch or 2 pounds per acre in the spring. Sweet Alyssum Use this annual on its own or add it to any cover crop or border mix. Plants are 10-12 inches tall. Sweet Alyssum works well as a predatory insect habitat: Plant dense rows periodically throughout a summer row-crop field and watch the tiny beneficial wasps feed on the pollen. Sow in spring for continuous summer bloom; sow 1 pound/acre or in rows between crops; space 4-8 seeds per inch between 5 foot rows. Utilize unused space by direct seeding it in field roads, or experiment with broadcast under-sowing at last cultivation in winter squash for incredible fruit set.

Take advantage of the market popularity of Lacinato kale with this exceptionally uniform and productive hybrid! Black Magic is an improvement over the open pollinated types in many ways: its leaves are large and wide, straight so they resist curling inward. It also has a much darker and more consistent color, along with an open habit makes harvesting easier. The plants from our trial had sweeter flavor and vigouous regrowth, and all were uniform and high quality; not to mention, there was less bug damage than its OP neighbors. Vates Blue Curled (OP) 65-70 days 20-24”

Medium blue green

Finely curled leaves on a medium height plant. Vates Blue Curled is slow to bolt and withstands yellowing in cold weather. Leaf shape is not heavily curved, and makes a tidier bunch. Very small amount of off types can be seen in this variety. Scarlet (OP) 80 days 36-40”

Red/purple

This open pollinated red kale is very uniform and vigorous, with vivid, show-stopping dark red color. The stalk and petioles are deep purple and the leaves are a nicely contrasting reddish purple. Leaves are tightly curled, with increasing curl later in the season. When harvested regularly, medium-tall plants produce generous yields of large, sturdy leaves. Good bolt tolerance. & Winterbor F1 Also Available: Lacinato (OP) For Ornamental Kale, please see our flower section.

This pumpkin is one of a kind! Prolific long vines produce blocky, deeply ribbed peachy pink fruit. Porcelain Doll ripened earlier than 115 days, but the color continued to intensify with time. RADICCHIO

Days = from transplant to maturity Shape We have introduced several brand new varieties from a company in Italy which specializes in radicchio for the professional grower. They are now producing hybrid varieties which we have been slotting for the Northwest. They compare favorably to the standards. New! T&T 4070 F1 60 days Round

A newly available hybrid round red radicchio. Used for the late season in Italy, but we found it did well in the spring and fall in our trials. If you are looking for a hybrid radicchio, we suggest you try 4070 as well as T&T 5070. Sirio (OP) 60-65 days Round

Best for spring and early fall plantings, Sirio also performs well in the summer. Small and round with a uniform maturity, we found this one to be the most similar to Indigo. Color was a lighter red in the spring, but darkened during the summer, and was a beautiful contrast with the white ribs and veining. Average weight: 10 ounces.
