HAITI THE AFTERMATH BY: STEPHANIE MCDONALD The magnitude of the quake – 7.0 on the Richter scale makes it the most powerful to hit the Caribbean republic in about 120 years. Since Haiti‘s worst quake hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince, wrecking the presidential palace, UN HQ and other buildings, a ―large number‖ of UN personnel were reported missing by the organisation. Many people have spent the night outside amid fears of more aftershocks. Describing the earthquake as a ―catastrophe‖, Haiti‘s envoy to the US said the cost of the damage could run into billions. A number of nations, including the US, UK and Venezuela, are gearing up to send aid. The Red Cross is dispatching a relief team from Geneva and the UN‘s World Food Programme is flying in two planes with emergency food aid. The US is preparing to send cutting equipment and a disaster response team. Helps from other countries and organizations (Venezuela, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Lation of America etc) are also coming.
How you can help The
Disasters Emergency Committee – the umbrella organisation for 13 aid agencies including the British Red Cross and Oxfam – has launched an emergency appeal to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake. If you would like to make a donation, please call 0370 60 60 900 or visit www.dec.org.uk
Alive after 11 days in ruins: Haiti survivor lived on cola, beer and cookies A man has been rescued alive from the rub ble of a hotel 11 days after the Haitian earthquake — despite the country's government declaring the search for survivors over. Wismond Exantus, in his 20s, was pulled to safety on Saturday in front of cheering onlookers — telling rescuers he survived by drinking cola, beer and eating cookies. It came as British firefighters returning home after their own life-saving efforts praised the determination of the Haitian people in the face of the disaster. Dozens of onlookers wearing masks against the stench of the city's decaying bodies watched and cheered when Exantus was carried from a narrow tunnel on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance.

IS T PER HIS T HE SON DUM ON THE BEST PLA NET "Hmm, oh boy, that's a toughie," said Evans, as Vieira did her level best to hide her disbelief and disgust. "I mean, I'm sure I've heard of some of these things before, but I have no idea how large they would be." NEW YORK - Idaho resident Kathy Evans brought humiliation to her friends and family Tuesday when she set a new standard for stupidity with her appearance on the popular TV show, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." It seems that Evans, a 32-year-old wife and mother of two, got stuck on the first question, and proceeded to make what fans of the show are dubbing "the absolute worst use of lifelines ever." After being introduced to the show's host Meredith Vieira, Evans assured her that she was ready to play, whereupon she was posed with an extremely easy $100 question. The question was: "Which of the following is the largest?" A) A Peanut B) An Elephant C) The Moon D) Hey, who you calling large? Immediately Mrs. Evans was struck with an all consuming panic as she realized that this was a question to which she did not readily know the answer.
Evans made the decision to use the first of her three lifelines, the 50/50. Answers A and D were removed, leaving her to decide which was bigger, an elephant or the moon. However, faced with an incredibly easy question, Evans still remained unsure. "Oh! It removed the two I was leaning towards!" exclaimed Evans. "Darn. I think I better phone a friend." Using the second of her two lifelines on the first question, Mrs. Evans asked to be connected with her friend Betsy, who is an office assistant. "Hi Betsy! How are you? This is Kathy! I'm on TV!" said Evans, wasting the first seven seconds of her call. "Ok, I got an important question. Which of the following is the largest? B, an elephant, or C, the moon. 15 seconds hun." Betsy quickly replied that the answer was C, the moon. Evans proceeded to argue with her friend for the remaining ten seconds. CONTINUED PAGE 10

DUMBEST PERSON CONTINUED: "Come on Betsy, are you sure?" said Evans. "How sure are you? Puh, that can't be it." To everyone's astonishment, the moronic Evans declined to take her friend's advice and pick 'The Moon.' "I just don't know if I can trust Betsy. She's not all that bright. So I think I'd like to ask the audience," said Evans. Asked to vote on the correct answer, the audience returned 98% in favor of answer C, 'The Moon.' Having used up all her lifelines, Evans then made the dumbest choice of her life. "Wow, seems like everybody is against what I'm thinking," said the too-stupidto-live Evans. "But you know, sometimes you just got to go with your gut. So, let's see. For which is larger, an elephant or the moon, I'm going to have to go with B, an elephant. Final answer." Evans sat before the dumbfounded audience, the only one waiting with bated breath, and was told that she was wrong, and that the answer was in fact, C, 'The Moon.'
Rock Star & Super Star Brothers’ Feud With Sebastian Bach Heats Up in Their Fight for Sobriety
WHERE’S THE BEEF?
There have been many famous high-profile feuds between musicians, some of the most notable in recent memory have been between Jay-Z and Naz, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, and now brothers Rock Star and Super Star are starting a war with one of metal’s greatest vocalists, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach. This feud wasn’t instigated with malice at heart, but rather the desire to help kids and bring attention to a great cause. The feud started when a simple video clip (less than a minute long) was posted on Sebastian Bach’s MySpace page, updating fans about the progress he’s made in the recording studio. The brothers Star caught wind of this clip and decided to ruffle some feathers, but they had much grander plans up their sleeve. They crafted their own parody video, a send-up of Bach’s studio clip, and posted it as a response to Bach’s video. They pulled no punches; with admiration for this legend and a great sense of humor, they cleverly lampooned Bach’s update.
All of the great Rock and Roll feuds sparked a terrific idea for the brothers, which led them to start this war with Bach so that they might be able to draw attention to a cause we all have some relationship with. We Are One (www.weareoneonline.com) is an organization established by Rock Star (Marc Kancler) and Super Star (Kris Kancler) to help kids who are recovering from drug addiction. They’ve set out on a mission to provide these kids with a safe place away from negative influence, offering them workshop jam sessions, free pizza and a place where they can look to someone who can understand what they’re going through. Tied in closely with their organization is the concept for the brothers’ latest project, a new CD and book package entitled “Serenity.” The lineup of guest stars announced so far includes George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), Jon Oliva and Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Bruce Kulick (Kiss) and quite a few other very special surprise guests. The Rock duo’s video can be found in the “News” section on their We Are One site —

HOROSCOPES Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Unexpected developments could quickly shut you down unless you are fully prepared to handle whatever is thrown at you.
Pisces (Feb. 20-March 20) — Should a disagreement arise between you and your mate, don't bring an outsider into the picture in order to endorse your position. You may win the argument, but at what cost? Aries (March 21-April 19) — Conditions are operating on both sides of the coin for you. The very person on whom you are depending to dump your problems has the same idea about handing his or her troubles onto you. Taurus (April 20-May 20) — Social complications of your own making will result if you fail to honor your commitments. Be careful that you don't make a promise to one friend at the expense of offending another. Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Important objectives are not likely to be accomplished if you think all you have to do is show up and everything will be taken care of. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — It is time to carefully review an unprofitable endeavor in which you now find yourself. If it is not living up to its promised expectations. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — Once you make a calculated decision, have the courage of your convictions or don't do anything in the first place. Be particularly careful not to let a less knowledgeable person take the reins. Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Don't attempt to promote or sell something if you truly don't believe in it. Others will see right through your facade and think ill of you for trying to pass on to them what you consider to be unworthy. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — The only way you are going to make a profit from a joint endeavor is if it's something not based purely on an untried idea. Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — You will be luckier at this time dealing with things that others have created rather than from something you've devised. If asked, don't hesitate to jump on their bandwagon. Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) — If material reward alone is your only motivation, you will not have the impetus necessary to succeed. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Someone who is willing to be helpful today might not be so congenial tomorrow, especially if you don't show the proper respect and gratitude for his or her efforts now. This person will feel as if he or she is being used.

Jackson's Restaurant is open from 8 am to closing Tuesday thru Sunday serving Breakfast, Lunch & Din-
ner. The Restaurant is also available for functions such as Showers, Weddings, Anniversaries, Graduations, Holiday Gatherings, Mercy Meals, etc.
The restaurant was designed in the contemporary style, with a generous seating capacity with delightful views. A comfortable dining experience, with a variety of lunch and dinner meals. History of the Restaurant:
Two friends who returned from WWII founded the “Sky-port Diner” in the 1940’s. They named their small eatery after the seaplane airport located in the adjacent lot, and soon became famous for fried clams and ice cream. Business flourished and the Sky-port became a landmark in Methuen, a place to grab a bite while watching the planes take off and land on the Merrimack River. This was before TV was commonplace. Peoples had find creative ways to entertain themselves! The original owners sold the Sky-port in the 1970's, but its reputation for delicious fried seafood and plane watching remained. The diner also became a popular stop for truck drivers traveling Route 110 in their rigs. The Dubois family purchased the restaurant in 1981 and began a series of renovations completely changing the look of the restaurant. The name and image changed as well. It was renamed Jackson's Restaurant, after an earlier pizza shop the Dubois family had owned, and it became a full-fledged family oriented restaurant, no longer a small diner for truckers stopping for lunch. Jackson's has also garnered a reputation for functions, and has become a popular spot where brides-to-be have showers and rehearsal dinners. The seaplane airport has moved a bit further down the river. However, Jackson's still takes advantage of its beautiful location along the Merrimack. Many request window seats to enjoy the views of boaters, water skiers and families of ducks. Patrons also enjoy alfresco dining on the deck along the river. Today, the Dubois family, Leo, Susan, Gary, Glenn, Ellen and Sheila, are all involved in the daily operations of the restaurant. Today restaurant goers can enjoy a variety of meals or appetizers choose from such as Baked Mushroom Caps with Seafood Stuffing, or try their Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail with Cocktail Sauce. When the Army Acts like the Police
By Amber Pawlik Both Ralph Nader and Michael Moore were on The O’reilly Factor this week saying to deal with terrorism, they would target Osama bin Laden. Rejecting the invasion of Afghanistan, Moore said he ―would have gone after the man that killed 3,000 people.‖ Ralph Nader said on O’reilly, July 26, 2004: ―OK, 9/11 happens. What do you got to do? You got to go after the backers of the attackers, because the attackers are no more. They committed suicide. So you go after them under the doctrine of hot pursuit. It's very important to do this under international law, which allows us, with other nations, to send commandos, spies and bribes to zero in on wherever we think the backers are.‖What the left wants our military to do, and O’Reilly called Ralph Nader on it, is to act like a police force. A friend of mine made an excellent point once. He told me about Randy Weaver, the man whose wife son and dog were killed by federal agents, after they invaded his property over a minor firearms charge (in which they entrapped Weaver). That was on August 21, 1992. Not much longer after this was Waco, in which the government invaded a private complex in military like fashion. Even after this was the case of Elian Gonzalez, in which a 6 yr old boy was taken from his home at gunpoint. My friend made the point: the police are starting to act like an army. The left wants the police to act like an army and the army to act like the police. This should frighten Americans. A government whose police acts like an army and army acts like the police is one that will invade its own people but leave them defenseless against foreign enemies. How justice is served is answered by philosophy (and reality always delivers mounds of proof to verify correct conclusions). How governments organize themselves is based on the entity’s involved (men or nations) nature and self-interest. Among individual men, a government should govern them, and disputes should be handled by going through a legal process, i.e. the two men cannot take justice in their own hands. If men lived in anarchy, forced to essentially be their own protective government, they would turn into thugs at the mercy of any roaming gang. We would revert to primitivism and nothing would ever be built, invented or produced, as long term planning would be impossible. Among nations, no such ruling entity should exist. Whereas man would die and stagnate if protecting his own life was in his hands, a nation would perish if protecting its own borders wasn’t in its own hands. A nation, an entire collection of men living under the same government, is capable of raising a force to protect itself. To live under a higher government would do nothing but leave it vulnerable. The left wants to pervert this. Ask yourself why. Who benefits if a government, such as the United States, is cut off at the knees, unable to take out other malignant regimes, but has the ability to invade its own citizens with 400 agents over a minor charge? It is obvious who benefits and who loses if this rational form of justice is perverted. If justice is perverted like this, tyrants will flourish and regular citizens will be cowered into submission. Why does the left scream about U.S ―imperialism‖ in Iraq but never mention the torture and abuse Saddam put his own people through? Why are they more adamant about the ―rights‖ of Iraqi war prisoners than they are of American citizens? To leftists, Osama bin Laden, who many leftists have said should be ―innocent until proven guilty‖ has more rights than Randy Weaver. If you want to preserve your rights – your right to your own life, liberty and happiness – you must fight your individual rights at home and for a self-governing nation with a strong military to protect you from enemies (who wish to see you dead) abroad. www.amberpawlik.com amber@amberpawlik.com
SEX & LIES Sex Secrets All Men Keep No matter how well you know your guy (or think you do), there are things he's never going to share. Some are innocent; others...well, you might want to sit down. LISA BURKE When you first start dating a guy, it makes sense that he would conceal stuff he's not particularly proud of—his disorderly apartment, his hairy back, his mother's daily phone calls. But by the time you're a serious couple—maybe even living together—you probably assume you know your bedmate's every last habit, flaw, and idiosyncrasy. Don't be so sure. According to new research published in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, one in 10 men are harboring a serious sexual secret. "There are two kinds of secrets guys keep," says Les Parrott, author of Crazy Good Sex. "Things they wish their wives or girlfriends would understand but are scared they won't, and things they're just plain trying to get away with." With that in mind, we polled hundreds of men to learn what they hide at each stage in a relationship and enlisted experts to offer their insights. We discovered there's a decent chance your man is keeping at least one dirty secret. Read on to find out what, if anything, you should do about it. When You're Dating... What he's hiding: The number of women he's had sex with Some men exaggerate to sound more sexually experienced; others lowball so you don't dismiss them as players. "Men know that if they confess to a large number of partners, it sends the message that they're unlikely to commit to one. That is, to you," says David Buss, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and author of The Evolution of Desire. What you should do Take him at his word, but protect yourself. Be vigilant about using a condom every time you have sex—at least until you've both been tested for STDs and you feel secure that you're in a committed relationship. If you do somehow discover that he's deceived you about his sexual history, get it out in the open, but give him a chance to explain. "He could have fibbed out of embarrassment, insecurity, or sincere interest in you," says Ian Kerner, Ph.D., author of She Comes First: The Thinking Man's Guide to Pleasuring a Woman. What he's hiding: He looks at porn—maybe a lot According to a study at Brigham Young University, 87 percent of men have looked at some form of porn in the past year, and one in five help themselves to X-rated fare daily. Men like to look at naked chicks—no surprise there—but what is shocking is how quickly they can become dependent on those erotic images. A powerful pleasure cocktail of endorphins and epinephrine (hormones responsible for arousal and alertness) are released while a man watches porn, Parrott says. And that feeling can become addictive. What you should do Occasional porn isn't the problem; it only becomes a wrecking ball when it starts to intrude on your sex life together. "The two big questions are 'Is it interfering with your life and relationship?' and 'Is he using it to avoid something?'" says sex therapist Sandor Gardos, Ph.D. If he actively hides his material and makes excuses to avoid having sex, be concerned. Broach the subject when you're calm and rational. "Angry accusations never go over well," Gardos says. Another tactic: Suggest watching together. "It becomes compulsive when he feels like he has to hide it," he says. So if you're willing to share it with him, you'll take the compulsion out of the equation. Plus, experts say, viewing erotic images together can enhance your sex life. What he's hiding: He compares you to his last girlfriend It's true: Your guy whips out his ex ruler and measures everything about you: your looks, your bedroom abilities, how well you get along with his friends. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. "It's normal to make comparisons, and an ex is his most recent reference point," says Christopher Blazina, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Tennessee State University. What you should do Nothing. He'll inevitably come to the conclusion that you blow away anyone else he's ever been with, and the silent comparathon raging in his mind will cease. When you should do something: if he frequently blurts out things like "My ex always..." or "My last girlfriend never..." It's not necessarily a sign that he hasn't gotten over her, but it can still be hurtful, Blazina says. When that happens, it's fair to tell him, for example, that you don't want him bringing up the details of their trip to Mexico. Chances are, he's not even aware he's been doing it and will be happy to stop.
The Secret Language of Close Couples Why cutesy names and code words may be the key to super gluing your bond
Leslie Goldman Lovey-dovey language—even your own—can be so corny it makes you want to puke. But researchers have found that it might actually serve a purpose: Pet names and code phrases pave the way to a playful, resilient, and satisfying relationship. One study on couples' "insider language" published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships reported that the more goofy names, made-up terms, and covert requests for nooky a couple used, the higher their relationship satisfaction tended to be. The quantity of sweet or silly nothings you utter on any given day may be even more important than the quality, says Jamie Turndorf, Ph.D., a New York City relationship therapist. Studies have found that couples who maintain a five-to-one ratio of positive to negative communications are far more likely to remain happy. "Using nicknames and made-up language is an easy way to inject positive communication into everyday life," Turndorf says. In fact, it's probably the single easiest thing you can do to keep your relationship going strong. Whether it's baby talk or coded conversation ("It's getting chilly." Translation: "Let's leave now."), the overall message is: The two of you are tight. "You are saying, symbolically, that you care enough about the other person and the relationship to develop your own way of speaking," says Carol Bruess, Ph.D., the director of family studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a co-author of Belly Button Fuzz and Bare-Chested Hugs: What Happy Couples Do. "You've got your own private world, your own mini culture."
The Meaning Behind a Moniker Pet names also create a boundary, says Pat Love, co-author of How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It. "It's a way to identify the relationship as exclusive," she says. "It's like an auditory marker." When people around you overhear your cutesy conversation, they know you're committed to each other. The inside banter can also serve as a fast-forward button, says Lillian Glass, Ph.D., a communication and body-language expert based in Los Angeles. Sometimes, after a rough day at work, you just want to come home, flop onto the couch, and pop open a bottle of something smooth and red. How great is it when your partner knows that "the usual" is code for "My imbecile boss just wasted six hours of my life with mindless busy work and I'm really in a mood right now"? Statement, sentiment, and your current mental state all rolled into two words—no need to relive the whole disastrous day blow by blow. Personalized lingo not only can bond a relationship—it can bail it out, too. University of Western Ontario psychology professor Lorne Campbell, Ph.D., has researched the use of humor during conflicts. In a study published in the journal Personal Relationships, Campbell found that when goofing around is used to help resolve disputes, it ultimately strengthens the relationship. Tossing in an inside joke during a would-be brawl not only relieves the tension, he says, but brings you back to the present.
Cementing Memories It's no coincidence that new couples give each other nicknames that are sugary and food-related. Cupcake. Honeybun. Peaches. "Sweet is an unequivocally positive descriptor," Glass says. "You're comparing the other person with a treat—something special that you look forward to every time." As a relationship matures and trust builds, you may develop pet names that refer to a feature or personality trait of your partner (like calling your boyfriend Leo when his beard grows shaggy and out of control). That kind of "just between us" language drives home how well you know each other. Every shared experience, Glass says, opens doors for more nicknames and inside jokes, which become earmarks for your most meaningful memories. Whether he calls you Rodeo, after the horseback-riding trip you took on your first anniversary, or you call him Speed Racer, for the time he drove 90 mph to get you to the airport on time, the names are a way of tracking your romantic history. "You have a word that signifies a time, a date, and a place, and it takes you back to that moment," Glass says. Of course, for a nickname to work, both parties have to be happy with it. If it annoys you when your man calls you Stinky in memory of your bad bout with Indian food last fall, that's definitely not going to bring you any closer. "You're putting your trust in the other person to treat you in a safe and intimate way," Glass says. "Tread carefully."
The One Must-Say Phrase What if you and your man would rather cut your tongues out than utter a ridiculous nickname? Don't worry; you're not doomed. Worse, Turndorf says, is a relationship in which "I love you" is hardly ever said. Still, she encourages couples to come up with as many catchphrases as they can stand. They don't have to be gooey and sweet—funny is fine. But one big red flag to watch for is if your partner stops calling you by your pet name, Love says. "It's like calling a naughty kid by his full name. It sends the signal 'I'm not being intimate with you anymore.'" When that happens, it's time to figure out what in your relationship needs fixing.
Bottom line: Having a shared language can only help strengthen the connection you feel with your partner. So swallow your pride and bring on the shmoopy.

British Woman Will Not Be Executed Due To Pregnancy
A pregnant British woman accused of trafficking heroin in Laos will not face the death penalty because the law bans executing expectant convicts, a government spokesman said Tuesday. The trial of 20-year-old Samantha Orobator would not be held until next week so that an "appropriate lawyer" could be found to defend her, Foreign Ministry spokesman Khenthong Nuanthasing said. It had been expected to start this week. "It might take some time," Khenthong said by phone from the Laotian capital Vientiane, adding his government would try its best to expedite the case. He said the Justice Ministry was compiling a list of lawyers who must be Lao nationals from which she could choose. CONT: PAGE 31

Orobator was arrested in August and charged with trying to smuggle 1.5 pounds (680 gram of heroin in her luggage. Anyone caught in possession of over 1.1 pounds (500 grams) subject to the death penalty, Khenthong said. "But there is another provision of criminal la that the death penalty will not apply to pregnant women." The circumstances of Orobator pregnancy remained unclear, though Khenthong said she told authorities in an interview aft her arrest that she had become pregnant by her boyfriend. The British legal charity Repriev said Orobator was five months pregnant, but because she had no access to counsel they cou not confirm that. A doctor sent by the Australian Embassy who visited Orobator in prison March told Reprieve that she is due to give birth in September.
Reprieve issued a statement Tuesday saying its representative, Anna Morris, had been barre from entering Phonthong prison despite having been scheduled to meet Orobato "I am deeply frustrated by the lack of access to this vulnerable young woman. This is pr venting Reprieve from obtaining firsthand knowledge of her welfare and how she is bein treated in prison," the statement quoted Morris as saying. "We urge the Lao authorities to a low us access to speak to Samantha as promised, to appoint her a Laotian lawyer and to co duct a fair and open trial."In a response Khenthong said, "the Lao Government never denie access to Samantha," and that the group should recognize Laos "has its own law and rule for seeing foreign prisoners. Morris said Reprieve made a formal request to see Orobat through Britain's Foreign Office before she left for Laos. BUSINESS & YOUR MONEY The Magazine Isn't Dying
It’s just the badly motivated ones that are going under. BY : HARRY FRANKLIN/ BUSINESS WRITER
It seems fitting that on March 11, a week after the Dow Jones industrial average hit its lowest mark since 1997 and shares of Citigroup slid to less than $1 each, the magazine publisher Rodale announced it was shuttering Best Life. The five-yearold magazine had been positioned as a lifestyle title for wealthy older men who were too mature for the babes-and-abs pitch of Rodale's most successful brand, Men's Health. But in a time of dismal economic headlines and a culture newly attuned to thrift, a magazine that celebrated the carefree consumerism of the bubble years with cover lines like "7 Secret Wealth Builders" and "Upgrade Your Image Instantly" seemed like a relic from a bygone era. The news of Best Life's demise came on the same day that American Express Publishing announced it was folding Travel+Leisure Golf, an 11-year-old spinoff of its venerable travel title. Taken together, the latest magazine failures signaled to many publishing observers that magazines—long thought to be partly insulated from the digital forces battering the newspaper industry—are locked in their own death spiral. For evidence, they point out that since last March, more than two dozen major magazines have folded. But a closer look at the types of magazines that have closed reveals a more nuanced and, in many respects, hopeful portrait of the magazine business.
According to a list compiled by Advertising Age, titles that have shut down in the past year come from the shelter, technology, travel, luxury, and teen categories. The reason for each category's challenges are obvious, from a meltdown in the housing sector to teenagers' wholesale abandonment of print for Facebook and Twitter. Yet the general conclusion that many extrapolate from these recent shutdowns is wrong. It's not that magazines are dying; it's that magazines that were created solely for advertising or market-share purposes are. New magazine titles often fail from a combination of bad timing, bad thinking, and a bad choice of brands to extend. CONTINUED PAGE 34
Put simply, there are too many mediocre magazines (as anyone who gazes at the newsstand at Barnes and Nobles would conclude). In one way, publishers are suffering from the same tendencies as traders binging on mortgage-backed securities: When the advertising market in a particular genre begins to rain really hard, publishers respond by trying to create more buckets, instead of working to find the next bucket where passion resides. The reality is that once a market is mature enough to support a national magazine, chances are it has already peaked. During the last boom, publishers conceived titles as advertising plays and targeted the areas of a rapidly expanding credit bubble. It's not surprising, then, that shelter titles sprouted up as the housing market inflated or that Condé Nast launched Portfolio, its business title, just as the finance bubble peaked in spring 2007. (Disclosure: I was a staff writer at Portfolio.) In many ways, Portfolio signified the strategy embraced by publishers during the run-up. Back in August 2005, when hedge-fund managers were the new rock stars, Condé Nast wanted to take a big piece of the advertising pie long dominated by Fortune, Forbes, and Business Week. Officially, Condé Nast's position was that Portfolio would reinvent the business category with more ambitious writing, photography, and design. But, fundamentally, Portfolio was a corporate move designed to develop a new market of business-to-business advertising for Si Newhouse's magazine empire, which had always counted on fashion and luxury categories for a majority of its ad revenue.
market of business-to-business advertising for Si Newhouse's magazine empire, which had always counted on fashion and luxury categories for a majority of its ad revenue. Publishers don't just look to new titles to grow their business. They also seek to leverage existing titles into new categories. Now, with advertising spending on the skids, spinoffs are another major casualty of the magazine. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. In 1974, Time Inc. spun off People magazine as a standalone title from Time, launching the modern era of celebrity journalism and creating a title that generates $1.5 billion in annual advertising revenue. More recently, in 2005 Condé Nast launched Domino, its hip shelter title. When the company announced earlier this year that it was closing the title amidst the worst housing slump since the 1930s, my girlfriend and her friends mourned the decision along with thousands of its devoted readers. Although Domino couldn't succeed financially in this climate, its knowing-but-friendly approach to home design gave readers the sense that the magazine was created expressly for. them and not to service ad buyers.
10 things dating sites won't tell you Will you click with someone you meet online? Maybe, but some services don't make the process of finding a match any easier. BY: MELLISA JEAN 1. 'Keep your hopes high and your expectations low' Once considered taboo, online dating is no longer a dirty little secret. In fact, dating sites now average more than 20 million unique visitors a month, according to comScore, an Internet data provider. With so many singles unabashedly searching for Mr. or Ms. Right online, it's taken away the stigma that Internet dating is a sign of desperation, says Lisa Clampitt, the president of VIP Life, a New York matchmaking service. The promise of tapping a vast dating pool has people paying $30 to $60 a month to join top sites such as Match.com and Yahoo Personals or smaller, niche outfits like DateMyPet.com, where users upload photos of themselves with their pets. And for many, it works: About 2% of marriages in the U.S. today are the result of an eHarmony connection, at least according to a Harris Interactive survey commissioned by eHarmony. But before you log on, here's a reality check: The odds aren't in your favor, social-sciences researcher Jeana Frost says. "People respond to so many attributes that have to be experienced," she says. "You can't just find someone compatible by using a search button."
2. 'We've yet to meet 2 people who aren't a potential match' Amanda Swanson, 28, of Massachusetts joined eHarmony, thinking she'd meet men who shared her interests. Despite the elaborate questionnaire, she says, eHarmony tried to set her up with a daredevil type who liked skydiving. "I would never do something like that," Swanson says. (An eHarmony spokesman says it's up to members to review and communicate with their assigned matches to determine whether the right chemistry exists.) Some sites such as eHarmony and Chemistry.com use complex formulas to pair up their members. But critics say it's fuzzy math. These formulas are kept under wraps for competitive reasons, so outside experts aren't able to vet them. And while many people think these surveys will help them find a match, "no one knows if they actually work," says Robert Epstein, the author of the upcoming book "Making Love: How Couples Learn to Love and You Can Too." If you really want individualized matchmaking, experts say, then consider a personal matchmaker. They're more expensive, with services starting around $1,000, but they know their clients well and take responsibility for any mismatches.
3. 'Everyone's lying about something' When Sophia Price of Tallahassee, Fla., met a man through Match.com who said he was a business owner, she expected him to look the part. She says she began to have doubts when he showed up on their date with holes in his clothes. But the bigger jolt came when a waitress recognized him and asked about his girlfriend. Whether or not Price's date was being truthful, deception and courting have been going steady for a long time. So it's no surprise some online suitors stretch the truth to get a date. For example, some users lie about their age to show up in more search results, which is why there are eight times as many 29-year-old women than 30- to 34-year-old women on dating sites, according to a study by Epstein. Talk back: Is speed dating worth the cost? But most lies in the online dating universe are pretty small, says Nicole Ellison, an assistant professor at Michigan State University. "People tend to describe their ideal self rather than how they really are," she says. That accounts for adding an extra inch to your height or saying you love to work out when you really haven't hit the gym in weeks. Bottom line: Keep an open mind, since setting your search fields too narrowly can eliminate a lot of possible matches, Ellison says.
4. 'We don't have as many members as it seems' Many pay-to-play dating sites let you create a profile and peruse other subscribers for free, with the catch being that if you want to contact someone, you have to join. Unfortunately, there's no way for members of a site to tell whether the profiles they're seeing belong to paid subscribers or to mere browsers who've posted a profile but haven't joined -- and thus aren't accessible. That means when you get no reply, you're left scratching your head: Was she not interested or just unable to respond to you? Either way, Epstein chalks it up to one of the basic hazards of Internet dating: "It's very easy to get hurt or be disappointed online." So how many posted profiles at paid dating sites belong to active members? Experts say that, at best, subscriber services convert between 10% and 15% of browsers into members. That means 85% or more of the profiles at a subscriber site could belong to unreachable browsers. The problem is, there's no incentive for the sites to change, since the more profiles they list, the better they look. How to avoid the heartbreak? One way is to stick to free sites such as Plentyoffish.com or OKCupid, where every profile you see belongs to a member.
5. 'Fall in love too quickly and you could end up broke' As if navigating between the white lies and the false starts of the online dating world weren't enough, you also have to be on the lookout for scams. Just like every Internet venture, online dating is full of folks looking to make a quick buck. These con artists "prey on people who fall for pretty faces on the Internet," says Brian Erickson, the director of operations at Mate1, an online dating service. The romance scam is the most prevalent on dating sites and the hardest to stop, Erickson says. It happens when male members start getting messages from a too-attractive-to-be-true woman who says she's from a distant location-. The two will hit it off a little too quickly, then she'll want to come visit but needs a plane ticket or money for gas. The mark sends her the money -- and never hears from her again. Recession brings out the scammers When you click with someone online, "it's easy to say, 'Wow, this could turn into something,'" says Erickson, but if someone asks you for money, that should send up an immediate red flag. Another giveaway: When a profile says the person is local but you find out she's actually in Eastern Europe. 6. 'Our guarantees are only guaranteed to keep you here' According to the statistics for online dating success, you're just as likely to meet your perfect match while shopping for groceries. So how can sites such as Match.com and Yahoo Personals offer "guarantees" and six-month "promises"? Because these assurances aren't about finding love. If you read the fine print, you'll see they're careful not to promise you'll meet that certain someone -- just that if you don't during your six-month subscription, you'll get more time to keep trying, on the house. You don't even have the option of a refund. (Match.com had no comment. Yahoo emphasized the success of its six-month program, adding that if subscribers want to quit, they have "the option of removing their profile. Dating sites do this because it's an easy, low-cost way to keep up traffic and a great marketing tool, says David Evans, an industry consultant. But some people who've done a stint in the online dating world have no desire to go back. "I get knots in my stomach just thinking about it," says Match.com veteran Claire Berger, a Florida resident who recalls a litany of outdated photographs and interminable first dates that never led to anything. 7. 'Don't expect quick results' You've signed up with a service, crafted your profile and even cleared your weekend. So you're all set to meet your match, right? Unfortunately, it's not that simple. "You can't just throw up a profile and expect to go on a date," says Mark Brooks, an industry consultant for online dating services. The world of online dating has its own rhythms and rituals, which often take some time. How to get things moving? For starters, say less in your profile. It sounds counterintuitive -- you want your potential dates to know you're an ardent heavy-metal fan, right? Not necessarily: One study found that the less specific a profile was, the more responses it got. "People tended to fill in the blanks with things they liked," says Frost, the social-sciences researcher. Also, take advantage of sites that offer a chat feature. It's a more natural and faster way for two people to get to know each other than traded e-mails. Once you're ready to meet the person offline, most experts suggest doing it sooner rather than later. And keep that first date light. Get together for coffee or a beer -- in other words, something less committal than dinner. That way, if there's no connection, you can easily leave. "You're going to know by the second sip of your latte if there's something there," says Trish McDermott, the "VP of Love" at Engage.com
8. 'Once you log in, you're pretty much on your own' Not everyone who signs up for an online dating service has the same experience meeting their potential matches. According to experts, around one in 10 users is getting what's commonly expected -- that is, they're readily communicating with other members, toward the goal of dating in the real world -- but the majority aren't so lucky. That's because 10% of the people using the service are receiving 90% of the messages. What gives? Some people could simply use more help than others, Brooks says, but good luck getting it from the dating service you're using. "Online dating sites' biggest flaw is they don't offer service of any kind," he says. Rather, most of them function more like a giant virtual bar or nightclub. If you find yourself among the majority of users who aren't having the online dating experience they hoped for, one alternative is to try sites that feature community-based matchmaking, where friends and family can help you with your search. What makes these sites work is that they mirror real life, where "the community provides support and reality checks," Epstein says.
9. 'You might not need all these extras, but we do' Despite its booming popularity and the widespread acceptance of Internet dating, the industry as a whole isn't exactly seeing tremendous profit growth these days. In fact, total revenue for the online dating industry was projected to reach $1.18 billion in 2008, less than a 1% increase from 2007, according to IBIS World, a market research firm. Besides the overall dampening of consumer spending, the Internet dating market has simply become saturated, Brooks says. That means online dating services have had to start getting creative. One way some sites are looking to bring in more income is by offering an array of cost-extra features, such as alerts that let you know when the e-mails you've sent have been opened, visually highlighted profiles in search results so that yours can stand out from the pack, even background checks on the subscriber of your choice. But do these sorts of extras really work? Anything that's going to help you stand out in search results is going to help you get dates, McDermott says. But, she adds, "technology is never going to solve all the problems people have with dating."
10. 'Good luck trying to break up with us' If it seems like meeting someone online is difficult, just wait until you try to cancel your subscription. The most common complaint to the Better Business Bureau regarding online dating services is that they charge your credit card after you've canceled. There's even a class-action lawsuit pending in a federal court in northern Texas against True.com that alleges the company billed its former subscribers service fees after those subscribers attempted to cancel their subscriptions. (The company says it doesn't comment on continuing litigation.) How to quit the gym (or anything) What to do if you're being charged for an account you thought was canceled? Since the dating sites have little incentive to fix a profitable error, they might not be as responsive as you'd hope. If you're having trouble getting an Internet dating service to refund your money, contact your credit card company -- it may be willing to remove the charge. A spokeswoman for American Express says that as far as her company is concerned, canceling an online dating account is like returning a sweater. "You tried it but changed your mind," she says.
TECHNOLOGY TODAY DMCA conviction for seller of bogus Microsoft product keys BY: BRIAN MATTHEWS
Federal authorities accused Adonis Gladney of selling counterfeit Microsoft product keys and on Thursday he was convicted of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Gladney, 24, is believed to be the first person convicted for DMCA violations dealing with the circumvention of security protections on software, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian. Typically, product keys are used to activate software and are printed on Certificate of Authenticity labels that accompany legitimate products. Missakian, who prosecuted the case in Los Angeles along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy Wu, said the conviction is a sign that administrators at the U.S. Justice Department plan to take these kinds of DMCA violations "more seriously." "The defendant couldn't have executed his scheme without counterfeit access keys," Missakian said. "(The keys) allowed purchasers to load software on multiple computers." Among those who unwittingly purchased phony keys from Gladney is the United States Marine Corp. Gladney's attorney, Frank Sanes Jr., declined to comment. Convicted of one count of violating the DMCA and three counts of mail fraud, Gladney could face several years in prison, Missakian said, adding that Gladney's prison term will likely be based on the amount of monetary damage he caused. "At this point we're still counting," Missakian said. Gladney, who resides in Los Angeles, would advertise software licenses in large volume on his Web sites, abovegroundsolutions.com or agsolutionsspc.com. Customers paid their money and received licenses, which prosecutors say Gladney claimed legally covered between 25 and 750 users. Gladney would then ship them a CD loaded with software that authorities say was not designated as a retail product for sale to the general public, such as software that typically comes bundled in PCs. "The licenses were essentially thin air," Missakian said. The FBI, which spearheaded the investigation on behalf of the Electronic Crimes Task Force, a group that includes several law enforcement agencies, said that Gladney would obtain key codes and then tweak them so he could use them over and over. "By repeatedly using and distributing the same key codes on multiple products," an FBI agent wrote in court documents, "Gladney is circumventing one of Microsoft's primary security features for legitimate product activation in violation of (trafficking in unauthorized access devices)." According to the FBI, Gladney managed to turn his illegal enterprise into a cash cow while he was barely 20. Gladney told agents he had earned more than $3 million. WE ARE THE WORLD 25 YEARS LATER BY:JASON ABDOO/ STAFF WRITER "We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. Following Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" project in the UK, an idea for the creation of an American benefit single for African famine relief came from activist Harry Belafonte, who, along with fundraiser Ken Kragen, was instrumental in bringing the vision to reality. Several musicians were contacted by the pair, before Jackson and Richie were assigned the task of writing the song. Following several months of working together, the duo completed the writing of "We Are the World" one night before the song's first recording session, in early 1985. The last recording session for the song was held on February 28, 1985. The historic event brought together some of the most famous artists in the music industry at the time. The song was released on March 7, 1985, as the only single from the album. A worldwide commercial success, it topped music charts throughout the world and became the fastest-selling American pop single in history.
The first ever single to be certified multi-platinum, "We Are the World" received a 4× certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. However, the song garnered mixed reviews from journalists, music critics and the public. Fans enjoyed hearing racially and musically diverse recording artists singing together on one track, and felt satisfied in buying "We Are the World", knowing that the money was going to charity. Other individuals, including many commentators in the rock press, were disappointed that the song did not challenge listeners as to why famines occur in the first place, and felt that the lyrics were self-aggrandizing. Honored numerous times — including three Grammy Awards, one American Music Award and a People's Choice Award — the song was promoted with a critically received music video, a home video, a special edition magazine, a simulcast, and several books, posters and shirts. The promotion and merchandise aided the success of "We Are the World", which was eventually named the biggest-selling single of all time. As of 2009, it has sold more than 20 million units and raised over $63 million for humanitarian aid in Africa and the US. CONTINUED PAGE 42
WE ARE THE WORLD CONTINUED "We Are the World" has demonstrated that diverse musicians can productively work together, and has further influenced the movement within pop music to create songs that address humane concerns. Following the devastation caused by the magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, a remake of the song by another all-star cast of singers was recorded on February 1, 2010 in Hollywood, California, and will be released to benefit the impoverished country.
WE ARE THE WORLD AGAIN A number of today's biggest stars gathered on Monday night to record "We Are the World — 25 for Haiti," the classic 1985 charity single re-imagined as a benefit for earthquake relief. Though song co-writer Michael Jackson passed away last summer, his presence was most definitely felt in the studio, where fellow co-writer Lionel Richie and producer Quincy Jones had assembled more than 80 singers, rappers and actors for the new version. To make sure that listeners feel his presence too, Janet Jackson will be representing her brother in the new recording. "She's doing Michael's part in the middle the same part Michael did," Jones told the press. "She's representing Michael." Many of those involved on Monday said MJ's part in the original will always remain their favorite. "My favorite part of the song — it would be the bridge [when Michael comes in]," said Mya, who hinted that Jackson's voice might make it onto this version too. "I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to share. ... We do hope [to have Michael's voice on the track]." "I was not born yet, but the song has had a huge impact on me," Jordin Sparks said. "And I've always loved Michael's love for the world and for the Earth and for other people and to help and give back." Celine Dion, who paid tribute to Jackson at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, noted that by re-recording the song, they are not only helping the people of Haiti but also remembering the passion Jackson had for helping those in need. "In a way it was because of him I learned English. I had my posters in my bedroom when I was a young, young kid," she recalled.
WE ARE THE WORLD CONTINUED "The atmosphere [in the studio] is amazing. People are very touched to be there. We're talking about somebody who was living through music and his passion was to try to help and change the world through his lyrics and what he was doing." Akon, who worked on music with Jackson before his death, fondly remembered stories Jackson told him about working on the original "We Are the World." "The wild part about it, Michael used to tell me stories about making the 'WATW' song and then working with Lionel," he said. "I never thought I'd be in a position to be remaking it and actually be able to tell the story myself one day." Richie and Jones were quick to point out that if Jackson were still alive, he'd want to be just as involved with the song as he was 25 years ago, though maybe in a different role. "I know it's hard to believe, but if Michael were, alive he'd stand behind the scenes," Richie said.
