To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. You're just a click away from looking at some more of his work and arranging an informal chat about what's on your mind.

District Councillor Report

Remembrance Commemorations I am sure that for all of us the weekend of 10/11 November was memorable in many ways. Towns, villages and churches all played their part in remembering the fallen of the great war and indeed the second world war. Like myself many of us would have been busy supporting our local memorial events so we could not get down to Sunny Sands Folkestone to see the very poignant Pages of the Sea tableau but watching it on TV still left a lasting impression on my mind.

Area Officers Our Area officers are up and running and have tackled over 700 target areas in the District cleaning up graffiti, litter and other tidy up jobs. If you have any areas within your community that could do with a cleanup please contact myself or my fellow Ward District Councillors stuart.peall@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk ; Philip.Martin@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk.

Morrisons Cheriton Following the devastating fire, the District Council has pledged support to Morrisons to help them get up and running again a.s.a.p Morrisons have assured the council that no jobs would be placed at risk as a result of the fire and that they would be supporting their employees in the aftermath of the incident. Folkestone & Hythe District Council will now be working with Morrisons to help them get back to business as usual, as quickly as possible. In the meantime, a bus services to the store in Dover will be provided for staff and customers alike. Cllr David Monk, Leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council, said the council will do all it can to assist the store in reopening as soon as possible. He said: "I'd like to thank all those council staff who were involved in the swift response to the incident and who worked with emergency services. This helped ensure that everyone was safe and the incident caused minimal disruption."

Christmas Fayre The season has started and I am looking forward to visiting the forthcoming events at Georges Barn. Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet Member for Special Projects 19

From your County Councillor I often write about the financial challenge facing KCC so I’m delighted that the 2018 Budget contained good news for local government. We even got an acknowledgement of our work. Chancellor Philip Hammond said, “Local government has made a significant contribution to repairing the public finances.” In fact local government has made the biggest contribution to the public sector savings over the last 8 years and KCC, one of the largest councils, has saved £640m. The Chancellor went on to announce extra funding for both social care and roads. KCC’s share of this amounts to around £28m. We still need to make savings to balance next year’s budget but we are no longer facing the prospect of reducing or removing services that would certainly be noticed. The Santa at the Festive Craft Fayre extra funding for roads will enable us to do more resurfacing and just as soon as the weather allows this programme will begin next year. Please keep reporting potholes (and get a reference number in case progress needs to Kevin Golding at the Festive Craft too be chased) through the winter months. Emergency repairs will be made but work done in the wet and cold is less likely to provide a long term fix. If a pothole reappears then it needs reporting again. Ring 03000 41 81 81 or use the website and pinpoint the spot on the interactive map. By the time you read this, KCC should have launched a consultation on library opening Karen Lloyd also at the Festive Craft hours. Other parts of the country have seen widespread closure of libraries but in Kent we still have a network of 99 libraries, a mobile library service, home delivery of books for the housebound and an e-book lending service. We have made savings through self service check in/out and making more use of the library buildings for other services such as the registrars. Now we are reviewing the hours of opening so that they better match demand. (This 21

does not affect the mobile libraries which went through the same process two years ago.) There will be copies of the consultation in the libraries themselves and online or ask me for a copy. Locally I have attended the Parish Council meeting on 12 November and visited the Festive Craft Fayre at the Elham Valley Line Trust that took place over two weekends in November. This Fayre is different from so many others as it not only sells handcrafted goods but you can see the craftspeople at work producing them. It’s also a great atmosphere with many stallholders and helpers in costume. EVLT is one example of the organisations in the village that rely on volunteers and with Christmas coming this is a good time to thank all those in the village who do so much including the EVLT, the Parish Council, the Village Hall Committee, the Friends of Newington Church, the local clubs and societies and of course David Cowell who edits this newsletter. Your efforts are much appreciated. Merry Christmas to you all. Susan Carey - Member for Elham, KCC. Valley District Councillor, North Downs West, Folkestone & Hythe District Council [Ed: thank you Susan for the photographs accompanying your report and also for the work you do to assist the Village]
