To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. You're just a click away from looking at some more of his work and arranging an informal chat about what's on your mind.

Daffodils for Military Road, Hythe Hythe in Bloom is supported by Hythe Civic Society. Over the past six years, Hythe in Bloom has provided daffodil bulbs which have been planted around the town by a team of volunteers. This year more than two thousand daffodil bulbs have been planted in Military Road, which will brighten up that part of the town come the spring. Sally Chesters, organiser of Hythe in Bloom, said: ‘Our group of volunteers does an amazing job every year planting bulbs around Hythe, bringing colour to the town in spring. It makes such a difference and the flowers bring local people a huge amount of pleasure.’ The photograph shows volunteers (l to r) Veronica Chapman, Sally Chesters, Nigel Chesters, Julia Morgan, Rosemary Griffiths and Carolyn Morgan in Military Road, Hythe. From your County Councillor We now have a 31 January deadline for leaving the EU though I expect the result of the General Election on 12 December will lead to further changes. Whatever happens KCC will ensure it has contingency plans in place and, together with Kent Police and other public sector partners in the Kent Resilience Forum, we will do our best to mitigate any disruption that may occur. These plans will also stand us in good stead for winter emergencies and I’d urge you all to do your own winter planning. In winter months I always have in my car an old blanket, wellington boots, a small shovel and a torch (a winter emergency kit would be a good Christmas present for any new driver). This is in addition to my year-round first aid kit, high visibility jacket and emergency triangle sign. It’s also a good idea to allow more time for your journey in winter so you can slow down if the road conditions aren’t good. Please report any potholes, fallen trees, blocked drains etc, You can report online anytime at www.kent.gov.uk or phone 03000 41 81 81 in office hours. If it’s an urgent problem, don’t go online but ring 03000 41 91 91 any time day or night. If anything is an immediate danger to life then use 999 to contact Kent Police. The largest share of KCC’s spending is on services for older people and those with a Learning Disability but we do also have Youth services and as your County Councillor I am at regular meetings to review these. Whilst most resources are targeted at helping young people at risk of going off the rails there are also services open to all young people. An example of these is our Tryangle awards which are open to anyone to nominate a young person across a range of categories from sporting and artistic achievement, courage, community service and more. Earlier this year I attended a Tryangle Award Ceremony held in Aldington for young people from both the Ashford and Folkestone & Hythe districts. It was heartening to see so many young people doing good things and being recognised for it. We also have a very active (non-political) Youth County Council who have had several campaigns including one against bullying. Many of our Kent Youth County Councillors are also involved in Headstart which has a wealth of online resources at www.headstartkent.org.uk for young people and their families. The Kent Youth County Council are currently working on a curriculum to help young people with ‘life skills’ which they feel is an area where schools could do more. We have started work at KCC for our next 5-year plan and services for our young people look likely to feature far more prominently than in the past. The new plan will be out for consultation in the New Year so that everyone 25

has a chance to comment and I hope you too will want to support our young people. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and thank the many people who make Newington a thriving community. Thank you to those who serve on the parish council, run the church, those who write for, edit or distribute this newsletter, the Gardening Society, the committee members of the village hall, the Elham Valley Line Trust and everyone who keeps the village organisations going for the benefit of all. Thank you to all the volunteers and all the good neighbours among us. You are more valued and appreciated than you can imagine. Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley

...and a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year to you too Susan.
