Kent's Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Scott is setting the strategic priorities for Kent Police. Earlier this year he published Safer in Kent: The Community Safety and Criminal Justice Plan. The plan is kept under constant review and is regularly updated in line with what local communities want. Mr Scott wants to know what matters most to you, so please take the time to fill out his short survey and encourage your friends, family and colleagues to fill one in as well. You do not need to provide your name or any contact details if you do not wish to. A summary of responses will be published on their web site when the Safer in Kent Plan is next updated. 3

From Newington Parish Council The Parish Council does not meet in December but I hope that the following may be of interest. Our thanks go to District Councillor David Godfrey who has kindly arranged funding for new parish notice board in Peene. Its installation will be carried out early in the new year. Thank you also to our County Councillor Susan Carey for arranging the replacement of the damaged salt bin at the bottom of Hill Lane in Peene. A lorry recently became bogged down on the highway verge at the junction of Newington Road and the A20. Photographs of the vehicle and damage caused were sent to KCC Highways. They have told us that repairs will be carried out and reimbursement of the costs will be sought from the haulage company. KCC’s Country Access Service have arranged the repair of a dangerous stile on Public Footpath HF33 which links Danton Lane and the bridleway running along the northern boundary of the Channel Tunnel Terminal. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 8thJanuary 2018 in Newington Village Hall starting at 7.00pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend. For any more information please contact Melvyn Twycross, the Acting Parish Clerk, at clerk.newingtonpc@aol.co.uk .

From your County Councillor A building the size and age of St Nicholas church in Newington is always in need of work and we are fortunate to have people who care for the building and churchyard. We have also been fortunate to have the support of the Ronald Cruickshank Foundation over the years. The charity is now winding up and in its final disbursements gave a generous £2,000 grant to Newington church. I have also allocated £500 from my KCC member grant towards the current project of repair to the beautiful stone boundary wall. This project will cost over £10,000 so further contributions are welcome. Thank you to those of you who took the time to respond to KCC’s budget consultation. Most people who took part supported the proposed rise in council tax of just under 4% (1.99% for all services plus a special levy of 2% ringfenced for social care). As explained in this consultation, we still need to make savings to cope with increased costs and rising demand for social care as more of our population reaches frail old age. Our Government grant is also decreasing and will be completely withdrawn by 2020. All discretionary expenditure is under scrutiny including the £7.5m a year we pay to the bus companies for services which do not cover their costs. 97% of the bus services in Kent run without a direct subsidy although they are indirectly supported through payments by KCC of £17m for travel on concessionary bus passes, as well as a £9m subsidy for travel passes for young people and £7m on home to school transport (these are annual figures). These payments will continue. There will be a specific consultation in early 2018 on the direct £7.5m subsidy for uneconomic bus services with a view to getting the bus companies to pick up more of these services themselves (they have been raising fares above inflation for the last five years) and looking at better ways of providing travel such as community run bus services and car/taxi sharing options. The routes which receive some subsidy for some of their services in the Shepway area are the 18A and the 17 (evenings). One of the ways we’ve been making savings over the last few years is making more of our services available through our website. School admissions are now handled almost entirely this way and we have over 3,000 web pages covering over 300 KCC services. Each month an average of 216,000 people contact the site and view 880,000 pages. There’s been an increase in use of the website by 36% over the last 5 years and more people are using their mobile phones to view the website. Please use the website for reporting problems you see on the highways. 16

continued over

(One of the Newington Parish Councillors recently did this to report a damaged salt bin in Peene which has now been replaced). There’s an interactive map which makes it easy to pinpoint a problem such as a pothole and you’ll be given a reference number which helps if you need to get me involved. Emergencies such as a tree blocking a road should be reported by phone to 03000 41 91 91 or if you think someone is in immediate danger then call the emergency services on 999. This is the time of year when we face some of the coldest and wettest weather so please allow yourself more time for your journey and for up to date information on Kent’s roads look at Kent Highways’ twitterfeed @KentHighways Susan Carey Member for Elham Valley

From the cutting-edge London design agency Here Design - writer and poet Philip Cowell, and award-winning designer Caz Hildebrand, author of The Herbarium, this playful, original, beautifully designed book brings to life the punctuation marks we use every day, including: The dashing dash So-called "quotation marks" The colon: and on and on. The shouty exclamation! The three dots of... (Not forgetting the brackets) And even more

The Grammar of Spice is one of the world’s missing books. It will change the way we understand spices and the role they play in defining not only our food but also our place in the world. The essence of each spice is explored in a brief history peppered with interesting anecdotes and tips, and accompanied by reproductions of surface decoration from Owen Jones’s original book, The Grammar of Ornament. The book is beautiful to look at and hold, packed with well-researched material, and will change the way a generation appreciates the incredible world of flavours and tastes that spices open up to us. Herbarium explores the histories, associations and uses of 100 herbs, as well as providing ideas for both food and wellbeing. Each entry features a specially commissioned illustration with texts that include the botanical name, place of origin, varieties and areas where the herb is most commonly grown. The essence of each herb is explored in a brief history peppered with interesting anecdotes, complemented by suggestions of classic combinations and helpful tips for gardeners. A reference section includes pieces on how to grow and keep herbs, seasonality and a map showing where our herbs are grown. A contemporary evolution of the traditional herbarium, presented in a fresh way for a younger audience and a new generation of cooks, Herbarium will expand readers’ knowledge, improve culinary skills and enhance their appreciation of the incredible world of tastes offered by herbs. 18

The Historic Houses Association (HHA) represents over 1,640 of the UK's privately and charitably owned historic houses, castles and gardens. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain's unique heritage. Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 24 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are over 45,000 Friends of the HHA. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes. The Association was established in 1973 to help owners conserve these wonderful places in the interests of the nation and carries out important lobbying, advisory and marketing work on behalf of Member properties.
