From your County Councillor I am very pleased to report that following an intensive three-week inspection by 12 inspectors looking at every aspect of KCCs Children’s Services OFSTED has assessed them as ‘Good’. Within the subcategories there was one area where there was further improvement needed to reach’ Good’ but overall the report is glowing (and available to read on our website). Considering the strains put on our services by the influx of Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children and the additional burden on public services of the large number of children placed in foster care in Kent by other local authorities this is a result that is really welcome. KCC has made protection and care of the vulnerable our top priority which has meant it has received extra funding whenever needed despite our financial pressures and the wish to do more in other areas such as improving our roads. The General Election result in our area is particularly interesting following so soon after the County Council election. I saw a lot of people during the campaign and was at both counts so was able to see the results from each ballot box before they were mixed together for counting. This area saw strong support for the Conservatives at both elections. The big difference was turnout which was 34% across the Shepway district for the County Council election but 68% for the Folkestone and Hythe constituency. The Conservative candidate and sitting MP, Damian Collins was returned with an increased share of vote (55% compared to 48% last time) and a larger majority. The latest casualty figures for Kent roads (including the motorways) show a drop in the number of fatalities from 55 to 48 but a rise in the number of people seriously injured from 652 to 930. The Police have changed their definition of ‘serious’ to encompass more. Looking further back to 2007 there were 94 casualties and 629 serious injuries and in 1997 109 fatalities and 1008 serious injuries so in the long term the downward trend continues. The vast majority of these incidents are due to driver behaviour with drink driving involved in one in six of all road deaths. Even one drink can impair driving and KCC will be running a campaign in June to discourage drinking any alcohol whilst driving and Kent Police will be increasing checks on drivers. Matthew Scott, Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner recently joined me at a Community Speedwatch at Etchinghill. He tells me that his consultation on priorities from the public showed people want more done to tackle bad driving and that in response he is asking Kent Police to step up action against speeding, use of mobile phones whilst driving and drink driving.
KCC/SDC stand with Susan Carey, David Godfrey, David’s wife Kim and two of their grandchildren
I was very pleased to be able to arrange and be part of a joint KCC and Shepway District Council stand at the Newington fete on 10 June. It’s always an enjoyable day with traditional games and some fun new ones (battery powered racing 16
pigs anyone?) and lots of local people running stands and taking part. The sun shone and people turned out in their droves and at one point the car park and overflow car park were full. It’s an important fundraiser for the village hall but just as important a great community event. Well done to all involved. Finally, if you know someone aged between 11 and 18 (or up to 25 if they have special needs) who should be recognised for trying their best then please nominate them for one of KCC’s Tryangle awards. There’s information about the wide ranging categories on KCC’s website and nominations close on 12 July. Karen Lloyd on the Milk the Cow game

The Historic Houses Association (HHA) represents over 1,640 of the UK's privately and charitably owned historic houses, castles and gardens. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain's unique heritage. Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 24 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are over 45,000 Friends of the HHA. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes. The Association was established in 1973 to help owners conserve these wonderful places in the interests of the nation and carries out important lobbying, advisory and marketing work on behalf of Member properties.

District Councillor Report As news about the dreadful tragedy at Grenfell Tower continues to unfold it is difficult to concentrate on local news and our thoughts are primarily with those families devastated by this awful disaster. Turning to somewhat brighter news I was recently invited to visit the site of the new homes under construction at Military road , Shorncliffe which is continuing apace and by Feb 2018 the first these affordable homes will be handed to East Kent housing to provide 35 one, two and three bed flats and houses which will be offered to local people through the housing list as part of Shepway’s commitment to provide affordable homes. I was particularly impressed by the thought that had gone into the design of some of the ground floor flats for wheel chair access. Otterpool Park. Shepway arranged a series of events between 22nd and 24th June at which members of the public could see the emerging ideas on the design and layout of the new garden town and to encourage ideas which could help shape this long term project. With one of our economic develop team I recently attended the National Infrastructure Forum at Excel where we were able to learn about some innovative “smart city” technology which will help us in our determination to provide a quality new town with emphasis on green space and the environment. Finally I cannot sign off without mentioning the annual Newington fete on 10th June which was a resounding success as always. My Shepway colleague and KCC Councillor Susan Carey has Kim Godfrey and grandchildren on kindly submitted a couple of photos including one the railway with my wife and two of our grandchildren who also enjoyed a ride on the Elham Valley Line trust miniature railway .
