As is customary when we go away, I would like to share our experience at a wonderful holiday home in the La Creuse area of central France. Located in a small hamlet called Gioux, Honeysuckle Cottage is well presented, comfortably furnished and nicely decorated accommodation for two. The cottage has its own garden with outside and undercover seating for meals, recliners and a circular swimming pool. If your ideal holiday is to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and relax in beautiful rural surroundings then this could well suit you. The host, Amanda, lives in the house situated next to the cottage and, although she is around should you need anything, she is not intrusive. We took advantage of a meal cooked by our host on the first evening and a delight it certainly was. A pate starter followed by a lamb casserole all washed down with a fine bordeaux; strongly recommended. From our cottage door we saw two red squirrels, jays and woodpeckers. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property which is indeed a magical place. They are on Facebook. To break our return journey we over nighted at the Chateau de la Ruche which, with its hosts Rebecca and Tim Jones, features in the Dick Strawbridge Channel 4 television series Escape to the Chateau DIY. In the Pays de la Loire region of France just north of Le Mans outside the small town of TiellĂŠ and just a four hour drive from Calais, le Ruche is everything you could wish for and more. The rooms have been tastefully refurbished and the attention to details is admirable. The grounds provide a wonderland of natural delight around which you can freely wander. We did opt for the optional, very reasonably priced, meal and it was amazing. A honey roasted tomato tartine started the evening followed by pan fried salmon, French cheeses and a cherry clafoutis all washed down with a carafe of the house red. As you sit outside and enjoy an aperitif you often see Rebecca, a self taught but very accomplished chef, go to the small herb garden outside the kitchen to select an ingredient or garnish for the meal you are about to eat. All the ingredients are either home grown or sourced locally and can't you tell. They are on Facebook and their web site is at: https://chateaudelaruche.com We will return; what more can you say than that? 12

District Councillor Report The new Folkestone & Hythe District Council has been formed and although sorry to have lost some excellent colleagues I welcome all new Councillors and look forward to working together with them for the overall benefit of all of our residents. I am pleased to have been invited to join the new Cabinet with Housing, Transport and Special Projects in my Portfolio. a very wide reaching Portfolio and a steep learning curve but I look forward to the challenges ahead. Under Housing I recently presented at a Self-Build and Community Led Housing workshop hosted by Dover DC; two initiatives which give ambitious residents the opportunity to shape and develop their own housing needs. Under Transport I was pleased to be able to authorise 10 parking permits for consultants and medical staff working at the Folkestone NHS Walk-in Centre at Radnor Park Avenue, Folkestone. The Area Officer team who organise litter pickups and graffiti removal in the District have transferred to the Communities Portfolio under Cllr Jenny Hollingsbee. I have enjoyed leading this group since its inception and thank the enthusiastic team for their support and have no doubt that they will thrive under Cllr Hollingsbee’ s stewardship., We have some very exciting projects and plans coming forward, some of which may be somewhat controversial but all of these are designed to stimulate economic growth as well as meeting future housing needs. Despite having a much fuller diary I will endeavour to support Newington Parish Council and Newington/Peene community events. Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet Member for Special Projects 22

From your County Councillor The Annual Newington fete in June is always a firm date in my summer events calendar and I was sorry that it was cancelled because of the ongoing works for Eleclink. It did at least mean it wasn’t washed out by the heavy rain we experienced. Speaking of which… Torrential rain often washes soil into the gullies (highways drains) and if you know of any blocked gullies then please report them in the same way you would a pothole. Either go the www.kent.gov.uk and go the Highways section of the website or ring 03000 41 81 81. I attended the Newington Annual Meeting on 20 May and was pleased to see two more villagers come forward to serve on the parish council. Thank you to those who have served and now step down including former chairman Sally Coleman and to those who continue their work on behalf of the parish. Charges for soil, rubble and plasterboard were introduced at Kent's Household Waste Recycling Centres from 03 June. The charge is £4 per bag of soil or rubble and £6 per sheet of plasterboard with a limit (as before) of no more than 5 bags/items a day. Experience in other areas is that charges do not lead to increased flytipping as most flytipping is done by criminal gangs and consists of items that have been and continue to be free of charge to dispose of in HWRCs or kerbside collections. KCC has also announced that we will open an extra HWRC to serve the Tonbridge and Malling area and will commit £250,000 to fund more work by Kent Police to catch flytippers. Please take extra care if you employ someone to remove your waste as a recent change in the law means that if your waste is flytipped you can be prosecuted as well as the person who did the flytipping. Anyone moving waste for payment needs a licence and you should ask to see it (and ideally take a copy/photo). The reason for introducing the charges is partly to save money (disposal of such waste costs KCC over £1m a year) and the introduction of charges by neighbouring councils which has led to more people from outside Kent using our HWRCs which increases KCC’s costs and overcrowds the HWRCs for our residents. As soil, rubble and plasterboard are not household waste we could simply refuse to accept them but a small charge seems a good compromise for those with amounts of soil, rubble and plasterboard that don’t justify the hire of a skip. Household waste continues to be free of charge for householders to dispose of at the HWRCs. I was part of the generation that had Measles, German Measles (Rubella) and Mumps as a child but the MMR vaccine has spared many children 24

these illnesses and the risk of complications. Unfortunately the level of MMR cover has dropped and in May five cases of Measles were confirmed in the Canterbury area. KCC’s Public Health staff advise that if you’re unsure whether you or your children have had two MMRs, first check your child’s Red Book or contact your GP surgery. You do not need additional MMR vaccines if you and your children have all had two MMR vaccines. Measles is a highly infectious viral illness and symptoms typically include high fever, sore, red, watery eyes, coughing, aching and feeling generally unwell, a blotchy red brown rash, which usually appears 2-4 days after the initial symptoms. If you think you could have measles contact your GP and stay away from places where you could be in contact with lots of people until at least four days after the rash appears. You may have seen reports about the Kent Superannuation Fund's decision to withdraw a £263m investment in the Woodford Equity Fund. The Woodford Equity Fund has frozen withdrawals. Whilst this is a large amount of money, the Kent Superannuation Fund was valued as £6.4bn in April 2019 and it grew by £420m between January – March this year. It is one of the best performing local government pension funds and neither the payment of pensions nor services to our residents are impacted by the Woodford freeze. (If you’d like to know more then please contact me direct). This story has prompted some people to ask about the £50m deposit made by KCC some years ago in Icelandic banks. The £50m was fully recovered with £2m in interest making a total of £52m. Inevitably the good news about the recovery (plus interest) did not receive much attention so I’m pleased to have the excuse to report it again. If you are coming to the Kent Show (5, 6 and & July at the Detling Showground) do look out for the KCC stand (number 348) our theme is the Year of Green Action and there will be information on what people can do to improve the environment and KCC’s work to reduce its carbon emissions.
