The editor of The Sentinel is also responsible for sending Hythe, Newington and Sandgate related event information to the Folkestone Herald. If you have an event you wish to publicise it is needed by Tuesday at 17:00. The information should appear in the edition two weeks later although it is not guaranteed. 12

Report from your County Councillor for Newington

Some good news and some disappointing news. Sir Martyn Lewis, chairman of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service Assessment Committee has written to me about my nomination of the Elham Valley Line Trust in Peene for an award. He has asked me to convey to the volunteers the committee’s “warm appreciation of the excellent work they do and the enormous benefit it represents to the local community. The Award is the highest accolade given to local volunteer groups and your nomination represents a tremendous achievement for your organisation. Everyone involved, and particularly your volunteers, should feel immensely proud of this and we wish you all the best for the future.” That’s the good news. Unfortunately, he adds that EVLT was not among those selected for an award this year. Only four organisations across Kent and Medway received and award and it seems there were both a large number of nominations and high standards throughout. I’m sorry we didn’t get the recognition I believe the EVLT deserves this time but we can all make up for it by making sure we visit EVLT just as soon as it is able to re-open. Once again I refer you to www.gov.uk and www.kent.gov.uk for the latest information on Covid-19 and services. Things change so quickly that much of what I could write will be out of date before the editor has assembled the magazine. However, I am pleased to report that more services are resuming and that now includes KCC’s birth registration service.. There’s a backlog of around 3,000 births to register and Kent County Council is contacting and rebooking those who had to cancel their appointments at the start of lockdown. All 18 of Kent’s Household Waste Recycling Centres are now open 7 days a week but you need to book a slot. Demand for 13

slots at the Folkestone Household Waste Recycling Centre remains high with 94% of slots booked by the day of use. To keep both staff and visitors safe there are only four cars allowed on site at a time instead of the normal nine. I had a booking for 13 July and found the new system worked smoothly with enough space to keep at a safe distance. The New Romney site is a lot less busy so if you have trouble getting a slot on the day you want it is worth trying there. Bookings can be made up to 9 days in advance but an upgrade to the booking system will soon extend that window to 4 weeks. Looking ahead, KCC will be holding an online council meeting on 16 July where we will be discussing our plans for achieving net zero carbon for our buildings and services. We have already cut our carbon emissions by 45% between 2010 and 2019 and there’s a lot happening in this area which has been my responsibility at KCC since last October. I’ll be reporting on this in my next update. Finally, a reminder that KentTogether is still operating to pick up any requests from those in need of support during the lockdown. It’s a 24/7 service and is on kent.gov.uk/ kenttogether or 03000 41 92 92. You can contact it on your own behalf (no need for a referral) or on behalf of someone else. Newington & District Gardeners Association I hope you are all keeping well, following the guide lines and keeping active. Twelve weeks have passed, twelve weeks in our gardens and still finding something that has been missed! We are so fortunate to have our gardens or allotments in these times. Of course gardening always has ups and downs and this year has been quite challenging. Who knows one day we may have a steady fall of rain! I regret to inform you that the Committee have taken the sad decision to cancel the remaining 2020 programme. There are still too many uncertainties as to the easing of ‘Lockdown’ and we must give reasonable notice to cancel Speakers, Judges, Crosskeys and the RHS Wisley. The 2020 subscription paid by members will carry over for 2021. Denise will hopefully reschedule the speakers and Vic the judges. The Charity MIND will carry over. In fact we hope to be able to reschedule the programme including the Shows, Garden Party, Sponsored Walk and Wisley for 2021. It would be good, if social distancing allows, to hold the Business Meeting in November to confirm all details for the coming year. At this moment in time we do not think it possible to hold the Christmas Dinner. However, Christmas is six months away, the situation changes by the week and it would be marvellous if we were able to get together. We will keep you updated should anything change over the coming months. The good news is the Potato Bucket Challenge and Heaviest Pumpkin competitions will go ahead. They will be hosted by Ann Vincent, Grove Farm, Arpinge. Safe Distancing and other safety measures will be in place. Grove Farm has the advantage of plenty of space and a large barn if it rains! The dates and times are as follows: Potato Bucket Challenge – Saturday July 25th. Staging by 10.30hrs. Complete bucket presented with all tops removed. Weigh-in at 11.00hrs. Please submit entries by 19.30hrs Thursday July 23rd. £1 per entry. See schedule for details Heaviest Pumpkin – Saturday September 26th. Staging by 10.30hrs. Weighin at 11.00hrs. Report from your District Councillor for Newington

Princes Parade Hot of the press is the news that the Judicial Review brought by groups opposed to the development of Princes Parade was dismissed. I have always openly supported the plans for Princes Parade which I sincerely believe will quickly become the jewel in the crown of the Hythe seafront finally providing Hythe with the modern and vibrant fitness Centre and pool. Easing of lockdown At the district Council staff that have been working in our community hubs starting to return to their substantive roles, and picking up business as usual work Our officers are making regular visits to the high streets to encourage safe opening while reminding visitors of social distancing behaviour. Additional resources have been put in place for an enhanced cleansing programme with the streets and public toilets all looking great. We are investigating how we can make best use of data analytics to help us with footfall monitoring funky signage posters are now in place, with more to come. We have also received positive feedback following the delivery of our business toolkit. Work Starting on our Beach Huts You may have seen on TV news that work is to start on our beach hut scheme. We are working with contractors to keep any disruption in the area to a minimum and to enable continued access to the beach and promenade. I am reliably informed that there is some exciting news on the horizon concerning the design of the replacement huts which I am looking forward to sharing with you once more details are available. 19

Vacancies Advertised for the Otterpool Park Board We have advertised for three Independent Director roles the board of the Otterpool Park Delivery Vehicle which will shape the development in conformity with our vision for a vibrant, clean and exciting place to live We expect the first meeting of the Board to be held in early / mid-July. This represents a major milestone in delivering what will be an exemplary project. Elham Valley Line Trust I saw on Social Media that the volunteers have been busy preparing the Line and the Barn to receive visitors safely in the no too distant future. I look forward to visiting again soon. All now available in paperback and on Kindle Set in Folkestone in the heady days of the late 60s. They say if you can remember it, you weren't there!

Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.

This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate.

This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June, 2010. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.
