Report from your District Councillor for Newington
Park and Ride Unfortunately the trial a park and ride service from Jct12 on the M20 to the Harbour via Central station. has had to be suspended by Stage Coach due to a shortage of Drivers who are needed to maintain essential services on other routes. Hopefully we can restart in the not too distant Air Display Notwithstanding the above I can advise that special parking has been arranged for the Air Display on 8th August. Additional parking will be available at Folkestone School for Girls and Radnor Park for a fixed charge of £5 per car per day HGV Parking On instructions from the DFT KCC were obliged to cease clamping illegally parked Lorries. FHDC will continue to issue FPNs on those lorries that are inappropriately parked but I feel this will not be effective enough. I have some sympathy with the drivers and believe we should continue to lobby for more parking areas within Kent. Household Waste Collections I wish to add my apology to that of the District Council for the abysmal performance of Veolia under their new contract. A cross party task and finish committee has been set up to hold the Contractor to account and to ensure services is returned to previous excellent levels forthwith.

Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet Member for Housing, Transport and Special Projects.

Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving
St Paul’s Church Sandgate Saturday 24th July at 3pm We would like to invite you to a special service on Saturday 24th July. Visitors will be asked to write down the names of those who are no longer with us including the many who have died during the pandemic, and to give thanks to all who have worked tirelessly to keep our community safe. (Paper ‘leaves’ will be provided at the church). These will be read out during the service and after which they will be planted under the roots of a white cherry tree in the grounds of St Paul’s as an everlasting reminder.
All are most welcome If you cannot attend but would like those people remembered please email: administrator@trinitybenefice.com

Report from your County Councillor for Newington I regret to report that the Department for Transport has withdrawn the temporary powers that allowed KCC to clamp illegally parked HGVs. KCC was pressing for the powers to be extended and it’s deeply disappointing that the Road Haulage Industry has campaigned against this when the vast majority of clamped vehicles were foreign registered as we have very little sanction against such vehicles other than to clamp. You will see in the District Council report that we now fall back on parking fines. There’s a 2 question consultation open on a bus strategy for Kent at kent.gov.uk/busfuture As part of the Government’s National Bus Strategy, local authorities are being invited to create an Enhanced Partnership Scheme (EPS) with bus operators. The EPS will set out shared aims and service standards with a view to improving bus services. Future government grants to support bus services will require an EPS be in place. KCC launched a Reconnect programme for Kent’s children in March and last month we put another £10m of our Government Covid Recovery funding towards it. It’s about opportunities to reconnect with activities and friends and includes a free bus pass for young people in school years 6 to 13 for use between 22 July and 31 August. Residents and businesses in Kent are also being asked to volunteer their time or donate equipment or boost the funding available and they can do so at www.kent.gov.uk/reconnect The link can also be used to sign up for the Reconnect newsletter. Several people have asked me about the Electoral Commission’s proposals to increase the number of parliamentary seats in the Southeast to help equalise the number of voters in constituencies in England. The proposal involves the creation of a new seat which would see the Elham Valley area (which includes Newington) joined to part of the adjacent rural part of Ashford to create a new seat. This would not change the borders of the District Council so Newington would still be part of Folkestone & Hythe District Council 8
Report from your County Councillor for Newington not Ashford Borough Council and still part of Elham Valley for Kent County Council. The Electoral Commission is asking for views and you can read their full proposals and give your feedback by 02 August at: https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/6488 I was with Newington Parish Council for their meeting on 19 July in George’s Barn. Newington’s excellent clerk, Melvyn Twycross is moving to Nottingham to be near his family. He has been a quite exemplary clerk and he will be missed not least by me. Susan Carey Member for Elham Valley

All now available in paperback and on Kindle Set in Folkestone in the heady days of the late 60s. They say if you can remember it, you weren't there!
Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.
This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate. Very funny, and surreal story about a man and a woman on their first date: Bolton Brady and Veda, set in London, November 2001. Bolton is forty, not into assets, has never lived with a woman and looked into the future and seen loneliness. So he decides to do something about it. He advertises in a lonely-hearts column, and receives six replies, but after experiencing one disaster after another only Veda remains between him and his sanity. As the day unfolds the line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred, building to a surreal, yet poignant, conclusion. 10
This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.
Now available on Amazon. Great evocative yarns of worldly travels.
A Loose Cannon tales of a lapsed activist
Ted Parker
The title of the book hints at how, as a ‘loose cannon’, Folkestone born Ted’s risk-taking got him into trouble on a number of occasions whilst being a considerable advantage in his working life.
As a young journalist, Reg Turnill met most of the prewar political personalities and later became the BBC's space correspondent being the only one in the press room when the historic Houston we have a problem message came from Apollo 11. 11
