Rubbish is to be taken by the sellers Clyme House in Hillside Street was built by Mr and Mrs Sutton in the early 1960s after the land was sold off by the recently formed Tynwald Residential Home. The Suttons lived in the house for the remainder of their lives and we purchased it three years ago. It was a probate sell so we have no papers relating to the property and wonder whether there any Newington or Hythe people out there who may have known Mr and Mrs Sutton and have photographs of the property. Any help, photographs or information gratefully received. david@thesentinel.org.uk

District Councillor Report Firstly, I would like to thank all those who voted for me enabling my successful return to the District Council. I look forward to the next 4 years and will use my best efforts to represent the residents of the North Downs East Ward I would also like to congratulate Cllrs John Neale, Sue Smith and Kevin Golding for standing for the residents of Newington Parish and look forward to working with them again. They may have been elected un-opposed but should be commended for putting themselves forward and being prepared to give up their time to serve the Parish. The District Council has taken on a new shape with no group in overall control which will necessitate the forming of coalitions. The District Council meeting on 22nd May will determine the political direction that will be taken and until that time we will not know who will Lead the Council and what cabinet/Committee positions will be allocated to Councillors. There will be some challenging times ahead but I hope we can all work together for the benefit of all residents of Folkestone and Hythe District to build on the many successes that I have been able to report on during the past year. I will finish by saying that during the lull before and after the elections i enjoyed a couple of family weekend outings to Georges Barn and the Railway Museum where train rides were enjoyed by several of our grandchildren. No matter how challenging future Council work becomes I can always look forward to the events that the community of Newington and Peene successfully organise throughout the season. Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet Member for Special Projects

From your County Councillor Congratulations to my District Council colleagues David Godfrey, Philp Martin and Stuart Peall on their re-election as the councillors for the North Downs West ward which includes Newington. Congratulations as well to the three public spirited locals who have been re-elected to Newington Parish Council and thank you to those who have served over the last four years in what is often a thankless role. It’s good to get a response to the newsletter items and someone contacted me about my recent item on scams in which I said the British Consulate would always help British Citizens who needed repatriation from abroad. She pointed out that this is not a right but discretionary help and gave a link to this advice: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/ uploads/attachment_data/file/781770/ Support_for_British_Nationals_Abroad_Main_Guide.pdf I’m happy to make this correction but I’d still urge you to treat with great suspicion any contact from someone asking for funds to be sent to help them get home in an emergency. Ofsted and the CQC (Care Quality Commission) published a report in May critical of the care for children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) in Kent. This is an area that KCC and the NHS are both responsible for separately and in partnership and if you would like to know more a report was made to KCC members at the 07 May meeting of the Children’s, Young People and Education Cabinet Committee which you can see on the KCC website. This is an area where we must improve. KCC holds more than 3,000 handwritten registers in our Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone and they are of great interest to people researching their ancestry. These records have now been digitised and there are 2.6 million fully indexed baptism, wedding banns, marriage and burial records spanning more than 400 years of Kent history available online. The service is free to use at KCC libraries and you can find out more at www.kentarchives.org.uk The mild winter weather has had a double benefit for our roads. Firstly the roads have come through the winter with less damage than usual and secondly we have been able to continue the pothole repair programme almost without interruption during the winter months. Repairs are ongoing so do please keep reporting the potholes either online at www.kent.gov.uk 24

or by phone at 03000 41 81 81 in office hours and on 03000 41 91 91 for emergencies out of office hours. I attended a special tour of the Elham Valley Line Trust on 14 May by SHAL (Studying History & Archaeology in Lympne). About 30 SHAL members listened to a talk by Adrian Willcox about the Elham Valley Line Trust and then visited the grounds and museum. The EVLT is a fascinating place in a beautiful setting and run entirely by local volunteers. Whenever I visit, I always check on my BR station manager’s hat donated many years ago and now on display in the museum. I had two hats from my days as Station Manager Tolworth on the South West Division and the other one is in the Railway Museum in York. If you have any railway memorabilia looking for a good home, do please consider the EVLT and do visit. See www.elhamvalleylinetrust.org for opening times.
