Report from your District Councillor for Newington

KCC elections The delayed KCC election is finally determined and I am pleased to see my friend and colleague Cllr Susan Carey returned to her seat. Newington Parish Council Very sorry to be losing Melvyn Twycross who has been an excellent Clerk and I wish him every future happiness in his move away to be near his family. Household Waste Collections I wish to add my apology to that the District Council for the abysmal performance of Veolia under their new contract. A cross party task and finish committee has been set up to hold the Contractor to account and to ensure services is returned to previous excellent levels forthwith. Housing Services A comprehensive stock survey of Council homes began this month which will provide up to date information on all properties and inform us on the challenges of adapting them to reach Carbon zero targets. Park and Ride Readers may have seen that we are trialing a park and ride service from Jct12 on the M20 to the Harbour via Central station. Hopefully this will alleviate congestion in Folkestone and pave the way for possible further schemes. It will run at weekends and through the school summer holidays until September. 4

Covid 19 and Summer Holidays Hopefully the continued success of the vaccination programme will free us all up in the not-too-distant future. We will be holidaying in the West Country but also hope we can soon visit our sons and daughters living and working in Europe. Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet Member for Housing, Transport and Special Projects.

Boating on the Royal Military Canal in Hythe has returned. It is subject to Government rules and weather conditions.

Report from your County Councillor for Newington

I’m happy to report that I’ve been re-elected as County Councillor for Elham Valley on 17 June with just over half the votes cast. Thank you to everyone who voted (especially those who voted for me). I’m also pleased to report that I’ve been re-appointed a KCC’s Cabinet Member for Environment and I’m very much looking forward to taking this work forward as well as all my usual work for the area at a local level. I’ll be catching up over the next few weeks and will write a fuller report next month. If you need to contact me, you can once again do so at susan.carey@kent.gov.uk Susan Carey Ed: Congratulations Susan.

All now available in paperback and on Kindle Set in Folkestone in the heady days of the late 60s. They say if you can remember it, you weren't there!

Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.

This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate. Very funny, and surreal story about a man and a woman on their first date: Bolton Brady and Veda, set in London, November 2001. Bolton is forty, not into assets, has never lived with a woman and looked into the future and seen loneliness. So he decides to do something about it. He advertises in a lonely-hearts column, and receives six replies, but after experiencing one disaster after another only Veda remains between him and his sanity. As the day unfolds the line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred, building to a surreal, yet poignant, conclusion. 10

This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.

Now available on Amazon. Great evocative yarns of worldly travels.
