We are having our first fundraising event on March 19th, 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Our aim is to connect to people who support charities and might be interested in our work. After an arrival drink, we will host an auction of exciting items that relate to our work and who we are, including a best man’s speech or a eulogy; a meal in a restaurant with poetry readings between courses; a Living Words session for someone living with a dementia; and more. In addition, we’ll share more about our work, hear some of the powerful words of participants from recent nursing home projects, and a song that was featured at Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank. We will announce more about the auction and programme of events closer to the day... Contact us for more information or if you would like to attend info@livingwords.org.uk / charlotte@livingwords.org.uk The owners of The Pullman, Folkestone have kindly donated the use of their newly decorated upstairs function room for the event. 15

From your County Councillor I’m sure everyone has noticed the big increase in road works in our district and more widely across Kent. Highways England, the Government Agency that deals with our motorways has been working for some time on the M20 to strengthen the hard shoulders and put in place the infrastructure that will allow two-way traffic on the London bound carriageway should there be disruption at the ports. They have also been working on the A2/M2 to get that ready for Brexit as well as the contingency plans involve more use of this corridor for HGVs using Dover (good news for our area which usually takes the bulk of all the cross Channel road traffic). On top of this there is the work on the M20 for a new junction 10a at Ashford which has involved several complete closures to put the new bridges in place.
Kent County Council made a case to the Government for extra funding to strengthen Kent’s roads in advance of Brexit and have been awarded nearly £29m. In our area this is mostly being spent on the A20 which takes the majority of traffic diversion when there are problems on the motorway. We have also restarted the pothole repair programme and in December and January filled 479 potholes and patched 1460 sqm in our district. The amount spent on Kent’s roads for normal maintenance has been increasing. In 2017/18 it was £75m, this current financial year 18/19 it is £88m and we have just agreed the budget for 2019/20 of £95.7m. We are using local Kent companies for the work with Steadline being the principal contractor for our district though you will also see Walkers doing some of the extra work. We could of course do with even more money for Kent’s road network but most of KCC’s budget is spent on social care and pays for nursing, residential or at home care for those unable to meet their own costs and for child protection. We set our 21
budget for 2019/20 at an all day debate at County Hall on 14 February and you can see the webcast of this meeting (and many other official meetings) on www.kent.gov.uk We agreed to increase council tax by just under 3% for all services with an extra 2% social care levy in recognition of the increasing demand for social care. The rise enabled us to keep our discretionary services such as the ÂŁ8m subsidy to the Young Persons Travelcard and our Community Wardens. KCC is working with other public bodies in the Kent Resilience Forum to make sure we have plans in place for disruption that may happen after Brexit and we will be keeping residents informed through our website www.kent.gov.uk and our social media accounts. I am told 300 journalists are expected in Dover for the day we leave the EU which could well alone bring a traffic jam. Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley, Kent County Council
