To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. You're just a click away from looking at some more of his work and arranging an informal chat about what's on your mind.

“promote the care, restoration, preservation, and repair of the historic Parish Church, its fixtures and fittings, organ and the maintenance of the grounds and ancient yew tree”.
St Nicholas’ Church nestles at the bottom of the North Downs in the little village of Newington within the Kent Downs - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The parish contains some of the finest, chalk downland habitat, and has spectacular views to sea and France. The chalk hills behind Newington and Peene are some of the best quality in Europe for the rare plants and animals that make it their home. Please help us maintain and restore this historic building for future generations by becoming a Friend of St Nicholas’ Church. From your County Councillor February is always a busy month at Kent County Council as it’s when we set our annual budget. KCC provides over 300 services many of which you are unlikely to notice unless they disappeared. The emergency response provided by Kent Highways is an obvious example with our officers out over Christmas to deal with flooding and coping with fallen trees during Storm Ciara (over 500 emergency calls handled over the weekend of the storm). Our budget meeting was on 13 February and lasted all day. The papers and webcast are available on www.kent.gov.uk. KCC will be spending over £1 billion on essential day to day services, an increase of £77 million (7.8%) over 2019/20. This is the largest increase in 10 years and is the first time KCC has seen an increase in grants from central government in that time. Much of the increase will be spent on services to the vulnerable (disabled children, child protection, residential care for older people and those with learning disabilities) and more on our highways. For a Band D household the council tax increase of just under 4% (half for normal expenditure and half ringfenced for social care) equates to a £1 increase a week for a Band D home for the KCC element of your council tax. I am sure that like me you have noticed plenty of potholes and blocked drains (gullies) on our roads. Please report them. The best way to do this is online at www.kent.gov.uk and then go to the highways section of the website. If there is an immediate danger to life ring Kent Police on 999, if it is urgent then ring 0300 41 91 91 and in all cases of reporting to KCC make a note of the reference number in case the matter needs chasing. If you don’t have internet access then you can ring 0300 41 81 81 in office hours for non-urgent reports – such repairs are normally carried out within 28 days. One of the best parts of being a County Councillor is being at events where 21
success is celebrated and meeting people who have done something special. The 25th annual Spirit of Tryangle Awards for Kent’s young people held on 09 February was just such an occasion with over 40 finalists each with an inspiring story about achievement, service, bravery and perseverance. I presented the awards for Personal Development and wish you could have all been with me to enjoy seeing so many young people doing so much good. There’s a consultation I’d like to draw to your attention. This one is not from KCC but Highways England about the Lower Thames Crossing. You may wonder what this has to do with us but it is really important as this project should provide the right infrastructure for the road freight traffic between the Midlands and the Channel Ports. Please have your say by 25 March at lowerthamescrossing.co.uk/consultation-2020 Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley

District Councillor Report A busy few weeks preparing Budgets Housing Revenue Account , business plan and Housing options paper which passed through full Council on 19th Feb after healthy debate. I was unable to be present but followed on webcast and pleased to see my portfolio papers passed with minor amendment . We can now press ahead with new plans to provide 1200 much needed council homes to be built on approved sites including Otterpool Park subject planning approval. Also pleased to have grant funded Newington Parish Council for new park seating. Looking forward to the end of storms despite spectacular wave action along the coast.
