Can you help? I am starting research on the use of geological deposits in the area and I’m very interested to hear from anyone who has information about the use of the chalk from Peene Quarry. There were lime kilns on the road beneath the quarry and I know that chalk was burnt to create lime. I think these were still operational in the 1950s maybe into the early 1960s? Do you have any family members, friends or acquaintances that worked at the quarry or lime kilns? Do you have any memories you can share with me or photos please? I am also interested to know about anyone who worked at the Kent ragstone/sandstone quarries in Seabrook valley? Again do you have any information you could share with me please? Thank you very much, Melanie Wrigley White Cliffs Countryside Partnership And Friend of St. Nicholas’ church, Newington. e-mail: melanie.wrigley@dover.gov.uk Mobile: 07880 706 990

The charity would normally expect to be overwhelmed with people wanting assistance but, even taking Covid into account, there is a worrying lack of numbers. One disturbing trend is the current rise in demand from people wanting to buy pets, rather than adopting from a rescue centre. And there is also the possibly of cats just being abandoned because of the Coronavirus, with cat owners not caring about what will happen to their pets. The current situation also means that cats are not being neutered, increasing the risk of them reproducing. (A kitten is sexually active at just four months). But this need not happen! The Branch, which is part of a national network, gives each cat in its care a full health check, including; vaccinations, microchipping and four weeks free pet insurance before an ideal home is found. There is also a neutering scheme available for cat owners on benefits or low incomes. Anyone wanting assistance, can call: 0345 260 1253 Neutering helpline: 03000 12 12 12 7

Report from your County Councillor for Newington Last month I wrote about KCC’s SolarTogether project to use collective buying power for Kent householders to install solar panels or buy extra storage capacity. It attracted 3,856 expressions of interest. The next stage is for individual price quotes which, if accepted, will see the work carried out over the next few months. Also proving popular is a conference on 16 November about Kent’s Plan Bee, KCC’s pollinator action plan. Pollinators are vital to much agriculture and our gardens and we want to do more to reverse their decline. It was intended to hold the conference at a venue but the need for social distancing means we will be online but the advantage of this is we can now accommodate everyone who wants to attend and several hundred people have already signed up. If you are interested do please contact me for details. As well as pollinators KCC is also trying to encourage our young people through our annual Tryangle Awards. If you know of any young people (11 – 18 years or 11 to 25 if they have special educational needs) who deserve an award for achievement or effort, please nominate them before 30 November. The categories are Arts, Community Action, Courage, Good Friends and Young Carers, Music, Personal Development, Positive Intervention, Sport or Outdoor Activities. This should enable all efforts to be recognised. Just being nominated can encourage a young person. See https:// www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/young-people/try-angleawards Please continue to report any potholes and particularly any drains you see that are blocked by silt or leaves in advance of the winter rains. You can do so via the KCC website or on 03000 41 81 81 in normal office hours or 03000 41 91 91 for anything urgent out of office hours. 8

The transition period for the UK leaving the EU ends at the end of this year. KCC has a particular responsibility together with Highways England and Kent Police for managing traffic and there are plans in place to limit the number of HGVs that can enter Kent should there be major disruption. I will keep my facebook page (see below) updated on this. I’ve started a facebook page called The Elham Valley, Kent where I’m posting some of the information that I have on roadworks, events and local businesses which are too time sensitive or I’ve no room to include in my monthly reports. Do feel free to add to the posts with news from Newington parish. Finally, you may have seen that the recent Honours List included a knighthood for Paul Carter for services to local government. Paul led KCC for fourteen years and chaired the County Council Network for four. He received a CBE in 2014 after his work to rescue jobs in East Kent when Pfizer withdrew from their Sandwich site. He really has been indefatigable in his work for Kent, its people and businesses as I’ve witnessed at first hand. It’s good to see his dedication recognised this way. Also honoured was Newington resident Cleo Smith of Age UK Hythe and Lyminge who has been awarded a BEM for her work during the recent pandemic. It’s good to see one of the local ‘heroes’ honoured in this way. Susan Carey Member for Elham Valley Kent County Council

All now available in paperback and on Kindle Set in Folkestone in the heady days of the late 60s. They say if you can remember it, you weren't there!

Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.

This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate.

This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June, 2010. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.
