Brian and Jenny Oxley have lived in Wayfield House in West Hythe for 40 years and when you visit you can see why. Set in a number of delightful acres, the garden, superbly tended by Jenny, meanders in an informal manner, each turning exposing something new to delight all the senses. It is no wonder this has been such an inspiration for their work.

Brian was born locally and attended the Folkestone School of Art when it was in Shellon Street. He has exhibited widely including in a RA Summer Exhibition and has his paintings in collections throughout the world. He is listed in David Buckman's authorative Artists in Britain since 1945 and in Who's Who in Art (35th Edition 2012) edited by Lynda Murray. His work pays testament to the years of practise and his experience was passed on to students at three local schools, where he was the Head of Art, and other educational institutes. Now he devotes his time to practising his craft and art and The Sentinel is delighted to provide a platform for his work particularly as half of the money he receives goes to the Parkinson Research charity who have already received in excess of ÂŁ4000 from him.

Should you wish you can visit Brian at his studio, the Mission Hut, where he would be delighted to show you round the garden too where you will enjoy this developing creativity and should discover many of Jenny's hand built ceramics featuring animals and other forms influenced in some cases by historic cultures, albeit they are not for sale.

500 New, Wooly Neighbours To Arrive This Autumn Many long-time residents will know that the land west of Newington, north of Frogholt, and east of Beachborough has long been used for the training of soldiers and the grazing of cattle. However, as of October this year, our neighbours Ben and Lou Corrie of Frogholt will take up a lease on this land, where they will be managing a flock of 500 sheep under the name Frogholt Farm. (Some readers may remember Ben and Lou getting married in Newington Church this past June, in a livestock-themed ceremony complete with a pig waistcoat for the groom and a flower-bedecked horse and cart for the bride.)

Many of you, like me, enjoy a walk across these fields regularly, and I’m sure you will find that the presence of the sheep enhances your travels. However, it is very important that all of us keep our dogs on a lead when we are anywhere near the flock. Even the most apparently placid dog can “worry” sheep by running among them, and every year thousands of sheep in Britain die as a result not only of direct injuries, but also indirectly as a result of fleeing in fear - after all, you might have a heart attack too if a predator came to your home and threatened to eat you. So please help your neighbours by keeping your dogs on a lead and under your direct control when you visit Frogholt Farm.

Ben and Lou plan to lamb outdoors in the spring, so we can all look forward to the sight of the young lambs at play around Easter next year. Their intention is to gradually grow the flock to over 1000 animals while continuing to preserve the land and our rural heritage. District Councillor Report Newington Church I am pleased to have awarded part of my Ward Budget to the Friends of Newington Church to assist with their wall restoration programme.

Sadly, my budget for 2018/19 grants is now fully allocated and I am unable to accept further applications.

Travellers Travellers have recently returned to Hawkinge and removed a padlock and new bollard to gain access to a playing field. The Town and District Councils are working with the Police to have them move on. I have again raised the need for better preventative measures and these will be discussed with KCC on Thursday 20th. I agree with Residents who feel that not enough is being done to prevent these incursions

Waste Collection Charges KCC are running a consultation on whether to charge all residents for nonhousehold waste collection, e.g. Rubble, Soil, Plasterboard etc. Is it fair? will it encourage more fly tipping?

BT Scam On 18th September a local resident reported We have just received a recorded message (an American female voice) alluding to be from BT informing us that our BT broadband will be cancelled today if we do not contact the number given in the recording. The last number received on our phone shows 01232-75965, which is an incomplete number and upon checking directly with BT a SCAM. Please beware of such calls.

From your County Councillor On 20 September the Kent Highways Steward for our area came with me and a resident of Newington to look at the footpath along the A20. All the concerns have been logged and there will be some work but the good news is that the path is fundamentally sound and a good sweep and clearance of vegetation will make a big improvement.

The pothole repair programme continues and the latest figures show 50,956 potholes filled across Kent and 201,790 sqm of resurfacing. Within that figure the Folkestone & Hythe district has seen 4,781 potholes filled and 25,083 sqm of resurfacing with more to come. Please keep reporting highway problems at www.kent.gov.uk or 03000 41 81 81. The reporting system is not just for potholes, it also covers blocked drains, faded road markings, overhanging vegetation, damaged highway signs pavements and much more.

KCC’s consultation on whether to introduce charges for soil, rubble, hardcore and plasterboard at our 16 Household waste recycling centres continues until 1 November. The early responses have mostly come from people who don’t use the HWRCs for this themselves but fear charges might lead to an increase in flytipping. Experience elsewhere in the country is that charging for this type of waste does not lead to an increase in flytipping as most householders are law abiding and accept that a payment of £4 for a bag of rubble is a reasonable charge compared to the cost of an entire skip. Most flytipping is done by criminal gangs not individuals and Kent Police have had some major successes in catching those responsible.

We can all help with this by reporting flytipping we see to the Police and the District Council or by using the country eye app which I am told is by far the simplest method. (An Elmsted resident has recently been able to provide evidence that will lead to a flytipping prosecution.

Newington is fortunate to have a beautiful church and even more fortunate to have an organisation, The Friends of Newington Church, which cares for it. In the last month The Friends have had a fundraising event with a fish and chip supper, quiz and board games evening held in the church which I greatly enjoyed. They also held one of their regular churchyard working parties which I was also attended, helping remove ivy from both the exterior of the church and the wall around the churchyard. Do watch out for their next events and come along, they deserve support.
