District Councillor Report I hope that readers are enjoying the summer despite the unsettled weather. My wife and I are on holiday with two grandchildren in Vendee, France from where I am sending this article. The weather has been a little kinder here but still unsettled. Along with some fellow councillors I recently visited Poundbury, an urban extension of Dorchester based on the Garden Town principles of quality and sustainable housing with plenty of green space. Our intention is to take the best of the Garden Town principles and embed them in our long term plans for Otterpool park . I shall be returning early September at my own expense to learn more about how their Anoerobic Digester uses locally produced feedstock and food waste to generate energy for Poundbury and more. I am pleased to advise that Shepway District Council has recently started a new free business advice service, aimed at helping people to start up or expand businesses locally. The service is being delivered through a contract with “Let’s Do Business” and includes a free consultation with a trained and experienced advisor. These one to one sessions are currently being held at the Civic Centre, but over the course of the year we will be taking them around the district. The next dates are as follows: August 23 - morning at the Civic Centre and afternoon at Romney Resource Centre September 6 Civic Centre September 27 Civic Centre Further information can be seen at: www.folkestone.works/funding-and-support/need-business-support/ If any of your constituents are interested in this service please ask them to contact kaye.crittell@ldbgroup.co.uk to arrange a booking. From your County Councillor Newington Parish Council provides a popular children’s play area next to the village hall, Shepway District Council provides many parks such as the Lower Leas Park (top rated in Folkestone by Tripadvisor) and the area alongside the Royal Military Canal in Hythe but did you know that Kent County Council also provides parks? Kent County Council is responsible for nine Country Parks and five smaller countryside areas across Kent. Our nearest Country Park is at Brockhill Park near Hythe and it has Green Flag status which is a quality mark for its level of maintenance and facilities. The parks cost £1.6m a year to run and generate £1.2m income which means the cost to Kent taxpayers is £400,000 a year or 21p per resident. In 2015/16 the parks had 1.6m visitors and visitor surveys found an average rating for the parks of 9.25 out of 10. Seven of the Country Parks have Green Flag status, one is a National Nature Reserve, three are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and three are Local Wildlife Sites. KCC has just published a Country Parks strategy about its plans for the parks over the next four years and it is open for consultation until 11 September at www.kent.gov.uk/countryparksstrategy or contact me for paper copy. Last month I reported that KCC was carrying out extra fire checks on all its buildings and this work is continuing in conjunction with Government departments and Kent Fire and Rescue Service. We don’t know what the next emergency will be in Kent – fire, flood, terrorism or something quite unknown today. As far as possible there are plans to respond to the known threats and we are fortunate in Kent to have a close partnership between the emergency services, the district/borough councils and the County Council. Together they form the Kent Resilience Forum and there is information on their work at www.kentprepared.org.uk The website also has advice for individuals and businesses on what they can do to prepare for an emergency. It’s well worth a read. Susan Carey Member for Elham Valley

The Historic Houses Association (HHA) represents over 1,640 of the UK's privately and charitably owned historic houses, castles and gardens. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain's unique heritage. Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 24 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are over 45,000 Friends of the HHA. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes. The Association was established in 1973 to help owners conserve these wonderful places in the interests of the nation and carries out important lobbying, advisory and marketing work on behalf of Member properties.
