Brian and Jenny Oxley have lived in Wayfield House in West Hythe for 40 years and when you visit you can see why. Set in a number of delightful acres, the garden, superbly tended by Jenny, meanders in an informal manner, each turning exposing something new to delight all the senses. It is no wonder this has been such an inspiration for their work. Brian was born locally and attended the Folkestone School of Art when it was in Shellon Street. He has exhibited widely including in a RA Summer Exhibition and has his paintings in collections throughout the world. He is listed in David Buckman's authorative Artists in Britain since 1945 and in Who's Who in Art (35th Edition 2012) edited by Lynda Murray. His work pays testament to the years of practise and his experience was passed on to students at three local schools, where he was the Head of Art, and other educational institutes. Now he devotes his time to practising his craft and art and The Sentinel is delighted to provide a platform for his work particularly as half of the money he receives goes to the Parkinson Research charity who have already received in excess of ÂŁ4000 from him. Should you wish you can visit Brian at his studio, the Mission Hut, where he would be delighted to show you round the garden too where you will enjoy this developing creativity and should discover many of Jenny's hand built ceramics featuring animals and other forms influenced in some cases by historic cultures, albeit they are not for sale.

To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. You're just a click away from looking at some more of his work and arranging an informal chat about what's on your mind.

District Councillor Report Princes Parade Leisure Centre Readers will no doubt be aware that the planning application for a new leisure Centre at Princes Parade, Hythe together with outline permission for 150 new homes of which 45 will be affordable was approved on Thursday 16th August. Whilst some of you may have objected to this development I personally am pleased that it went through as I believe this it will not only provide the much needed leisure facility to replace the costly and outdated swimming pool in Hythe but will also enhance access to the banks of the Military Canal. It will open up a large and safe promenade area together with ample green space for the public to enjoy on what was a former refuse disposal site and is currently largely inaccessible to the public. Independent Living Assistance I am delighted to advise that the Council has secured more than £1million in Government funding to support an innovative scheme to help elderly and disabled people to remain in their homes... It includes interest-free loans of up to £20,000 for adaptations to make a property safer for disabled or elderly residents, loans for heating or insulation costs for older people with long-term health conditions, and helping to fund a dedicated hospital worker to deal with housing-related issues that can delay someone's discharge. He Council has now launched a consultation on its plans about how the money should be used. Further details can be found on the Councils Website at: https://www.folkestone-hythe.gov.uk/news/helping-people-live-independently
Ward Grants Just a reminder that Ward Councillors have an allowance of up £3000 during the 2018/19 year to grant to community projects. I have already allocated the majority of my 2018/2018 to worthy causes in north Downs East allowance but still have £600 available Cllr David Godfrey Cabinet member for Special Projects

From your County Councillor I am delighted to report that KCC has recently been awarded the Ministry of Defence Employers Recognition Gold Award for its support for ex-service personnel and Reservists. We have an Armed Forces Covenant which commits KCC to ensure that serving personnel, veterans and Reservists will not be disadvantaged in accessing our services as a result of serving in the military. There’s more information about what this means in practice on our website (search for Armed Forces) as well as a calendar of events across Kent which celebrate Kent’s military heritage. A group of KCC councillors have been asked to look at the issue of loneliness and social isolation especially among Kent’s older residents. They will be looking at whether KCC’s current service provision and partnership working is effective and make recommendations on how they could be improved. Written submissions on this issue are invited from anyone interested and should be sent to select.committee@kent.gov.uk by midday on Monday September 10, 2018. Once all the information has been considered, the councillors will produce a report for consideration at a full county council meeting in early 2019. Look out for a consultation on our Household Waste Recycling Centres. Kent has 16 of these and we are one of the last places in the country still accepting soil, rubble and plasterboard all of which are not classified as household waste. We are now getting significant inflows of such waste from across the County boundaries and the consultation is asking for views on whether we should introduce a charge for this type of non household waste in line with neighbouring councils. I’ve no further news on the broadband voucher scheme but a launch is imminent and I will give details as soon as they are known. And finally, the pothole report. Between 01 March and 10 August 47,943 potholes had been filled and 149,017 sqm of patching has been done across Kent. For our district the equivalent figures are 4,635 potholes and 21,373 sqm of patching. Do please keep reporting potholes so that they are added to the work programme. You don’t need to know the name of the road as the website www.kent.gov.uk has an interactive map where you can mark the spot or you can ring 03000 41 81 81 in office hours and 03000 41 91 91 for emergencies at other times. Hope to see you many of you at the Friends of Newington Church Fish and Chip Supper on 01 September. Susan Carey Member for Elham Valley 24
