Sandgate Farmers' Market Saturday, 19th January, 2019
The first Sandgate Farmers' Market of 2019 will be on Saturday, 19th January (there is NOT a Market on Saturday, 5th January) ------Would you like to support your community? If we get the support we need you'll probably only have to do two Markets a year (unless you want to do more of course). Details from david at david@thesentinel.org.uk

To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. With few exceptions, most people do not welcome change and Michael Chalk’s resignation as Caretaker at the Chichester Hall is regrettable although the Trustees fully understand why he has decided to focus on other things. Michael started as Caretaker in February, 2010 and he has brought to that role a unique approach and total willingness to go the extra mile, which has endeared him to all he has encountered. As Caretaker he has earned the respect of the hirers with his reliability. His administrative skills has meant that the Hall’s diary has been processed and maintained effortlessly or so he made it seem. Change, no matter how regrettable, is also an opportunity to review how things are done. The Trustees give of their efforts freely but all have their livelihoods and families making understandable demands on their time. It has been decided therefore that we will use the opportunity to create an executive function that will drive the fortunes of the Hall, guided and supported by the strategic direction determined by the Board. It is easy to overlook the fact that the Trustees are legally responsible for an asset heading towards a £million in value and generating tens of thousand of pounds of income a year. It is like a not so small business and should have all the same commercial principles and disciplines applied whilst observing its charitable status and objectives as a community hall. From January 1st, David Cowell will become the first Executive Officer and his personal knowledge of the Hall over the last ten years means he can confidently carry out the following functions: Building management Book keeping and accountancy Hall hires' administration Farmers’ Market administration David’s early focus will be on how to drive hires, encourage people to participate in the hirers’ recreational and business activities, seek new stall holders and devise marketing mechanism to increase footfall at the twice monthly Farmers’ Market. 14

Another focus in 2019 will be the continued refurbishment of the Hall. We have hopefully stopped the ingress of water and at the same time repaired and decorated the side and front windows and door, The water damage to the wall on the west side of the Hall has been repaired and a new floor has been laid. Although fund raising may be required, we hope to refurbish the stairwell, toilets and kitchen in the coming year. All these will, I am sure, make for an even better experience for everyone.

CT scanner for William Harvey Hospital Having a CT scan done as soon as possible for anyone who is in need of one is a matter of extreme urgency. The quicker you get a scan, the quicker you will receive the diagnosis and prognosis of your medical problem. The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford is in need of another CT scanner which costs ÂŁ1 million, plus the charges involved with installing and staffing the equipment. A funding page has been set up on www.justgiving.com whereby all donations will go to the radiology department at William Harvey to help towards their purchase of a new CT scanner. Do tell everyone you meet about this project as you never know if there might be a time when YOU, a friend, colleague or relative will require the use of this machine at some point in the future.
Just click on the donate button above or go to: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lindsayfairgrieve Thank you for your support in this vital fund raising. Lindsay Fairgrieve
