When Alain and Jasmin closed La Salamandre we feared a favourite eatery had left the High Street for ever. We are delighted therefore that a worthy alternative called Lashings Caferant has been opened. It is called a caferant because as well as offering continental breakfasts, teas, coffees and cakes it also does three hot lunches and the menu changes every day. It is here that its owner, Ben Mansell, has identified a need that I've not seen before. The lunches come in three different sizes, peckish, hungry and famished with prices at the time of visiting of £6.50, £7.50 and £8.50 respectively. Ben is a most agreeable host and is determined to make his venue a welcoming space in our town. His food is sourced locally wherever possible except for the delightful bakery and pastry products that fair from France - and so they should. The Sentinel is working hard with others in the community to make Hythe the place to visit and to help us Ben has offered a 10% discount off a hot meal until the 15th February. Open Mon-Sat – Fri 8.30 – 5.00 Sun 9.30 – 4.00 30 The High Street, Hythe, Kent CT21 5AT

To commission a painting by talented Sandgate residing artist Malcolm Ritchie costs less than you think and provides a valued, timeless and unique gift. Malcolm has been painting and drawing for most of his life and works in all mediums and subjects. My subjects, he says, inspire me. You're just a click away from looking at some more of his work and arranging an informal chat about what's on your mind.

You'll find me here #MalcolmRitchie

The frustrating thing I find with diaries and notebooks is that I either don't have a pen or the pen I stick inside the book eventually breaks its spine but not anymore. The Bobino slim pen solves this problem, sitting comfortably either as a page marker or in the specially provided holder. I have pestered Clive and Helen at Artwrite for ages to stock them and now they do. Only ÂŁ5.99 they don't take refills but they last for years.

Paul worked at Crundens and since its closure has provided this excellent service.

The editor of The Sentinel is also responsible for sending Hythe, Newington and Sandgate related event information to the Folkestone Herald. If you have an event you wish to publicise it is needed by Tuesday at 17:00. The information should appear in the edition two weeks later although it is not gauranteed.

At The Tea Garden, Hythe, they sell a huge selection of award winning quality loose leaf teas and tisanes all from local produces: Debonair Tea, Bergamia, Rosie Lea Tea and The Kent & Sussex Tea and Coffee Company (we do amazing Kentish Roast coffee too from many local suppliers)! As well as selling a huge selection of tea from The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company, they also serve it in their cafe in the shop. The business was established in 1982 by the Smith Family on their return to Kent from India and is based in the village of Pluckley in the heart of the English County of Kent. Whether you want to detox, relax, indulge, feel refreshed, etc. there’s a tea for everyone! So much variation and all from the same tea plant, Camellia Sinensis (apart from our heral and fruit teas which are classed as tisanes). For those who want a more traditional tea, our The Tea Garden Hythe Tea is their bespoke blend of Assam and Kenyan and is strong and hearty. All their Kent & Sussex Teas can be enjoyed as a Sample cup from £1.25, a pot for one from £2.10, a pot for two from £3.10; you can also buy the tea to take away and savour at home. They sell a range of infusers so your tea can be infused and enjoyed the way it should be. Find them at the back of ‘that little plant shop’ in the High Street Tues-Sun
