Chairman, Crispin Davies, welcomed about 50 members, Town Mayor Cllr Paul Peacock and District Councillors David Owen and Malcolm Dearden to the annual meeting of Hythe Civic Society held in Hythe Town Hall on Tuesday 8 May 2018.

The guest speaker, Anne Petrie who is the Chairman of the Hythe Local History Group, described the preparations that the Group are making to celebrate the centenary of the end of World War 1 on 11th November this year. This has involved researching 200 biographies of Hythe residents who died during the Great War and will involve local schoolchildren who will “partner” one of the 200 Hythe fallen.

A Certificate of Nomination was presented by the Town Mayor, Cllr. Paul Peacock, to Sally Chesters who had been nominated for "Citizen of the Year" - a new award inaugurated by Hythe Town Council.

The Chairman then announced two “Outstanding Service to the Community” awards. The first was to the Rev. Desmond Sampson who was, regretfully, not well enough to attend the meeting but Vice-Chairman, Christopher Melchers, briefly described Rev. Sampson's life and how he took up an extraordinary breadth of service to the local community.

2018 AGM - Award to Alan Joyce

The second recipient of the “Outstanding Service to the Community” was Alan Joyce. Sally Chesters explained that Alan had been concerned with Hythe's trees before he joined Hythe Civic Society in 2005. Alan works with the Hythe Environmental Community Group and is the local volunteer Ranger for the Sustrans National Cycle Network. In addition to being the Society treasurer Alan is treasurer of Cycle Shepway and Hythe Environmental Community Group.

Finally, the Capon Shield and a ceramic plaque was presented by Crispin Davies to Folkestone and Hythe District Council represented by Cllrs.

David Owen and Malcolm Dearden for the District Council’s thorough renovation of the historic Tramway Shelter on Prince's Parade.

Crispin remarked that “at a time of local authority austerity it was wonderful to see the District Council conserving its historic landmarks.”

A full set of verbal reports were made by members of the Executive Committee outlining what they had achieved during the 2018 AGM - Award to F& H Council re year and were planning for the ensuing year.

Tram Stop Officers and committee members were elected for the next 12 months.

Chris O’Connor proposed that the Society should participate in the proposed review of the Hythe Conservation Area as part of a national initiative by Civic Voice. This was warmly welcomed.

Before closing the meeting the Chairman reminded members that the committee was short of three members and urged anyone wanting to contribute some of their time, experience and/or expertise towards the well being of Hythe to contact him or any committee member. He also asked those present for ideas on how the Society could celebrate its 75the anniversary on 1 February 2020.

This year’s Hythe annual town meetings saw the launch of the very first Hythe Citizen of the Year Awards. Hythe Town Hall was crammed with residents, local organisations and councillors to The meeting was crammed with residents, representatives of organisations and councillors witness the discussing town business awards ceremony.

The town council wanted tells the meeting why he was nominated to recognise the contributions that volunteers make to Hythe, since too often their efforts are not recognised. Without volunteers, many of the events, clubs and entertainment in Hythe would not happen.

The editor of The Sentinel is also responsible for sending Hythe and Sandgate related event information to the Folkestone Herald. If you have an event you wish to publicise it is needed by Tuesday at 17:00. The information should appear in the edition two weeks later although it is not gauranteed.

I am researching the history of Tynwald House in Hillside Street Hythe and would be most grateful if you could pass on anything you may know about the property. It is now a residential home for the elderly but has been a private dwelling in the past with owners such as Admiral Hall-Thomson and Charles Dynely Twopeny who was Mayor of Hythe between 1919-1922.
