10 Most Expensive Cigars in the World

Cigars are considered a symbol of luxury, definitely more classy than the humble cigarette or the exotic hookah. There are people who like them and then there are connoisseurs who collect cigars as an object of pride. Cigars are like stamps, the older and rarer they get, the costlier they are. Rare cigars are often auctioned, and are lapped up at high prices, sometimes, obscenely high prices.
Here are some cigars that will surprise you with their price tag. 1. Mayan Sicars: What’s special about these cigars is that none of its makers is alive now. Not surprising, when you will hear that these are cigars from the Mayan period and were buried in the ground at least 600 years ago. A bundle of 800 odd cigars was discovered by archaeologists in April 2012. The entire collection was finally auctioned for $507,000.
2. Double Corona Regius: Regius Cigars Ltd. sold its most precious cigar -- the Double Corona Regius -- to Callum Jones, a young entrepreneur who has made it big in the coffee business. For a whooping 40,000 pounds, the single handmade cigar that used the finest tobaccos was enjoyed by Mr. Jones.
3. Gran Habano – El Gigante: This is no ordinary stogie, and the person who bought it for $185,000 didn’t pay that much money for nothing. As the name suggests, this one is a giant -- a 16,000 pound stogie, which equals 25,000 regular smokes. Wonder how he plans to smoke it though.
4. Gurkha Black Dragon: At $750 for a single cigar and $15,000 a box, these cigars come drenched in luxury, literally. Each stick is made from 18 year old tobacco and soaked in a $2,500 bottle of Louis XIII de RĂŠmy Martin cognac. The cigar that wraps rich tobacco from the world over was released in 2006 as a limited edition pack.
5. Arturo Fuente Opus X Ltd: A cigar which is difficult to find, the Arturo Fuente Opus X Limited Edition is special because of its Rosado leaves wrapper that are grown in the Chateau de la Fuente plantation situated in a tropic river valley of the Dominican Republic.Costly, but affordable, you can get hold of one of these for a price upwards of $25.
6. Cohiba Behike: Often touted as the world’s most expensive cigar to the uninitiated, this one’s costly, but certainly not the costliest one around. The original run of 4000 Behikes was sold at $575 each; however, there has been an announcement of a regular line. There are speculations that it won’t be the same as the original 4000 though.
7. Gurkha His Majesty’s Reserve: At $1000 a stick, the Gurkha HMR stands as a costly, but affordable indulgence. There is a three-year waiting list, according to Kaizad Hansotia, the CEO of Gurkha. Fans include former U.S. President Bill Clinton and actor Matthew McConaughey. There’s expected to be a slight raise in the price soon.
8. Fuente Don Arturo AnniverXario: Carlito Fuente made these cigars to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Arturo Fuente Cigar Company, founded by his grandfather, Arturo Fuente, in 1912. Although Carlito Fuente planned to release Fuente Don Arturo AnniverXario, they somehow never got released until 2008, when they were sold in boxes each of whom contained 96 prized stogies. Each box comes with its own certificate of authenticity and is priced at $7500.
9. Padrón Serie 1926: It was made in 2002 in the celebration of José O. Padrón's 75th birthday. This rich and powerful cigar is priced at $71 per stick. The limited edition Padrón Anniversary Series 1926 are box pressed and available in Maduro and Natural wrappers.
10. Cohiba Esplendido: Another one of Cohiba’s legendary smoke, this one packs a punch at $30 each. It is exquisite, smooth, and doubtless a luxury. Beware of the fakes though.
You might be thinking how much these cigars really cost to make. Well, one factor that contributes to the hefty price tag is the fact that some ingredients are extremely rare and as a result, highly sought after. Another factor is the aging period. The older a cigar, the better it tastes. Buying time is impossible, so, if you are offered something that is produced well over, let’s say 80 years, it’s almost a relic. And relics are priceless, are they not?
