TELLING TRUTH FOR OVER 13 YEARS! TELLING THE THE TRUTH FOR OVER 13 YEARS

New “Drive Safer” Banners Too Small?

W

ell I guess the new “Drive Safer” banners were too small for this BMW driver to read as he was speeding up Sunland Blvd. last Saturday. It’s never a good idea to

try to pass in the bike lane and then pull in front of a heavily loaded truck. When the truck hit the BMW that had turned in front of him, it literally drove up and over the BMW

door and fender. The BMW then lost control, running up the side of the embankment trapping its driver inside until the LAFD arrived to free him. No one was injured.

Recently, Rock Swart made a big deal of the new banners that were supposed to be put up on the roadways to tell people to slow down. Unfortunately, almost all the signs are planted around North Valley City Hall where CD-7 staff can revel at how such small signs can even be read by people speeding down Foothill Blvd.. But, doesn’t anyone wonder how come they’re in English & Spanish and not English & Armenian?

Scout started Party Goats LA in 2017 with Spanky and Pippin, two Nigerian Dwarf goats from Inyokern California. Scout enjoys bringing the joy of goats to everyone. Their services include the very popular, Goat Yoga, Hiking with goats, and Television and movie appearances. Actually, these two are used to partying with celebs like Gordon Ramsey, Drew Carey, and Olympic Snowboarder Shaun White. After meeting Pippin and Spanky I can say they definitely have personalities that are fun and engaging. My daughter and I had the best

time playing with them. Goat Therapy is also available to those who use animal based therapies for social and emotional disabilities. - “Much like Equine Therapy, interacting with goats has many emotional benefits for those with social/learning disabilities, drug/alcohol dependency, PTSD, and those who simply need to disconnect from whatever struggle they are working through.” Scout has worked with her all female team of seven wranglers to train

irefighters toiled in stifling heat Saturday on the lines of destructive wildfires across the U.S. West, making progress against some blazes while struggling to tame others that have forced evacuations of hundreds of homes. Fires also burned on the Marine Corps’ sprawling Camp Pendleton base in northern San Diego County. The Southern California fires erupted Friday as strong high pressure over the West spawned an epic heat wave that saw parts of Los Angeles broil in temperatures up to 117 degrees. There was little relief overnight. “Temperatures at 8 a.m. were ridiculously over 100 degrees” in the foothills and many inland valleys, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters said the region’s siege of heat would gradually ease through the weekend, but the unstable air mass unleashed downpours that triggered flash-flood warnings for

the mountains northeast of Los Angeles and lightning strikes started a few quickly contained brush fires. Elsewhere in California, the 138-square-mile County Fire northwest of Sacramento was nearly 50 percent contained. Ten structures were counted destroyed but damage assessments were continuing. Global SuperTanker Services LLC’s B747-400 firefighting Supertanker, is the world’s largest firefighting plane. With fires occurring statewide, the Colorado-based Boeing 747-400 supertanker was deployed to California last week. Scott McLean, deputy chief of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said the supertanker was undergoing checks at an airfield outside Sacramento last week. Software issues needed to be resolved before the aircraft owned by Global SuperTanker Services of Colorado Springs could be activated under a call-whenneeded contract.

Before you buy baby chicks, make sure you research and follow local laws, city ordinances and homeowner association rules. Take Up Beekeeping In the 1940s, America had five million beehives, and today, roughly half of those re- main. A growing awareness of this drastic decline has led to an increase in ur-

fruits and vegetables via the canning process. While many homesteaders use yields from their garden, others buy extra produce in its peak season. Canning veggies and fruits is a family-friendly activity that lets you enjoy seasonal produce all year long. Though urban homesteading may seem intimidating at first, it’s easier to start small. The projects above can help minimize your impact on the environment and allow you to take part in your own food production.

Update on the New Safe Streets Banners: I received a call from the city permitting department for the Bureau of Street Lighting, who CD7 deputy Eve Sinclair contacted last weekend. She claimed to receive “complaints” from people about our banners and requested that they all

be taken down. And yes, the banners were permitted to go up. All this from the champion of Public Safety. The banners will be taken down tomorrow morning. But this issue will not go away. Look for an article in the L.A. Daily News to-

ASK RUSTY Going Back to Work after Retiring

by AMAC Certified Social Security Advisor Russell Gloor, Association of Mature American Citizens

D

ear Rusty: I am 63 ½ and I am officially retiring from my job on August 1 because I’m physically unable to do the work anymore. I have qualified for a pension from work and I also want to start receiving my Social Security benefits. What happens if I choose to go back to work full time or part time in the future? Do I continue to receive Social Security? Do I lose anything if this happens? Or have I just frozen my benefits at the current rate? Signed: Retiring Soon Dear Retiring: Since your full retirement age (FRA) is 66 years of age, you should be aware that if you start your Social Security before you reach your full retirement age your benefit amount will be reduced by 5/9 of 1% for each month early that you claim, so at 63 1/2 the reduction will be 16.7%, and that reduction is permanent. If you claim benefits early and you go back to work before you reach age 66, you will still receive your Social Security benefits, but you will be subject to Social Security’s earnings limit, which for 2018 is $17,040. If your annual earnings exceed that limit they will withhold future benefits equal to $1 for every $2 over the limit you are, until the year you reach your full retirement age. In that year, the earnings limit goes way up (by about 2 1/2 times) and the withholding amount is less ($1

for every $3 over the limit). Note that the earnings limits change annually, but the 2018 limit for those who reach their full retirement age this year is $45,360 and $17,040 in the year prior to the year you reach your FRA. If

you exceed the earnings limit Social Security will withhold your Social Security benefits until they recover what you owe them due to exceeding the limit. Then, when you reach your full retirement age, they’ll give you time credit for any months you didn’t receive a benefit due to exceeding the earnings limit and will recompute your benefit amount as though you applied later than you actually did. By doing this your benefit amount at your FRA will be increased to eventually offset the loss of benefits you suffered while you were working and collecting. Note that Social Security asks that you advise them as soon as you know you will exceed the earnings limit, rather than waiting until they eventually catch up to you when you file your Federal Income Tax Return. And please also note that

they don’t withhold partial benefits; they withhold the entire month’s benefit, and if that is more than you owe they will reimburse you any excess

they withheld in the following tax year. The information presented in this article is intended

Spotlight on Business Sunland Printing

Robert, Julie, Kristoffer and Kayla Ward in front of their Super Printing Machine!

S

unland Print and Copy Center began in May 1986 almost directly across the street from their present location at 7566 Foothill Blvd., Tujunga. Robert Ward has been in this business since he was 14. For a while Robert and Julie’s business moved near Commerce. In 1999 Robert’s parents purchased their present property, as a gift for Robert. Their immediate family stays involved in the business. Erica, one of her twins, works at the shop full time and will probably take over the business someday, while Heather works in home health care. There would be someone in the family to run this business should the unthinkable happen. Even the grand children pitch in to help run the machines and learn how to

count change. Every now and then they have to ask a question about the Xerox Versant 180, a digital press that can do almost everything form 4 x 6 postcards to a 132 X 26 calendar sheet and banners. It can embroidery, silkscreen –heck they can put almost anything on your automobile in any possible form. Julie said the best thing about working with family is spending a lot of time together. Although she and Robert have taken work breaks from each other. He worked for the LA Weekly as a press check staying until they went digital. Julie worked at United Cerebral Palsy because her degree is in special education They get tired of each other when they are work together, but when they are apart, miss each other. This is a one stop printing facility. Anywhere from creating a logo to printing in any medium. There is really no reason to go another printing place. Their prices are more than fair. They are very friendly and th work, impeccable. They are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am until 5:0 pm, sometimes staying until 6:00. Call 818-353-1588.

Harmony Farms By Bonnie Corwin onny, owner of Harmony Farms, located at 2824 Foothill Blvd, La Crescenta, CA, summed it all up. The home is where the heart is. He loves being at work and

doing what he does. It shows in his work, his chipper attitude and his customer service. Originally from Durango, Mexico, Sonny epitomizes the American dream. Sonny Felipe Cabrales, began his career in 1976 at the Schreiner’s Sausage House. In addition to his full time job, in 1979, he worked for Bruce Oxford at Harmony Farms, opened since 1972. Having to leave Schriener’s, Sonny eventually moved up to be in charge of the produce room. On April 1,

What is the biggest challenge working with family? Occasionally a family member may not show up, or may come in late. But overall Sonny feels it is beneficial working alongside family. They watch out for the business. It is a pretty hopping place too. The USDA inspects the place every day, Monday through Friday. Then they have beef delivered about once a week, add onto that poultry, turkey, etc., three or more times a week. There was a steady stream of

Harmony Farms specializes in organic and exotic meats, pretty much whatever you are looking for. And Sonny has not forgotten about your pets, providing them a raw diet. Specializing in Home Buying and Selling in Your Neighborhood

M

y name is Alex Agadzhanyan and I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. I am a realtor from Pinnacle Estate Properties and a resident from Sunland. I specialize in home buying and selling in your neighborhood. At the early age of 12 years old, my parents decided to move here from Hollywood, California to escape traffic and an over populated city. I have lived at the same residence since 1995. I attended Mount Gleason Middle School along with Verdugo Hills High School here in Tujunga. I have worked ever since I was 14 years old. I can truly give credit to both my parents for instilling the importance

of hard work, dedication, and having responsibilities at such a young age. My first job was scooping ice cream at Thrifty. My second job was at Big Kmart. After that, I was a cable installer for Adelphia Cable Company and then delivered for Leo’s pizza in Tujunga. I then decided that I needed to open up my own business because I had saved enough money and wanted to take a big risk. I also wanted to work for myself rather than an employer. I was operating a small neighborhood meat market with my family. The meat market was a true success, but I decided to sell it and get into the restaurant industry. Yet, another risk! Owning a restaurant took

tremendous amount of work, but I enjoyed every minute of it. After years of operating the restaurant, I decided to sell it once again and move into another business venture. I went to school and took real estate courses. I fell in love with real estate instantaneously. With ten years of experience, I’ve closed and reached multi-million dollars of production. I am here to serve my neighbors and make sure that they choose the right agent because real estate buying can be a difficult task. At present, I have several interested buyers looking for homes in your neighborhood. However, the inventory of homes for sale is very low. If you are looking

to sell your home, or know someone in the neighborhood who is, please contact me. I am going to be offering free consultation and a free market evaluation. This would also include property appraisal.

I would be thrilled to work with you. I believe that Sunland, Tujunga is a hidden jewel and I am a proud resident! Best Wishes, Alex Agadzhanyan Pinnacle Estate Properties
