unland-Tujunga loses out on Target Store moving into the Ralph’s Complex in Sunland. For the past 2-3 years there has been speculation that Target might be interested in moving in to either the old K-Mart Building or into the newly renovated Ralphs
shopping complex. Target is moving into the old Sport Chalet building in La Canada-Flintridge. Target store construction is slated to be completed in October and the building already has help wanted signs hanging from the eaves. They are hoping to hire and
train 100 workers before its opening. This Target store is called a “small format” Target and will carry a “curated” collection of merchandise and household items selected for the foothills communities. Target will carry their (Continued on Page 6)
National Night Out 2018
It was a wandering, meandering dinner as people from everywhere gathered together to celebrate our first responders, law enforcement and firefighters.
T
his was National Night Out 2018 - cowboy style! Even the small Night Out groups like Tujunga brought people from the apartments surrounding Bolton Hall and the Neighborhood Council to feast on hot dogs and hamburgers. Larger more organized ones like Lowell St., Sunland Park and Stonehurst Park brought literally hundreds of people to share ribs, tri-tips,
BBQ chicken, sausages, corn bread and tables of deserts with their local heros. Arnie Abrahamian and Phil Tabby Jr. put on a spread that was incredible in the amount of food they prepared. Their feasts were so spectacular that it was almost like watching a wave of vehicles flow from one site to another every 30 minutes, as people went from one to another reveling in
the different types of meats and deserts. NO ONE went away less than stuffed. The Stonehurst soiree’ had the most police and firefighters there with a CERT presentation thrown in, but even they travelled between the two sites. This was a free community event that everyone enjoyed. Be sure to attend the 2019 NNO in your neighborhood.

ithin 3 hours last Thursday, there were two accidents that required transportation to the hospital. One involved a motorcyclist that crashed into an on-coming car and then next one was a woman pushing her shopping cart across Valmont when she was struck by an east-bound car. Traffic deaths and accidents have increased this year by 400% of what they were last year. To counter this, two organizations were formed to create a public awareness campaign to make people think of what they are doing while driving. The first was one created and then abandoned by Eve Sinclair called Safe Streets Committee. The second one created by Jo-E Brown mobilized over 30 marchers for the 2018 4th of July parade. Carrying yellow and black placards, they had the names of the victims and dates of their accidents. This is not a new problem for our community. Over 14 years ago, The Paper created a safe driving campaign utilizing photos of the weekly, then daily accidents. There were so many accidents within a 5 year period that a special website named CAR-NAGE was set up with over 1,000 photos of injury accidents. But not everyone was happy with The Papers attempt at public awareness. Ginny Marshall Gasparre whose
daughter Michelle Wincenson was killed by a local minor driver, for reasons unknown, joined local hate groups to quash any public safety awareness campaigns. Capt. Waters called paper editor Doc into his office and stated “You have no idea how much you are accomplishing with your newspaper safe driving articles, and presented Doc with a LAFD hat.” This is when the LAFD Station 74
was still a Task Force. Traffic accidents and fatalities have increased every year, but this year, for all the grandstanding that our councilwoman is doing, her North Valley City Hall aid is creating an unfriendly atmosphere for stakeholders to even ask questions of her. After abandoning her safety group when she was given a city position by Councilwoman Rodriguez, in-fighting began between the local traffic awareness groups and traffic awareness signs were raised – and then removed – and then partially replaced. Politics play a large part in saving our citizens lives, and nothing is getting accomplished.

Jason Lives! T he Sunland-Tujunga Facebook community was panicked when the rumor started that Jason of Jason’s automotive in Tujunga had passed. Facebook denizens were crazily posting back and forth that “someone” had seen an obituary in”some” newspaper, but they couldn’t remember where. People began calling Jason’s automotive for clarification only to find that his shop was closed Sunday and Monday. People began offering to bring flowers or cookies and food to his home, but no one knew where he lived. And the angst continued until Tuesday morning when TFP staffers went to his shop

lintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts monthly storytimes (for ages 2+) with guest children’s book writers and illustrators. On Saturday, September 8, at 10:30 AM, the bookstore welcomes Salvo Lavis and James Munn, creators of World of the Weasel and authors of Once Upon a Weasel (their first book) and Wild Wild Weasel. World of the Weasel presents picture books about a young boy and his pet weasel who injects excitement into the boy’s quiet life and helps stimulate his
imagination. In Once Upon a Weasel, the weasel helps bring the boy’s space travel fantasies to life. Can a pet weasel be trained? In the second book of the series, Wild Wild Weasel, the young boy decides to tame his disruptive pet by taking him to obedience school, where he meets a number of other kids with unusual animals. The boy’s attempts to train the pet give him a greater understanding of his uniquely wild, wild Weasel-plus a chance to make some new friends along the way.
Lavis is a writer and producer who has worked in digital, video, print, and radio. He directed Oscar campaigns for the Academy Award-nominated films Timbuktu and Mustang and has produced content for Disney.com, Yahoo! Entertainment, and Live Nation. He is from Houston and lives in Los Angeles. For more information, contact Gail Mishkin at (818) 790-0717. It Was a Surprise!
Alive and laughing at his premature demise! When people misread an Obit placed next to Jason’s Honda ad (see below), the Internet went crazy. He’s alive and well in Tujunga! on Foothill Blvd. and took a photo of the ALIVE & WELL Jason.
Just a poor placement and an active mind caused a local panic.

e got a call to cover the Publishers Clearing House presentation of a $10,000 check to Dionicio Ramos, a resident of Tujunga. With balloons and cameramen standing on the small front porch, Howie Guja knocked on the front door. And knocked on the front door, and knocked on the front door. Finally there was an answer from inside. “We’ve got a surprise for you Dionicio, can you please come out?” It was then that they found that Dionicio was handicapped and was having trouble getting the door open with while sitting in his wheelchair. The look of astonishment crossed his face as he
tried to comprehend what all those people were doing on his front porch with video cameras and a large sign showing a $10,000 check! And then it came to him!
He was a winner. It was something that everyone laughs at when they see the ads on TV, but it was now – and it was his! Congratulations Dionicio!

by Carla Breitner he Saturday before Leonard Bernstein would have turned 100 on August 25, Michael Feinstein led the Pasadena POPS in a concert mixing Bernstein’s Broadway hits with New York-centric music which Bernstein would have known. Bernstein’s cheerfully optimistic “Candide Overture” and a jazzy arrangement of his “New York, New York” from “On the Town” started the evening off. Michael Feinstein shared personal anecdotes and musical history between numbers, speaking of the friendship Bernstein had with Aaron Copland (Hoe-Down from “Rodeo”) and Morton Gould (“Pavanne”). The jazz and hustle of New York City that influenced Bernstein shone in performances of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra’s “Park Avenue Fantasy” and Count Basie’s “Jumpin’ at the Woodside.” Australian soprano Ali McGregor joined the orchestra to sing an exuberant “I Can Cook Too” (“On the Town”) and lyrical “Dream with Me” (Bernstein’s 1950 “Peter Pan”). She showed off her five octave range singing “Taki Rari,” written for Peruvian singer Yma Sumac; Feinstein suggested that Bernstein might have “borrowed” from Miss Sumac for “Mambo” in “West Side Story.” The audience got a chance to listen for “Mambo” when the POPS played the “West Side Story Overture.”
T
Finn Sagal, a graduate of Michael Feinstein’s Songbook Academy for high school performers, entertained with Jule Styne & Sammy Cahn’s “Time After Time,” sung by Frank Sinatra in the film “It Happened in Brooklyn.” The orchestra then played “Sinatra Film Suite” filled with Tin Pan Alley hits arranged by Nelson Riddle. Julian Ovenden, British actor/singer, thrilled with “Something’s Coming” (“West Side Story”) and “Lucky to Be Me” (“On the Town”) before sitting down at the piano to play and sing Kander & Ebb’s “Theme from New York, New York.” For those of you keeping score, Bernstein’s “New York” (lyrics by Comden & Green) is “a helluva town!” In Kander & Ebb’s “New York,” you’re “king of the hill, top of the heap.” Special guest, Carol Lawrence, told her own stories of Bernstein from her time as the original “Maria” on Broadway in “West Side Story” in 1957. Then she brought her son, Chris Goulet, out to sing vocal obligato as she thrilled the audience with “I Feel Pretty.” To close the show, Michael Feinstein turned the baton over to POPS Resident Conductor Larry Blank and joined Finn Sagal, Ali McGregor and Julian Ovenden for a heart-felt rendition of “Somewhere.” The “peace and quiet and open air” of the LA Arboretum filled with applause for this celebration of Leonard Bernstein.

only if that spousal benefit will be higher than they are entitled to on their own work record. At full retirement age (FRA) a lower earning spouse can get 50% of the higher earning spouse’s “primary insurance amount”
(or “PIA”, what the 2nd spouse was entitled to at their FRA). But you only get that 50% if you have reached your full retirement age; if you take it earlier than that, for example at age 62, the
spousal benefit will be cut to as little as 32.5% of the higher earning spouse’s FRA benefit amount. So, is it a good idea to take your Social Security benefits at age 62? Again, it depends upon your health, financial status and your expected longevity. If you apply early, your payments are smaller, but you get more of them; if you wait to apply your payments are larger but you get fewer of them. Unless, of course, you live to a ripe old age, in which case the larger monthly payment you get by waiting will undoubtedly come in handy when you’re older and your total cumulative benefits will be more. But all of that doesn’t matter if your current health and financial status mean you

need the money now. It’s a choice only you can make. And here are a couple of final thoughts: If you continue working while collecting early benefits you’ll be subject to Social Security’s annual earnings limit ($17,040 for 2018). But if your current health issues are severe enough that you can’t continue working, you may want to consider applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. If approved, SSDI benefits would be based upon your FRA benefit amount, resulting in a higher benefit at an earlier age. And you can file for both early retirement benefits and SSDI at the same time, which would allow you to collect benefits earlier while your SSDI application is being considered.

Senator Hertzberg – Final Version of SB 10 Unveiled (Continued from page 7) careful balance, protecting public safety and leveling the playing field for all individuals in our criminal justice system.” “The Western Center on Law and Poverty supports SB 10 because its passage will end the intent and deliberative use of wealth as a measure of whether or not a person is be released following an arrest. By ending money bail and ensuring that people will not be subject to monetary conditions of release, we will also stop the transfer of assets from low-income communities of color to the $2 Billion private for-bail industry. California’s current status quo, which jails people for benign charges because they cannot afford to pay bail, coerces innocent people to plead guilty to crimes they didn’t commit and increases the likelihood that people will fail to prove their innocence at trial. SB 10 is a game changer
and an important next step in reforming California’s criminal justice system.” Jessica Bartholow, Policy Advocate, Western Center Law & Poverty; Chairperson, California Asset Building Coalition “California must take the opportunity in SB 10 to make our communities safer and end the racially and economically unjust application of cash bail that impacts SEIU members and our state. The momentum behind SB 10 is strong and we can’t miss the chance to move justice forward this year, while continuing to press for further reforms.” - Laphonza Butler, President, SEIU Local 2015 “California must take the opportunity in SB 10 to make our communities safer and end the racially and economically unjust application of cash bail that impacts SEIU members and our state. The momentum behind SB 10 is strong and
we can’t miss the chance to move justice forward this year, while continuing to press for further reforms.” Lenore Anderson, Executive Director, Californians for Safety and Justice. “The Anti-Recidivism Coalition supports SB 10. ARC members know all too well the traumas and difficulties created by spending even a single day in jail as a result of not being able to post bail. SB 10 is an important first step in the right direction towards reforming the current system. A system that has negatively impacted Californians, especially people of color living in impoverished communities. ARC will remain committed to fighting alongside partners and end the cash bail system.” – Anti-Recidivism Coalition “The money bail system in California is fundamentally unjust, resulting in too many people being jailed simply because they are
poor and cannot afford bail. Californians don’t want to wait any longer, and by passing SB 10 this year, our leaders in Sacramento have the opportunity to end money bail and take a bold step
towards a more equitable criminal justice system.” Arnie Sowell, Vice President of California Policy, NextGen America The bill now moves to the Assembly Floor for a vote.
BREAKING NEWS!!!
S
enator Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, and Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) today applauded their colleagues in the Assembly for voting to pass SB 10, the California Money Bail Reform Act, calling it a critical first step in tackling reforms that must be made to California’s criminal justice system. Senator Hertzberg stated: “It is no secret that our criminal justice system has a host of issues that must be addressed. Eliminating wealth as a determination in pretrial detention would
be a groundbreaking first step in making our criminal justice system fairer and safer. In the Jewish tradition, Pirkei Avot teaches us: ‘You are not obligated to complete the task, but neither are you free to desist from it.’ The California Legislature will continue to examine bail reform, and strengthen SB 10’s data collection and reporting requirements in order to evaluate our progress. I look forward to the future, when we can all look back at a time when we wrongly let for-profit businesses decide who stayed in jail.”
