Portfolio Davide Innocenzi

At times this portofolio may look like as a self-ma de retrospective creative monography. This is not due to a huge ego that blinds me in front of not relevant works.

The choice has rather been motivated by the will of narrating in the most complete and honest way my own personal development. In this sense, the usage of the latinism “in fieri” as a personal alias is not a casuality - an open-heart construction site.

After a short roundups on different scale design experiments, more consistent works are shown in details.

Something more than a portfolio. Something less then a personal manifesto.

Before introducing in a detailed way more con sistent projects this section is dedicated to the the introductive works done during the first year at university. Their relevance is not enough to have a dedicated page and description for each one. However in the following pages they are exposed as an interesting starting point, able to underline my own sensi bile perception and expressing abilities development during the study years.

They can be considered as the first hands-on expe riences, which led to the first face-to-face approach with drawing softwares.

Can an abandoned eleven-story building in the centre of São Paulo be converted in something dif ferent than a building speculation? The goal of the project was to show that architecture is a human right. Social actions must be put in place to re-e stablish this universal right and architects are among the actors of this social revolution.

A social, economical and architectural plan was developed where interventions were thought to involve the less amount of money possible, to create something more than social housing. It’s an entire ecosystem able to host more than 500 people and their activities, aiming to contribute to the reintegration of less wealthy people in the society.

A Place of Safety.

Not spaces nor shapes and colours. And certainly not money.

People - that’s what architecture is about.

Scuole Nuove

Communicating historic buildings architecture can be a difficult task. It requires a deep understanding of the architecture, its history and people. Afterwards a graphic language made of colours, fonts and shapes can be established.

The case of “Scuole Nuove” was even more difficult because of its historic relationship with fascism. Should this be communicated or totally deleted in a politically correct war? After a complete historic research the answer was clear: sadly, history cannot be cancelled, but caution and intelligence is required when approaching it because while communicating architecture you’re also sharing its message, its inten tions and the culture it represents.

Because of the building age and relevance, research involved consultation of historic archives and city council representatives.

PhD School

At the end of 2019, University of Sassari called for ideas aiming to develop the visual idenity for its PhD School, an organization able to gather all the docto rate activities across departments.

The goal was to create an identity able to represent the organization without getting into old style illustrative icons. The output had to be something iconic and unique but in the same time customizable for each department. Also the current University visual identity had to be respected.

So gestures, objects and traditions became traces.

Words, letters and their typographical represanta tions overlapped. And diversities became colours.

Looking for a method

Combing through the Design Masters works and essays is a good way to establish a personal design method. Through reading and drawing experiences across his works, Bruno Munari shortly became one of those Masters who seems had better words than ours to express doubts and solutions. His method had become a way of thinking across design cathegorical boundaries.

Not only products, but also graphic and architecture. Because “when you can design one thing, you can design everything”, from a tiramisù to a city.

Architecture for a better culture, where projects are at the service of humans, enhancing and encouraging their diversities.

Architecture between you and me, and between us and the environment as a respectful case. So that besides the research of shapes there can be a meaning: dwelling in a sustainable way. With this in mind an architectural machine made of customizable units comes to life, enhancing its special location in Barcelona city centre.

Façades are intended as both an output and mani festo of what happens inside.

Can a tennis racket become something more? After a long research and meditation on what a racket is, means and how it’s made, its intrinsic design prin ciples and meanings were exposed. Afterwards they became the focus of a product design experience which led to the development of a customizable and sustainable shelving system.

Il Tempio del Vetro

The history of glass usage in architecture and design, studied and exposed. A spacial narration of the landmarks has been developed in what became a temple, a church made of glass.

Its plan was developed as a church, with a central nave and a trasept, hosting pieces. Objects chosen were exposed at an accessible height and with the right light. But what about architecture? Neon traces were “drawn” in the space, as a remambrance of the use of glass.

The use of mirror helped creating a big “dreamlike” space.

La Scuola del Progetto

To introduce the new academic paths available at the Alghero Architecture, Design and Urban Planning Department at the University of Sassari, an entire communication strategy should have been developed keeping in mind: future students and their families, actual students and their families, alumni, teachers, and support staff.

Starting from what we do, we developed who we are.

There’s something more besides traces and dots, drawings and skecthes. Behind an .ai, .psd or .indd there’s usually a .docx. And sometimes even a .jpeg. I enjoy writing about design and architecture. The aim is to share the deepness of visual arts to non-insiders.

Some of my reflections have been published on my social media accounts such as Issuu, Medium or Instagram.

Furthermore I’ve had the chance to take part of support staff of Summer Schools developing the desire to take part into the divulgative and educational area of design.

Finally I often experience taking photos, mostly intended as points of view on spaces.
