PHASE I : FORGOTTEN COAST Florida’s “Forgotten Coast“ contains a rich variety of constructed and natural conditions that are evenly distributed along its many coastal communities. These towns are accompanied by transitional areas in between them which encompass a collection of natural landscapes that preserve the memories of what has transpired along the region; from the impact of natural disasters, to the traces of abandoned settlements; acting as a mediator for this everchanging environment. Traveling along the “Forgotten Coast“ allowed for the careful exploration and documentation of the surrounding areas, where the element of water quickly became an aspect of interest due to its ephemerality. Each moment of pause along the way, contained a unique sensorial quality of water, whether it was quiet but physically framed within the landscape, or loud, but visually hidden from plain sight.

A series of iterational model studies was generated to understand the contrast and connections between the varied man-made and natural sceneries encountered along the “Forgotten Coast“. Each model incorporates a unique approach at interpreting the relationship between the rigid edges of a coastal town or city and the organic thresholds of nature. The methods of assembly ranged from the stacking and intertwining of materials held together through compression, to the use of adhesive agents which allowed for the testing of structural frameworks. Additionally, testing involved the study of how rigid materials react to elements like fire to generate organic results. These methods of construction involved the use of an array of materials including wood, metal, cardboard, rubber, paper, mylar and yarn.

The assemblage of the large scale model allowed for a tailored comprehension of the region, where the consolidation of different ideals is manifested as one whole. The abstraction of elements filters and highlights the essential information in the area. 09

PHASE II : GULF’S GATEWAY Known as the Florida Panhandle’s Gateway to the Gulf, Carrabelle is constantly adapting to the various bodies of water surrounding the area.

Fig. 08. Analytical study model of Carrabelle’s town grid in relationship to Timber Island’s natural grid across the Carrabelle River.

Within the region the Carrabelle, New and Crooked Rivers, act as the main dividers between the urban and rural territories of the community, shaping the land and spreading towards the coastal waters of Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This phenomenon becomes an opportunity to research and study the ephemeral qualities of water within the “Forgotten Coast” stretch.

Divided into three main sections, the transect explores the unique qualities from the coast of Franklin County at varied scales of research; starting from the rural regions of the area, followed by the intertwined rivers engulfing the town of Carrabelle, and culminating in the shores of St. George Sound. The construct operates as the catalyst between the various phases of the project, comparing and contrasting the built and natural conditions along the Forgotten Coast, as well as delving into the specific conditions of the town of Carrabelle and its surrounding areas. A series of techniques is employed throughout the drawing in order to interpret and relate the layers of analytical data found within the region. The base drawing utilizes a digital array of line-work based on the geographic, topographic and geological data of the area. The base drawing is then collaged with factual information at various scopes of research, represented through strategic incisions, layered textures, historic photography, sound waves, documented flora, soil profiles, tide charts, mappings, and hand drawn data that generate a carefully constructed narrative.

The analysis of Carrabelle and its surrounding cultural and natural context, allowed for an informed planification of dwellings located within the shoreline of Timber Island.

The constructs main itinerary is focused on generating habitable spaces that engage the natural environment for seasonal occupants of the “Forgotten Coast”, known as the Florida snowbird. The dynamic of having an on and off season of inhabitants tailored the program to include spaces of duality where research-based production by artistscientists and the exhibition of said work by tourist-scholars can unfold within each season. An array of spatial methods of design is employed to address the close proximity of the dwellings to the Carrabelle River. The challenges are taken as opportunities to explore and test spatial instances that engage with the element of water as an everchanging component.

Phase III: Ephemeral Ruins · Conceptualize / Design / Envision · 2019

PHASE III : EPHEMERAL RUINS The Ephemeral Ruins construct synthesizes the concepts of inhabitating and experiencing the ephemerality of water. Each dwelling is located at each of the three ends of the main structure, generating an individual approach and experience towards the water. The outer dwelling, located over the river, has the opportunity to have a direct and singular interaction with the water below. The shoreline dwelling, located between land and water, witnesses the changing tide cycles of the river. The inner dwelling, located inland, experiences the river through underground man-made carvings that filter the water within the structure. These three dwellings are connected through a set of communal spaces that allow the inhabitants to have the opportunity to interact with one another as well as share their experiences. The main exterior area materializes the concept of hovering and bridging over the water. The design is employed through a series of layers which filter the high tide waters through porous material mesh, and a top layer of movable panel flooring set up for creative compositions.

A secondary exterior area is located next to the primary exterior area as an extension to the shoreline dwelling. This space is positioned at a lower level, allowing it to be directly affected by the low and high tide cycles from the Carrabelle River. Similarly to the primary exterior space, the low and high tides of the river influence the way in which the space is experienced.

At low tides, the area becomes occupiable, encouraging dwellers to make use of the temporary qualities of the space. At high tides, the space becomes submerged underwater, washing away the debris left behind by its occupants and starting the cycle anew. The conditions are naturally set up by the ephemeral qualities of water, allowing for a thorough study of its dynamic characteristics.

The Ephemeral Ruins project is composed of a primary heavyweight structure reaching out into the Carrabelle River and a secondary lightweight set of smaller scale dwellings that are strategically embedded into it. Each dwelling shares a modular format that adapts its layout according to its position within the ruins. The proposed material qualities for each dwelling consist of a lightweight wood-frame structural system that is inserted into the main stone bearing wall structural system within the project. These systems work alongside tempered glass to allow for a certain degree of transparency and translucency to be incorporated within the construct.
