AN AUTONOMOUS CHANGE URBAN LIFE AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES MORGAN GUNDLACH ADVISER: DAVID JURCA

Autonomous: Independent; existing and functioning as an independent organism. (of a vehicle) navigated and maneuvered by a computer, without a need for human control or intervention under normal road conditions. Autonomous Vehicle (or AV, driverless car, self-driving car): a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. AutoVots: Autonomous Vehicles which pick-up and drop-off single passengers sequentially. TaxiBots: Autonomous Vehicles that can be shared simultaneously by several passengers.

Self- Driving Cars Will Transform the Human Environment, Trends E-Magazine, 2015.

Autonomous vehicles will signiďŹ cantly alter the experience of the city environment.* *Architecture, structures, infrastructure, circulation patterns, services, ext.

The Secret Life INSIGHTS

There will be a lot of ‘leftover’ surface. Roadway, parking, driveway, ext. The entry sequence into a(ny) building could dramatically change. Freedom of pick-up and drop-off location will alter approach. How will we identify our intended vehicles? A city core could return to pedestrian heavy traffic circulation patterns.

Experience Map: (1) shows the journey a customer has while experiencing a product or service. Mapping the experience from a customer perspective helps organizations identify strategic opportunities, customer pain-points and generate innovative projects. (2) The map is meant to be a catalyst, not a conclusion, the takeaways drive the next phase of the design or strategy by illuminating the journey, and helping to identify the opportunities, pain points, and calls to action.

THOUGHTS

+

+ +

Need to leave early; 7:30 am meeting. Should I stop to get bagels?

+

I wish I didn’t need the car. Should I join a carpool? It is sunny- bring sunglasses! Do I need to brush off the snow or defrost the windows? It is raining- bring umbrella!

DESTINATION

+

+ +

Still tired- stop for coffee? Why did I park so far away? The car needs a good wash. Oops! Forgot the keys. Ah! I’m running late! Will there be extra traffic?

is car avaliable? accessible? in good condition?

+

+ + +

I love this radio station! The windows are taking a long time to defrost. Is the air conditioner broken?

+

+

+

Bagels, bagels, bagels.

+

If I hit any more traffic I will be late to the meeting. Do I know any shortcuts?

+

+

Someone is in my spot! Why is parking so expensive?

Is five over speeding? How about ten? I need to make up some time.

+

Incoming call? I’ll get it later.

+

I like parking under this shade tree.

+

I did not wear appropriate shoes today. The sunshine is pleasant, but I left my sunglasses in the car.

+

I guess I could walk in the shade.

+

It is difficult to carry my bag, get my keys out, open doors, and not drop the bagels.

I have arrived (almost) early! Maybe I should leave home early more often. Don’t forget to bring in the bagels. They are a little cold.

+

+

+

I stayed later than intended. I do not want to drive all the way home. I need to find my ticket. This parking lot is poorly lit and I feel unsafe. I Should walk quickly to the vehicle.

+

+ +

+

I should get better car music. On my way home!
