a bioclimatic school project is located in TbeanhisSaint-Martin, in the CaribSea, in a tropical region. This school is planned to replace the old one that was completely destroyed in 2017 by the hurricane Irma, which was a huge trauma for the whole island. While designing, we asked ourselves a lot of questions for school to overcome the specificities of its location and the challenges of tomorrow. How to design a building that can face the future extreme earthquakes and hurricanes? How to design a green project, suited for this tropical climate, by using bioclimatic principles already used in this climate for centuries? How to design a school that can evolve in time, to always adapt to the evolution of the pedagogy, for the next decades to come?
Type : Invited
All these layers of questions, combined together, created our design proposal.

Like living in a village he site is between a suburban area Tapartment in the North and multiple large buildings in the South. A
transition of scale and shape is operated on the site with the reuse of typical house typologies and the scale of a multiple stories volume.
We paid particular attention to the landscaping. In respect of the existing housing operation on the West, we extended the existing rivulet and designed green spaces for the futur pedestrians and inhabitants. The common spaces needed for the project, built in light wood structures, are nested into this landscaping. Due to the high declivity in the site between the semi-detached houses and the apartment uildings, the parking lot makes up for the base of the building, its roof welcoming huge private terraces for the lower apartment. For the neighborhood, the project becomes an urban sewing. It creates openness and a new urban space that welcomes ever yone.
