Block Studies At the beginning of first year studio, little is understood of form, space, and order. One must start from the ground up. Starting with the simplest of all forms, the line, each block further explores form making and craft by adding a dimension. Finally, the armature combines the ideas behind each block into a final idea of form.

Unit Study How can one be created from many? Starting with drawings which conglomerate the cube studies, one drawing pops, showing potential for aggregation and linking. From this drawing, a unit is created, which, when aggregated, can link with itself to create a curtain wall.

Unit Wall Continuing from the unit study, the studio is divided into teams. Each team is to construct a unit that can be built into a wall, a seating arrangement, and a spacial arrangement. The driving idea behind this design is a mother-child geometry combined with the feeling of wrapping. The construction consists of bent sheet metal and rivets.

Spatial Construction In a full studio collaboration, a human scale promenade is designed with site considerations. Starting with figure-ground studies, the personal space study models plays with apertures to create unique lighting effects. Studio sections choose a study to iterate and construct. Each constructed space is connected to create a promenade. This space was created using the ideas of wrapping and space reaching out. Each constructed space is lined up to create a human scale promenade.

Building from Within Thinking of design program, one must create a space that fits human proportions. Starting with basic human measuring, a mock club space evolves, which is fitted to the measured human. Five different poses from in the club space shape the abstraction of space the precedes the final design. The 5 abstractions combine to make a space called Club Metabolism.

Drawings and Renderings Starting with little artistic experience, each drawing is a new step forward. Skills of representation are acquired through several media, including both hand and computer. Through these media, space and detail are explored and understood.
