When we went to court the second time, Sassy Pants magically provided a bogus piece of insurance documentation, and the judge accepted it. The judge told me that since Sassy Pants decided to plead “nolo contendere” and he, in fact, provided insurance information that day, there was nothing he could do to make him or anyone pay my $250. Sassy Pants got no penalty whatsoever, and he only had to pay about $50 in court fees. All I could think was . . . Ain’t that some shit? A few weeks ago at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner and Auction, filmmaker Lee Daniels said, “I’m not asking for more rights. I’m not asking for special rights. I’m not asking for civil rights. I just want my fucking rights, my human rights.”

From now on I’ll be looking both ways when I pass any adult video store. You never know who will change your life in an instant. Hang on for the ride, don’t text and drive, and don’t forget to watch where you step if you end up in a video se es store parking lot. J t ac nt o C

Sassy Pants and I were just two gay individuals trying to get along in our day, yet I was the victim and didn’t even get a ticket. If the law protects people who lie and produce fake documentation, what hope does any honest person, gay or straight, have in situations like these?

.

It made me think about Sassy Pants, and the whole situation. Daniels was talking about being a gay man and the struggles that we face every day in receiving our basic rights.

an

I had to wait five weeks before my insurance company officially determined he was uninsured, after numerous attempts to contact him, and we proceeded

After our first court date, the judge gave Sassy Pants an additional month to provide his insurance information to my insurance agent and allow time for “everything to be settled.” It cost over $4,000 to get my car fixed plus another $800 for the car rental. Fortunately, I only had to pay $250, since I have uninsured motorists insurance. Sassy Pants never produced any insurance information to my insurance company.

jh

What has happened since then really made me question our legal system. I reported everything to my insurance company. Sassy Pants did not. He couldn’t. He had no insurance. Somehow he was able to rent that car though.

to get my car fixed using the uninsured motorist part of my insurance. I also had to go to court twice, take off work and battle downtown traffic each time, feeling a bit humiliated as the system pushed us through the cattle call of traffic court zombies.

at

Oh, and the best part is that before the police officer drove off Sassy Pants had the nerve to ask me out. “You know, you are kind of cute. We should get coffee or a drink after our court case.” Fat chance, I thought. I just half-smiled and drove off.

k

Inevitably, the police officer went right to his patrol car and wrote him a ticket and instructed us both to be at traffic court a month later.

oc

Sassy Pants was unusually flirty and failed to tell me that he was driving a rental car and that he had no proof of insurance. When the police officer finally arrived, he asked Sassy Pants what happened. Most people would think it would be smart to cooperate and maybe be somewhat polite to a cop in such a situation, but little Miss Sassy Pants rolled his eyes and smacked his lips like you wouldn’t believe, and he said something like, “Can’t YOU see what happened?” Maybe he was embarrassed or tired of waiting around?

nc

How nice. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon. I kept hoping none of my friends would drive by and see me there.

Ha

The impact was quick, and I pulled my car over into the parking lot and got out unscathed but pissed, mostly because I needed to get to work and knew I would be missing work that day and a day’s pay. As we stood there and exchanged info it was so surreal. I realized we were standing on and around used condoms, empty Red Bull cans, and bird shit-covered concrete as we awkwardly waited for the police to arrive for almost an hour, chit-chatting about nothing important.

A.

A

few months ago I was driving to work one afternoon when one of the queeniest queens in town came speeding out of an adult video store parking lot into the road and T-boned right into my car. Sassy Pants had evidently just had an experience of some sort in one of the viewing booths and was so busy texting someone about it that he failed to look up.

The Brent Star Report

“You’re AMAZING…

I

just the way you are!”

love God, but my heart goes out to those gay individuals who want to end their lives because they believe that being “gay” is “abomination” before God. Then there are those who don’t believe in the Almighty and are still depressed b/c “society” makes fun of you and try to limit who you can love. Ok, let me start with the ‘religious’ beliefs first, cause those girls are stressing me out (not the religion itself, but some of those leaders)! Like those extremists over there at Westbury Baptist Church who go around protesting funerals of soldiers, they REALLY think all the bad things that’s happening now in this world is because America is ‘gay tolerant’. Sadly, some of the other “normal” churches can also be extremist too like having “classes” to help you “overcome being gay” (like Eddie Long’s church, but that’s another column). For all the hate crime in this world towards gay men, I blame most of it on some of the religious leaders telling, preaching, and shouting that ‘being gay is wrong!’ Wake up honey, this ain’t the 1950s, YOU’RE the one creating most of the bullying in this country. They should stop b/c God ain’t told ANY of them to carry on like that. That’s all Man honey. I mean come on, do you REALLY think God is in a box or that one dimensional? “Oh look, those faggots down there are acting all faggotry. I’m APALLED; I’ve never seen anything like this!!! I shall use my powers and send them DISATORS!!! And I shall also destroy some of the straight folks just for being tolerant of gay ppl as well”. Um…seriously, do you think God is “surprised” that he created gay folks? Let me say that again (and shut up non believers I’m talking to those who believe in God) do you think ‘God’ is ‘surprised’ that HE created gay folks? In other words, he created you my friend to be just the way you are. Speaking of which, when you look around at his creations, notice how he never creates just one of anything…like there are tons of different flowers, fish of the sea, insects (to this day, I still the understand why he created roaches! They are killing!), I mean even with us humans, he created a cornucopia of multiple types, different colors, sizes, loud ones, sneaky ones, some believe, some don’t, haters, lovers, and when it comes to sex, is this where you think he said “um…there should only be ONE type of sex”. Hmm, how convenient it is to say that we, as a human race, can be ANYTHING he wants us to be but happy, oops I mean, gay?. How ‘convenient’ it is for this

14 davidatlanta

country to tell us that the Bible says being gay is not only abomination before God but also you are going to hell and can’t marry who you love while you’re on Earth WHEN IN FACT the Bible ALSO says “THY.SHALL. NOT. KILL” but this country loves to HONOR those soldiers who do just that (I respect them btw, I’m just using this example). They go out, with orders to kill and destroy and come back home for us to yell out “HEROES!” So you’re saying this country is supposed to love the men that KILL other men, but hate the men that love other men?

That, my friend, is what you call a ‘severe case of hypocrisy’ from hell honey!

For those who don’t believe in God but allows ‘society’ to put you in a depression…um, that’s even worse. WHY would you let another man tell YOU how to be YOU? Remember, it doesn’t matter what you believe in, just remember YOU have the last call. You are your closest friend, you will be with yourself more than ANYONE throughout your life, so basically at the end of the day, YOU have the final say so. Try to live your life as if YOU are the boss of your life! So since you’re the boss of yourself, when are going to let YOU make decisions for your damn company and stop letting everyone else tell you how YOU supposed to damn feel, how YOU suppose to walk and talk,… ok, ok, let me step down from the soap box. I’m a little high right now, but I hope (and for some of you, I pray) that I’m reaching those hate themselves for being gay and just don’t realize that you are amazing just the way you are. Remember, you’re the boss, now act like it! Until next week bitchessssss, don’t read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report! ‘Drop Dead Diva’ Delivers Third Season

By Jesse A. Hancock Photos by Sony Pictures Television / Kevin Lynch

W

hen it comes to locations for television and film production, most people think of huge cities like New York or California. However, Metro Atlanta and Georgia are quickly becoming known worldwide as the “Hollywood of the South,” thanks to generous state tax credits offered to production companies. According to www.georgia.org more than 700 film and television projects have been shot in Georgia including recently, “The Blind Side,” “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” and “Zombieland.” Television production companies are also flocking to Georgia to produce such shows as The CW’s

“The Vampire Diaries,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” and Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva,” which is filmed in Peachtree City. “Diva” launches its third season on June 19 and brings an all-star list of special guests who will surely delight fans. “This is going to be our best season yet,” said Executive Producer Josh Berman. “Our first episode alone has Paula Abdul, LeAnn Rimes, Wendy Williams, Mario Lopez and Nick Zano. It’s fantastic. This year we are really luck that the stars have kind of embraced the show and are coming to us now, which is such a pleasure. I absolutely love filming in Georgia.

“Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Second Season” is now available on DVD. For Jane Bingum, life really is more wonderful the second time around in this wild second season. Thrown a whole new set of curves, including the arrival of her “secret” husband, this model-in-alawyer’s-body continues to learn about her past while charting a bold new future. Season Two features special guest appearances by Paula Abdul, Vivica A. Fox, Rosie O’Donnell and more.

davidatlanta 27

The people there have so embraced us. Given these tax incentives we are able to have better sets than we could ever hope to have in Los Angeles.” The show was created by Berman, who began his writing career on the first season of CBS’s “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” He remained with the series for six seasons, and exited as an executive producer. While working on “CSI,” Berman earned two Emmy nominations. He also spent three seasons as a writer and consulting producer on Fox’s “Bones,” and he created, executive produced, and wrote for Fox’s “Vanished” and “Killer Instinct.” On “Drop Dead Diva,” the main character is Jane Bingum, played by Brooke Elliott. Jane, an unusual leading character, is the reincarnation of Deb, an aspiring model killed in a car crash who gets brought back to life as an intelligent, overweight lawyer, hoping to find the meaning of inner beauty. The people in Jane’s life are there to support and sometimes

“It’s really fun to be on a regular show, a hit show. You don’t get a lot of moments as an actor to just take a breath and know you are good for a while. It’s the closest thing to a regular job I’ll ever get as an actor.” Ben Feldman (Fred) challenge her in her quest to become a better person. Her secretary, Teri Lee, is played by comedienne Margaret Cho. Shows come and go, and many get lost on the cutting room floor, but Berman and the cast believe this show has staying power. “What inspired me to create this show was my relationship with my grandmother, which is not what you’d expect to hear from me,” said Berman. “I had a really inspirational grandmother. Her whole family perished in the Holocaust, but she got out just before. She was under five feet tall and pudgy, yet she carried herself like a supermodel and instilled in me the confidence that I could do anything I wanted. Her name was ‘Deb,’ which is the model who dies and comes back as Jane, so that’s sort of my tribute to her. Like Jane, the person my grandmother was on the inside didn’t reflect who she was on the outside, and that really didn’t matter. I wanted to capture that in Jane. In fact, at the end of every episode is my company 28 davidatlanta

logo, which is my grandparents at their wedding and them again at their 45th wedding anniversary.” Berman, who is openly gay, said he was also very close to his grandfather. “When I came out, my grandfather’s instant response, at age 75, was, ‘Yea, well some people have blue eyes and some people have brown eyes.’ It was just never an issue.” The show has a huge gay fan base, which Berman said is because he thinks gay people relate to the character of Jane, an outsider, and he is happy with her character’s progression and the story’s progression into season three. “At times we all see ourselves as Jane, someone who doesn’t always feel like she fits in, “said Berman. “I love writing the evolution of Jane and watching her mature. I also enjoy sinking my teeth into the more serious legal cases.” According the Berman, the fifth episode of the season will be the biggest. It’s based on the true story of the lesbian teen who was denied access to her senior prom. “I was at the GLAAD Awards last year and heard Wanda Sikes speak about it, and at that moment I was inspired to write an episode of “Diva” that would kind of be our anti-bullying episode,” said Berman. “That’s kind of the centerpiece of the episode, and it’s a really important topic.” Ben Feldman plays Fred, an angel sent to watch over Jane and guide her along her quest to find inner beauty. Interview with Ben Feldman (Fred)

David Magazine: What can fans expect this season from your character, Fred?

Ben: Third seasons are fun. First season you’re kind of finding your legs and figuring out everything. Second seasons you start to find a system. By third season everyone in the cast is comfortable. There is a lot of history between the characters, and there are a lot of relationships that have already happened. Fred specifically spent the first season pining over Stacy. He spent the second season trying to make her jealous. Now the two of them are finally getting into it, and it’s getting sexy. Fred is still watching over Jane. He’ll be doing a lot more of that this season. I think he sort of fell out of touch with that for a while because he was so taken by Stacy. He’s back in Jane’s life more now. David Magazine: How do you like filming and living here just outside Atlanta?

Ben: Atlanta is now like our home. Even Margaret (Cho) tells people she is from Atlanta. I’m a Falcons fan now, and I’m going to try to be a Braves fan. I’ve eaten everything there is to eat in Atlanta, and I’ve drank everything there is to drink. I keep coming back for more. It’s a cool town. I dig it. David Magazine: What projects are you working on besides ‘Drop Dead Diva?’

Ben: The show is my life right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. You start to worry about that more toward the end of the season. Come back and ask me about that when we are shooting episode 11. I’ll give you a list of what I’m working on. I do have a side business. I have my own wine label with a good friend of mine. That takes up a lot of energy and a lot of money. I’m also doing a lot of traveling. It’s really fun to be on a regular show, a hit show. You don’t get a lot of moments as an actor to just take a breath and

“When I came out, my grandfather’s instant response, at age 75, was, ‘Yea, well some people have blue eyes and some people have brown eyes.’ It was just never an issue.” Executive Producer Josh Berman

Ben: It depends. If I’m going to go to the bar and have whiskey, it’s Jackson (Hurst), who plays Grayson Kent. If I’m going to watch ‘The Bachelor’ with someone, it’s Kate (Levering), who plays the sometimes-evil Kim Kaswell. Everyone gets along so well. We’re a family, and they call me the ‘cruise director’ because I force everyone to get off their asses and go to new restaurants and stuff like that.

David Magazine: What else would you like David Magazine readers to know? Ben: The most important thing is for fans to watch. We all love Atlanta, and we love our jobs. The longer people keep watching, the longer we’ll be able to keep doing this.

Season Three of “Drop Dead Diva” begins Sunday June 19 on Lifetime.

know you are good for a while. It’s the closest thing to a regular job I’ll ever get as an actor.

David Magazine: Tell us more about your wine business.

Ben: It’s a Santa Barbara wine, a sirah. You can get it in a bunch of really great restaurants in Los Angeles, and we’re going to start to expand that more. You can always get it online. It’s called Angelica Cellars and the site is www.angelicacellars.com. It’s really good wine. It’s kind of Frenchy with a lot of minerality, spice, coco, pepper. David Magazine: What do you think makes ‘Drop Dead Diva’ so successful?

Ben: It’s funny, and it’s really great cast. We all got lucky to have each other, and the writers have found a great way to write for everyone. I think people can relate to this show, and people watch shows to escape. When you add that sort of supernatural element to it, it’s a happy show that takes you away and lets you dream of what life would be like in that sort of a situation. It puts a smile on people’s faces, and that’s the kind of show people want in the summer I think. They don’t want something terribly heavy. David Magazine: The show touches on a lot of serious topics, yet it stays funny.

Ben: Yes, it’s a really great combination of sad and happy moments, which I’m thrilled about. I’m pretty bummed out if I’m doing something either really serious or just slapstick and goofy. It’s a great balance. David Magazine: Which of your cast members do you have the most fun with in real life?

Josh Berman, Executive Producer davidatlanta davidatlanta 29 29

Selections include My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story medlies, as well as “Summertime” from Porgy & Bess, “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, “Memory” from Cats and, of course, “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. Although known internationally as a jazz fusion singer and voted Creative Loafing’s Best Jazz Artist multiple times, Gwen’s roots are actually in musical theater. 8:00 p.m. at Seven Stages, 1105 Euclid Avenue in Little 5 Points through June 19. Imagine finding the most perfect man in the world: muscular, beautiful, nearlynaked and standing on a street corner in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Add to the scenario two drag queens, a prostitute, a senile neighbor, a murder mystery and you’ve got “Mr. Universe.” Jim Grimsley’s play weaves a funny, nefarious southern-gothic tale about beauty, truth and self-identity in the idealistic pursuit of normality and perfection. For tickets and more information, go to www.7stages.org.

Horoscopes Aries Your emotional side is dominant lately, and that could mean that you’ve got to break it down for your family or partner. Once they see you this way, they are sure to respect you quite a bit more in the future.

SAGITTARIUS You’re feeling a sense of disconnection from someone or something that should be a big part of your life -- but the odds are good that it’s only temporary! Make sure that you see the big picture.

TAURUS Tell the world how you feel -- they need to see that you’ve got some serious emotional issues, even if they can’t really help out just yet. Write a blog post, talk to a good friend or sit your loved ones down.

CAPRICORN You need to deal with the big issues in the only way you know how -- honestly and forthrightly. If anyone around you tries to dance around them, cut them off with a quick word.

GEMINI Your financial situation is getting weirder by the day, but not so much that you can’t handle it. Just take a deep breath, get a friend or pro to help and make sure you handle everything up front.

AQUARIUS You’re going through some emotional business that isn’t exactly fun, but is sure to be good for you -- like going to the gym or taking your medicine. Endure it for now and things should be better soon.

CANCER You may feel as if someone is following you all week -- but not in a scary way! In fact, it may feel as if your guardian angel has decided to step up their activities, so you can relax and let loose!

PISCES Add a little romance to your life this week -- send a mash note, say hi to a new cutie or just head home early to spend some extra time with your partner. It’s the perfect time to express your feelings through action!

Leo You have found that there are days in which you’re much more easily riled up -- and then there are days like the recent ones, when you’ve got your emotions bottled up in the best way possible. VIRGO You need to get organized -- which may seem redundant, but you know it’s true nonetheless. Make sure that all your papers and thoughts are easy to track down when you need them the most. LIBRA Life gets messy this week -- though not so much that you have to give up and run away! You just need to deal with stressful schedules or big disruptions in your work flow, but it all starts to get manageable next week. SCORPIO You may stumble into fortuitous circumstances this week, so be ready to take advantage of it quickly. Life is getting better steadily, and you’re sure to like the place you find yourself in next weekend. 42 davidatlanta

Bitch Session

Please stop blaming others for your inferiority complex or for not being hit on in a bar. It has everything to do with that chip on your shoulder, There are just as many, if not more, which you so proudly show off. married, military, child-raising gays in the “gayborhood” as there are out. Get over I love butt ugly guys like I love root canals. It requires shutting my eyes yourself. tightly and bracing for impact. I went to your bar on Memorial Day. It was closed??? It should remain closed for good!!! I don’t know why everyone says they hate this city. I love it! So many hot guys willing (Visitor from Philadelphia) to put out. Am I being too nice? I’m unable to find a decent guy in person. Too much drama in Metro Atlanta! I would give you the shirt off my back, but the trick from the night before stole it.

You smell like yesterday.

To the judgmental queens who were ragging on a friend of a friend at a party just because he gets around on MARTA: FYI he does own a car. He doesn’t drive because he needs eye surgery. By the way, he’s also a great guy. There are some people who shouldn’t shoot their mouths off about people and their situations when they don’t know the facts. My profile says “versatile.” That means it’s either both ways or no way.

Attention twinks: skinny and athletic is hot, sunken-eyed and anorexic is not.

Lay off us escorts. Prostitution is a calling with many hazards, but it knows what people need and can’t get otherwise. That’s why every society accommodates it. I don’t understand why you won’t return my phone call after we spent three years together.

You can have a low libido or strict monogamy, For someone with no job and “no money” but not both. you sure go out a lot more than I do, and I I love the festivals at the park all summer, have more than one job! Quit whining about but the awful traffic and jacked-up parking being broke and asking me for money. You prices make me wonder if it’s really worth it. don’t have time for me unless you think I’m giving you money, but you’re getting it from somewhere.

Why is it that people who complain that bars are full of boring, ugly people assume that they are neither?

New to ATL but not to gay life. There are so many lost people trying to find love. Love is a gift, not a commodity.

YOU are “just not feeling it?” Wow, you have some nerve. You don’t look anything like your profile pic! I was thinking the same thing. If you hadn’t spent most of our first date talking about yourself there might have been a second one. Try listening for a change. It’s a conversation, not a monologue.
